The local Genealogical Society developed the idea of a lasting tribute for all generations to enjoy. A few volunteers helped to construct the cabin, while members of the Genealogical Society provided the furnishings and also lent a hand at hosting visitors. Now almost 25 years later, the cabin stands as an appreciation for the contributions set forth by the state’s pioneer homesteaders. The cabin is open to the public by appointment only. SDSU Athletics South Dakota State University’s athletic department made the transition to NCAA Division I status in 2008 with tremendous success. The women’s basketball team appeared in the NCAA Summit League five times in a row, while the men’s basketball team recently made two back-to-back appearances. Along with two Summit League Commissioner’s Cups and the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council Showdown Series trophy, SDSU’s success continues to grow in each sport each year. The football team made the playoffs three times overall in each of the last two seasons, along with volleyball, soccer and baseball also securing spots in the NCAA Tournament over the last eight years. The success of SDSU athletics continues to grow, as does the athletic department. The new Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex will feature a 300 meter track with a 100 meter straight-a-way and an 80-yard synthetic field. In addition, renovations to the baseball and softball fields and a brand new football stadium are all in the works and plan to be completed in the fall of 2016.

Brief History The city of Brookings was surveyed and platted in preparation for the railroad’s construction into the territory, in 1879. Named after Wilmot W. Brookings, a spirited pioneer who traveled to the unsettled Dakota Territory in the late 1850s, Brookings soon grew into a booming town. Merchants from the surrounding areas packed up their businesses and moved to Brookings looking for great opportunity. In 1881 Brookings was chosen as the site for South Dakota State College, a land grant university. Both the city and university have grown dramatically and continue to thrive in the 21st century.
