LARSON ICE CENTER

SINGLE TRACK TRAIL

The recently renovated Larson Ice Center is an indoor two-rink facility. Open Skate is a favorite activity among residents and visitors alike during the winter season. A concession stand and restrooms are available during sporting events and the facility may be reserved for special occasions and birthday parties.

Located within Dakota Nature Park is a Single Track Trail created by the Brookings Mountain Biking Association. The trail includes different textures, levels, and maneuvers for bikers to improve their skills. The trail begins at the SouthBrook Softball Complex and is about two miles long.

LARSON PARK DISC GOLF

SOUTHBROOK PUMP PARK

This 18-hole course is designed for recreational use. Anyone from a novice to an experienced player can throw a disc at this course. However, a little ingenuity is required to successfully weave in and out of the numerous trees scattered throughout the park. Local tip, beware of the disc-eating slough behind hole 12.

The SouthBrook Pump Park, located within Dakota Nature Park, features three different tracks, suited for all ages and abilities. A pump park is designed to use body weight as a means to move a bike through the course, rather than actually having to pedal; although a little pedaling goes a long way around corners and over hills.

Brookings operates under a council-manager form of government. The council is made up of seven members, one of whom is elected by voters to serve as mayor. City Manager Paul Briseno oversees all city departments and city clerk Bonnie Foster runs the information resource center of the city. Regular city council meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Chambers room of the Brookings City & County Government building.

Brookings County is governed by a five-member commission elected at large to four-year terms. They handle matters on a variety of topics, ranging from equalization to highway issues to welfare claims. The county commission meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 8:30 a.m. in the Chambers room of the Brookings City & County Government building. Anyone who wishes to appear on the agenda should call the Commission Department at 605.696.8205.

The South Dakota Legislature includes the 70 members of the House of representative and 35 members of the Senate. Brookings County is part of two districts: District 7, which covers the city of Brookings and Medary and Brookings townships; and District 4, which includes the remainder of Brookings County and portions of Codington, Grant and Deuel counties.
