CENTENNIAL PIONEER CABIN

MCCRORY GARDENS

Located in Pioneer Park on 6th Street and 1st Avenue 605.693.4875

631 22nd Avenue | mccrorygardens.com 605.688.6707 | lisa.marotz@sdstate.edu

Dedicated on July 4, 1989, the Centennial Pioneer Cabin was built in efforts to remember the past and appreciate the pioneering founders of Brookings. The local Genealogical Society developed the idea of a lasting tribute for all generations to enjoy. The organization set out on foot exploring the Big Sioux River in order to locate trees native to South Dakota. The landowners were more than happy to harvest a few trees for the lifelong monument. A few volunteers helped to construct the cabin, while members of the Genealogical Society provided the furnishings and also lent a hand at hosting visitors. Now 30 years later, the cabin stands as an appreciation for the contributions set forth by the state’s pioneer homesteaders. The cabin is open to the public by appointment only.

Sitting on the prettiest quarter section in South Dakota, McCrory Gardens features 25 acres of formal display gardens; 45 acres of arboretum dedicated as the South Dakota State Arboretum; 14 formal theme gardens and a rock garden with a waterfall. Private and public contributions funded the $4.2 million, 9,350 square foot McCrory Gardens Education & Visitor Center which was dedicated in 2012. The education center features a visitor help desk, gift shop, public restrooms, meeting rooms, a banquet room and more. Development of the formal gardens began in the 1960s with work on a two-acre formal area using annual, perennial and ground cover plants. An additional 10 acres were dedicated to woody ornamental research and instruction. McCrory Gardens is named after S.A. McCrory, who headed the horticulture department at SDSU from 1947 until his death in 1964. In honor of S.A. McCrory, the gardens continue to “connect people and plants through education, discovery, research and enjoyment of the natural and built landscape.” As the seasons progress, the gardens burst into wild colors that carry through the summer and into late fall. Open Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm Admission charges apply, check website for current pricing.

BROOKINGS CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY

The Brookings Arts Council (BAC) encourages community connections through the arts by providing a supportive environment for awareness, appreciation and participation. For more than 40 years, the BAC has pursued its purpose not only to entertain and educate the public, but also to increase opportunities for artists to gain recognition. The Annual Juried Art and Photography exhibitions bring together the work of many regional artists and provides a platform for the community’s youngest artists by partnering with area schools to sponsor exhibits of work by students. The original building was built in 1914 and served as the Carnegie Library until 1976, shortly after the BAC took responsibility for the former cultural center and merged into what it is today, making art happen. In 2017, the BAC went through major renovations, including a new roof and ADA accessible features. The building was thoughtfully constructed to fit into the 21st century with help and planning from the City of Brookings, Historic Preservation Committee and a private doner.

SDSU Athletics

n

Stanley J. Marshall Center, SDSU Box 2820 | gojacks.com 605.688.6388 Justin Sell, Director of Athletics: justin.sell@sdstate.edu South Dakota State University’s athletic department is now in its 11th season as an NCAA Division I program and is a proud member of the Brookings community. The 2017-18 athletics season was another banner campaign for the Jackrabbits, who made NCAA tournament appearances in football (sixth consecutive), men’s basketball (third in a row) and women’s basketball (8th in 10 years). In addition, the women’s soccer and men’s cross country teams won Summit League titles, and the softball and equestrian team qualified for postseason competition. Individually, Seth Gross became the first Jackrabbit to win a D-I national title, claiming the 133-pound title at the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Six other Jackrabbits competed in the national tournament, with Luke Zilverberg (eighth at 157 pounds) and David Kocer (seventh at 174 pounds) also earning All-America honors. Gross was one of eight SDSU student-athletes to be honored as a conference player/athlete of the year last season. Jackrabbit student-athletes also have excelled in the classroom and continually give back to the community. SDSU student-athletes combined for a 3.298 cumulative grade-point average to end the 2017-18 academic year. Student-athletes also devote countless hours

to community service projects. It remains an exciting time to be a Jackrabbit and see how the community, state and region are rallying behind the ever-growing athletic department at South Dakota State University.
