Exeter is one of the most vibrant, attractive and historically interesting cities in England. Pre-dating the arrival of the Romans in AD 50, Exeter’s history is rich and long. This is reflected in its fascinating visitor attractions including its mysterious Underground Passages, Red Coat Guided Tours, magnificent Cathedral, imposing Roman wall and beautiful Quayside. Exeter is also home to the award-winning Royal Albert Memorial Museum where visitors can explore the city’s 2,000-year history under one roof! Exeter has a great mix of shops. The city’s sense of individuality is reflected in its large range of independent specialist shops and boutiques offering unique one-of-a-kind items. Exeter even has its own local currency, the Exeter Pound, which can be spent at numerous shops and eateries across the city. Exeter is firmly on the map as one of the foodie capitals of the South West. The city’s location in the Heart of Devon makes it a melting pot for top chefs to create gastronomic delights with ingredients harvested from the surrounding coast and countryside. From farmers’ markets selling field-fresh produce to cosy cafés and award-winning restaurants, the city’s taste sensation is celebrated every spring at the Exeter Festival of South West Food & Drink. Here in Exeter you’ll find a cultural scene that’s as varied and exciting as the city itself. Whether you’re a theatre lover, music buff, foodie or

Exeter’s Quayside The city’s wealth from the woollen cloth trade, which reached its peak in the mid-18th century, is evident in the historic buildings found here. Now home to an eclectic mix of retailers, selling everything from antiques, home furnishings and beautifully crafted jewellery, to unusual gifts and local crafts, the Quayside also boasts some fantastic cafés, restaurants and bars, all enjoying a riverside setting. The Quayside is a hub of activity, from well-signposted walking and cycling trails to the south west’s largest multimillion pound outdoor education centre and climbing wall! Exciting events are held on the Quayside all year round; including a monthly evening street food night market. During 2017, the Quayside will undergo some essential flood elevation works, but despite some disruption, will remain open for business as usual. Transit Shed

Chosen as a Host City for Rugby World Cup 2015, it’s no wonder that Exeter is growing in reputation as an exciting place for sport and leisure. As well as rugby, there are also regular football and horseracing fixtures to enjoy at St James’ Park and Exeter Racecourse. The city’s Quayside is a hub for sporting activities of all kinds. Home to the South West’s largest indoor climbing wall and multi million pound outdoor education centre, there’s a great choice of activities on offer both on and off the water. In Exeter we’re big on bikes, and there are numerous cycle routes to choose from including the Exe Estuary Trail linking the city to the sea. 35

Cruises Exeter is a city on the water, and what better way to relax than taking a boat trip on the calm waters of the Exeter Ship Canal and River Exe. Services run from Exeter’s Quayside to the Double Locks and Turf pubs, and from nearby Topsham to the Lock Keeper’s Cottage Café in summer. In winter, the Exe Estuary is an internationally important site for winter migrant birds. Seasonal bird watching cruises operate throughout the winter from heated vessels with expert commentary from leading ornithologists.
