Mechelen
Authentic and full of surprises. That’s Mechelen. Hospitable and honourable. That’s the people of Mechelen. Come and experience the city’s urban charms for yourself.
Mechelen lies at the heart of Flanders, halfway between Antwerp and Brussels, at barely 11 minutes by train from Brussels Airport. The city is easily accessible to visitors from home and abroad, either by road, rail or air.

An 11-minute train ride from the airport In 1835, Mechelen became the first rail destination on the European continent; today, it’s the quickest rail destination from Brussels Airport!
With the inauguration of an ultra-fast rail link, travel times from Brussels Airport to Mechelen has been cut to just 11 minutes!
Mechelen, low-traffic city Mechelen in no time Arriving at Brussels Airport by plane? If you take the train you’ll be in Mechelen in just eleven minutes! By bus it takes three-quarters of an hour. From Charleroi Airport to Mechelen by train takes one-and-a-half hours and by bus two hours. With the shuttle service from Eindhoven airport you’ll be in Mechelen in two hours. For further information about how to reach Mechelen from these airports, go to www.tourismmechelen.be.
Mechelen’s attractive centre makes for pleasant living, working, strolling and shopping. In the historical heart of the city, pedestrians and cyclists reign supreme. If you’re visiting by car, then follow the signposts along the ring road and approach routes for easy access to the various parking facilities. The peripheral car parks are located at walking distance from the historical sights. Information signs provide descriptions of various thematic itineraries that will take you from your parking location along some of the city’s monuments to the low-traffic city centre.
The sense of quiet airiness on the skywalk is second to none: it’s like floating freely through the sky, high above the city.
The people of Mechelen take pride in their city’s more than 300 listed monuments, four of which are inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
Pride in past and present Atop St Rumbold’s Tower Rik Wouters Despite his tragically short life and career, Mechelen-born painter and sculptor Rik Wouters left behind a towering body of work. Highlights from his oeuvre can be admired in a major exhibition at Schepenhuis Museum. It features masterpieces in the collection of the Municipal Museums of Mechelen alongside longer-term loans from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp, which holds the world’s largest Wouters collection.
Mechelen’s most iconic landmark is the imposing St Rumbold’s Tower. A stroll around the skywalk atop the tower is the ideal way to begin your visit to the city: it offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Mechelen and far beyond. On a clear day, the view stretches from the Atomium in Brussels in the south to the port of Antwerp in the north. The actual ascent of the tower is an equally unforgettable experience: uniquely, the tower houses not one but two carillons as well as a splendid clockwork mechanism, which are maintained by the tower guard. Should you bump into him, feel free to quiz him about how they work.
Old and new In addition to its historical heritage, Mechelen also offers some wonderful examples of contemporary urban design: brand-new housing developments, exquisite renovations and other recent architectural gems are a testimony to the city’s vitality. The most recent jewel in Mechelen’s architectural crown is the conversion of the Kazerne Dossin by bOb Van Reeth. Haverwerf is a great place to start your Sunday morning exploration of the sights and sounds of the city.
Eight historical churches The city centre boasts no fewer than eight historical churches, each of which holds treasures of ecclesiastical art. The coloured light that falls through the stained-glass windows and the serene atmosphere that pervades these monuments make for a unique visiting experience. Here you can admire precious paintings by famous old masters such as Rubens and Van Dijck. St John’s Church has some exceptional 14th-century murals predating the Early Netherlandish school of painting.
Gourmets should be sure to try the Brouwerskaas (Brewer’s Cheese) with Gouden Carolus Tripel!
De Wit A visit to the Royal Tapestry Manufacturers De Wit is a must for any visitor. De Wit represents four generations of excellence in the cleaning and conservation of ancient tapestries, areas in which it enjoys worldwide fame. On Saturday mornings, the company opens its doors to the public. Tours include a visit to the workshop and a weaving demonstration!
Carolus route Why not cycle the Carolus Route, starting and ending at Het Anker brewery! The route takes you through the verdant Zennegat, Het Broek and Vrijbroek Park. Along the way are a number of cafés where you’ll find that a Gouden Carolus ale is just the thing to quench your thirst!
If you have a sweet tooth, try the so-called Maneblussertjes, delicious crescentshaped biscuits or filled chocolates. Or push your taste buds to a new level and go for an asparagus praline!
Acquaint yourself with Mechelen’s treasure trove of unique traditions, rare crafts and unsurpassed workmanship. And enjoy its local culinary delicacies, of course, for Mechelen is an epicurean’s delight.
Tradition & Talent Het Anker brewery
Every year, on 24 February, Het Anker produces the Cuvée van de Keizer, an exceptionally tasty birthday brew, in commemoration of Charles V. Cheers!
On the edge of the beguinage, you can visit the authentic brewery Het Anker (‘the anchor’), which produces the famous Gouden Carolus. This special brew, which already titillated the taste buds of Charles V back in the 16th century, won a gold medal at the 2010 and 2012 World Beer Awards.
Be sure to visit the fourth floor of the museum. The outdoor terrace affords a breathtaking view of the whole city as well as the old barracks.
The human rights theme is not randomly chosen, but deeply ingrained in the history of Mechelen. Kazerne Dossin has been redesignated as a Memorial, Museum and Documentation Centre on Holocaust and Human Rights, a unique project in Europe. A human-rights-themed tour of Mechelen explores some of these issues further.
