Brookings Historic Districts Central Residential Historic District Located just east of the Commercial Historic District, early settlers began building their own historic creations. The majority of the homes in the residential historic district were built between 1891 and 1941. Lumber yards had provided pattern books, but instead residents created their own, individual dream pattern. The trees provided inspiration and a sophisticated appearance to the neighborhood and residents were eager to build their homes around the mature, tall trees. Through the years, some homes and buildings have been nipped and tucked, but most still hang onto their historical integrity. As for the trees, markers can be found indicating its place on the list of the urban arboretum.

Commercial Historic District Take a stroll through Main Avenue and see first-hand the early architecture of our historic downtown Brookings. With each brick laid and concrete poured, the streets in downtown tell a story of Classic revival and Art Deco, along with Beaux-Arts and Romanesque architecture. A total of 59 buildings line Main Avenue, with 83 percent of the district construction taking place between 1894 and 1928. Most of the buildings

A few volunteers helped to construct the cabin, while members of the Genealogical Society provided the furnishings and also lent a hand at hosting visitors. University Residential Historic District Take a walk or view from your car one of the oldest residential historic districts in the community. Several early residents to the area included a mix of faculty, support staff of SDSU, merchants, professionals and students. The 17-block district dates back to the late nineteenth and middle twentieth centuries featuring quintessential urban residential life common in Midwestern towns. Dating back from 1895 to 1948, the 177 houses and 98 secondary buildings really tell a story of the beginning of the residential development of Brookings in conjunction with SDSU.

Brief History The city of Brookings was surveyed and platted in preparation for the railroad’s construction into the territory, in 1879. Named after Wilmot W. Brookings, a spirited pioneer who traveled to the unsettled Dakota Territory in the late 1850s, Brookings soon grew into a booming town. Merchants from the surrounding areas packed up their businesses and moved to Brookings looking for great opportunity. In 1881 Brookings was chosen as the site for South Dakota State College, a land grant university. Both the city and university have grown dramatically and continue to thrive in the 21st century.
