Visit Brookings partnered with SDSU Public Relations Writing class to create featured stories throughout the magazine. The SDSU campus is centrally located in Brookings, and its students live, work and play all around the city. They feel a special bond with the place they call home for nine months or more out of the year. Eighteen of these Jackrabbits contributed articles to the guide you’re reading. They were students in a Public Relations Writing course taught by Marina Hendricks, an assistant professor in the SDSU School of Communication & Journalism. The class partnered with Visit Brookings to write features about places and experiences that they know and appreciate. They spent the month of October 2020 gathering background information, conducting interviews, writing and revising. Their stories reflect the enthusiasm that’s baked into Brookings by SDSU students. QUESTIONS HOW COLD DOES IT GET IN THE WINTER?
South Dakota winters can be unpredictable, but having the right gear makes our lives easier. Pack a parka, mittens, a scarf, and boots for extra comfort because the average temperature in January is 22 degrees.
HOW HOT DOES IT GET IN THE SUMMER? Surprisingly hot and humid! The dress code of summer in South Dakota includes bathing suits, shorts, sundresses and plenty of sandals. The average temperature in July is 81 degrees.
BROOKINGS, SD OR BROOKINGS,OR? We get a lot of calls for our doppelganger Brookings, Oregon. And we’re here to set the record straight… no, we don’t have coastlines or an Azalea Festival. But we do have lots of lakes for fishing, one of the largest outdoor craft festivals in the state (Brookings Summer Arts Festival) and a 25-arce botanical garden with 45-acre arboretum open year-round.
WHERE CAN I PARK MY RV? If you’re making a pit stop in Brookings on your way west, we’ve got a few places to park your RV. Located in Brookings is Sexauer Park & Campground, open May-October. The Swiftel Center also has a few spots reserved for guests of the event center, specifically if you’re here for a cattle show or other agriculture event. Located in northeast South Dakota, where Interstate 29 (one of the original 1926 federal highways) and U.S. 14 (completed here in 1983 as a 755-mile stretch of the 48,440 miles of the Eisenhower Interstate System), Brookings might be billed as the just-right city: Not too big and not too small, offering most the amenities you’d find in a bigger city while keeping the charm of a slower-paced small Midwestern town. Brookings is well recognized as a “town-andgown” community, the home of South Dakota State University, a land-grant, Morrill Act institution and the flagship of the state’s six public institutions of higher education. The town and gown grew up together and share a proud past and look to the promise of a proud future. The city and the county take their name from Wilmot W. Brookings, an “easterner” born in 1830 in Woolwich, Maine, where he spent his boyhood years on a farm. He would graduate from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, study law and be admitted to the Maine bar in June 1857. In February 1858, while traveling on company business, he became a casualty of a brutal South Dakota winter. While traveling on horseback, he and his horse were spilled and soaked in a small river. With temperatures near 30 below zero, he knew that he needed to get back to Sioux Falls if he was to survive.

