HOW COLD DOES IT GET IN THE WINTER? South Dakota winters can be unpredictable, but having the right gear makes our lives easier. Pack a parka, mittens, a scarf, and boots for extra comfort because the average temperature in January is 22 degrees.

HOW HOT DOES IT GET IN THE SUMMER? Surprisingly hot and humid! The dress code of summer in South Dakota includes bathing suits, shorts, sundresses and plenty of sandals. The average temperature in July is 81 degrees.

But we do have lots of lakes for fishing, one of the largest outdoor art festivals in the state (Brookings Summer Arts Festival) and a 25-arce botanical garden with 45-acre arboretum open year-round.

WHERE CAN I PARK MY RV? If you’re making a pit stop in Brookings on your way west, we’ve got a few places to park your RV. Located in Brookings is Sexauer Park & Campground, open May-October. The Swiftel Center also has a few spots reserved for guests of the event center, specifically if you’re here for a cattle show or other agriculture event. Agricultural Heritage Museum Immerse yourself in South Dakota’s number one industry, Agriculture. The Agricultural Heritage Museum will inspire passion for the diverse history, culture, and science of agriculture in our state. South Dakota Art Museum This stop is for those who are looking to appreciate the finer things. The South Dakota Art Museum curates, preserves, exhibits, and interprets visual art for the viewing pleasure of all its patrons. Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center With two top quality indoor ranges (firearm and archery), Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center is the perfect destination to safely practice shooting. The BCOAC is also home to the SDSU Extension, 4-H offices, and the Game Fish & Parks office. The Game Fish & Parks office hosts several programs throughout the year including a Hunting Safe Program. The SDSU Dairy bar has over 60 different flavors all curated by South Dakota State University students in the Davis Dairy Plant. BROOKINGS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL South Dakota’s premiere juried arts festival garners over 200 artists from across the nation to fill the grassy areas of Pioneer Park. Representing 15 different disciplines of art, 38 different ethnic and gourmet food booths, historic displays, and entertainment it can seem hard to tackle; here are some pro tips to pack in as much art into two days as possible.

When winter rolls around, there’s snow better place to spend it than right here in Brrr-ookings! Take in Frost Fest during the third weekend in February. Families can enjoy outdoor activities throughout the community like snow fort building at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, cross country skiing at Dakota Nature Park and plenty of frosty surprises at McCrory Gardens. Check the visitbrookingssd.com website for a full list of Frost Fest activities. Throughout the winter, residents and visitors can bundle up and make the most of the brisk weather by renting snowshoes or a fishing pole at Dakota Nature Park, or hitting the ice at Larson Ice Center or the Lions Park outdoor skating pond. Holiday fun and excitement are also a highlight for the town during December. Catch Santa as he leads the Festival of Lights parade through Downtown Brookings on the first Friday of the month. As the holiday spirit continues, make your way around town to check out the houses entered in the Let it Glow light competition. To top off the season, McCrory Gardens puts on the month-long Garden Glow event which illuminates the south portion of the gardens with over 200,000 holiday lights. Attracting visitors of all ages, this is a wintertime must-see. “My favorite part is the people,” said Lisa Marotz, director of operations at McCrory Gardens. “It’s coming out in the cold of a December night and hearing people’s voices ... it’s the generations coming together.” While wandering through the majestic garden, sipping hot chocolate and humming your favorite Christmas tunes, you can’t help but feel that nostalgia of the holiday season set in. From Frost Fest to Festival of Lights to Garden Glow, and everything in between, you don’t want to miss out on all of the fun that Brookings has in store for you this winter season!

