People come to the district from across the globe for world-class heritage, for culture and festivals, to visit and to study, to shop, eat and hang out. The extraordinary cathedral dominates the medieval streets within the city walls. Among the listed buildings, a boldly modern theatre (named after the city’s famous son Christopher Marlowe) has been built on the river bank, and an art museum has been restored and doubled in size. To the south is St. Augustine’s Abbey, part of the World Heritage Site, and England’s first seat of learning.
You may be in a city, but you get a strong sense of being in the Garden of England, too. There are riverside gardens and even a cider-making orchard within the city itself. Then there’s all the local produce in cafés, pubs and restaurants: Romney Marsh lamb, Kent cherries, ale from local hops, awardwinning fizz from Kentish vineyards. To the north of the city is one of England’s largest ancient woodlands, the Blean, and, less than a 7-mile cycle away at Canterbury’s coast, there’s the seaside town of Whitstable, for England’s finest oysters.
There’s something warm and mellow about this intimate European city. Crowds throng around the entrance to the cathedral and the busy high street. Thousands of students add to the vibe. It’s lively and fun. But it’s also remarkably easy – in a moment – to step off the beaten track into some quiet oasis where you’ll hear nothing but birdsong and the splash of oars on the narrow, gently flowing River Stour.
Enjoy the coastal scene by travelling just 20 minutes to Whitstable or Herne Bay, where you will find everything you need from independent shops to purchase those quirky items, try the local produce from the huts on the pier and be amazed at the historic Clock Tower. Both Whitstable and Herne Bay host some of the best sunsets in the county and are known to hold many events to satisfy all ages.

Unearth the story of Canterbury from millions of years ago to the present, with one of England’s finest surviving medieval buildings at Canterbury Heritage Museum. 6
Pilgrims have flocked to Canterbury ever since the martyrdom of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170, and across the centuries this pilgrimage has continued, as people from far and wide fill ancient thoroughfares in their search for inspiration.

Over the centuries the district has had many guises; from being an important agricultural and fishing hub in the Roman period to recognition as one of the most important sites for the worldwide Anglican Communion. Each of these parts of the historical tapestry of Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay are celebrated through a plethora of museums, galleries and lovingly maintained historical sites of interest, all of which seamlessly blend into the district’s vibrant, cosmopolitan feel.

Founded in AD597, it is the Mother Church of the worldwide Anglican Commmunion and sire of Archbishop Thomas Becket’s martyrdom. The cathedral houses a Romanesque Crypt, 12th century Quire and 14th century Nave. Stunning medieval stained glass windows depict miracles and royal connections. Facilities range from guided tours to first class accommodation and group hospitality. Admission charge
St. Augustine’s Abbey Longport, CT1 1PF Tel: 01227 767 345 www.english-heritage.org.uk/staugustinesabbey This great abbey was founded shortly after AD597 by St. Augustine and marked the rebirth of Christianity in southern England. Situated outside of the city walls, it was originally created as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent. At the impressive abbey you can also enjoy the museum and free audio tour. The museum contains artefacts and stone carvings found at the abbey during excavations. There is a wide range of objects covering many centuries, including a skeleton and the costumes worn by actor splaying King Ethelbert and Queen Bertha of Kent in a celebration of St. Augustine’s arrival. St. Martin’s Church North Holmes Road, CT1 1PW www.martinpaul.org St Martin’s was the private chapel of Queen Bertha of Kent in the 6th century before Augustine arrived from Rome. Shortly before 1844, a hoard of gold coins which may date from the late 6th century was found in the churchyard, one of which is the Liudhard medalet, which bears an image of a diademed figure with a legend referring to Liudhard. The churchyard contains the graves of many notable local families and well known people including Thomas Sidney Cooper, RA (artist) and Mary Tourtel, the creator of Rupert Bear. Free admission. A treasure chest of permanent collections, stories, ideas, creativity and learning means there is always something to discover. Begun by William the Conqueror around 1070, it is one of the three original royal castle in Kent. Today the roofless shell is surrounded by a quiet garden; inside you can climb partly way up one of the towers and there are interpretation panels, a tactile model of the castle (circa 1200) and elevated viewing areas. There is no better time of year to visit Canterbury than during its annual international arts festival in late October. Canterbury Festival, Kent’s International Arts Festival, is the highlight of the county’s cultural calendar. Drawing an audience of over 60,000 from London and the South East with over 200 events, the programme brings the best of the world’s artists to Canterbury, and shows off the City and its performers to locals and visitors alike. The Festival fills Canterbury’s historic streets and buildings with a wide range of events spanning Music, Theatre & Dance, Comedy, Cabaret, Science, Circus, Exhibitions, Walks, Talks and family friendly shows. 2015’s programme transformed Canterbury Cathedral into a cinema for two nights to screen Murder in the Cathedral and produced a sell-out performance by the band Texas. The two week period also saw the streets filled with music thanks to internationally acclaimed artist Luke Jerram’s street piano project Play Me I’m Yours. While the original Canterbury Festival started in the 1920s, 2016 marks the 33rd Festival in its present form. The popularity of the Festival continues to grow and it can now boast a Spiegeltent (one of only a handful of original 1920s travelling dance halls) as one of its venues alongside the Marlowe Theatre, Colyer-Fergusson Hall, King’s School and Canterbury Cathedral.

There are so many activities in the Canterbury district for you to participate in such as adrenaline-pumping watersports on the coast or a round of golf on one of the high quality courses. If you would rather be a spectator, Canterbury is home to the Kent Cricket Ground where you can enjoy top notch local and international events. For a more leisurely treat enjoy a personalised, chauffer driven sightseeing tour. Reculver Lane, Herne Bay CT6 6SU Reculver Towers are used today as a main landmark for shipping in the North Sea. They are the remains of a religious site set up in AD669 which in turn was built after a Roman fort was abandoned at the site in the mid 5th Century. The towers themselves were built in the 12th Century. In 1805 the church was partly demolished to use its stone and materials for a new church on higher ground at Hillborough. The towers were left behind and remain today.
Stour Valley, CT3 4BP The rare reed beds are the largest in the South East and attract bearded reedlings and bitterns. Bird lovers can also see swallows and sand martins, terns, grebes and kingfishers through the year. The wet grazing meadows and lagoons attract a wide variety of ducks, geese and other wildlife and you might even spot water voles, weasels or even an otter. There are bird hides and an observation mount and interpretation panels linked by footpaths through the reserve.

How to
By road
The Canterbury district has excellent road links with the M20 (M25/M26) and M2 motorways providing easy links to London and its airports. The A2 and A260 connect Canterbury with the port of Dover and the Eurotunnel terminal in Cheriton near Folkestone. Park and Ride
Canterbury Park and Ride is the greenest, cheapest and fastest way to get to the heart of the city and helps more than one million shoppers, commuters and visitors a year beat city centre congestion. The all day Park and Ride fee is £3 and customers can park in one of the 1,800 spaces available across the three sites at New Dover Road, Sturry Road and Wincheap. Each site is conveniently situated on the main routes into the city. Buses run approximately every eight minutes, Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 7.30pm. New Dover Road has a dedicated motorhome area with extra wide bays, large turning circle and extra facilities. Canterbury has two mainline railway stations, East and West and is served by frequent trains to and from London Charing Cross, London Victoria (approximately 90 minutes) and elsewhere in Kent. High Speed 1 provides a journey time from London’s St Pancras International to Canterbury West of approximately 56 minutes. Passengers getting off Eurostar at Ashford International will find that Canterbury is just a 20-minute rail journey.