He made it. But his feet and lower legs were too badly frozen to be saved. While the surgery slowed Brookings down, it didn’t stop him. Fitted with primitive prostheses, he would hobble and squeak his way on “wooden legs” to fame as an astute businessman, attorney, politician and lawmaker. To be noted is that while Brookings made his way into a stretch of territory that became Brookings County and the city of Brookings, he never lived in the area. Home of the Jackrabbits What started out in 1881 in Brookings as Dakota Agricultural College, also known as “the college on the hill,” would go on to be South Dakota Agricultural College; then South Dakota State College of Agriculture; and finally in 1964, South Dakota State University. Today SDSU is a Division I university. While it remains true to its land-grant mission, it is recognized as a leader in multiple disciplines and offers degrees from bachelor’s through master’s to doctorates. In the past 11 years, South Dakota State’s athletic programs have won 46 regular season and postseason league championships in eight different sports while 30 Jackrabbit teams made NCAA tournament appearances. Because of the success, South Dakota State received national attention when it hosted ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Oct. 26, 2019. The show, staged on College Green near the Coughlin Campanile, highlighted the Dakota Marker rivalry game between the Jacks
and the North Dakota State Bison. A study by the Brookings Economic Development Corporation estimated 13,000 people to be in attendance. More than 1.7 million viewers watched the show live on television that morning. The Dakota Marker is the trophy awarded to the winner of the annual football game played between the NDSU Bison and SDSU Jackrabbits, both of which are members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Football on campus “is more than just a game – it’s an event,” Merriam said. “It’s not just coming and watching 60 minutes of football and leaving. There’s so many more other things going on. It’s an all-encompassing event that the whole family can enjoy. It’s a friendly, safe environment and it’s a lot of fun.” The Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band plays during every Jackrabbit home game. Other attractions, such as tailgating before the game, watching on-field contests, shopping for Jackrabbit merchandise at the SDSU Bookstore in the Student Union and getting a picture with “Jack” the mascot, are all included in the football game day experience. Inside Frost Arena, the Jackrabbit women reached the Sweet 16 in the 2019 NCAA women’s basketball tournament for the first time in program history. On the men’s side, no other Division
I college basketball program, including national powerhouses like Duke, Kentucky and Kansas, has a higher winning percentage at home in the last nine seasons than the Jacks. The home court advantage environment is filled with “Let’s go ‘Rabbits” chants, a lively pep band performance, and the roar of the crowd. It’s an adrenaline rush for every person in attendance. These accomplishments are not possible without community support. Whether they cheer on the Jackrabbits in the final minutes of a basketball game or sport the yellow and blue around town, fans and supporters make a significant impact on each team. “We are so grateful for the support of not only the city of Brookings, but the region,” Merriam said, referencing fans from all over South Dakota and surrounding states. “The way that we are able to bring people in and the way that they respond is absolutely huge and it means so much to us.”

SUMMER One of our best-kept secrets is Dakota Nature Park. Located near the south edge of town, it’s a former landfill and gravel pit that was transformed into ponds, wetlands, and prairies. Trails weave in and out of the natural landscapes at the park, with bridges connecting the paved

If you’re interested in looking for a short summer road trip, look no further than Oakwood Lakes State Park. This group of glacial lakes is about 20 miles from Brookings and features picturesque views of the South Dakota wilderness. Open year-round, the park has cabins and campsites with and without electricity to rent. With activities available like boating, swimming, basketball, and disc golf, it is a great place for families wanting a getaway.

In the middle of Brookings sits Hillcrest Park, a large open space with plenty of tall trees. The park has tennis courts, horseshoe pits, picnic shelters and a playground, offering a variety for those searching for a good place to spend a fall afternoon.
If the temperatures are a little too cold for enjoying the outdoors, Brookings offers a lot of ways to recreate indoors. Situated next to Dakota Nature Park is the Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center, which houses both archery and firearms ranges.
Exploring our community parks is certainly a great way to enjoy the changing of seasons in Brookings, but residents also flock to the fields surrounding our community for hunting. The state of South Dakota is known for its pheasant hunting, with the largest ring-necked pheasant population in the world. While hunting is part of our culture, most residents and visitors find suitable land outside of Brookings city limits.
The facility offers equipment and gun rentals, an automatic retrieval system, and youth classes on topics ranging from basic archery to survival in the South Dakota wilderness.
WINTER While South Dakota is known for its long winters, Brookings is known for celebrating the season.
Dustin Huber, the center’s director, said he wants the facility to provide new experiences for people. “It lets people step outside of their comfort zone,” he said. “Not a lot of towns have a gun range or archery range where they can come in and learn something new.” Day passes can be purchased for unlimited time at the ranges, with no scheduled appointment needed, making it the perfect place to brush up on your marksmanship before you hit the field. visitbrookingssd.com

SPRING When the temperatures rise and the snow starts to melt, everything in Brookings seems to come back to life, and there is no better place to witness this than McCrory Gardens. McCrory Gardens is owned and operated by South Dakota State University and features vast amounts of seasonal flowers, trees and grasses to stroll through and appreciate. Benches and open areas encourage you to stop and take it all in. Another way to enjoy the fresh air is to lace up your shoes and go for a run around town. The Prairie Striders Running Club hosts multiple races in Brookings each year, including the Arbor Day

