Welcome to Suffolk.

Our county is situated on the east coast of England, bordered by 50 miles of glorious coastline and topped with breathtakingly beautiful open skies, it is filled with natural beauty and it’s the perfect holiday and short break destination. You may like the idea of a quiet ‘get away from it all holiday’ or one that’s full of adrenaline and adventure, we are sure Suffolk will not disappoint. Throughout you will discover quaint villages and medieval towns that for centuries have drawn in artists and writers with history and heritage nestled around every corner. Added to this you will be spoilt with plenty of fresh, local food in restaurants, cafes and pubs, and you’ll soon discover why it’s called the foodie county.

Between the coastal towns of Aldeburgh, Southwold and Lowestoft to the home of horseracing in Newmarket, there are some fabulous attractions to visit. Great days out in Suffolk mean you can do as much or as little as you want but most of all it is about having a good time and taking home treasured memories.

Over the last few years, Suffolk’s reputation as The Foodie County has grown from strength to strength.

ORFORD

Orford’s diminutive size is no reflection of the foodie punch this little fishing village packs. Its star attractions include Pump St Bakery with its selection of pastries and bread and Pinney’s of Orford. Pinney’s family-run smokehouse sells award-winning smoked fish, as well as locally grown oysters from nearby Butley Creek.

ALDEBURGH

This seaside town has a fine range of restaurants along the high street, serving local fish and other dishes. No visit to the town is complete without dropping in on The Aldeburgh Fish & Chip Shop, described as the best fish and chippy in the world. Then there are the fresh fish huts dotted along the beach, to take your pick from the day’s catch.

STOWMARKET

Here you will find the Food Museum, which tells the story of food production and farming in East Anglia. Just outside Stowmarket, is the village of Creeting St Mary, and home to Suffolk Farmhouse Cheeses. You can find their Suffolk Blue and Suffolk Gold in restaurants and delis across the county, but a visit to their farm to stock up is worth a trip.

SOUTHWOLD

You know you’re in Southwold when you can smell the malt-clouds billowing from the chimneys of the Adnams Sole Bay Brewery. Beer lovers won’t want to miss a tasting tour of this famous brewery, and gin lovers will be in heaven on a gin making course at the Adnams Copper House Distillery next door.

NEWMARKET

Newmarket is famous for its racing but also for its sausages. In Victorian times the town’s butchers developed their own sausage from the pigs kept by the stables to eat the scraps. They soon became sought after by royalty and it became a tradition to take home sausages after the races. The Newmarket Sausage Association’s members, Musk’s, Powters and Tennant’s each have their own secret recipe, and have won numerous prizes.

PEASENHALL

Emmett’s of Peasenhall is a Suffolk producer with a Royal Warrant who have been serving succulent smoked hams since 1820. Stop by to peruse the well-stocked shelves or have an Emmett’s Bacon sandwich in the onsite café.

BURY ST EDMUNDS

This historic town with its twiceweekly market is fast becoming known as the ‘foodie’ capital of Suffolk. It’s not just the restaurants such as The Angel Hotel and Maison Bleue that bring people flocking to the town, it’s the number of breweries that call it home. From squeezing inside The Nutshell, Britain’s smallest pub, or a tasting tour at the Greene King Brewery, the smell of brewing is in the air. Close by in the village of Tuddenham you’ll find Tuddenham Mill, or at Wyken Hall at Stanton, you can dine at the Leaping Hare with a glass of wine from grapes grown in the next door vineyard.

IPSWICH

Suffolk’s county town has a lot to offer visiting foodies and two must visit places are the Suffolk Food Hall on the banks of the River Orwell and Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park, where brilliant family days out are centred around the discovery of food and farming.

WOODBRIDGE

Not only is the riverside town of Woodbridge picturesque, but it also boasts a thriving foodie scene. Visit the Tide Mill Living Museum and watch flour being milled using a centuries-old technique, and even take a bag or two home yourself.