Brookings Farmers Market Offers More Than Just Vegetables BY KADI TERCA

Providing a taste of small-town living, Brookings Farmers Market offers a blissful Saturday morning. You won’t want to miss out on locally grown fruits and vegetables, beautifully curated flowers, freshly baked bread, perfectly roasted coffee, and more. Brookings Farmers Market was designed to support the area’s farmers and businesses. A group of hard-working farmers and community members started it in 1997. The opportunity to buy and sell locally makes the market an important aspect of life in Brookings. At least 100 people visit every weekend. New residents particularly enjoy the market because it is an excellent way to get involved. “Brookings Farmers Market has a wide variety of things and a nice social atmosphere,” said Carol Birgen, who moved here in May 2021. Baking danishes, cinnamon rolls, flatbreads, baguettes and buns to perfection, Cottleston Bread is one of the market’s top vendors. “We typically sell out at the market,” co-owner Kalley Besler said. “We bake everything fresh, so we really push ourselves to maximum capacity to bring as much as we can.” Cottleston’s bestseller is baguettes, which are the hardest to produce in large quantities. Every week, people show up early so they are guaranteed to bring home fresh-baked goodness. The market is seeing an increase in vendors who are eager to show and sell homemade goods. With more than 50 vendors, Brookings Farmers Market is growing in other ways, too. Manager Nick Ruskin looks to expand by including more family and kid-related activities such as yoga. He wants the market to be a space where everyone feels included and has something to do. “My goal is to try to make the market more of a destination so everybody can stick around,” he said.

Hands on Heritage and History

Travel back in time to see what farming once was like in South Dakota. The Brookings County Museum and South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum show how agriculture worked before modern innovations. Brookings County Museum in Volga, just west of Brookings, offers visitors six buildings full of artifacts to learn about South Dakota’s early days. Step into the schoolhouse and homes from the 1800s and 1900s. Check out all things horse-drawn, including farm equipment, carriages, bobsleds and more, along with everyday appliances and tools used by families in their homes and on the farm. To learn about farming 100 years ago, explore the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum. The museum is filled with equipment, appliances, tools and other artifacts from South Dakota homes and farms. Through hands-on activities, children can experience what it was like to keep a farm running. “Our mission here at the museum is to inspire a passion about history, culture and science around agriculture in South Dakota,” said Sarah Jacobs, education coordinator. Hands-on activities, informational lectures and community-partnered events are ways the museum practices its mission. The museum connects with South Dakota State University and

the community by offering agriculture craft classes every second Monday of the month, professor lectures on a variety of topics, and an indoor farmers’ market in winter. Both museums are exceptional ways to experience South Dakota’s agricultural past through artifacts, events and hands-on activities. These museums offer exciting ways to discover the history that surrounds the area. Brookings County Museum and South Dakota Agriculture Museum make the past feel like reality.

4WithinTHINGS TO DO 45 Minutes of Brookings BY SYDNEE WINTER

Brookings offers plenty of things to see and do in the city and within a short drive. When you’re ready to explore a little more, take a morning or an afternoon to revisit the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her “Little House on the Prairie,” eat a fresh wood-fired pizza on a South Dakota farm, taste local wines or visit an antique town with up to 40 buildings from the 1900s. When you’re done, Brookings awaits your return with a place to rest your head after a fun-filled day. Just 11 minutes from downtown Brookings, Good Roots Farm and Garden, a lovingly restored farm gives you an authentic South Dakota experience. Co-owners Bill and Julie Ross fixed up a 95-year-old barn for people of all ages to come and learn. They have 40 acres for visitors to walk around and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The barn is used for special events, weddings and a weekly family pizza night from June to October. Almost everything on these pizzas is made from scratch or picked from the garden. Forty minutes from Brookings sits a little town called De Smet. The Ingalls Homestead gives you a glimpse of what life was like in the late 1800s. Inspired by the books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the Ingalls Homestead provides numerous prairie traditions such as covered wagon rides, hay twisting, wheat grinding, driving a pony cart, washing clothes, making jump ropes and corn cob dolls, and visiting a one-room schoolhouse. The Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant, held weekends in July, draws visitors from around the world. The story unfolds on the beautiful South Dakota prairie and takes all ages on a journey into the days Laura and her family spent in this little town. “Visitors often comment on how pleasantly surprised they are by how well each business and organization complements each other,” said Ann Lesch, operations manager of In-