For distance fans, there’s the Brookings Marathon in May, started in 1970, includes a half-marathon and 5K, as well as a marathon relay. While Frisbee has been around since the early 1900s, it gained popularity as disc golf in the 1970s and quickly grew as a sport anyone could play. Whether you’re an avid disc golfer or just happy to enjoy the scenery with friends, you’ll find a course to suit you in the Brookings area. For experienced “frolfers” (as some may call them), Brookings offers two courses. The first, located at Larson Park, is just off 22nd Avenue. The second course is located on the east end of South Dakota State University’s campus. Larson Park Disc Golf is a 20-hole layout, fit for all types of players regardless of skill level and arguably one of the most diverse courses in the area. Recently redeveloped by the Brookings Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department, the Larson Park course has several features that come into play to make it exciting and unique. A pond, multiple changes in ground elevation, tight tree lines, and sidewalks provide something new and challenging for every frolfer to enjoy. In addition to the Disc Golf Course, Larson Park is home to other activities including a basketball court, playground equipment, picnic tables and paved recreational trails. It also hosts various events throughout the year, so be on the lookout for what’s happening around the park. The SDSU Disc Golf course is located just across the street from the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on campus. The course is home to nine holes and is open to the community. A great course for beginners, it also serves all skill levels. While visiting the campus course, be sure to stop by the University Student Union to get your fill of food and drinks. Check out the SDSU Bookstore, where you can stock up on Jackrabbit gear. Head over to the west side of campus to climb the Coughlin Campanile and get some delicious ice cream and cheese from the SDSU Dairy Bar, you don’t want to miss that! Both of these courses operate year-round and are free, as long as players bring their own equipment. “While we don’t currently have equipment rental, discs are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased at a few places here in town,” said Dusty Rodiek, director of the Brookings Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department.
“The UDisc app is also a great resource for anyone who is visiting the area and wants to visit the courses,” Rodiek said. “It includes the layouts, any course updates, and allows players to keep score and write a review and make comments on the course.” The UDisc app can be found on the Apple App Store and Google Play. If you are searching for another disc golfing adventure close to Brookings, consider a 20-minute drive northwest to Oakwood Lakes State Park. The park’s nine-hole course is perfect for beginners looking to learn more about basic techniques. From putting to long-distance throwing, you won’t have to worry about working around many obstacles. It’s also a great course for experienced players to perfect their skills. Oakwood Lakes State Park is open from May to October and requires a day or park pass. In addition to disc golf, it offers hiking, fishing, kayaking, and camping.

The recognition reflects our commitment to improving bicycle conditions, offering educational programs, and promoting our bicycle network. SINGLE TRACK TRAIL & PUMP PARK The Single Track Trail and Pump Park were designed by BMX crews and the Brookings Mountain Biking Association. The trail itself features different textures, elevations, quick turns, switchbacks, and jumps. The whole system allows riders of all ages to give it a shot and sharpen their skills. The trail is single direction and has two entrance points, one from the Pump Park and one from the Southbrook Softball Complex southwest corner parking lot. The Pump Park is a continuous loop of dirt berms and rollers, designed for you to ride without pedaling. It features three different loops, suited for all ages and abilities. It’s a great place for beginners to learn and experts to expand their skills.

“And summer’s lease hath all too short a date,” wrote William Shakespeare. Coming out of a spring that may have had a lingering of winter, Brookings area residents are always more than ready for the 100 or so days from early June to mid-September.
If there’s one annual event that puts Brookings on the map and makes it a destination, arguably it’s the Brookings Summer Arts Festival. Held in historic Pioneer Park, the BSAF is billed as South Dakota’s premier juried arts festival. Over 200 artists from across the nation, representing 15 disciplines of the arts, fill the grassy areas of the Park with original skilled and handcrafted works of art. Over the two days of the festival, as many as 70,000 people are likely to visit the park and enjoy all that is offered.