BUNGAY

St Peter’s Brewery, perhaps the prettiest brewery in the country, is set in picturesque buildings surrounded by a moat. Book a brewery tour and have a meal in the great hall while you’re there.

ORFORDNESS

Mysterious, wild, isolated… These are all words that could describe Orfordness. It was once a secretive military base but is now a National Nature Reserve. Many rumours still surround Orfordness’ strange past including tales of a covered-up Nazi landing, and an infamous UFO sighting. We recommend going to find out the truth for yourself on this most unusual of Suffolk beaches…

WALBERSWICK BEACH

Walberswick is a great starting point to explore the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a beautiful place throughout the year and a popular place for crabbing during the summer months.

COVEHITHE BEACH

Voted one of Britain’s best 40 beaches by The Telegraph, Covehithe is located just a few miles south of Lowestoft and is possibly the wildest and most beautiful of Suffolk beaches. Driftwood forms beautiful shapes protruding from the sand, while Covehithe’s unique church inside a church adds an element of the surreal to this Suffolk beach.

DUNWICH BEACH

Dunwich beach and the surrounding heath and woodland are one of the most precious Suffolk beaches, home to a plethora of rare plants and wildlife. Dunwich is also a fascinating place historically – look out to sea from the beach and you’re staring at the watery resting place of what was once a city larger than London!

With over 50 miles of coastline, an area of outstanding natural beauty, great seafood, and cosy pubs and restaurants, this area of Suffolk is a year round destination.

FELIXSTOWE

Felixstowe is full of exciting activities for the kids, mum and dad, even grandma and granddad! Windsurfing, golf (crazy and sane!), nature trails, and exploring a 16th century fort are just some of the things you can do in Felixstowe, and that’s before you even reach the beach!

THORPENESS BEACH

The quirky village of Thorpeness already has a lot to offer as a day trip destination, including the Peter Paninspired boating mere, mock Tudor buildings, a house floating above the clouds and an acclaimed golf course. The lovely shingle beach simply adds to the magic. Look out for the futuristic Dune House, created by renowned Norwegian architects Jarmund/ Vigsnæs and Living Architecture.

LOWESTOFT

Fun in the sun is the name of the game on Lowestoft’s Blue Flag beach. With wide golden sands, it’s the place to be if you’ve got a young family in tow.

ALDEBURGH

A quaint seaside town with possibly the best fish and chips in the UK. See the Scallop sculpture on the shingle beach as you walk towards Thorpeness.

SOUTHWOLD BEACH

Charming Southwold is an eternal favourite with Suffolk visitors and residents alike. Lined with pictureperfect beach huts and the odd beach café selling bacon sarnies, tea and ice cream, and just a stones throw from some fantastic shops, pubs and restaurants, Southwold beach is an undisputed classic. Don’t miss out on a visit to Southwold Pier while you’re there.

SUTTON HOO

This is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time, where you will find stories of kings, mysterious mounds and buried treasure.

OASIS CAMEL PARK

Meet the friendly camels and their animal relations. This is the only place in the UK where the whole family can see, touch and even ride the animals that have been brought up like pets.

EASTON FARM PARK

See the animals as you wander around the farm, hug a bunny and go on tractor ride.

Watch over Africa’s Great Plains and see zebras, rhinos, and giraffes at this conservation hub for some of Africa’s most vulnerable species of animal.

ORFORD CASTLE

This is one of England’s most complete and unusual keeps, and is remarkably intact. You can climb to the roof to see the magnificent views over this pretty town and seaward to Orford Ness.

HELMINGHAM HALL GARDENS

Stroll through the historic gardens of this 500-year-old Hall and discover the history of the family. Famed for its spectacular light shows in winter and plant sales and other events in the summer.

WOODBRIDGE TIDE MILL

The Tide Mill has been working on same site for over 800 years and is one of only a handful of mills still regularly producing flour.

