Brookings County Veterans Memorial Located at the intersection of 6th Street and Western Avenue, 605.697.7778 For more than 20 years, the Brookings County Veterans Memorial has dominated the skyline on the western edge of Brookings and is the site of annual services held in honor of Veterans. The memorial, which was built in honor of all Brookings County veterans, was built through the efforts of several individuals and groups including the county’s nine veteran’s organizations and their auxiliaries. It is regarded as one of the most spectacular monuments in the area and is reportedly one of the most photographed structures in the region.
Centennial Pioneer Cabin Located at Pioneer Park on 6th Street and 1st Avenue Dedicated on July 4, 1989, the Centennial Pioneer Cabin was built in efforts to remember the past and appreciate the pioneering founders of Brookings. The local Genealogical Society developed the idea of a lasting tribute for all generations to enjoy. The organization set out on foot exploring the Big Sioux River in order to locate trees native to South Dakota. The landowners were more than happy to harvest a few trees for the lifelong monument. A few volunteers helped
to construct the cabin, while members of the Genealogical Society provided the furnishings and also lent a hand at hosting visitors. Now, almost 25 years later, the cabin stands as an appreciation for the contributions set forth by the state’s pioneer homesteaders. The cabin is open to the public by appointment only.

Brookings City & County Government Center
The City of Brookings was surveyed and platted in preparation for the railroad’s construction into the territory in 1879. Named after Wilmot W. Brookings, a spirited pioneer who traveled to the unsettled Dakota Territory in the late 1850s, Brookings soon grew into a booming town. Merchants from the surrounding areas packed up their businesses and moved to Brookings looking for great opportunity. In 1881, Brookings was chosen as the site for South Dakota State College, a land grant university. Both the city and university have grown dramatically and continue to thrive in the 21st century.
