WELCOME TO THE HE RENEWED VIBRANCY OF BUFFALO
beats within the hearts of its people, who never stopped believing in the splendor of our city — and who now welcome visitors to experience
the best version of what we’ve all been in love with since our first walk down Delaware Avenue, trip to Ted’s Hot Dogs or step inside Kleinhans Music Hall.
FOOD TRUCK TUESDAY AT LARKIN SQUARE
RHEA ANNA
This year, we’d like to show you around the New Buffalo. We’d like to introduce you to the restored Darwin Martin House, the food trucks of Larkin Square and the eclectic entertainment at Riverworks. We’d like to lead you down our renovated Main Street and point out downtown’s proliferation of new restaurants before a round of Hayburners at Big Ditch Brewery. We’d like to escort you through the reverberating urban enclaves of Elmwood Village and Allentown, order some Beef on Weck sushi at Seabar, then go for a film at the rejuvenated North Park Theatre. Most of all, we’d like to show you what hard work from a devoted populace has accomplished. Beautiful architecture has been restored and repurposed. New galleries exhibit the next generation of artists. Craft breweries shine a light on the Queen City’s rich brewing tradition. And Canalside, the city’s new public square, has returned the water’s edge to kayakers, paddle boarders and concertgoers.
Reimagining and rebuilding our city hasn’t been easy, but we invite you to have a look around and see for yourself. We’re ready for our Instagram close-up. – M IC H A E L FA R R E L L

Buffalo should learn to boast. It’s exciting to visit a post-industrial city where you can tour the abandoned grain elevators of Silo City or explore the waterfront on water bikes. It’s refreshing to eat somewhere where trail-blazing eateries are helping to revitalize patches of the city, where hungry citizens are grateful for every new thing to eat, and where businesses are genuinely pleased to serve you. EXTREME MAKEOVER BUFFALO IS AT A MEMORABLE POINT IN ITS HISTORY. A tipping point. An inflection point. A point of departure. Call it what you will. By any name, the point is the same: a new city – a re-born city – is emerging after several decades of economic struggle. A New Buffalo is being built on a foundation of extraordinary architecture, visionary city planning and acclaimed cultural institutions. This legacy of the city’s 19th and 20th century heyday is being restored, rejuvenated and readied for visitors. And 2016 is the year this storied past meets an exciting future. Here are eight reasons to visit Buffalo in the year to come.
1. F RANK LLOYD WRIGHT’S MARTIN HOUSE COMPLEX Our story starts with Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House Complex – an exhilarating example of how Buffalo has summoned the will to remake itself as a 21st century city and vibrant tourism destination. The Martin House was Wright’s largest residential commission when it was built in 1905, but fell into disrepair in the late 20th century. A grand re-opening this fall will herald the completion of a 20-year restoration and allow visitors to experience the entire campus in all its restored grandeur. darwinmartinhouse.org

ED HEALY
2. H OTEL HENRY URBAN RESORT & CONFERENCE CENTER Much like the Martin House, the Richardson Olmsted Complex has succeeded against all odds. After sitting vacant for the better part of four decades, this National Historic Landmark will find new life in early 2017 with the opening of the 88-room Hotel Henry Urban Resort and Conference Center. The hotel will be joined by the Buffalo Architecture Center, which will give visitors a go-to spot to learn about the city’s world-renowned architecture through a series of permanent and traveling exhibits. hotelhenry.com
3. A RCTIC EDGE Another venerable institution reinventing itself is the Buffalo Zoo. Located in the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Delaware Park, the Zoo recently built the Arctic Edge, a $14 million, one-and-ahalf acre habitat for the polar bears that includes an underwater viewing area, giving zoo visitors a face-to-face encounter with one of nature’s most impressive animals. buffalozoo.org
CANALSIDE
JOE CASCIO
4. C ANALSIDE Buffalo became a 19th century boomtown and a place where great fortunes were made because of its advantageous site at the confluence of the Buffalo River, Lake Erie and the Erie Canal. Today, a once industrial waterfront has become the city’s playground, hosting more than 1,000 annual events including artisan markets, yoga classes, concerts, curling leagues and festivals of every stripe. Stay for the lightshow that illuminates the Connecting Terminal grain elevator every evening from dusk to 11 p.m.