MID SUFFOLK LIGHT RAILWAY

All aboard the Mid Suffolk Light Railway for a trip on a steam train through the Suffolk countryside. Look out for Santa Specials where you can you meet the big man himself.

ICKWORTH HOUSE AND GARDENS

Explore the magnificent Italianate Palace and stroll around the earliest Italianate gardens in the UK which includes a Mediterranean Temple Garden and a magical Victorian Stumpery, all within 1800 acres of parkland.

MELFORD HALL

This romantic turreted mansion features Regency, Georgian and Victorian interiors and collections of porcelain, naval artifacts. You will also see Beatrix Potter memorabilia, she was a cousin of the family, and regularly visited the house.

FRAMLINGHAM CASTLE

Framlingham Castle was once at the centre of a vast network of power and influence and it was behind these towering walls where Mary Tudor was proclaimed Queen of England.

BAWDSEY RADAR TRUST

The 1937 Transmitter Block is part of the first radar station in the world. The displays and exhibition tell the story of the women and men who developed radar, and then created a defensive radar Chain Home that protected Britain during the WW2.

SUFFOLK OWL SANCTUARY

The Suffolk Owl Sanctuary is a place to visit to watch, study or simply enjoy the company of Owls and other birds of prey. There are over 60 raptors at the Centre, all housed in spacious aviaries and flying free in narrated flying displays or demonstrations.

THE HOLLESLEY BAY COLONY STUD

For centuries the gentle giants of Suffolk, the Suffolk Punch Horses, have helped farm the land. See them close up and find out more about their breeding and the work they used to do.

AN ITINERARY

DAY 1

STAGE 1: The Brecks is a haven for wildlife, walkers, and cyclists, with a landscape as old as any you can find in the UK. Visit the ancient flint mines, walk among the pines of Thetford Forest, or if you’re feeling adventurous, swing through the trees at Go Ape.

STAGE 2: Your next destination is Tuddenham Mill, a boutique hotel inside a converted water mill with a critically acclaimed and awardwinning restaurant in the village of Tuddenham.

STAGE 3: Next, is a short drive to historic Bury St Edmunds. From the ancient Abbey of St Edmund, with its impressive gate to an observatory dome atop an Athenaeum, Bury St Edmunds has plenty of things to see and do, shopping and a range of places to eat and drink.

STAY THE NIGHT

After your first day in Suffolk stay at one of its most celebrated hotels, The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds. Guests have been welcomed here since it opened in the mid-1700s, even Charles Dickens stayed and purportedly had a favourite four-poster bed, that is still in use today!

DAY 2

STAGE 4: Lavenham is the next stop, whose appearance has changed little in 500 years. Explore the breathtakingly beautiful buildings of the Guildhall of Corpus Christi and the church of St Peter and St Paul. We recommend lunching at the 800-year-old Swan at Lavenham or one of the many other cafes, pubs or restaurants.

STAGE 5: From Lavenham, it’s a leisurely drive to East Bergholt along Suffolk’s back roads, detouring to Kersey, named among the 10 loveliest villages in England.

STAGE 6: Take a walk in Flatford. From East Bergholt, head to Flatford along the lanes and river path that Constable would have walked. From here you will see Flatford Mill and Willy Lott’s Cottage. These iconic buildings were captured by John Constable, the latter in his most famous painting, The Hay Wain (1821).

STAY THE NIGHT

As the sun sets on your second day, the magnificent Hintlesham Hall Hotel awaits. This 16th century country house has expansive gardens to explore, an award-winning restaurant, and, best of all, supremely comfortable rooms.

A focus on towns

Bury St Edmunds

PERFORMING ARTS

Bury St Edmunds has two major arts venues. Originally opened in 1819, Theatre Royal, is the only surviving example of a Regency theatre in the country. The second, the Apex, is by contrast a modern concert hall which is fast gaining a reputation for its superb acoustics, mix of music, comedy and dance on the programme.