Add to the artists’ offerings 38 ethnic and gourmet food booths, historic displays, antique booths, entertainment, and a children’s area that provides fun and educational activities. Another big-time event that brings show-time to Brookings is Prairie Repertory Theatre, with a production schedule coming soon. One consistent treasure trove of local talent has been Brookings Community Theatre. The troupe aplans a return to the boards of the Proscenium Theatre of the SDSU Oscar Larson Performing Arts in July 2021, with “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” a musical comedy written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart. One summer tradition that has been around for nearly 40 years and which resident and visitors will welcome back on Sunday evenings in June
and July is the Brookings Area Community Band. About 100 musicians – ranging in age and talent from collegians and high schoolers (with an occasional middle schooler) – take to the stage of the WPA-era bandshell in Pioneer Park. For the next 90 minutes, they’ll entertain community members and visitors with with a medley of marches, movie themes, big band, show tunes and polkas. And every concert features a “Children’s March,” led by longtime band member Kathy Larson.

In addition to flying their own kites, they have the opportunity to watch those monstrous-sized made-toshow kites floating almost motionless at the end of their tethers in the blue skies over Brookings. One popular ongoing event is Downtown at Sundown. Popular with home-towners and visitors alike, it offers good food and good brews by a variety of vendors plus things to do for the kids.
Concertgoers bring their lawn chairs and blankets and settle in for some relaxation and free family fun. Each performance typically focuses on a theme. And look for snacks and treats such as watermelon, popcorn, chocolate cake, root beer and pretzels.
There are parks just right for picnics with families and friends; and some have playgrounds for the kids. And there are plenty of watering holes and eateries, whether one looks for classy dining or casual gathering over burgers and brewskis.
The Brookings Kite Festival, which was held this past summer at the Fishback Soccer Complex will be back the weekend of June 19 and June 20. A free community event, it’s one of those events that can especially be enjoyed by families. Grandpa can get out and enjoy this event with

With the building’s history stemming back over 119 years, Skinner’s Pub was formerly home to many different businesses, including Skinner’s Department Store, a roller rink, 40 years as Montgomery Ward, an Elks Lodge, and a photography studio. Now, visitors and residents are welcomed into an open space with tall ceilings, restored maple floors, huge display windows and perhaps the most elaborate tin ceiling in Brookings – a pretty cool backdrop for more than 25 years of live music.

Many genres have taken the stage at Skinner’s, including blues, country, jazz, folk, reggae and rock. Up-and-comers, seasoned performers, local groups, tribute bands and famous artists have all played at Skinner’s. Downtown BROOKINGS Main Avenue is home to over 220 locally owned restaurants, clothing boutiques, home décor stores, antique shops and more. These businesses are run by passionate members of the community who are enthusiastic about serving visitors and local residents. Main Avenue has been the center of business in Brookings since the city’s incorporation in 1881. At that time, 70 businesses were already located on Main Avenue. Many of the original buildings built between 1894 and 1940 are still in use, in fact, 59 buildings comprise the Brookings Commercial Historic District along and adjacent to Main Avenue. Downtown Brookings is home to a variety of businesses and has something to offer for everyone. From food and drink, to shopping and nightlife, there is so much to see, do and experience.