galls Homestead. “The experiences are all different and enjoyable on their own, but become richer and more meaningful the more sites one visits and time one spends in De Smet.” Schadé Vineyard and Winery is located in Volga about 10 minutes outside of Brookings and produces diverse types of wine. Named for the original owners, Jim and Nancy Schadé took their passion for making delectable wines and turned it into one of the most distinguished wineries in South Dakota. This venue offers wine for purchase, scenic vineyards, tastings and other events. It has been used the last 20 years as a place for weddings, anniversaries, work occasions and family gatherings. Historic Prairie Village is a replica of a turn-of-the-century main street located 40 miles south of Brookings just outside Madison. Here, you can experience what it was like to walk down main street in the 1900s. Prairie Village offers 35 to 40 antique buildings filled with original artifacts. Originally, Prairie Village started out as an annual threshing show to depict how grain was harvested before combines. This event still attracts around 20,000 people. SINGLE TRACK TRAIL & PUMP PARK The Single Track Trail and Pump Park were designed by BMX crews and the Brookings Mountain Biking Association. The trail itself features different textures, elevations, quick turns, switchbacks, and jumps. The whole system allows riders of all ages to give it a shot and sharpen their skills. The trail is single direction and has two entrance points, one from the Pump Park and one from the Southbrook Softball Complex southwest corner parking lot. The Pump Park is a continuous loop of dirt berms and rollers, designed for you to ride without pedaling. It features three different loops, suited for all ages and abilities. It’s a great place for beginners to learn and experts to expand their skills.

A fun evening in Brookings might start with dinner at a local restaurant followed by a captivating performance by a local theatre group. Theatre in Brookings represents our thriving, community-focused culture. Brookings Community Theatre and Prairie Repertory Theatre regularly entertain audiences by showcasing talented individuals in the city and on the South Dakota State University campus. Brookings Community Theatre has produced shows since 2001 with the goal of offering educational and performance opportunities for people of all ages. Audiences can expect to see three enjoyable and entertaining productions in 2022. The company’s seasons typically include a mix of comedies, dramas and musicals. Prairie Repertory Theatre is a long-standing tradition for many families in and around Brookings. The South Dakota State University organization involves 35 to 45 students each season. During the summer, students are provided with housing, class credit and a scholarship for their participation. As part of its mission, Prairie Repertory Theatre provides intensive training for students while supplying engaging entertainment for all in attendance. From acting and costume design to set construction and marketing, students gain experience in all aspects of theatre production as they stage four shows each season in a multitude of different genres. “It is important to have that balance of both student training and quality entertainment,” said J.D. Ackman, professor and managing/ artistic director. “If one is lacking, either the students or the people who come to the shows will be missing out.” Students participating in Prairie Repertory Theatre bring a wide

range of skills and experience to performances. Diversity in major areas of study and experience allows for creativity to shine through in each act. The company’s recent move to the newly renovated Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center on the SDSU campus was a welcome change, Ackman said. The facility is engineered for quality acoustics and the ability to eliminate background noises such as rain and hail. With a capacity of 850, Oscar Larson Theatre features multiple seating levels to give the audience the best possible views. Since 1970, Prairie Repertory Theatre has staged 12,821 performances of 210 productions and reached over 544,064 patrons. Top theatrical talent can be expected in each performance. The Brookings community looks forward to each story portrayed by local artists.

South Dakota State University has paved the way for performing arts. The Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center has become the best facility within miles. Woodbine Productions, an addition to the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center, has enriched Brookings with the magic of live performances. Woodbine Productions was started by the SDSU Foundation and an anonymous benefactor who underwrites all performance expenses. Woodbine provides substantial scholarships to students involved in performing arts at South Dakota State University. Every dollar made from tickets sold, goes to scholarships. Woodbine is named after the former home of SDSU presidents, Woodbine Cottage, maintaining the connection and history to campus. Woodbine Productions brings a variety of remarkable performers to Brookings. In the past they have had GRAMMY Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, and GRAMMY Award winning acapella group Pentatonix. Concerts are open to the community and students, with tickets selling at lower rates compared to those at large venues. “Performers are hand-selected and curated for specific arts,” said Rina Reynolds of the SDSU Foundation, who programs the Woodbine series. “The goal is to bring the finest, both world-renowned and beginning performers, and to enrich the student experience and community with music.” Woodbine enriches more than just the campus; it also im-

pacts the community. In close conjunction with Brookings High School and state arts programs, Woodbine and SDSU work together to hold concerts, programs and tours. These experiences give aspiring artists an experience of a lifetime. “Nothing compares to experiencing live music or live theatre. That cannot be replicated,” said David Reynolds, director of the School of Performing Arts. “Do you think that they had a good time?” The anonymous benefactor asks that question at the end of every show. A Hop, Skip and Jump Away from Being a Jackrabbit BY KAILEY KOEP