SHOPPING

This vibrant town has a wide range of independent shops mixed with household names. There’s a twiceweekly market (Weds and Sats) and this year, throughout the town, there are several Christmas events taking place.

GUIDED WALKS AND TOURS

Ghost Walks take place every Friday evening from October to March. Both the famous Greene King Brewery and Theatre Royal, which are also located close to the town centre, offer tours.

ST EDMUNDSBURY CATHEDRAL AND ABBEY GARDENS

Originating in the 11th century, and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries, St Edmundsbury Cathedral was finally finished this millennium with the addition of a tower, new cloisters, and chapels. The close by Abbey Gardens, are a mix of formal floral displays and intimate garden ‘rooms’.

ICKWORTH HOUSE AND PARK

Just outside Bury St Edmunds, this lovely Italianate building has a distinctive rotunda and a lively past, with more than its fair share of scandal and intriguing residents. It is now owned by the National Trust with the east wing, a luxury hotel. There are acres of parkland and gardens to wander through.

ABBEYGATE CINEMA

This charming cinema offers visitors a different cinema experience with squishy and spacious seats. The films are a mix of arthouse, independent and mainstream with a friendly on-site cafe and restaurant.

Newmarket

HOME OF HORSE RACING

Newmarket is the home of horseracing and was once the sporting playground for royalty. It is now home to over 3000 horses and boasts two racecourses. Between racecourses they host two of the five British Classic Races plus countless race days and the July Festival, one of the most glamorous events in the racing calendar.

GO ON A TOUR

The best way to find out more about the history of the town and horse racing is to go on a Discover Newmarket tour. On the tour you will go behind the scenes of some of racing’s sacred and cultural institutions; the Jockey Club Rooms, Tattersalls – the world’s oldest auction house, trainers’ yards, The National Stud and the famed gallops.

NATIONAL HORSE RACING MUSEUM

Another of Newmarket’s top attractions is the National Horse Racing Museum and flagship home of the Retraining of Racehorses charity. This venue sits in the remains of King Charles II palace and offers a variety of exciting exhibitions throughout the year and is home to the fantastic on-site restaurant, The Tack Room.

Ipswich

Ipswich has a great cultural scene, cool waterfront bars, cosy pubs and a vibrant community of independent stores.

WELL PLACED

Just a one-hour train ride from London, Ipswich is the perfect place to stay and explore the rest of Suffolk where you can wander the shores of the Suffolk coast, explore the Shotley Peninsula or take a day trip to Bury St Edmunds or one of the charming Wool Towns.

MARITIME HISTORY

With over 1,000 years of maritime and agricultural history, Ipswich is full of historic sites to see and a plethora of myths, tales and stories to tell. Visit the grand Tudor house of Christchurch Mansion and the Wolsey Art Gallery and discover the UK’s most significant collection of Constable and Gainsborough paintings and drawings outside of London. Ipswich waterfront is being redeveloped and is now one of the go to places in the town with many independent bars, cafes and restaurants, along with the nearby ‘Saints’ shopping area, a collection of independent shops in the historic part of the town selling a range of individual and craft items.

CULTURE

Whether you’re into drama, musicals, dance, comedy, art or music; there’s always a something cultural to experience in Ipswich. The New Wolsey Theatre houses exciting drama and comedy from their in-house theatre company. This year’s Christmas Rock n’ Roll panto Goldilocks and the Three Bears is sure to be a hit with everyone that sees it. Meanwhile, the Regent Theatre is the venue of big-name comedians, singers and touring shows. Modern art and design exhibitions at Ipswich Art Gallery bring popular and contemporary exhibitions to the town.

WALK ON A BEACH

You won’t have to worry about the crowds and quite possibly may have the whole beach to yourself during the winter months. This makes them the perfect place for blowing away the cobwebs, stretching your legs and enjoying the exhilaration of just being out in the open with just nature all around you. Dog’s love Suffolk, and it’s where they love to stretch their legs too. Most of the beaches are dog-friendly, especially during the winter months, so your four-legged friend can also join in the fun.

