W EL C O M E TO C ARDIFF an attract ive city, a great venue.

T

hat’s Cardiff – a city on the move and rapidly becoming one of the UK’s top destinations for conventions, conferences, business meetings. The city’s success has been recognised by the British Meetings and Events Industry survey, which shows that Cardiff is now the seventh most popular UK conference destination.

Meanwhile, this guide will give you a flavour of what’s on offer in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Below is a translation of the above, only in Welsh. That’s one of the great things about Cardiff and Wales – we have our own language just like other countries. But there’s no need to worry, we speak English too. We also accept English (and Scottish) pounds!

We’ll help you find the right venue and we’ll take the hassle out of booking hotels – all free of charge. All you need to do is call or email us and one of our conference organisers will get things moving for you.

Time after time Cardiff delivers the goods for major events

C

ardiff is a bit like Doctor Who’s TARDIS – there’s more to it on the inside than you would ever guess from the outside.

That’s why the city handles major events so well. The list is impressive: the Rugby League World Cup in 2013; BSI Speedway Grand Prix since 2011; Six Nations Rugby Union, year after year; Ashes Test Cricket and Extreme Sailing in Cardiff Bay. An events list like this would test any city but with the stadium right in the heart of the city, a very short walk from the station and a well rehearsed park and ride system, Cardiff absorbs, entertains and then quickly releases up to 74,000 people safely back home or to a watering hole of their choice.

It’s not all sport. In 2013, WOMEX, the leading world music exhibition filled the Wales Millennium Centre, Motorpoint Arena and other venues for 60 concerts featuring 300 plus artists, a trade fair exhibiting in the region of 650 companies from over 90 countries, as well as more than 400 national and international journalists.

Friends of Cardiff The Cardiff Convention Bureau opened my eyes to the possibilities in terms of venues for our National Meeting. The Bureau opened doors to allow me to see special venues that I would not have been able to do on my own. Furthermore the Bureau helped to negotiate prices for hotels and the website link for booking accommodation was exceptionally helpful.

Why Choose Cardiff? A castle, museum, manor house, stadium, hotel or mansion. With so many different venues you’ll be spoilt for choice.

W

ales Millennium Centre and the Senedd building of the National Assembly for Wales are two familiar neighbours on the waterfront, overlooking the 200-hectare freshwater lake created by the £220 million barrage. Cardiff Bay is now one of Europe’s most sophisticated waterfronts – 13 miles of frontage to a fresh water lake created by the Cardiff Bay Barrage. The heritage is there from the coal port that brought Cardiff and South Wales their industrial might, but it has been transformed to become a stylish and bustling waterfront. Mermaid Quay offers shops, restaurants, bars and cafés which entice, amuse and entertain thousands of

visitors. Dine alfresco overlooking the water or people watch with a coffee amongst the hustle and bustle of the waterfront. Centrepiece in the Bay is the Wales Millennium Centre, a great monument of a building. It’s a village in itself, nurturing under its steel roof and slate walls all that is best in Welsh arts. The latest development is a £1.2 billion International Sports Village. Here an international standard swimming pool sits next to Cardiff International White Water, an Olympic standard venue for canoeing and rafting to offer a challenge for your team, plus an indoor surf machine. The popular BBC series Doctor Who is filmed in the area and Cardiff Bay was the fictional base of the spin-off Torchwood series. Just next door The Doctor Who Experience will take you on an interactive journey with the Doctor through time and space. M a k e yo u r e v e n t d i f f e r e n t Here are some ideas and suggestions on how to add value, excitement, history, skills, interaction, activity and of course some downtime for retail therapy to your event.

1. Welsh flavours Welsh lamb, laverbread, coq au vin or cockles? Dine around the world at Mermaid Quay or the Café Quarter – from Welsh food to international fare, there’s quality dining for every palate!

5. Think quirky Dinner in the tower? At Cardiff Castle you choose: formal fine dining in the banqueting hall, medieval banquets in the undercroft or intimate dinners in lavishly decorated tower suites.

2. Get out of the boardroom How about a breakout session at 30 kilometres an hour on the rapids? A great way to invigorate your delegates and clear away any cobwebs! And it’s right here in Cardiff.

6. Sporting achievements Let the Welsh National Anthem swell your pride as you walk from the tunnel onto the sacred turf on a tour of the 74,000-seat Millennium Stadium. Room for smaller groups, too!

3. Let us entertain you Need some entertainment for your event? Wales is the land of song and the musical talent in Cardiff is immense! Only Men Aloud and Only Boys Aloud can certainly put a note or two together!

7. Old meets new Step back in time to hold your meeting at St Fagans National History Museum (voted best attraction in the UK by Which?) Don’t worry, you still get all the mod cons.

4. Fancy a tipple? Penderyn single malt whisky is Welsh Gold, so rare, we ration it outside Wales! Sample (and buy) at the distillery and combine the visit with hill walking in the Brecon Beacons.

8. Shoppers’ paradise Cardiff and shopping – synonymous. Boutique, vintage, high end or high street? Shop in a Victorian arcade or six or take to St David’s Shopping centre – ranked 5th in the UK.

