brussels’ sales guide 2018
Švisit.brussels - Gaston Batistini
Introduction Content Tab
The visit.brussels online sales guide is accessible to all but is first and foremost directed to professionals of the travel industry, namely tour operators, travel agents, coach companies, and group organisers. It provides a complete overview of all activities and attractions in our city. These are then divided into specific themes which best represent Brussels, e.g. Art Nouveau, comics, heritage, etc. Each activity or attraction is explained in a file containing valuable information such as rates, contact details, languages in which the activity or attraction is provided, and much more. These files will allow travel professionals to take immediate action, should they wish to suggest an activity or attraction to their clients. The entire purpose of the sales guide is to advertise the tremendous potential of Brussels and boost creativity with travel professionals in order for them to perk up, enhance or change their offer whilst making them and their clients eager to discover and get a better idea of the city. Equally important, the sales guide limits research and hence lightens the workload considerably. In addition, the visit.brussels online sales guide obviously contains information on upcoming events, accommodation providers, coach parking details, visit.brussels contact information and other relevant data. We trust this unique tool will benefit all travel professionals worldwide and encourage them to choose Brussels as their preferred destination. Rest assured that we will keep on improving and updating the offer in a city that is always on the move.

heritage
With its particularly rich historical and artistic heritage, Brussels continues to surprise and move visitors from all parts of the world. Famed for its legendary Grand-Place (listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site together with its adjoining streets) and the no less famous Manneken-Pis who is undeniably part and parcel of Brussels’ cultural heritage, the capital of Europe is also one of the cradles of Surrealism, in which René Magritte is a figurehead, and Art Nouveau. By 1890, Horta, Hankar, Cauchie and Blerot were breaking boundaries to create a total and organic art, deploying its curves and arabesques in magnificent townhouses, furniture, decorative objects, and crockery. This movement, as creative as it was short-lived, was to evolve into the sleeker and more geometric Art Deco of which many listed examples adorn the streets of the city. With its rich heritage, Brussels also boasts a wealth of museums that criss-cross its territory and are real hubs of tourist attraction. And that is not to mention its delightful gastronomic heritage: crunchy chips, aromatic gueuze and kriek beers, fluffy waffles and mesmerising chocolate.

art nouveau & art deco
The legacy of Art Nouveau (and to a lesser extent, Art Deco which developed in the 1920s) lives on in Brussels and flourishes with nearly every building around some of its quarters such as the well-to-do Ixelles and Saint-Gilles. These houses – some 500 intact buildings including shops, cafés and private houses – sprout up across the city. Belgium’s most prominent architect, Victor Horta, had caught on to the style just as it emerged and began to design brick-and-stone artworks of his own, which bore the Art Nouveau characteristics inside and out. The spiralling staircases resembled curving shells, the windows followed the roundness of flowers and cosmic geometrics, the columns and walls seemed to dance in a harmony of colours and parabola. In Brussels, the streets speak for themselves: it is a city where the creative genius of the fin de siècle bloomed, often understated, in the shadow of Europe’s other great metropolises. And yet, it is here that Art Nouveau remains unaffected, inspired, immortal in showing its complex and exquisite beauty to the public.

‹ europe
Brussels is the bustling capital of 500 million Europeans and also the second most cosmopolitan city where no less than 184 different nationalities live and mingle. Within the European quarter, this multicultural microcosm is more palpable than anywhere else in Brussels. Its imposing architecture, its countless restaurants, cafés, bookshops, grocery shops – worthy representatives of all EU countries, as well as interesting visits to important EU institutions and an array of international first-rate museums attract more and more visitors each year. The cultural offer reflects its intrinsic and colourful diversity: from the Parlamentarium, which plunges the visitor into the arcana of the European Union, to the recently opened and unique House of European History, created at the initiative of the European Parliament, from the iguanodons of the Natural Science Museum to the classic old-timer cars of Autoworld. Europe is your oyster!

‹ comic strip
Fans of comic strips? You won’t be disappointed! No doubt about it, Brussels is the capital of the comic strip. As you wind your way along the streets and alleyways, comic strip is everywhere! And it’s no wonder since many authors from Brussels have contributed to its rapid growth in popularity worldwide. Several museums, galleries, markets, festivals and specialist stores are entirely dedicated to the comic strip. But one of the most amazing activities is undoubtedly the famous comic strip trail. Meet Tintin, Astérix, Blake & Mortimer, Bob & Bobette (Spike & Suzy) or Lucky Luke as you wander down a street, around a museum or simply past a café. As you come across forty or so monumental frescoes you’ll get to know these legendary characters and their talented authors. The only walk of its kind!