It may be a little chilly but all you need to do is wrap up warm and you can enjoy all that Suffolk has to offer in the winter.

FESTIVE FUN IN SUFFOLK

Have a bit of ho ho ho! and festive fun at the many Christmas events taking place. The children will love a visit to Easton Farm Park on the Suffolk coast where they can meet Santa and go on a winter wonderland walk. Check out Bury St Edmunds festive markets and craft fairs (24-27 Nov), and go back in time and have a Dickensian Christmas Experience at Kentwell Hall! The pantomime season is strong throughout the county.

VISIT A COSY PUB WITH AN OPEN FIRE

There is nothing better than to sit and relax in a cosy pub alongside a roaring fire with a warming drink or a glass of one of the counties best beers. Meandering through the towns and villages you will come across many typically Suffolk pubs, many still with their thatched roofs.

TRY A NEW EXPERIENCE

Get the adrenaline pumping at Go Ape situated in the stunning Thetford Forest location. There are plenty of activities on offer for thrill seekers either on the high ropes through the trees or on the bike trails which range from gentle to extremely difficult! Explore 4x4 can be found on the Elveden Estate and have an exciting range of activities. Choose from clay pigeon shooing, 4×4 off road driving, skid pan control, to crossbows, archery, axe, knife and spear throwing, to name but a few. Head over towards the coast to High Lodge where you can try your hand at clay pigeon shooting, fishing, archery and rifle shooting.

HAVE SOME ‘ME TIME’ AT THE SPA

Suffolk has some unique and luxurious spa’s where you can truly relax and probably won’t want to leave. 1 SAILORS PATH

A lovely six-mile gentle walk that follows the meandering course of the River Alde, a beautiful estuary on the east coast. Seamen used to ply their trade along this part of the coast –legend has it that when their boats got stuck in the Snape Maltings mud at low tide, sailors had to abandon their crafts and head back to their Aldeburgh homes on foot.

2 LAVENHAM WOODLAND WALK

This 2.8 mile walk takes you around the Lavenham Woodland which is part of the old Lavenham to Long Melford Great Eastern Railway line. It starts at the Guildhall in the centre of the village, where you will have the opportunity to see the magnificent Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, a nod to how wealthy this wool town was in medieval times. You will then head out into the countryside before returning to the village.

3 ALTON WATER LAKE TRAILS

Close to Ipswich on the Shotley Peninsula, is Alton Water, a manmade lake. It is a haven for wildlife, walkers, cyclists, and generally all outdoor enthusiasts who love both land and water. The whole family will enjoy time exploring either the short route or the longer eight-mile trail. Dogs on leads are welcome too.

4 NOWTON PARK BURY ST EDMUNDS

On the outskirts of Bury St Edmunds is the 200-acre Nowton Park. Nestled into the Suffolk countryside, there are walks of varying lengths around the undulating parkland and arboretum with henges and various sculptures along the way. In spring the lime avenue, which was planted around 1880, is one of the finest examples in the UK and you will see a spectacular sight, as over 100,000 daffodils bloom under the trees.

5 THE NEWMARKET RIDES – MOULTON CIRCUIT

The Newmarket Rides are as the name suggests close to Newmarket, the home of horse racing. As you walk the eight-mile route you will come across moated farmsteads, medieval churches and mills, the remains of a motte and bailey, a malt kiln, and a packhorse bridge. You may find cyclists and horse riders too as the network is quite extensive, making it easy to create a much longer route if you wish.

YESTERDAY

This comedy feel-good film was filmed throughout the Suffolk Coast and Norfolk with scenes in Halesworth High Street and the Ramsholt Arms Pub in Ramsholt. Other stars in the film were Shingle Street and Suffolk’s Latitude Festival.

