the guide Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay

Welcome “Canterbury’s past is as rich as it comes” says the latest Lonely Planet guide to Britain. This worldfamous cathedral city was one of medieval Europe’s great places of pilgrimage and knowledge. Today with its international visitors and four universities - it still has a distinctly cosmopolitan feel. Less than an hour from London and only 20 minutes from the coastal towns of Herne Bay and Whitstable, it’s that corner of England that’s almost touching France.

How to Get Here

48

People come to the district from across the globe for world-class heritage, for culture and festivals, to visit and to study, to shop, eat and hang out. The extraordinary cathedral dominates the medieval streets within the city walls. Among the listed buildings, a boldly modern theatre (named after the city’s famous son Christopher Marlowe) has been built on the river bank, and an art museum has been restored and doubled in size. To the south is St. Augustine’s Abbey, part of the World Heritage Site, and England’s first seat of learning.

You may be in a city, but you get a strong sense of being in the Garden of England, too. There are riverside gardens and even a cider-making orchard within the city itself. Then there’s all the local produce in cafés, pubs and restaurants: Romney Marsh lamb, Kent cherries, ale from local hops, awardwinning fizz from Kentish vineyards. To the north of the city is one of England’s largest ancient woodlands, the Blean, and, less than a 7-mile cycle away at Canterbury’s coast, there’s the seaside town of Whitstable, for England’s finest oysters.

There’s something warm and mellow about this intimate European city. Crowds throng around the entrance to the cathedral and the busy high street. Thousands of students add to the vibe. It’s lively and fun. But it’s also remarkably easy – in a moment – to step off the beaten track into some quiet oasis where you’ll hear nothing but birdsong and the splash of oars on the narrow, gently flowing River Stour.

Enjoy the coastal scene by travelling just 20 minutes to Whitstable or Herne Bay, where you will find everything you need from independent shops to purchase those quirky items, try the local produce from the huts on the pier and be amazed at the historic Clock Tower. Both Whitstable and Herne Bay host some of the best sunsets in the county and are known to hold many events to satisfy all ages.

Heritage

Pilgrims have flocked to Canterbury ever since the martyrdom of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170, and across the centuries this pilgrimage has continued, as people from far and wide fill ancient thoroughfares in their search for inspiration. Each of these parts of the historical tapestry of Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay are celebrated through a plethora of museums, galleries and lovingly maintained historical sites of interest, all of which seamlessly blend into the district’s vibrant, cosmopolitan feel.

Canterbury Festival 14 October – 4 November 2017 canterburyfestival.co.uk 01227 452853 There is no better time to visit Canterbury than during its annual international arts festival. With over 200 events to choose from, there is something for everyone, making Autumn 2017 the perfect time to plan your trip to Canterbury.

FLYING THE FLAG FOR CANTERBURY

One of Canterbury’s finest features is the tranquil River Stour, calmly wending its way through its historic centre. On the banks of the river, one can find a small company that exemplifies the passion and enthusiasm that sets Canterbury apart as a destination. Canterbury Historic River Tours offer historic guided tours of Canterbury from the unique perspective of the river, combining an enjoyable light hearted commentary with outstanding views of natural scenery. The 2016 season has once again seen them recognised through the awards and accolades they have earned. This year the Company became a finalist in the national Visit England Awards for Excellence 2016, in which they placed in the top five tourism experiences in the country. This is a particular achievement considering the small size of the business; they were indeed the minnows of the competition, up against some true giants of the travel trade! Most impressively, at the end of the 2016 Season the company was

announced winner of Luxury Travel Guides’ European Awards 2017, where they were announced to be Europe’s ‘Unique Tour Operator of the Year’. European acclaim is certainly an incredible achievement for such a small business. It is a feather in the cap of Canterbury’s visitor offer on an international scale, considering that we sit at the gateway to Europe and our city is the first port of call for many visitors from the continent. Businesses like Canterbury Historic River Tours set the ‘Canterbury Standard’ that the city upholds in all areas, from the quality of its attractions to the beauty of its scenery, the uniqueness of its culture to the quality of local food and drink.

Truly, Canterbury has it all!

Each October the Festival transforms Canterbury, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy a wealth of theatre, music, comedy, circus, cabaret, art, sculpture, walks and talks. It’s a unique time to explore the City with entertainment hidden down medieval alleyways and cultural landmarks brimming with activities for the whole family. The 2016 Festival saw internationally acclaimed artists come to Kent to perform a wide range of shows. The King’s Mile became the home to a series of artist portraits, the Cathedral’s Chapter House was alight with 200 bulbs as part of an international exhibition from Bernardi Roig and a roaming 1920’s vintage

dance hall housing circus, dance, cabaret, comedy and plenty of music landed in the city centre. While the original Canterbury Festival was created in 1929 within the confines of the Cathedral walls, it now encompasses the entire city including performances at the Marlowe Theatre, Colyer-Fergusson Hall, King’s School, the Westgate Tower and a variety of local churches.

The full programme for 2017 will be announced in July. For more information, or to join the Festival eNews list, please visit www.canterburyfestival.co.uk

Culture

Whether you want to visit a museum or six, see some fantastic local artwork in one of our many galleries or enjoy the critically acclaimed Canterbury Festival, there is something to suit everyone’s taste. Canterbury’s connection to the arts spans back centuries. Roman Canterbury reportedly featured one of the largest amphitheatres in northern Europe and ever since, performance arts have been part of the fabric of the district. One of the city’s most famous sons, Christopher Marlowe, was born in Canterbury in 1564 and Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales continue to provide the backbone to the district’s heritage. Famous actors such as Peter Cushing have close links to Whitstable, and Herne Bay’s ‘famous faces’ wall along the seafront demonstrates the close connection to the arts and galleries open to the public.

The Canterbury district’s stunning landscape has inspired numerous artists over the centuries – from the rolling hills of the North Downs to the iconic landmarks of Canterbury’s historic city centre.