7. BUFFALO HARBOR STATE PARK
5. R IVERWORKS
Grain scoopers, stevedores and longshoremen may have once ruled the waves along Buffalo’s shoreline, but today the kids have the run of the place. Buffalo’s Outer Harbor is a natural escape from nearby downtown with its marinas, parks, bike trails, kayak launch spots, and Buffalo Harbor State Park, a nautical themed playground emulating dunes, waves, ships, rocky shores and whirlpools.
Until recently, only factories, warehouses and grain elevators used the land along the Buffalo River. RiverWorks changed that with its bar, restaurant, concert venue, roller derby track, riverfront patio and hockey and curling rinks. A craft brewery housed in a grain elevator and a beer garden will be added to the RiverWorks menu in 2016.

8. N EW HOTELS
6. H ARBORCENTER HARBORCENTER is the straw that stirs the drink of the New Buffalo, a multifaceted sports, entertainment and hospitality complex that has taken Buffalo’s already stellar reputation as a great hockey city – and amateur sports destination – to a whole new level. The $200 million complex features two NHL size rinks, a Marriott Hotel, (716) Food & Sport, a flagship Tim Horton’s and retailers at the Shops at HARBORCENTER.
Buffalo’s accommodations continue to evolve along with the city, meaning more choices for travelers. Summer 2016 will see the opening of the Westin Buffalo in the heart of the city’s entertainment district. The 118-room hotel will feature a 6,000 square foot outdoor patio and upscale restaurant. Nearby, local restauranteur Mark Croce is restoring the centuryold Curtiss Building as a state-ofthe-art 68-room boutique hotel. The Curtiss Hotel will feature a rooftop lounge, restaurant, revolving bar and all-weather hot springs.

MARTIN COOKS
You’ll Eat It Up!
BY C H R I S T A GLENNIE SE YCHE W
BUFFALO HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GREAT PLACE TO EAT. Its early populace of Italians, Poles, and Germans laid the groundwork for a long history of comforting, hearty fare designed to keep blue collar workers fueled. But about a decade ago, Buffalo’s culinary scene started to change. Chef-owned restaurants began to embrace the agricultural bounty of our region and the notion of ever-changing seasonal menus. New diners, tantalized by what they
saw on the Food Network and the internet, began to seek more adventurous culinary experiences. An influx of refugees and immigrants from Africa and Asia infused pockets of the city and its surrounding suburbs with affordable, authentic ethnic fare.
have opened, offering diners a wealth of choices. While there is still plenty of hearty blue collar fare available in Buffalo at corner bars and old school Italian-American places, there is also a wealth of new and enticing edible experiences to be found.
Flash forward ten years and Buffalo is an exciting food destination attracting tourists from near and far. Dozens of chef-owned restaurants
High brow or low brow, refined or relaxed, Buffalo’s food scene has more to offer now then ever. And yes, we still have plenty of chicken wings.
] Ingredients of a New Buffalo Chef Kevin Lin owns and operates Sun Restaurant on Buffalo’s West Side. Known for introducing Buffalo to Burmese cuisine and its specialties, such as ohn-nokhakswe and tea leaf salad, Sun also serves fresh Thai favorites and a menu of dishes devoted to showcasing “forbidden” black rice.

