Game On GOLF IS JUST THE BEGINNING AT TETHEROW RESORT

Each year, Tetherow racks up a few more accolades, with publications across the country recognizing the resort as a top golfing and vacation destination right here in Bend. Only 7 minutes from Bend’s bustling downtown area and 20 minutes from the Mt. Bachelor ski resort, think of Tetherow as a home base for all things Central Oregon.

THE TURN | SUMMER 2021

Tetherow is a resort and a community that offers vacation lodging as well as permanent housing. Each of the vacation rentals come with up to five bedrooms, fire pits, hot tubs and private patios. Another option available to guests is the 50-room boutique hotel at the resort, offering modern amenities, including coffee from Nespresso, in every room.

Hit the course The crown jewel of Tetherow is their award-winning 18-hole golf course, designed by acclaimed architect David McLay Kidd—also the designer of Bandon Dunes on the Oregon coast and Castle Course in Scotland. The use of the naturally rolling terrain makes Tetherow a genuine Scottish links-style course, which is relatively uncommon in the United States. Every detail has been accounted for, down to the decision to use a fescue grass mixture that promotes fast and firm playing styles, as opposed to Bentgrass or Kentucky Bluegrass, which both work better with non links-style play.

THE TURN | SUMMER 2021

Work up an appetite After a day on the green, most people have two things on their mind: good food, and a drink to go with it. Luckily, Tetherow boasts three different restaurants for any and all occasions, as well as a snack cart between holes nine and ten, for any golfer looking for a quick bite. Solomon’s is Tetherow’s fine dining experience. Solomon’s features a rotating menu that highlights vibrant ingredients from the Pacific Northwest. It’s extensive wine collection will perfectly accent any meal. Reservations are encouraged as tables can fill up quickly. The Row is great for more casual, pub-style fare with flat screen TVs, delicious food and a vast tap list. This is a popular stop after any game of golf to grab a beer and a quick bite. The Café is located in the Tetherow Sport building and offers a fresh and convenient selection of made-to-order and grab-and-go options, available exclusively to hotel guests and Tetherow members only. Enjoy the entire menu poolside, as well.

THE TURN | SUMMER 2021

Swim and Train The pools at Tetherow are a refreshing resort experience. The outdoor pool is heated for comfort and is accompanied by hot tubs, cabanas, fire pits, The Café for poolside cocktails and cravings and plenty of space to relax, stretch out and unwind. The cabanas include comfortable seating options, power outlets for devices, privacy screens, heaters for cold nights and adjustable roofs, to ensure just the right amount of sun is shining down. The cabanas are available for rent for anything from private events to casual pool days.

Tetherow Sport is a state-of-the-art fitness facility equipped with everything needed to get a sweat on; modern cardio machines with access to Netflix and other streaming services, free weights and resistance training machines, a steam room, a sauna and access to tons of personal training options that can cater to the needs of any individual, no matter their fitness level or goals.

More to explore As a home base for all things Central Oregon, a trip to Tetherow wouldn’t be complete without checking out the amazing nearby natural landscape. In the summer, this includes hundreds of miles of world-class hiking and mountain biking trails, just waiting to be explored. An especially fun activity that only becomes available in the summer months is the Mt. Bachelor resort zipline, just up the road from Tetherow. The zipline drops guests a whopping 1,400 vertical feet, making it the Northwest’s highest elevation, steepest and fastest zipline. If the summer sun is a bit hot, consider getting down to Bend to float the Deschutes River or swim in one of the many available areas on the banks. To get to all of these great summer activities, Tetherow Resort offers shuttle rides for guests to get to and from downtown Bend, the Old Mill District and the base of Mt. Bachelor. Visit tetherow.com to learn about any special deals offered, and to keep up with the latest operating protocols.

PRO TIPS

SWING INTO THE SEASON

KEVIN ERDMAN IS THE DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION FOR THE SUNRIVER RESORT GOLF ACADEMY AND SERVES AS CO-DIRECTOR FOR NIKE JUNIOR GOLF CAMPS AT SUNRIVER.

When it comes to getting back into the swing of things after a long break, Erdman has some tips to help out.

During the pandemic, many people couldn’t practice their golf skills on a course, due to restrictions and shutdowns. Do you have any tips for staying sharp, even when you can’t actually golf?

Rust can form when any athlete neglects practice, so do you have any advice for golfers who feel rusty after a long break?