Scheduling a campus tour with South Dakota State University is the best decision you will ever make. South Dakota State University has something for everyone, from rocking the yellow and blue at sporting events to watching a musical or play. The university says by getting involved in one of its 250 clubs and organizations, you’re guaranteed to find something that interests you. It’s about the environment you’re in and the people you meet that makes college great. “Campus is big enough where you may not run into anyone you know, but still have that small-town feel,” says campus visit coordinator Paisley Raml. Campus visits begin at the Student Enrollment Center at the University Student Union. As soon as you and your family walk through the doors, the SDSU Admissions team strives to make you feel comfortable. “I felt very welcome and cared for,” prospective student Zach Rasmussen said. “The campus is very open and I felt I got to see a lot of what they had to offer.” Who knows more about campus than current students? Admissions ambassadors are sophomore through seniors. Visitors get that student-to-student experience and are encouraged to ask questions throughout the tour. “Personable, positive and helpful,” Raml said when asked what three words best describe an SDSU tour. “We greet our visitors by name, check them in and go over schedules and make that personal connection. We strive to keep tours in small groups, so students and families feel like they are making a personal connection with their admissions ambassador.” Prospective students can expect nothing less than the full treatment on an SDSU tour. When you visit SDSU, you stop by the most well-known places on campus. You see rooms in residence halls, including traditional and non-traditional spaces. From the Student Union and Wellness Center to Briggs Library and Bailey Rotunda (home of SDSU’s largest classroom), it’s the closest you can get to student life before becoming a Jackrabbit. Throughout your tour, you get the chance to hear current stu-

dents’ perspectives on campus life. “I make prospective students comfortable by talking about what SDSU and the Brookings community have to offer to them and the sense of community that makes it feel like home here,” said Rachel Zook, a junior admissions ambassador. “I also try to make things personal and try to get to know them on a different level.” The effort is recognized and appreciated by visiting students and their families. “The admissions office is warm and inviting and they tailored to our needs as a big group while in the admissions presentation,” one parent said. South Dakota State University receives tremendous support from not only sponsors and alumni, but also the city of Brookings. Residents are so invested that during Hobo Week (SDSU’s homecoming), they sign up to host groups of students for meals. “The SDSU admissions team embraces the students, and the Brookings community encourages and is involved in so much,” Raml said. SDSU is more than just a school. It’s a community of people who advocate for one another every day.

What Does it Mean to be a Land Grant University? BY KENNEDY TESCH

Nothing says “Welcome to Brookings!” quite like the towering view of the Coughlin Campanile in the distance upon entering town. The true heart and soul of the community, South Dakota State University calls the city of Brookings home. Originally founded as Dakota Agriculture College in 1881, South Dakota State University serves an important role as the state’s largest, most comprehensive university. When South Dakota officially became a state in 1889, Congress allocated 160,000 acres of land to the agriculture school. This allocation was made possible by the Morrill Act, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 to give states the ability to educate students in agriculture as well as liberal arts subjects and practical skills. This idea revolutionized higher education by focusing on the three pillars of the land grant mission: teaching, research and extension outreach throughout the state. The act also made college more available and affordable. “I think one of the biggest things we focus on as part of the land grant mission is access,” said Shawn Helmbolt, SDSU admissions director. “That was really the reason they were created, to provide access to higher education to as many people as possible.” With several research facilities located in Brookings and

across the state as well as ongoing partnerships with state government, South Dakota State University proves diligent in carrying out the land grant mission to better the quality of life in South Dakota. “We have accredited academic programs and a high retention rate with our students,” said Jamison Lamp, university events coordinator. “We’re doing the research right here then disseminating that new knowledge, and then we have a really robust extension program with all of our extension agents across the state and their connection to those communities and in the work that they do.”

