Our History
Edmond has a robust history dating back to 1887. What began as a crucial stop along the railway, the Summit Train Station later turned into a township during the April 22, 1889, Land Run.
Early Edmond was a pioneer town that relied on agriculture, the flour mill and the railroad. When Route 66 came through Edmond in the mid-1920s, new opportunities opened up to provide food, gas, auto repair and overnight stays to our travelers.
Education was foundational from the beginning.
Edmond is home to the first public school in Oklahoma Territory, a one-room school, called the 1889 Territorial Schoolhouse. Edmond is also home to the first public institution of higher education in Oklahoma Territory. The Territorial Normal school, which started as a teaching college, is now the University of Central Oklahoma. Both historic sites are located on Route 66.
Like many towns across Oklahoma, the 1930s Great Depression and Dust Bowl took a toll, although the flour mill remained vital to Edmond’s economy.
Oil booms across Oklahoma provided relief and The West Edmond Oil Field, produced 7.75 million barrels of oil in the 1940s during the peak of World War II. The oil field history is commemorated with a bronze statue by Jim Franklin as part of our city’s public art collection at Mitch Park.
The preservation of Edmond history is visible across our city through public art and historic buildings on the U.S. National Register of Historic Sites. Stephenson Park, near downtown Edmond, offers excellent examples of how Victorian and Works Progress Administration (WPA) architecture can complement a modern community space.
