Bontà Gelato - Bend
Bontà is a natural, artisan gelato company that has grown to such popularity in Bend that it can be found on dessert menus in some of the town’s top restaurants. Husband and wife duo Jeff and Juli Labhart spent a year traveling the world in search of new and exciting tastes. After training with traditional Italian gelato masters, the couple opened Bontà. Find flavors like Turkish coffee, dulce de leche & sea salt, and locally-sourced Tumalo lavender & honey, alongside classics like chocolate and vanilla, with many gluten-free options.
Ida’s Cupcake Café - Redmond and Bend
Many Central Oregon locals can recognize an Ida’s cupcake right away, and the treats are commonplace at events across the region, from weddings to birthdays. Ida’s claims the secret to success is the variety of homemade cake and buttercream frosting recipes, and the option for customers to combine any two flavors. They also offer many gluten-free options. Single orders and catering specials are available in person, for curbside pickup, and mail order.
Tastee Treet - Prineville
For authentic Americana and a real diner experience, look no further than Tastee Treet. Although the menu isn’t completely based around sweet treats, this all-American establishment offers old fashioned ice cream and milkshakes that are sure to leave a smile on anyone’s face. Experience a part of Central Oregon tradition that locals can’t get enough of.
Goody’s - Sunriver and Bend
Consider Goody’s your one stop shop for all things sweet. The local candy store boasts handmade chocolates and ice creams, inhouse popped caramel corn, candied apples, milkshakes and a vast selection of gummy candies. The chocolate is natural and additivefree, and uses beans from the Guittard Chocolate Company, while the ice cream is made in partnership with local dairy and berry producers, providing the freshest flavors around.

SPRING IN THE OLD MILL Bend’s Old Mill District is steeped in history; the mill that the district was built around is the original lumber mill that helped create the town as we know it today, situated on the Deschutes River to help transport logs with the currents. Now, the mill stands as a symbol of progress and evolving industry, as the modern district has shed its lumber past and is now known for its art, shopping, dining and adventure.

The Old Mill District is home to 20 public art installations, including many murals that add a splash of color to the surfaces they inhabit. Keep an eye out for the vibrant pieces from artist Yuya Negishi, including the staircase flower mural behind Ben & Jerry’s and The Dragon, along the Deschutes River behind Gap. Take the river walk to see more art along the walls in each tunnel. Look for the South Tunnel murals under Columbia Street, a collaborative project between Arts Central, a team of Nike designers from Portland and the Old Mill District. Everyone will find something they love in the Old Mill. Kids and parents will love Wild Child, a new toy store that opened over the winter, offering high quality and sustainable toys, clothes, books and games. All products are catered to children from infancy to the age of 12. Hello Sunshine is the quintessential Bend boutique. This shop is home to clothes, accessories, home décor and more, all made with a touch of Pacific Northwest style. The Ticket Mill is the perfect spot for Bend souvenirs like hoodies, hats, mugs and more. Life is good at the new tiki bar, Rapa Nui, where tropical drinks are served with fresh pressed fruit juice and an Asianinspired tapas menu awaits exploration. A local favorite place to sip, Va Piano offers views of the nearby river while serving up award-winning reds alongside delicious charcuterie boards. The Boxwood Kitchen is a comfort food favorite that is sure to please everyone. Their menu features burgers made with local beef, mac & cheese, fried chicken bits, and for dessert, a to-die-for chocolate mousse.

New experiences are waiting just around the corner at the mill. Free Spirit Yoga + Fitness + Play offers outdoor yoga and fitness classes along the river for the adults, while the kids get to play in their indoor ninja warrior obstacle course; it’s a win-win for the whole family. When the weather is warmer, check out Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe. Paddleboards, kayaks, canoes and more; if it floats, you can probably rent it from here. For more on-the-water fun, try a guided fly-fishing tour with Confluence Fly Shop. NEW WILDERNESS PERMITTING SYSTEM When are permits required?
Permits will be required for visits to the wilderness areas beginning May 28, with this year’s permit season ending Sept. 24.
How do I get a permit?
The simplest way to secure permits is to visit recreation.gov, or to call 1-877-444-6777. Be prepared with your name, entry date, group size (maximum of 12 people on one permit), entry trailhead and for overnight permits, the length of the trip.
When should I get a permit?
For trips planned in advance, a portion of all permit inventory is available as of April 6 , while the remaining inventory will be released seven days before a trip would start, on a rolling basis.

Now is a great time for summer day-hikers and backpackers planning to visit Central Oregon’s picturesque wilderness to get familiar with a new trail permitting system launching this year. The new system aims to cut back on overcrowding at popular trailheads, which will in turn lead to quieter, more peaceful wilderness enjoyment on these outings. The new Central Cascades Wilderness Permit system will help regulate use on 19 of the 79 trails within the Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington and Three Sisters wilderness areas—requiring day-use permits for hiking. Meanwhile all 79 trails will require overnight-use permits. The low-cost permits ($1 for day-use and $6 for overnight) are being implemented to ensure that the beautiful landscapes of Central Oregon, which are easily accessed by locals and visitors regionally and worldwide, are wellprotected into the future.