Down the Rabbit Hole: Unmasking Jack the Jackrabbit BY KENNEDY PIRLET

You know him, you love him, he’s the face of South Dakota State University. Jack the Jackrabbit serves as a well-known figure in the community. But many are surprised to learn Jack wasn’t the first school mascot. As an agriculture based institution, the Barnyard Cadets first represented South Dakota State College (as it was known then). Around 1905 the Cadets were replaced by the Jackrabbits. Many believe it was following a 81-0 football loss to the Minnesota Gophers. A reporter for the Tribute, who was familiar with the area’s abundance of furry friends, referred to the team as being quick as jackrabbits. And so the new mascot was born. Jack’s look has evolved throughout the years. Early on, he resembled the famous Bugs Bunny (™) with his big teeth and ears standing up. Today, the mascot appears as friendly as ever with his floppy ears and happy smile, while the jackrabbit logo is known for looking fierce in recent years. As Jack’s looks changed, so did his personality. Jack has always made students feel free enough to hop to the beat of their own drum. “He actually is a character,” said Kathy Larsen, who maintains Jack’s wardrobe as keeper of the jackrabbit. “How he acts when he is in that costume is how he portrays the university. All of our Jackrabbits are friendly and willing to greet people.” Over the years, Jack has proved to be much more than a mascot. He represents school spirit for the entire community. Loved by students and community members alike, Jack brings Brookings together. Former Brookings Mayor Keith Corbett explained some Brookings residents call themselves Jackrabbits even though they didn’t attend SDSU. “Everyone can associate themselves with Jack,” he said. Freshman Aubrey Wookey said the sense of unity Jack

brings to campus is one of the reasons she chose SDSU. After touring campus as a high school student, she recalled, “I quickly saw how much Jack means to the community, and it made me want to be a part of it.” In the public eye, Jack is played by presumably one peppy student. In reality, it takes much more to bring him to life. You know you can count on Jack to be hyping up the crowd at sporting events, but his commitments don’t end there. “We hold tryouts and select two to three students to share the responsibility,” said Maggan Froseth, SDSU’s assistant athletic director. Senior Katelyn Sorenson said she had no idea tryouts were held to choose the mascot. “I’ve always wondered who’s in the costume, but the secret just makes Jack seem more real.” The students who have brought Jack to life over the years have ensured it is the university’s best-kept secret since 1905. The true identity of Jack may never be known to the public, but one thing is for sure, he will always hold a special place in the hearts of all who know him.

HOBO DAY: The Best Day of the Year BY HAYLEE HENRY

Jackrabbits from far and wide travel to celebrate Hobo Day, South Dakota State University’s homecoming. Dating back to November 2, 1912, this event brings thousands of people to Brookings annually to participate in cherished traditions. It also is a chance to interact with the community and alumni while experiencing the essence of Jackrabbit pride. Marie Robbins, 2021 Grand Pooba, called Hobo Day “the most exciting tradition of the year.” The Grand Pooba is the leader of the student organizing committee for Hobo Day. Weary Will and Dirty Lil are the honored mascots of SDSU’s homecoming celebration. They represent the history of Hobo Day and the traditions performed each year. One special custom involves choosing alumni to represent Weary Will and Dirty Lil. These individuals are selected based on their SDSU spirit and support, then announced during halftime of the homecoming football game. Each year, the event’s theme is put on buttons for students and the community to wear and show their Hobo Day pride. Past themes include “Rooted at the Rails” in 2020 and “Adventure Awaits” in 2021. This tradition has been in place since the 1950s. During the week, students and the community come together for events such as Bum-a-Meal, with local residents signing up to host free suppers at their homes for hungry Hobos. A fun-filled event leading up to Hobo Day is Rally at the Rails on Main Avenue in downtown Brookings. You can play games, eat a variety of food from local restaurants, and enjoy performances by the Pride of the Dakotas Marching Band, the Bum Band and SDSU Spirit Squads. The most prestigious Hobo Day event is the parade through town on Saturday morning, which brings people from all over the Midwest. The parade is filled with floats representing memories made at SDSU. The symbol of Hobo Day, the 1912 Ford Model T Bummobile, leaves its home in the Hobo Day Gallery at the Student Union for the occasion. Donated by Frank Weigel, a farmer in nearby Flandreau, the Bummobile has led the Hobo Day Parade since 1939. Hobo Day is a time to appreciate the memories and opportunities here at South Dakota State University and prepare for the road ahead. “It’s impressive to see two to three generations of families come together for this unique and different event,” Robbins said.