If you are a fan of craft beers, two craft breweries can be found downtown – Wooden Legs Brewing Co. and Eponymous Brewing Co. Wooden Legs is known for its own line, as well as guest taps from other local brew pubs. Eponymous incorporates local ingredients into its brews. Grab a cracker-crust pizza at Wooden Legs, or check out the local food truck rotation at Eponymous weekly during the summer. Downtown Brookings offers a vibrant nightlife scene. Skinner’s Pub and The Wild Hare host live bands throughout the year. In the summer, you can find bean-bag games and sand volleyball being played on the Wild Hare’s large outdoor patio. Each stocks one-of-akind pieces. Farmhouse Fancy and Whoa Nellie are also known for repurposing and upcycling many of the items available in their stores. The Carrot Seed Kitchen Co. is your source for all things kitchenware. The Carrot Seed offers small appliances, utensils, serving pieces, gadgets, and much more, along with specialty foods from the Brookings area. Honeycomb Gifts is a modern shop that provides an eclectic array of products. You can find a gift for anyone at Honeycomb. Wink’s Fine Jewelry features a high-quality selection of engagement and anniversary rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets, and gemstones. If you need a quick fix on your own piece of jewelry, Wink’s also offers in-store repairs. Three antique shops are located along Main Avenue: Threads of Memories, Antique Gallery Mall, and the Antique Mercantile. THINGS TO DO The Children’s Museum of South Dakota provides indoor and outdoor hands-on entertainment for the entire family. It features an art studio, a dino dig, a puppet theater, a creativity lab, a living maze, a cloud climber, and several more activities. The Children’s Museum is also home to “Mama,” the only full-size, permanent animatronic T. Rex in South Dakota. Café Coteau in the museum’s atrium serves breakfast and lunch. Crazy Days is a two-day event held every summer where local businesses offer great deals on their products. Other activities, including live music, take place throughout the weekend. Urban Canvas murals can be found in alleyways throughout downtown Brookings. These seven (and counting) works of art make the perfect backdrop for family photos or styled photo shoots. Downtown Brookings hosts several events throughout the year, including Downtown at Sundown, a five-week outdoor festival held throughout the summer. Along with live music, the festival features local food and retail vendors, face painting, inflatables, yard games, and more. In December, downtown celebrates the season with the Festival of Lights parade. The Brookings Farmers Market is held every Saturday from the beginning of May through the end of October. Visitors can find fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats, jams, honey, bread, coffee, soap, eggs, teas, and more, all sourced from local producers. Free family yoga is also offered at the market. Keep It Clean is a Downtown Brookings initiative to keep Main Avenue looking its best. Everyone is encouraged to volunteer for the weekly cleanups held every Sunday in spring, summer and fall.

The 50th anniversary celebration on July 10-11, 2021, marks a major milestone for this jubilant festival held in Pioneer Park.

The development of the arts festival is one of humble beginnings, with a group of local artists and patrons coming together and creating this idea over coffee. The community of Brookings proudly created a gathering for its art-loving citizens.
“The artists’ dedication shows in their pride of being able to showcase their work to the patrons of the arts festival,” Avery said.
In 1972, the first festival took place with less than 20 booths. Now there are more than 200 booths. The craftsmanship of the artists and their dedication to technique are extraordinary. “Art is in the eye of the beholder,” said Shari Avery, who serves as publicity chair of the festival’s organizing committee. “The festival is a juried art show and the artists have to come with their orig-

Featured art includes paintings, graphics, jewelry, leather goods, metalworks, pottery, sculpture, wood products, and much more. Handcrafted and original work ranges from soap and maple syrup to violins and stained-glass masterpieces.
The artists enjoy the time spent sharing the stories behind their craft. “They want to engage with the patrons. It builds connections,” Avery said. People who attend this event take delight in being able to see, touch, and buy a piece of culture. Strolling minstrels continually pass through the crowd, creating a lively and cheerful environment. Visitors relish the hands-on lessons and opportunities to learn from the history, antiques, and children’s “make and take” booths. Walk past display after display of art and smell the yummy aroma of festival food. Food booths with

4-H barbecue pork, Asian bowls, crab fritters, beef sandwiches, pizza and Wild Bill’s root beer are just a few of the options. Gourmet and ethnic foods are a major highlight for visitors.
The Brookings community takes pride in welcoming artists from across the country, as well as celebrating vendors with local ties. One area artist is Dave Huebner, a potter from Bushnell, South Dakota, who co-founded the festival and has exhibited every year since 1972. Huebner’s business, Dakota Stoneware, provides ample examples of work related to history as well as modern design. The Brookings Summer Arts Festival helps the community thrive. Each year, hotels are full and booked well in advance. Gas stations, downtown boutiques, and restaurants are all supported by artists and visitors. Local residents plan class and family reunions around the festival dates, bringing even more people into town. The festival committee consists of approximately 30 individuals from all walks of life. Throughout the year, they come together to plan and organize this event. The festival is truly a community get-together. It takes many volunteers and staff from several city departments, including the Brookings Police Reserves. Nonprofits such as the Brookings High School Bobcat Band Boosters and the Boys & Girls Club of Brookings add community presence to the event while fundraising for their organizations. “We invite you to join us in celebrating our 50th year with art, food and entertainment,” Avery said. BREWING WITH A HINT OF HISTORY By John Kubal, The Brookings Register
In one of those oddities of history that fact is much stranger than fiction, the Wooden Legs Brewing Company has historical ties to our city’s namesake: Wilmot Wood Brookings, who had wooden legs. How Brookings got those wooden legs and how he came to have a city and a county named after him and have a brewing company named after his legs is a long and circuitous story that begins back east 190 years ago. Brookings was born in Woolrich, Maine, on Oct. 23, 1830, and spent his boyhood years on a farm. He graduated from Bowdoin College (Brunswick), studied law and was admitted to the Maine Bar in June 1857. That same month, he and nine other men from the Western Town Company of Dubuque, Iowa, left for Sioux Falls, then part of the Minnesota Territory. They arrived in late August; and Brookings was named manager of the company’s interests in that area. He would help organize the government of Minnehaha County and go on to serve as its first district attorney.