green
Brussels, a region as nature intended. A very green capital city, in fact the greenest capital in Europe, that gives each of its inhabitants 28m² of nature: historic parks, pleasant little public gardens, broad tree-lined avenues, a wood, a forest and even farms and vegetable gardens! The further away from the centre, the more spectacular the green open spaces become: the Cinquantenaire Park and museums or Woluwe Park and its 71 acres of English style grounds. At the end of Avenue Louise, the Bois de la Cambre takes you seamlessly from the city to the countryside. So many opportunities for city dwellers and visitors to Brussels to stay in touch with nature and enjoy a break in the fresh air. Accompanied by its ‘greeters’, discover Brussels on foot or by bike and you’ll encounter almost nothing but trees! Sustainable features are everywhere in Brussels: on its roofs - from the royal library’s urban allotment to the EU institutions’ beehives - and in its slow food restaurants, eco-certified accommodation and Europe’s biggest pedestrian area. Also, objects are given a new lease of life at the composting workshops, repair cafés and the vintage boutiques.

jazz
Jazz has always been part of Brussels’ DNA. Let remind ourselves how personalities like Adolph Sax, Toots Thielemans and Django Reinhardt have shaped the history of jazz. Today it is still a vivid place for jazz, as evidenced by its daily live concerts in bars, clubs and bigger venues. Two music conservatories including a jazz department attract students from all over the world. Brussels is not only home to musicians with an international reputation, the city is also brimming with young talent. Furthermore, Brussels plays host to several jazz festivals, indoors and outdoors, attracting an increasing audience of both jazz buffs and neophytes. The most representative is undoubtedly the Brussels Jazz Weekend (former Brussels Jazz Marathon). With its 5 outdoor stages and over 80 indoor locations, it is one of the world’s biggest free city festivals. Large concert halls such as BOZAR, FLAGEY and AB don’t shy away from jazz, on the contrary: blues, jazz, soul, funk, swing and beyond, covering the entire gamut of jazz styles. There’s something in it for everyone!

1 day programme proposition • 11:00 – 14:00 : stroll around the flea market in the Marolles, the place where Toots Thielemans was born, pass his birth house at Rue Haute 241 and have a snack at typical ‘brown bar’ La Clef d’or. • 14:15 – 16:00 : visit MIM (Musical Instrument Museum) where they have an important collection of saxophones from the hand of Adolphe Sax. • 16:15 – 18:00 : Happy Hour: check out L’Archiduc or café Roskam in the Dansaert district and have a good Belgian beer there where you can often encounter jazz musicians to play or just sitting at the bar. • 18:15 – 19:15 : go for one of Brussel’s best spaghetti’s in the MONK café. • 20:00 – 22:00 : depending on the program, check out a concert in Flagey (30 min by bus), Bozar (15 min by foot) or AB (5 min by foot). If nothing jazzy is on the program that night, stop by at Music Village, they have a daily jazz program! • 22:00 - ...: if you’re still up for it in Sounds Jazz Club in Ixelles, you can

Discovering Brussels is quite a sport in its own right! However, for those in need of real action, the capital definitely offers them the opportunity to go out for just more than a breath of fresh air. Jogging in an oasis of greenery, swimming laps whilst enjoying a breathtaking architectural decor, keeping in shape at the gym in the city’s many 5-star hotels and fitness clubs, hitting a few white balls at golf clubs in and around Brussels, staying in shape for your next winter break on an all-year dry ski slope, diving in the second deepest pool in the world, trying out indoor rock climbing… There’s no doubt about it, in Brussels, you’re spoilt for choice! In addition, the capital of Europe is also proud to host some major sporting events such as the 20km of Brussels, the Memorial Van Damme, the Color Run, the Brussels Cycling Classic, the Eco Trail and the Brussels Marathon. Volleyball and football fans will certainly be looking forward to the 2019 European Volleyball Championship and 2020 UEFA European Football Championship as Brussels has been selected to be one of the hosts of both major competitions. Now, the ball’s in your court!

contemporary art
Located in the heart of the European continent, Brussels is fast becoming an international centre for modern and contemporary art. The cultural landscape is changing the face of the city. New museums and exhibitions are making the Belgian capital one of Europe’s top destinations, including opening a Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou (Paris), in an Art Deco former Citroën building, (opening date to be confirmed) alongside the canal. In terms of creation, Brussels’ assets are legion: the streets are marked by countless galleries, collectors and art centres to please an ever-increasing international audience. Not a day goes by without an event coming to stimulate its cultural life: opening of an exhibition, fair or trade show, conference or guided tour… Contemporary art is alive and evolving in all its forms. It’s even spilling out onto the streets and walls of the city. Numerous players contribute to the richness of its arts scene: the WIELS, BOZAR, the MIMA, the Centrale For Contemporary Art, Villa Empain and the Vanhaerents Collection. In short, Brussels is as eager as ever to share its passion for art with you!