South Dakota State University is known for its iconic blue and yellow. You can find people of all ages sporting the SDSU colors, logo and Jackrabbit mascot. One place to find spirit wear is Jackrabbit Central. These three locations operated by SDSU are located in the University Bookstore, downtown Brookings and Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Homecoming at South Dakota State is celebrated with Hobo Day, and the classic striped bib overalls are the ultimate addition to any hobo’s closet. As the weather starts to turn, Jackrabbit Central features warmer apparel and necessities. The shops also carry a variety of professional attire for Jackrabbit fans to wear at work. This collection includes everything from polos and button-downs to badge holders. My favorite thing to do is check out the crew neck sweatshirts,” senior Makenna Ludwig said. “They always have new fun options.” SDSU introduced the “Pheasant State” collection in fall 2020,

with a logo combining the university’s insignia and a pheasant with a South Dakota landscape. Pheasant season brings hunters here from all over the world. You also can find Jackrabbit gear at The Socialight Boutique in downtown Brookings. The shop features Gameday Social apparel, a Brookings born and raised brand. The Socialight has it all, including men’s, women’s and children’s wear and sweatshirts, T-shirts, jackets and accessories. SDSU STUDENT CONTRIBUTORS Samantha Anderson is a junior agricultural communica-

tion and agricultural business double major at SDSU from Belview, Minnesota. She enjoys photography, spending time at the lake with her friends and family, and going on ranger rides through the Minnesota river bottom.

Kadi Terca is a junior communication major with public relations and digital media marketing minors from Presho, South Dakota. She enjoys photography, videography, scrapbooking and cooking. During college, she has created her own YouTube channel and website. Lexie Ignaszewski is a senior at SDSU doubling majoring in agricultural communication and agricultural leadership. Originally from New Richland, Minnesota, she enjoys hanging out with friends, shopping, helping out on her family’s farm, showing her rabbits and being a College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences ambassador.

Sydnee Winter is a senior at South Dakota State University majoring in public relations and minoring in mental health services. In her free time, she enjoys thrift shopping, being with her friends and family, and watching Netflix. After graduation, she hopes to find a job working as a public relations manager. Karina Walvatne is a senior at South Dakota State University studying agricultural communication with minors in social media and advertising. Originally from Battle Lake, Minnesota, she is involved in Sigma Alpha professional agricultural sorority, Alpha Zeta honors agricultural fraternity and the Little International staff. She works at the SDSU Foundation and enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling, photography and drinking iced coffee. Marie Robbins is a senior agricultural business and agricultural communication major from Elkton, South Dakota. At SDSU, she is involved with the Hobo Day Committee, Little International and Alpha Zeta Agriculture Honors Fraternity. Katie Hawkins is a senior agricultural communication major at SDSU from Pine Island, Minnesota. She enjoys staying active with campus clubs, graphic design, drinking coffee, spending time with friends and family, and the outdoors. She also has a passion for advocating for all things agriculture and communicating with consumers and producers.

Kooper Janssen is a senior agricultural communication major from Sherburn, Minnesota. He enjoys working on the farm and being outdoors. After graduation, he hopes to become an advocate for the agriculture industry by working as a sales representative at a cooperative.

Hemishka Lobin is an international student from Mauri-

tius. She is a journalism major with minors in public relation, French and digital and social media. In her free time, she likes to play with cats, watch Netflix and dwell on Reddit. A fun fact about Lobin is that she can speak five languages fluently.

Kailey Koep is a junior studying public relations at

South Dakota State University. When not doing homework, Kailey volunteers her time as part of the ministry team at Oasis while also working as an admissions ambassador for SDSU. After graduation in May 2023, the Lakefield native hopes to move back to Minnesota to secure a full-time position in the agricultural field.

Kennedy Tesch is a junior agricultural communication major from Estelline, South Dakota. When not in class, she enjoys being outside and spending time with her friends and family. In the future, she hopes to pursue a communications or marketing career in the agricultural industry. Kennedy Pirlet s a senior communication studies major from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