In June 1905, he died suddenly while riding a streetcar in Boston, following a return from his hometown of Woolrich. His remains would be returned to South Dakota four years later – but not to the city or county that bears his name – to his final resting place in a town that he knew well.
A report in the June 28, 1909, edition of The Brookings Register tells of a metallic box containing Brookings’ remains being buried in a Yankton cemetery. Additionally, the report noted that his remains had been cremated a year earlier in Boston and brought to Yankton at his request, but where the burial took place was not named.
GROUNDED IN WHAT WE BREW Wilmot Wood Brookings has his name secured in history by virtue of his deeds and the county, two cities and a newspaper that bear his name. Add to that his story being told in a perhaps unusual setting: Wooden Legs Brewing Company, in downtown Brookings on Fifth Street, across the street from The Brookings Register. Owned by the trio of Seth Koch, Brant Mathiason and Steven Kreeger, Wooden Legs opened about eight years ago. Koch wears two additional hats, as general manager and head brewer. Brookings was the only place considered as the location – home – for their new venture. But what to call it? “We decided we’ve got to come up with a name that is only applicable to Brookings,” Koch explained. “It can’t be transferable; it can’t be ambiguous. It can’t be Black Hills Brewing Company or East River Brewing Company or Big Sioux. It has to be something that only makes sense here. We wanted it to be part of what we did. That’s when we started doing the research.” And they “ran into a lot of stories.”
Koch found that Brookings was “not incredibly popular, was a self-made man, maybe even a self-promoter. We thought that was kind of funny that the city of Brookings was named after somebody that had only visited here maybe once or twice. That’s a funny way to name a community.” They decided to honor Brookings “a little bit” with some tradition that defined him: “in service to the community, he had frozen and lost his legs. Let’s call it the Wooden Legs Brewing Company.“ Koch admits “it’s a little tongue in cheek, but you can’t transfer that to anywhere else. That’s just such an inherent part of what the city is. So that’s kind of how we came up with it.” “It makes for a good story to tell a lot of people. It gives our bartenders a chance to engage with our customers,” Koch said laughing a bit, adding, “Why did you call it this? That’s kind of fun.” He noted that one of Wooden Legs most popular beers is Split Rock Creek, “the fateful river, allegedly that Judge Brookings froze his legs in, a nod to the history story that is Brookings.” Other beers have been named after Brookings area landmarks, such as the Campanile, on the South Dakota State University campus. “That’s one of the things that keeps us grounded in what we do,” Koch explained. “All of the names and all of our history are based on this community and who we are. Not all college campuses are as lucky as SDSU when it comes to the unwavering support of the community. “Both the town and university have always given each other the right opportunities at the right time. We can get through anything,” said Lamp, a lifelong resident of Brookings and an SDSU alumnus. South Dakota State University was founded in 1881 and became a land-grant university in 1889. The SDSU Theatre and Dance program presents performances throughout the year that community members are encouraged to attend. Since its opening with a touring production of the popular Broadway musical “Chicago,” the Performing Arts Center also has become a stop for nationally known acts. Other cultural events on campus are open to the Brookings community. The University Program Council routinely brings in speakers and holds forums the public can attend. Greek life organizations sponsor events to support their philanthropies, like Ceres Relay for Life and Chi Omega’s Wish Week.
Taylor Deplazes is a senior agricultural communication major with a minor in music and a certificate in intercultural and workplace competence from Farmington, Minnesota. During college, she has completed three internships and participated in campus organizations such as University Program Council, Alpha Xi Delta women’s fraternity and the Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band.

