CENTENNIAL PIONEER CABIN
MCCRORY GARDENS n
Dedicated on July 4, 1989, the Centennial Pioneer Cabin was built in efforts to remember the past and appreciate the pioneering founders of Brookings. The local Genealogical Society developed the idea of a lasting tribute for all generations to enjoy. The organization set out on foot exploring the Big Sioux River in order to locate trees native to South Dakota. The landowners were more than happy to harvest a few trees for the lifelong monument. A few volunteers helped to construct the cabin, while members of the Genealogical Society provided the furnishings and also lent a hand at hosting visitors. Now almost 30 years later, the cabin stands as an appreciation for the contributions set forth by the state’s pioneer homesteaders. The cabin is open to the public by appointment only.
Sitting on the prettiest quarter section in South Dakota, McCrory Gardens features 25 acres of formal display gardens; 45 acres of arboretum dedicated as the South Dakota State Arboretum; 14 formal theme gardens and a rock garden with a waterfall. Private and public contributions funded the $4.2 million, 9,350 square foot McCrory Gardens Education & Visitor Center which was dedicated in 2012. The center features a visitor help desk, gift shop, public restrooms, meeting rooms, a banquet room and more. Development of the formal gardens began in the 1960s with work on a two-acre formal area using annual, perennial and ground cover plants. An additional 10 acres were dedicated to woody ornamental research and instruction. McCrory Gardens is named after S.A. McCrory, who headed the horticulture department at SDSU from 1947 until his death in 1964. In honor of S.A. McCrory, the gardens continue to “connect people and plants through education, discovery, research and enjoyment of the natural and built landscape.” As the seasons progress, the gardens burst into wild colors that carry through the summer and into late fall. Open Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm Admission is free for children 5 and under, $2 for ages 6-15, $4 for adults
