SUMMER 2023 GUIDE

Explore the Outdoors

Soak up the sun with an outdoor adventure in Franklin! Enjoy and explore the natural beauty of Tennessee with some of our favorite activities.

Farm Experiences

Outdoor adventures await at Southall Farm & Inn, Franklin’s latest all-in-one nature destination. Whether you prefer to venture out on your own or be led by a guide, Southall offers a full calendar of activities ranging from beekeeping lessons to an aerial ropes course among the trees.

Learn about sustainable farming practices in Southall’s apiary, orchard, or garden. Taste awardwinning honey straight from the hive and meet the beekeepers, or get a lay of the land with an orchard or field tour and tasting. You can even try your hand at gardening with a guided class!

Fuel your sense of adventure with Southall’s unique outdoor courses and activities. Head to Nick’s Outfitters on the shores of Lake Mishkin for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and more. If you’re looking to try something new or expand your skills, reserve a lesson in fly fishing, axe throwing, or archery. For an unforgettable experience, take a guided mountain bike or hiking tour, then meet a bird of prey during a falconry expedition.

On the Water

The scenic Harpeth River flows straight through the heart of downtown Franklin, and you can find access points throughout the city where you can launch a canoe or kayak, go fishing, or take a swim. For the ultimate fly fishing experience, book a guided boat tour with Franklin Fly Fishing Co. If kayaking or canoeing is more your speed, Cumberland Kayak offers 1-2 hour rentals and a shuttle service to a river access point.

Head over to the boat house by the shimmering waters of Westhaven Lake where you’ll find Paddle Dog, a one-stop-shop for delicious hot dogs and paddleboard rentals. Grab a board and an oar to float across the lake, then order a hot dog to enjoy while hanging out by the water.

Hit the Trails

Lace up your boots and get ready to hike some of the most beautiful trails in Tennessee! Follow the Natchez Trace Parkway to Timberland Park, which features more than 3 miles of secluded trails through lush forests and meadows. Drive a little further down the Trace to milepost 427.6 to hike the 1.3-mile long Garrison Creek Loop trail, suitable for all skill levels.

Travel just beyond Franklin to Thompson’s Station and take a hike through history at Preservation Park, a Civil War battlefield-turned-trail that leads to a grassy hill with unbeatable scenic views. In Brentwood, purchase a day pass or join a guided hike at Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary, a wildlife conservation center and idyllic hiking spot.

Pedal your way through Franklin on an electric bike from Pedego, or check out one of their guided tours! For mountain biking, gear up and head out to Wilkins Branch Mountain Bike Park, a spot featuring a variety of trails for different skill levels.

Fun with the Fam

Spend summer break making memories with the whole family at one-of-a-kind spots you’ll only find in Franklin! Strap in and climb your way up four levels of challenging yet fun obstacles at SOAR Adventure Tower, or stay on the ground for a round of mini golf.

If you’re in town on a Saturday, pick up fresh produce or food truck fare at the Franklin Farmers Market at The Factory, then walk across the street to The Park at Harlinsdale Farm for a family picnic.

Get outdoors and explore all Franklin has to offer with a free digital passport! Cool off with a frozen treat from an ice cream shop on the Sweet Treats Trail, then solve clues leading to Franklin’s landmarks on the Midnight Sun Scavenger Hunt. For picture-perfect family photos, sign up for the Murals of Williamson County passport to pose in front of vibrant works of art. Be sure to tag @visitfranklintn on Instagram!

Off the Beaten Path: Hidden Gems to Explore

This summer, explore every community in Williamson County and experience some of the lesser-known spots on your adventures! Use our round-up as a starting point to plan your trip, and know that there are many more local gems waiting for you to discover this list is just the beginning!

Franklin

Amendment XVIII Cocktail Club is a mixologist’s dream, serving craft cocktails that arguably rival the scene in many larger cities in a swanky setting. Beat the heat with a game of axe throwing at Sticks & Stones Axe Co. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned pro, their friendly staff will help you hit the bullseye. With Sweethaven’s two locations in Franklin, the sprinkle-topped, soft serve treats are a summer must-try!

Spring Hill

Nelly’s Italian Café is a can’t-miss spot in Spring Hill. Neighbors love this eatery, so prepare for a short but worthwhile wait to enjoy authentic New York-style pizza and Italian staples like calzones, cannolis, and more. Visit nearby Hidden Seed Plant Shop for a dream plant selection and its sister business Beach Co. Chill for Hawaiian-style shave ice that will cool you down in no time.

Brentwood

Surprising and stunning nature escapes can be found in bustling Brentwood. Visit Owl’s Nature Sanctuary and Deerwood Arboretum & Nature Center for outdoor adventures, including guided hikes and educational opportunities. Just up the road is Dyer Observatory, Vanderbilt University’s astronomical observatory that’s open to the public for special events. When you’re hungry, be sure to visit Puffy Muffin, a beloved local institution, for a specialty pastry, scratch-made dessert, or grab-and-go boxed lunch.

Thompson’s Station

Gather around to sample award-winning whiskey and gin and play a round of cornhole at Company Distilling, tucked along the train track that runs through the town. Then pop over next door to local favorite Circa Grill for Southern-American fare (and brunch if you’re lucky enough to be visiting on a weekend!). Enjoy beautiful 360-degree, hilltop views at neighboring Preservation Park and learn about the Civil War history that unfolded there.

Arrington

Hatcher Family Dairy is one of Tennessee’s most famous farms (they were recently featured in a Discovery+ series!); a scenic drive out to Arrington to see the property and pick up some chocolate milk at the farm stand is well worth it. Stop by Mercantile 1858’s original outpost to shop vintage, new, and handmade home decor and gifts, and grab a snack at Sip-n-Scoop, a charming country grocery store.

Fairview

Just west of Franklin lies Fairview, home to the 700-acre Bowie Nature Park, a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding, and more. While you’re in this neck of the woods, snap a photo at the Fairview mural, one of the stops on the free Murals of Williamson County digital passport (check in at five or more locations for a prize!). Shop curated home goods, furniture, and gift items at Farm Fresh Vintage Finds and even grab some ice cream there!

Nolensville

Oh My Chives is a surprising strip mall find along the historic 31A Trail in Nolensville. The natural market with locally sourced farm goods also offers incredible homemade sandwiches and other healthy fare, plus counters featuring Cornell Brothers Coffee and Lokales Juice if you’re looking for a refresher! Just up the road, browse Nolensville Book Nook for a curated selection of children’s books, and satisfy your sweet tooth with Itty Bitty Donuts & Specialty Coffee.

Leiper’s Fork

Quite literally off the beaten path on a gravel road, family-owned Noble Springs Dairy offers weekend farm tours and baby goat cuddling, as well as a delicious array of goat cheeses. Mosey down the road to sift through treasures at the charming Props Antiques, then grab a pick-me-up at The RedByrd Coffee Shop, a tiny home-turned-coffee stand with outdoor seating.

Shop for gifts for everyone on your list, souvenirs for yourself, and a little something for your pet. You can even find a pair of socks or a set of pajamas with a print that represents your dog’s breed!

BETTER CITIES FOR PETS

Did you know that Franklin is an official partner of the Mars Petcare Better Cities for Pets™ campaign? This means that special efforts have been made throughout the community to make Franklin a pet-friendly place, from water bowls and waste bag stations lining the sidewalks to window decals showing which businesses allow pets inside.