The combination of a 1920s diner, the perfect hamburger slider and a town filled with charm is where you’ll find Nick’s Hamburger Shop. This quaint burger joint sits on the corner of Main Avenue and Fifth Street in downtown Brookings. Todd Fergen has run the family business since 2008, when he took over ownership from his father. He prides himself on “simplicity and transparency” as the reason for long-term success. Four generations in, the restaurant continues to capture the hearts of many. This staple has been a South Dakota State game day tradition tracing back to the 1947 homecoming, also known as Hobo Day. On Oct. 18, 1947, the Jackrabbits faced rival the University of South Dakota, while Nick’s Hamburger Shop sold a record 4,450 hamburgers. Unfortunately, the Jacks ended up falling to the Coyotes by a score of 36-7. The

record has not been broken and the rest is history. With the opportunity to expand to Sioux Falls and surrounding areas, Fergen shared that Nick’s is a “Brookings restaurant.” The relationship to the city of Brookings is described as being one and the same. Nick’s “is a big part of the community,” Fergen said. “We rely on them and they rely on us. We consider it a privilege to serve the people that keep us in business.” One of the many community connections Nick’s shares with Brookings is the membership in the Great 8 Passport program. Through several local attractions, visitors and locals can earn “stamps” in their passport as a one-of-a-kind momento. A popular stop along the dotted trail is Nick’s Hamburger Shop. Brookings holds a special place in Fergen’s life and so many others. The family-like atmosphere pairs wonderfully with any business looking to make Brookings home. Fergen discussed the unique relationship with his customers. “We keep in close contact with everyone and that is the main thing that has kept us going,” he said. In addition to the variety of restaurants, local eateries, and national chains, hungry residents and visitors enjoy the changing flavors of food trucks in Brookings. “The food trucks provide a convenient way to alternate menu choices which are not always located at the brick and mortar businesses,” says Bonnie Foster, Brookings City Clerk. There’s no shortage of variety when the choices are Rub N Tug BBQ, Midwest Fresh Catering, On the Hook Fish and Chips, and La Corita. Bring your appetite and pick a different food truck each week. The food trucks in Brookings offer ice cream, authentic Mexican, burgers, hoagies, BBQ, and much more for the 2021 season. The food trucks can be found at many local events and around the state, especially during the summer months. Davis believes “quality of food and quality of service” make Craft unique. When he’s serving you, he’s serving family. While his relationship with customers is a top priority, he also focuses on providing a tight-knit team atmosphere for his employees. He notes that quality teamwork translates to dedication served with a side of passion.
Davis grew up in a family of women who love to cook. He learned to cook from three great-grandmas, two grandmas and his mother, who has been a head chef for the past 25 years. His sister went to school to become a pastry chef. However, cooking was not originally on his radar. He studied math and engineering at SDSU. After graduating and getting the opportunity to work at Craft, he rediscovered his love of cooking and decided to purchase the restaurant. Continuing the family tradition, Davis has built the restaurant into what it is today. Offering new

Flavor Indian and Asian Fare, or simply Flavor as it’s commonly known, has been in Brookings for years, but made the move to Main Avenue in 2014 when Dan Huntington bought the restaurant and remodeled the space. The restaurant’s interior mixes bohemian, minimalist, and Indian-inspired styles and keeps visitors (and locals) coming back for its exotic and unique food combinations.

As someone who went to culinary school at the renowned Le Cordon Bleu in Minneapolis, Huntington is more than qualified to be running a restaurant that every day involves a hard work ethic and the mentality to strive for perfection. “We are not fast food,” he said. “All our food is made from scratch 95 percent of the time and nothing is made until someone orders it.” Flavor’s menu includes a wide variety of options to suit dietary and health preferences. Customers who want vegetarian or gluten-free dishes can rest assured that they will find items on the menu that meet their needs.