11

Why Choose Cardiff? Need help with subvention? Ask us. We may be able to assist your event financially and with contra deals with our partners.

9. Every penny counts Need help with your event? Sometimes we can help make your event happen with subvention. Ask us for more detail. 10. Out of this world Daleks, Cybermen and Slitheen may not be the ideal team members but they could provide an interesting backdrop for your meeting at the Doctor Who Experience. 11. Dab hand in the kitchen? Here’s a challenge for a team building activity with a difference: bake Welsh cakes at The Vale Resort as part of their ‘Coginio’ (that’s Cooking in Welsh!) course. Eat them afterwards!

Friends of Cardiff Your support with respect to appropriate venues, arranging site visits, handling the accommodation side of the conference, assisting with understanding contracts and sourcing kosher food has been invaluable and I personally wish to convey my thanks and gratitude. If in the future I organise another conference I will certainly be contacting you straight away. E x t e n d y o u r s tay 10 ways to discover C ardiff

1. Sportingly International Rugby, Test and One-day international cricket, Championship football (Fingers crossed for Premier League next year!), Speedway Grand Prix, Extreme Sailing, European club rugby and top class ice hockey all find their place in Cardiff. Join 74,000 for the emotionally charged Six-Nations rugby, enjoy the nuances of a five-day cricket test or look on from dry land as the multi-hulls slug it out in the Bay – a welcome reward for staff or a break in conference proceedings. 2. Artistically The finest collection of Impressionist works on display outside Paris and the very best of contemporary Welsh art are the highlights at the National Gallery of Wales in the National Museum, Cardiff. G39, Martin Tinney Gallery and Milkwood will give a contemporary take on the art scene. The city itself is an innovative architectural display, with pride of place going to William Burges, the Victorian eccentric who transformed Cardiff Castle and the city centre with his adventurous designs.

1

3

3. Environmentally Cardiff’s parks form a green lung from the outskirts, right into the heart of the city. It’s a city that welcomes cyclists – it’s flat, with dedicated cycle ways. It is also compact, which makes walking, cycling and public transport the best ways to get around. You are rarely more than 15 minutes from your next port of call in Cardiff and with an efficient, regular local bus service, getting around is easy, safe and clean. 4. Musically Welsh National Opera have their home at the Wales Millennium Centre, where they share the 1900-seat Donald Gordon Theatre with touring West End Musicals and visiting ballet and dance companies. Motorpoint Arena has the touring gigs, while the biggest acts will fill the Millennium Stadium. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales has its home at the Hoddinott Hall and St David’s Hall offers a mix of world class orchestras, singers, bands and comedy. 5. Theatrically The New Theatre has a year-round programme of drama from touring companies and a resident Christmas Panto. Sherman Cymru champions Welsh and Wales-based writers, with a particular brief to encourage the involvement of young people in the theatre and Chapter Arts Centre offers an eclectic mix of theatre and cinema. At the Wales Millennium Centre, the Weston Studio offers more of the avant-garde, with new productions from innovative writers.

6. Luxuriously In Cardiff, we have top quality hotels – four of them newly bearing Visit Wales Gold Awards for quality. With spas and health clubs in four-and five-star hotels, Cardiff is the perfect place to pamper yourself. Stay at the best hotels and make your visit something to remember, in the city centre, in Cardiff Bay or in the picturesque Vale of Glamorgan. 7. Economically Good quality three star hotels, B&Bs, guest houses and university accommodation give Cardiff the full range of options for event planners and conference delegates. It means visitors can always find somewhere affordable if the budget is tight. With university halls of residence close to the city centre, it can be very convenient to take advantage of a good affordable rate. 8. Historically The Romans built their fort on the River Taff almost 2,000 years ago. The Normans followed, building Cardiff Castle on the site. The Middle Ages and the Civil War battered the stones about until William Burges worked his wonders, creating a Victorian mock Gothic palace that stands to this day. 2,000 years of history, right in the centre of the city. Thoughtful of the Romans to choose a site so close to the shops! 9. Tastefully Cardiff has a growing reputation for its food and drink. One of the city’s favourite restaurants, the Potted

Top Tip

Pig, has impressed national judges, and Chapter Arts Centre and Milgi Lounge are highly recommended (Observer Food Monthly Awards) as places to go for a drink. There is a wide choice of restaurants throughout the city centre and in Cardiff Bay. Similarly, if your taste in pubs is traditional or modern, Cardiff can satisfy you.

For a trouble-free and successful convention, event or meeting, choose Cardiff. Our Convention Bureau will take care of everything for you.

10

10. Adventurously It’s all the thrills and challenges of rafting down the Zambezi – without the crocodiles and without the long trek home. Cardiff International White Water in Cardiff Bay leads the city’s adventure offering. Follow it with a stiff climb at Boulders, a treetop journey at Go Ape or quad bike at unbelievable angles at Taff Valley activity centre and you have a full set of adventure activities, all within a short run of the city centre.