Q: What is the best thing about cooking in Buffalo? A: Buffalo is the best place to be a chef because of how open Buffalonians are. They embrace new flavors and ideas. Q: Is there an aspect of the city’s current restaurant scene you’re most excited about? A: Buffalo is booming and there are new restaurants and new
ethnic cuisines popping up all over Western New York. It is a very exciting time for us. Q: What makes Sun Restaurant unique? A: We offer Burmese and Thai, as well as our Black Rice Bar –the first in the United States. We are also able to customize dishes according to customer
needs, easily accommodating gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan diners. We only serve food that is good for us and free of MSG. -C.G.S.
BUFFALO CLASSICS
ModernTwists AND THEIR
Western New York has more than its fair share of culinary concoctions it considers its own, and most of them have been favorites for 50 years or more. Since today’s Buffalonians have grown up with these foods as part of their shared culinary experience, it’s no surprise that a climate now rich with innovation has spawned more than one great spin on each of these classics. – C.G.S
NICK GRAY
BEEF ON ‘WECK The Beef on Kummelweck sandwich (known to locals as simply Beef on ‘Weck) earned its place in the annals of local history by being a delicious, affordable, and simple way for any tavern to feed throngs of hungry workers with short lunch breaks and shallow pockets. Made simply of handcarved hot roast beef, a dab of au jus, a smattering of fresh horseradish, and a roll encrusted with caraway seeds and rock salt, the Beef on ‘Weck is a sandwich to be reckoned with.
MODERN TWIST: Seabar’s take on Beef on ‘Weck is a salty sweet sushi roll flavor bomb. Sushi rice is rolled around perfectly cooked tenderloin, topped with thin slices of delicate beef carpaccio, strewn with bits of salt and caraway, and served with creamy horseradish sauce. – C.G.S
CHRISTINA MEALY
SPONGE CANDY Sponge candy is an old world treat made of crunchy sweet honeycomb toffee enrobed in chocolate. Some argue over which chocolatier makes it best, while others busy themselves with the debate over whether dark, milk, or orange chocolate is the ideal coating for the succulent sweet. MODERN TWIST: Visitors can find sponge candy in nearly any
chocolate shop in the region, but Resurgence Brewing Company, located on Buffalo’s West Side, is the only brewer in town making a Sponge Candy Stout. – C.G.S. DONNIE BURTLESS
CHICKEN WINGS Oh chicken wing, worthy of a sonnet, fried crispy and dressed in hot butter and spicy Frank’s Red Hot — how could anyone come to Buffalo and not seek a platter of you before leaving? Maybe because the word Buffalo has become synonymous with a flavor known all over the world?
MODERN TWIST: One of our favorite twists on the

BEEF ON WECK
The best beef on weck in WNY is found at Bar Bill Tavern in East Aurora. Not only have they perfected cooking the beef to a medium-rare temperature, but the roll is perfect. On top of all of that, if you’re lucky enough to grab a seat at the bar, you can watch them slice the beef and put the sandwiches together right in front of you.
HOT DOGS
My wife and I eat at Ted’s Hot Dogs at least once a month. It’s become our favorite place to eat when we want something affordable and quick. The hot dogs are always on point, cooked on a charcoal grill, and their hot sauce is excellent.
PIZZA
If I’m in the mood for traditional WNY pizza (sloppy, sweeter sauce, charred pepperoni cups, air bubbles in the crust), then I’m going to Imperial Pizza in South Buffalo. Sure, you have to eat it on the hood of your car (for the moment), but I think it tastes better that way.
FISH FRY
My favorite fish fry is at Gene McCarthy’s in the Old First Ward. Their fish fry on its own is fantastic (they use quality fish) but underneath is a combination of fries, coleslaw, macaroni salad and potato salad. Donnie is one of the co-founders of Buffaloeats.org, a leading food blog in the Queen City.