geek & pop culture
It’s hardly surprising that pop culture feels at home in Brussels as this city definitely has the right qualities: a slightly crazy but cheerful creative spirit, and a sense of total fun! Welcome geeks from here and everywhere, come and celebrate the imagination! Gaming, virtual immersion, live escape games, interactive Media Art Laboratory, cool events such as Anima Festival with the best from the world of animation, Comic Con focusing on US comic books, science-fiction and fantasy, Made in Asia for the fans of Asian culture and avid manga readers, Youplay, a video game fair for insatiable gamers, the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival welcoming horror and fantasy film aficionados… One thing is for sure: there is no shortage of geek and popular culture in Brussels. urban culture
Street art, tattoo parlours, skate & roller parks, record stores, streetwear shops… Now more than ever, urban culture is a subject that has grabbed the imagination of young people (and those who are young at heart) all over the world. Not surprisingly, Brussels follows the trend. Street artists represent the voice of a constantly evolving capital city. They exhibit their work in public spaces, in plain view of all those with a keen eye who can spot it. Whether commissioned or spontaneous, monumental, controversial or more discreet, the artworks cover building walls, benches, lamp posts, shop fronts and facades, using the city itself as an exhibition space. And there is more: break dance battles, rap & slam contests, Belgian hip-hop scene, beatbox workshops… Urban culture is alive and kicking, and due to get livelier in Brussels. And one more thing: make sure to stop by the Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art presenting the most significant art of its time.

Belgian Comic Strip Center The BCSC offers a glimpse into a world where creativity has no limits. Discover the Belgian comic strip at its best in the heart of the capital of Europe!
© Daniel Fouss, Belgian Comic Strip Center
Before housing the Comic Strip Centre, this magnificent Art Nouveau building was a textile warehouse. Victor Horta was commissioned by Charles Waucquez in 1902 and designed an edifice to rival the great department stores of its era. Where children can discover their heroes like Tintin, Spirou, the Smurfs and where parents can enjoy a majestic Art Nouveau building, created by Victor Horta. The Comics Art Museum is just as much a tribute to the pioneers as a glimpse at contemporary comics art.

mim - Musical Instruments Museum (MRAH) As soon as it opened at the end of the 19th century, the luxurious Old England department store earned an excellent reputation for its highly distinctive building. The entrance to the building is a jewel of the Art Nouveau style. Although architect Paul Saintenoy did not design many Art Nouveau buildings, here he created a building that is characteristic of the style with the decorative elements attesting to their constructional role. Children will discover all kinds of instruments and will maybe have the chance to play them in a workshop.

René Magritte Museum House For 24 years René Magritte lived on the ground floor of this house, which was transformed into a museum 15 years ago.
In the dining room of this rented apartment, the artist painted nearly half of his body of work. This quiet spot was where his most creative period developed, resulting in awe-inspiring paintings!

lection of monumental works in the Belgian pavilion. His black-and-white photographs convey a sense of stillness, and combine intimacy and distance to create a private, secluded world whose meaning remains undefined. For BOZAR, Braeckman adapts the project to the architecture of Victor Horta. From Venice to Brussels, from one iconic interbellum building to another. www.bozar.be FERNAND LÉGER. BEAUTY IS EVERYWHERE 09/02/2018 > 03/06/2018 – BOZAR A pioneer of uncompromising modernism, Fernand Léger (1881-1955) often worked with filmmakers, poets, choreographers, composers, and architects. This first Belgian retrospective devoted to Léger since 1956, illustrates the ground-breaking forms that can result from interdisciplinary exchanges. Visitors will discover how his impressive and varied oeuvre encouraged generations of artists to seek the essence of beauty in a clear style with bright colours. www.bozar.be ANIMA 09/02/2018 > 18/02/2018 - Flagey Anima, Brussels’ annual international animated film festival, is an internationally renowned event. No longer, since avant-garde artists seized upon the genre to bring radical change to art. For the first time, this retrospective presents 400 years in the evolution of the most magnificent Spanish still lifes: from the first bodegónes of the 17th century and the personal interpretations of Velázquez and Goya to the experiments in form of Picasso, Dalí and Miró and the recent work of contemporary Spanish artists. www.bozar.be BRUSELAS FLAMENCO FESTIVAL 28/02/2018 > 03/03/2018 - BOZAR www.bozar.be