From Injustice to Human Rights Kazerne Dossin Between 1942 and 1944, the Dossin casern was transformed by the Nazis into SS Sammellager Mecheln. Under this name, it served as a transit camp from where over 25,000 Jews and Roma were deported by train to Auschwitz-Birkenau. In December 2012, the site reopened as Kazerne Dossin. Memorial, Museum and
Documentation Centre on Holocaust and Human Rights. The centre intends to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust and it gives a face to 19,000 of the deported. Their tragic story is placed in a broader human rights perspective with an underlying motif of hope.
When you’re at Kazerne Dossin, do pay a visit to the Memorial in the old barracks opposite the new museum. It is a worthy place of commemoration for those who died and a vital reminder for the future.
Human Rights Walk The Mechelen Human Rights Walk is an opportunity to explore some of Mechelen’s less obvious places of interest and its lesser-known heritage. It will take you to locations which played a role in Mechelen’s human rights history or lent colour to the city’s humanistic past. It also looks
at the present. In a city that thrives on diversity this walk sheds light on social themes and commitment
In our compact shopping quarter you’ll find international brands alongside small shops that house generations of tradition.
Mechelen suits you Delightful specialist shops, trendy stores and convivial terraces, cafés and restaurants give Mechelen’s streetscape its colour and vibrancy. Stroll through the historic centre where traffic is restricted and where history is given a new lease of life in beautifully renovated shops. It may surprise you to find that Mechelen is a shopper’s paradise and one that suits you too!
Palaces of the Margarets Several women of historical distinction have stamped their mark on the city of Mechelen – and none more so than the Duchesses Margaret of York and Margaret of Austria. The latter used to reside in the impressive Court of Savoy, the first Renaissance building in the Low Countries. Its beautiful inner courtyard is a peaceful oasis in the city centre.
Known affectionately as ‘Our Margaret’, the statue looking out over the town’s central market square or ‘Grote Markt’ represents Margaret of Austria, a proud lady of distinction!
Curious about the feminine side of Mechelen? Once you may have found it in the residences of Margaret of York and Margaret of Austria. Today, it resides in the more humble abodes of women with unusual occupations or eccentric hobbies, or women with a special story to tell.
City in female hands Beguinage The quaint residential neighbourhood of the Beguinage was once home to other ladies of historical significance: the beguines were a community of women who led lives of religious devotion without taking formal vows. Wonder through the maze of diminutive streets and enjoy the sense of tranquillity of this must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ursuline Institute and winter garden The trail of enterprising ladies also leads to the Ursuline Institute at Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Waver. Established by the Ursulines as a boarding school for girls, it now houses a mixed secondary school and convent. The complex is world-renowned for its unique combination of architectural styles. The absolute highlight is the wonderful dome of the winter garden: an exquisite example of Art Nouveau design!
The Rose Garden is at its blooming best in the month of June. Indulge your taste buds with some roseflavoured ice cream or jenever during the annual Rozenfeesten or ‘rose festival’.
If you like the idea of a charming mediaeval town in a setting of water and greenery, then Mechelen is your ideal travel destination. Enjoy a stroll through the parks and scenic areas in and around the city. Explore a landscape of rivers, ponds and canals by bicycle. And end your day in one of the city’s many restaurants and cafés. Mechelen is a great city for out-of-doors fun!
Out and About a walk along the water Give in to the seductive charm of Mechelen’s waterfronts or go for a stroll along the floating footpath on the river Dyle. The Melaan, one of the canals or ‘vlieten’ that traverse the heart of the city, is also a sight to see. The floating footpath on the Dyle is lit up at night, when the river’s enchanting beauty is at its most poignant.
cycling
The Rupel, Nete and Dyle meet at the Point of the Three Rivers – the ‘Drie Rivierenpunt’ –, which should be part of every cycling excursion.
Mechelen is a truly cyclist-friendly city. In the centre, where traffic is restricted, you can cycle past historic buildings, across squares and alongside watercourses. Outside the city, the extensive network of cycle paths, many running along traffic-free dykes, affords scores of kilometres of cycling pleasure. The brandnew cycling booklet centred around Mechelen contains not only practical cycling information and interesting tips, but also six suggested cycling circuits. It’s available from Tourism Mechelen.
Vismarkt or ‘fish market’ is a trendy hotspot on the Dyle. In addition to some of the town’s best fishmongers, it houses various scenic bars and pavement cafés. This is the place to be for locals and visitors alike. Soak up the atmosphere and join in the fun!
contour Contour 2013, the sixth Biennial of the Moving Image, is all about contemporary art at international level. This year the theme is ‘Leisure, Discipline and Punishment’. The artworks will be shown in places normally visited for pleasure, for religious reasons or out of necessity or even under duress. Danish curator Jacob Fabricius will ensure that each work is shown to its best advantage.
Mechelen lives and breathes contemporary visual art and regularly mounts innovative and imaginative, international art exhibitions. In 2013 film, video and installations will again occupy a special place in our city of art.

HANSWIJK CAVALCADE Hanswijk cavalcade The Hanswijk Procession has made its way through the city every year since 1273. In 2013 we have the ‘Hanswijk Cavalcade’ to look forward to, which only takes place once every 25 years. Hundreds of volunteers dressed in authentic costumes act out historical and religious scenes. The scores of horses help make the Hanswijk Cavalcade an unforgettable spectacle. This year the Hanswijk Cavalcade will file through the streets of Mechelen city centre on Sunday August 25th and Sunday September 1st. Make a note of these dates in your diary now!
This is something you will only be able to experience three times in a lifetime!
Mechelen giants Traditionally the Hanswijk Cavalcade is rounded off with the ‘Ommegang’ procession which features a group of figures that includes the Mechelen family of giants and the folkloric Ros Beiaard and Opsinjoorke. The family of giants is on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Not to be missed!