JENNIFER REED
In a town where good chicken wing joints are on every corner, Nine Eleven Tavern in South Buffalo stands out from the crowd by creating the most unique and delicious hot sauce around.
FISH FRY
Staffed by churchgoers on Fridays during the Lenten season, fish fries became a way for cold Buffalonians to socialize during the darkest days of winter. Today fish fries remain unchanged in content, but they’re no longer reserved for Lent or Catholics. Large pieces of white fish are battered and deep fried, served with tartar sauce or a lemon wedge and sides such as fries, mashed potatoes, hot German potato salad or macaroni salad. – C.G.S.
PIZZA Not as thick as a deep dish, not as thin as NYC-style pizza, Buffalo’s pizza sports a pillowy, chewy crust smothered in sauce and shredded mozzarella. Sure, we have fancy woodfired pies all over town, but Buffalostyle pizza is nearly a way of life for some folks. Pro tip: Don’t be surprised if you see a local dip their pizza in the bleu cheese dressing served alongside an order of chicken wings — it’s a thing. – C.G.S.
DONNIE BURTLESS
CHARBROILED HOT DOGS After nearly ninety years in the business, it’s safe to say that Ted’s is the place for hot dogs in Western New York. At Ted’s, locally made Sahlen’s hot dogs are chargrilled over flaming hot coals and served with your choice of toppings, but most notably with dill pickle spears or chili. There are great dogs to be had all over New York, but Buffalo’s are really tough to beat. – C.G.S.

Bring a girlfriend or two for a truly great escape. BY ANNE BOKMA
Y
ou know it’s going to be a great girlfriend getaway when your weekend starts with an eager-to-please butler jogging out to your car to unload your bags even before you’ve popped the trunk. “James” (yes, that’s really his name) is one of a half dozen butlers on staff at the elegant 28-room Mansion on Delaware in downtown Buffalo that dates back to 1869. The butlers are happy to drive you around town, pour you a complimentary drink in the drawing room at cocktail hour — even run you a hot bath in your whirlpool tub. Their white glove treatment sets the stage for a couple of days of being spoiled rotten in Buffalo.

TAR TREATMENT AT S GROOM SERVICE
The pampering continues when we head to Groom Service Beauty & Dry Bar, an upscale beauty bar on the ground floor of the elegantly restored Hotel @ The Lafayette. Here, positive feminine energy abounds, and not just because this grand neoclassical hotel was designed in the early 1900s by Louise Blanchard Bethune, the first American woman who worked as a professional architect. Katie Ambrose, a New York makeup artist to the stars who recently moved back to Buffalo to open the salon, gives her clients the kind of luxurious beauty experiences usually reserved for celebrities. My girlfriend Donna and I spend a couple of glorious hours with Katie that begins with a mini meditation session involving crystals and “angelic spray” to help balance our chakras and continues with a facial, “intuitive make-up lesson” and hair styling. A final application of feathery false eyelashes has us coquettishly batting our eyes over our lunch menus when we pop in next door to the Pan-American Grill & Brewery to fortify ourselves for an afternoon of shopping with scallop cakes and salad.

It’s no secret that Canadians love to power shop Buffalo’s outlet stores, but we opt to bypass the mega malls for some good old fashioned street shopping. We spend a few hours strolling the mile-long Elmwood Avenue, checking out the eclectic range of dozens of retail offerings. We peruse furnishings made by local craftspeople at RÓ, float in the aroma of hundreds of exotic seasonings at the elaborately stocked Penzeys Spices, ooh and ahh over the unique gift selections (dragonfly salad tongs anyone?) at the charming Everything Elmwood, browse bestsellers at Talking Leaves, the city’s oldest bookstore, and try on flowing summer dresses in a range of boutiques, from Anna Grace to Blush and Second Chic, an upcycle consignment shop where I pick up a vintage halter dress for a bargain basement $22. When we stop to fuel up on caffeine, even the SPoT coffee shop is a delight with its powder blue Victorian settee and tempting display of red velvet donuts, a local specialty that proves irresistible.