As the menu changes yearly, Huntington is always looking for ways to include more diverse selections by experimenting and trying out new recipes. Spicing things up is something he takes pride in and something he also believes Brookings needs. “As anybody would know who lives here, South Dakota runs on meat and potatoes. And the world is more than that,” he said. Huntington’s goal for the restaurant is to continue to bring new flavors, tastes, and textures to the Brookings community that weren’t always there. Flavor introduces people to different cultures and maybe a few new favorite dishes as well. Flavor not only provides customers with a new foodie experience, but also serves up comfort through tough times. A single bite of warm curry can transport a customer back home, and Huntington is proud and happy to make that connection. Some of Huntington’s best memories at Flavor

For dessert, don’t kid yourself, you’ll be addicted to the Cinnamon Sugar Naan Bites (think hot fluffy doughnut) within seconds. Located in the Brookings Commercial Historic District, Cook’s has a long history with the community. Most are surprised to know the original location was 301 Main Ave., opened by Bruce Cook, founder of Cook’s Kitchen. PHEASANT RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE: A CORNERSTONE OF THE COMMUNITY By Stephanie Henke Founded in 1949, the Pheasant Restaurant and Lounge started out as a small café on the outside of the Brookings city limits. In 1966, it was turned into a steakhouse. Today, the restaurant is under the same family ownership as it was in 1966 and keeps an upscale-casual atmosphere, but adds a comforting, nourishing sense of home throughout the menu.

Customers can find the right fit with a menu that ranges from burgers to spätzle - a German dumpling noodle - to a bison filet. The restaurant also offers high-end steaks and seafood. The brunch menu is filled with stuffed Nordic waffles and smoked breakfast tots - crispy hash brown nuggets served under a glass cloche filled with hickory and applewood smoke. Burgers like the “Big R” are budget friendly, but still serve you the range of flavors the Pheasant is famous for. The Sturdy Post Ranch Lamb Burger is made with lamb from Ward, South Dakota, for a taste of American homegrown flavors. Dietary needs are also a priority at the Pheasant. A meatless option can be substituted at no extra charge. Burgers range from $12-$16. The steak side of the menu includes the South Dakota Bison Filet with Wojapi Sauce. This dish calls back to the Native American influences within the state. The restaurant also offers Angus T-bone and sirloin cuts, each with intriguing flavor profiles. Steaks range from $20-$34. The menu is diverse in flavors as well as prices. “You can get a meal here that is easy on a college

The community has been a staple to the restaurant, so to give back, Johnson and his staff created a menu that opens the door to foods that may not otherwise be experienced in larger cities. They also give back through events and programs, a parking lot pig roast (an old and rare tradition), classes in olive oil, wine, food and ice cream, live music and a customer appreciation party around the holidays. During the summer of 2020, the Pheasant brought back carhop service, featuring old school cafe Americana classics with a twist. Many families enjoyed the revival of an old tradition. Customers often stayed and had their meals in the car. For good food, atmosphere and community, the Pheasant Restaurant and Lounge is the place for you. Knowing she can make a small difference for someone along the way is one of her favorite parts of being a business owner. Dorn’s ability to create a warm and welcoming environment for everyone is what makes The Bevy so memorable. The Bevy features high-quality necklaces, bracelets, earrings, cuffs and cufflinks. One of the best aspects of the shop is how the jewelry is created. Although there are many different ways to make jewelry, one of Dorn’s preferred techniques is hand stamping. When it comes to her aesthetic and style, Dorn describes it as “rustically refined,” with her inspiration coming from Native American art and jewelry. South Dakota is a special place for Dorn, so you can almost guarantee there will be a piece of it in every creation. As for the future of The Bevy by Mama Peacock, Dorn is optimistic. She hopes to expand her business to surrounding states and have the opportunity to create jobs. Her goal is to help people who might not typically be seen in traditional employment experiences. “I really believe everyone is creative,” she said. Creativity also came into play when choosing a name for The Bevy. A bevy can be defined as a large group of people or things of a certain kind. It can also be defined as a group of birds, especially quail, particularly when gathered on the ground. When Dorn looked at the definition of bevy, she knew it was a perfect fit. Bevy embodied her vision for her business and also had a fun play on words. BLUESTEM BICYCLES Walking down Main Avenue in Brookings is a walk through history mixed with updated storefronts and new businesses.