The architect had trouble curbing the sculptor’s desire to leave his mark on the building’s architecture. But the result was breathtaking: although classical at first sight, the building turned out to be very innovative and clearly announced the emergence of Art Nouveau. www.mkg-mrah.be LISTEN! times on François I of France and his relationship with Henry VIII of England was equally stormy. But it was in their era that medieval Europe moved into the modern age and of the three, Charles was the most powerful. Why Brussels? During Charles’s 40-year reign, beginning in 1515, he spent a lot of time at the Coudenberg palace, where he abdicated in 1555. So Brussels was a major hub of the first empire “on which the sun never set”. On their visits, people have always felt the need to write something to express their ideas or feelings and to leave scatalogical or sexual drawings, in one of the few places where there was no censorship and no risk. In advance of the exhibition, the Sewers Museum has asked the public to submit photographs of interesting examples. www.sewersmuseum.brussels UNDERSTREET ART 16/05/2018 > 19/11/2018 – Sewers Museum Associated with protest since its emergence in the 1970s, street art is often ephemeral. Graffiti can be removed and walls demolished or covered up. But street artists have continued to find ingenious and acrobatic ways of getting their messages across, often in highly visible locations that are difficult to reach and clean. These days, street art can be found in museums and changes hands for a fortune in galleries. www.sewersmuseum.brussels BELGIAN PRIDE 19/05/2018 – city centre Every year, Pride offers everyone a day of complete freedom to be yourself: gay, lesbian, bi, trans, inter, queer and straight, and all this in the heart of Europe. The surreal, at times vulgar, Urbanus strips have been a huge commercial success. www.cbbd.be BRIGHT BRUSSELS FESTIVAL Since 2016, the Brussels-Capital Region has mandated visit.brussels to organise the endof-year illuminations in and around Chaussée de Charleroi, Avenue Louise, Rue Stas, Place Jourdan, Dejonckere, Toison d’Or, Boulevard de Waterloo, Rue du Grand Cerf. EVENTS 2019 and later… BRUSSELS AND BRUEGEL Brussels and Bruegel are inextricably linked. Not only the most important part of his life took place in Brussels but he is also buried there and you can still admire an important part of his oeuvre in the finest museums of Brussels. To be closer to the centre of money and power and thus potential clients, Brueghel moved to Brussels in 1563 and established himself in the Marolles. In the 16th century Brussels was one of the most important political centres in Europe. At that time the Chapel area, now known as the Marolles, was all but a working class neighbourhood. The spacious house in which he lived was located in one of the richest streets of Brussels. Be sure to visit Bruegel’s Visitor Centre and the exhibition at the Hall Gate Museum to get a better understanding of this vibrant period in Brussels history. Brussels served as a great inspiration for Bruegel: two-thirds of his total of forty paintings were painted there! A few minutes’ walk from his house, on the Mont des Arts, lived his powerful patrons. Today it houses an important part of Bruegel’s work: after the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium possesses the most important collection of paintings by Bruegel, and the Royal Library holds no fewer than 90 prints! All these treasures will be exhibited to be admired fully in 2019. After his death, Bruegel was buried in the Chapel Church in the Marolles where his epitaph can still be visited. Reason enough for Brussels to devote a great many events to this world-famous artist in connection with the 450th anniversary of his death. In 2019 various organizations will program guided walks around Bruegel and all the locations related to him and the fascinating period during which he lived. Come and (re)discover Bruegel’s world and his work in the historic heart of Brussels! BERNARD VAN ORLEY - BRUSSELS AND THE RENAISSANCE 20/02/2018 till 26/05/2019 – BOZAR For this historic exhibition of works by the 16th century painter Bernard Van Orley, a pivotal figure in the Renaissance in the Low Countries, works from all over the world are brought together in Brussels, the location of his famous workshop. www.bozar.be
LE CHAT MUSEUM End of 2020 Due to its growing popularity, Le Chat will undoubtedly by a fantastic draw for a museum dedicated to humorous drawing along with many other art forms. What’s more, Brussels, as the capital of Europe and comic strips, will offer the general public a site devoted to one of the comics trip industry’s most prolific creators. “A large intergenerational museum, that’s both rebellious and cheerful, at the heart of the historical Place Royale complex.”

Parkings for coaches The coaches or tourist buses are also heavy traffic in the city centre. Lots of coaches (autocars) park around tourist poles like the Grand-Place, the European district, the Heysel,... This raises a real problem for the available space and the relations with the neighborhood. The regional plan of development (PRD) plans parking lots for short and long parking, with places that are reserved for the buses.
Parking zones There are 3 types of parking zones: short, medium and long term. • short stop: up to 30 minutes • medium stop: up to 5 hours • long stop: more than 5 hours In parking zones for short stops, buses may thus park up to 30 minutes. In these places tourists can quickly be dropped off and/or picked up. In the parking zones for medium stops, a bus may park up to 5 hours. These zones allow to park while visiting an event, site or attraction. In parking zones for long stops, buses may park longer than 5 hours. These zones allow to park overnight.

The connection between the two owed much to a shared interest in Mallarmé; it developed after the war, as Magritte’s “Renoir period” was followed by his exuberant “vache” period.