PRIVATE PEACEFUL

Suffolk doubled up as Devon for Michael Morpurgo’s affecting tale of Devon farm boys being called to fight on the Western Front during the WWI. Christchurch Mansion, in the centre of Ipswich, was used for some of the scenes.

THE PERSONAL LIFE OF DAVID COPPERFIELD

The Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds was transformed for filming this Charles Dickens adaptation. Other locations in the town included Chequers Square opposite St Edmunds Cathedral, and inside the Theatre Royal, which is the location bookending the film.

WIND IN THE WILLOWS

Kentwell Hall in Long Melford plays Toad Hall in the updating of this wonderful children’s classic.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS

Chocolate-box Lavenham played its party in the blockbuster movie, The Deathly Hallows Part 1 & Part 2, as Godric’s Hollow, the magical village where Harry Potter was born.

THE CROWN

In 2019, The Crown, has a scene filmed at Newmarket racecourse. This lavish, Netflix-original drama chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth II and shows her love of horses and racing.

THE DETECTORISTS

Much of the filming for the series about two passionate metal detectorists took place in and around the market town of Framlingham on the Suffolk coast, with its picturesque Framlingham Castle.

DOG-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION

There’s a huge range of dog-friendly accommodation in Suffolk, from luxurious hotels to cosy cottages and campsites. Many places where you can stay with your dog provide beds, bowls and tasty treats. Although they are not allowed in all restaurants and pubs, many love to welcome our furry friends.

DOG FRIENDLY PUBS

No great dog walk is complete without a cosy pub and a crackling fire at the end of it. Thankfully, Suffolk is full of dog-friendly pubs, where your dog can dry off from a swim in the sea or river and you can relax with a glass of something brewed here in the county.

PLACES TO PADDLE

With rivers, lakes and 50 miles of heritage coastline, Suffolk is heaven for dogs that love to swim. From October to April, most of Suffolk’s beaches are open without restrictions to dogs, so you and your pup can go from beach to beach and play in the surf. Suffolk’s waterways are perfect for wild swimming for both you and your dog. The River Waveney at Outney Common, the River Ouse at Santon Downham and Knettishall Heath, and the River Stour at Flatford are all great places to take a dip, just check the strength of the current beforehand to make sure it is safe for you both.

WOODLANDS

Suffolk’s forests and vales are wonderful for long dog walks. From Brandon and Elveden you can explore the Brecks, a mesmerizing landscape of twisted pines. A great place to start your walk is at Brandon Country Park, with five trails taking you through different landscapes.

Near the coast is Rendlesham Forest, the site of the mysterious UFO sightings. The circular trails take you through forest and heathland and here you will discover the story of the happenings one night in December 1980, an event now known worldwide as “The Rendlesham Forest Incident.” Dedham Vale, is affectionately known as Constable Country, as this idyllic rural landscape was the inspiration for many of Constable’s most famous paintings. Today you can walk through the Stour valley from Flatford to Sudbury, taking in the picturesque views.

Just one hour from London by train, Suffolk is perfect for that short break getaway! Here are just a few of the places in Suffolk you can reach by train.

WOODBRIDGE

Nestled on the River Deben, is Woodbridge a lively riverside town. FELIXSTOWE

This traditional seaside town is a year-round destination where the long promenade enables you to stroll along the beach whatever the weather. As well as the seaside arcades, you will find plenty of cosy cafes and restaurants nestled along the waterfront and throughout the town.

IPSWICH

The town is an urban sprawl of cultural splendour. From visiting exhibitions, fixtures at DanceEast, New Wolsey Theatre, the Regent and Red Rose Chain – there is plenty to entertain you. Christchurch Mansion is a must-visit with the largest collection of Constable masterpieces outside of London. It’s the waterfront which draws much attention with its impressive yachts, cool cafés and renowned eateries and a stay at the Salthouse Harbour Hotel, ideally located to unwind and watch the world go by.