O UT ON THE TOWN
Our extended shopping trip means there’s little time for dinner so once again the butlers at the Mansion accommodate us by preparing plates of pizza and fresh fruit before driving us to the opening night of the raucous musical, The Book of Mormon, at Shea’s Performing Arts Center. The restored theatre, which features a full season of blockbuster Broadway musicals, boasts eight-foot tall crystal chandeliers and intricately painted ceilings in the lobby, recalling its glory days as an elaborate movie house dating from 1926. After the show, we aren’t quite ready to call it a night. Fortunately, another theatregoer recommends a stop at Buffalo Proper, a restaurant and bar that tips its hat to the prohibition era when wealthy Buffalonians found a way to sneak a drink in defiance of the 18th amendment. Here, master barman and cocktail curator Jon Karel regales us with further theatrical antics, displaying his frenetic energy while concocting fancifully named drinks such as Bare Knuckle Boxer, Snake Charmer and Killer Bee’s. It’s the perfect end to a perfect day. Tomorrow, we have a couple more stops to finish our Buffalo getaway – including an afternoon outing to Canalside, a beautiful new waterfront area with free events from pilates classes to classical concerts, and what will prove to be a very memorable five-course prix fixe menu with wine pairings at Martin Cooks, the city’s first example of chef’s counter dining where guests look on while the chef prepares his signature dishes in an open kitchen. But right now, as the clock hits midnight, we’re ready to head back to our fluffy beds at the Mansion. We ring our butler who arrives in minutes. As I climb into the backseat I utter words I’ve been looking forward to saying all day: “Home, James.”

CULTIVATING BUFFALO’S REBIRTH Despite the wintry reputation that typically precedes our fair city, Buffalo can claim a spot among the top garden tourism destinations in the United States. Anchored by an emerald necklace of Frederick Law Olmsted-designed parks and parkways, the magnificent crystal palace at the
Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens and Garden Walk Buffalo – the largest and longest-running free garden tour in the entire country, the Queen City offers garden lovers a summer-long bouquet of open gardens, bus tours, garden walks, lectures and workshops.
How Does Your Garden Grow? Q: What makes Buffalo a
great garden city?
A: After touring gardens in many other cities and countries I am confident that Buffalo is not only a great gardening city—but a unique one. Garden writers coined the term Buffalo Gardening Style when they saw the breadth and depth of the plantings and the artistry in our private, one-of-a-kind gardens. Q: What should every visitor know
about Buffalo’s garden scene?
A: Visitors will meet unforgettable artistic, often quirky gardeners who will share their personal spaces — like little glimpses into their lifestyles. The gardeners (over 400 during Garden Walk Buffalo weekend and hundreds more during Open Gardens

and Garden Tour days) astound visitors with unexpected art, fresh plant combinations, vertical and small space gardening, as well as urban farming and community garden innovations. Guests are astounded by the sheer exuberance and openness of our generous people — and they do it all for free. Q: How have gardens changed Buffalo’s reputation nationwide? A: Gardening and a greening mentality have been pivotal in changing our image. Gardening tourism has put us on covers or in articles in at least sixty national magazines and countless blogs. Great gardening is contributing to a better Buffalo region, thanks to the tireless organizers, volunteers, and most of all, the irrepressible gardeners.

WATER WORLD Nearly 20 percent of the world’s fresh water flows right by Buffalo. We make the most of this resource by kayaking, paddle boarding, wind surfing, fishing, swimming, sailing and boating throughout our glorious springs, summers and falls. Our lakes and rivers also make for some beautiful landscapes as master photographer Dan Burkholder found out during a weeklong stay in 2015.

LET US TAKE YOU BACK TO M Y GRANDMA’ S KITCHEN Frankie Primo’s +39 is a restaurant about family. WNY is a melting pot of ethnic backgrounds, and of course a lot of Italians...sauce on Sundays, manicotti on Christmas, ravioli on Easter, steak and Spaghetti on family birthdays. Our patio screams al fresco dining whether it be pizza, pasta, a sandwich, or just bread and butter with a slice of prosciutto and a nice bottle of wine. Let our friendly service, fresh quality ingredients, and “modern rustic” atmosphere take you back to the old country, “Little Italy” or just my grandmother’s kitchen table. Let us make you a part of our family, if only for a couple hours.

In the BUF MUTUAL RIVERFRONT PARK
I’m blown away by the amount of nature and green everywhere I go in Buffalo. I also like that there’s art everywhere you look in Buffalo – murals, utility boxes are painted on the street, sculptures. The city is very arts-minded, and there’s a sense that everything is not new, but there’s repurposing of the old here, and I love that. LAUREN, SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA Interview and photo by Nancy J.