Stretching is something you can easily do at home, becoming more limber can really help your range of motion. There are many workout routines that can strengthen and stabilize your swing. Especially focus on your core. To improve your putting stroke, you can get a putting mat or use a fine carpet or rug to putt on.

Stretching will free up your body, loosen up tight unused muscles, tendons and ligaments. I like to practice my short game a bit more before I go onto the course after a long break. Your touch and feel normally take longer to get back after a break, so practicing your short game will help. Once you have had a few practice sessions on the range and a few rounds under your belt, then you can start setting goals and expectations.

When you step back onto the course after a long break, what do you do to prepare yourself for that first swing back?

What are some things that experienced golfers can expect, when they take a long break? How has their game changed?

I recommend going to the driving range at least once before teeing up on the course after a long layoff. Make sure you have stretched before your first swing, as the last thing you want to do is pull a muscle. Plus, stretching will help your swing. Don’t expect to do great, have fun and be thankful you’re back on the course.

Experienced golfers understand that practice is essential before they get back to the course after a long break. Most great golfers practice before every round of golf, so if you haven’t swung a club in six months, expect to practice a few times a day before going onto a course.

Q&A WITH

BRIAN HANSEN AT PRONGHORN RESORT

BRIAN AND KARA HANSEN LIVED IN SAN DIEGO FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS BEFORE MOVING TO CENTRAL OREGON. THEIR TWO-WEEK VACATION TO PRONGHORN ENDED UP LASTING OVER TWO MONTHS, AND THE COUPLE MOVED IN PERMANENTLY SHORTLY AFTER.

When did you first become a resort member at Pronghorn?

My wife and I came up for a long weekend of golf back in 2012 and immediately fell in love with the feel of the resort. We visited the real estate office and ultimately made an offer on a home in the estates before we left that weekend. Obviously the two amazing golf courses heavily influenced our decision, but the majestic clubhouse, the friendly staff and the smell of the junipers all contributed.

What’s your favorite golf course at the resort? I really prefer the Nicklaus course. It forces you to use every club in your bag and there are several risk/reward holes on the course that can really be a turning point in your round. My favorite hole is the 15th; an amazing par 5 that weaves through the lava fields to an elevated green with the snow capped cascades as a backdrop.

What is your favorite off-the-course activity to enjoy at Pronghorn? We enjoy endless mountain biking, hiking, world class fishing in the rivers and lakes, floating the Deschutes, and when the weather turns, heading up to Mount Bachelor to enjoy one of the best ski resorts in North America.

After you've finished a round of golf, where do you like to grab a bite to eat? During the summer when everyone is in town, getting together in the Ghost Tree Lounge after golf for a cold beer and the special of the night is magical. For me, the steak frites are just the right comfort food to top off the day.

What would your ideal day off look like, if the entire day had to be spent at Pronghorn? It would start at the Trailhead Grill for a little French toast and eggs. Then I would head over to the Fazio short game practice area to work on my 90-yard approach shots, followed by a quick range session before heading out to play 18 with a couple of groups of friends. From there, a quick dip in the pool and then back to the house to rest up a bit, only to repeat again tomorrow.

THE LAKESIDE BISTRO AT BLACK BUTTE RANCH

Black Butte Ranch is an iconic Central Oregon getaway destination. People travel from all over the country to enjoy the world class amenities, including two award-winning golf courses, a luxurious spa, spacious lodging and all the mountain biking and nearby skiing anyone could ask for. When it is finally time to grab a bite to eat and a drink to sip on after a day on the green, look no further than the Lakeside Bistro; an aptly named, sustainably built restaurant offering delicious Pacific Northwest fare, overlooking the banks of Lake Phalarope. In 2017, the Lakeside Bistro won an award from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. The structure is designed in a way that doesn’t require steel beams, and instead utilizes wooden supports. All of the wood was sustainably sourced, which is good news for Oregon’s forests and the rural communities that rely on lumber as a main industry.

The mornings at the Lakeside Bistro are inviting ones. Guests can take in the majestic Cascade Range while watching the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee and a handmade pastry. However, the Lakeside Bistro truly shines for lunch and dinner. The Bistro Cheeseburger is a popular choice among guests, both for it’s great taste and quality ingredients, as well as the burger’s price point, which starts at just $8. Add crispy onion rings and a beer, and then take a seat overlooking the water. Other tasty menu options including Korean beef tacos, salads, quinoa bowls and six different kinds of pizza. As the sun sets over the lake and the snow capped peaks fade to purple hues, raise a glass of beer or wine, all locally made, available from the bistro’s outdoor bar.
