CENTENNIAL PIONEER CABIN Located in Pioneer Park on 6th Street and 1st Avenue 605.693.4875 Dedicated on July 4, 1989, the Centennial Pioneer Cabin was built in efforts to remember the past and appreciate the pioneering founders of Brookings. The local Genealogical Society developed the idea of a lasting tribute for all generations to enjoy. The organization set out on foot exploring the Big Sioux River in order to locate trees native to South Dakota. The landowners were more than happy to harvest a few trees for the lifelong monument. A few volunteers helped to construct the cabin, while members of the Genealogical Society provided the furnishings and also lent a hand at hosting visitors. Now almost 30 years later, the cabin stands as an appreciation for the contributions set forth by the state’s pioneer homesteaders. The cabin is open to the public by appointment only.
