LITTLE MALOP STREET PRECINCT
This city by the bay is perfect to explore by foot. Little Malop Street is a high-energy pedestrian precinct with bars, great coffee, street art and restaurants which each put a special spin on cuisines from around the world. The fun spills onto the street and wends its way down secret alleyways, where you’ll make surprise finds such as highend French fare and a speakeasy bar. Enjoy live music, catch a show at the glittering new arts centre or muse over an art exhibition in this UNESCO City of Design.
THE WATERFRONT
Geelong’s waterfront is a sparkling bay sprinkled with yachts, and the grassy foreshore is lined with palm trees as well as cafés and restaurants offering water views. Admire the historic carousel and the artfully painted bollards, each playfully representing a character from Geelong’s history. Wander through the Botanic Gardens and along Cunningham Pier and Eastern Beach where you can take a dip in art deco sea baths. Elevate your experience by enjoying a cocktail at a rooftop bar, riding the Giant Sky Wheel or taking a spin in a helicopter.
DON’T MISS:
Pako Festa was crowned Victoria’s best regional event in 2024, drawing more than 100,000 visitors for multicultural food, a street parade, and fun! 22 Feb 2025
PAKO
To the west, trendy Pakington Street has outstanding restaurants, bars, retail and art. Cosmopolitan at the northern end and a bit fancier further south, the vibrant eateries serve-up everything from Asian-fusion to top cuts of steak and hearty Italian faves.
“Pako”, as it’s locally known, finishes at the Barwon River where 20km of leafy paths and further dining experiences await. Across the river is the thriving hub of Belmont where you’ll find coffee, shops, a tap room and a wine bar.
FEDERAL MILLS PRECINCT
Federal Mills in North Geelong is a grand old woollen mill which has been impeccably transformed into a foodie and history-lover’s dream. The original industrial features of the red brick buildings have been restored and now house a bakery, gin distillery, vintage market and collectables gallery. Come for a Crème Brûlée donut, sip on an artisanal gin, then feast on Mediterranean fare.
FYANSFORD PAPER MILL PRECINCT
What started in 1878 as a paper mill overlooking Buckley Falls is now an impossibly beautiful archipelago of stone buildings housing a James Halliday 5-star winery, shops and artist studios. It’s hard to believe this piece of picturesque countryside is only minutes from the city. Book a tour to learn more about the oldest remaining paper mill in Australia and to discover areas of this special mill not open to the public.
Moorabool Valley & You Yangs
MOORABOOL VALLEY
The Moorabool Valley is Australia’s secret wine region – a quiet achiever producing some of the country’s finest drops, in a bucolic landscape. A river runs through the dramatic countryside which is peppered with family-run cellar doors and restaurants.
Low-yielding rocky limestone and basalt soils produce grapes full of character and organic and biodynamic practices pervade the valley. Sip on James Halliday 5-star rated wines precisely paired with locally-grown produce; you’ll even discover handmade chocolates on your travels.
YOU YANGS REGIONAL PARK
Bubbling spectacularly from the Western Plains are the huge granite slabs and boulders of the You Yangs – a playground for energetic natural adventure in the Australian wilderness. They’re drizzled with trails, keeping everyone from hikers to mountain bikers, rock climbers and picnickers happy (dogs on leads
are welcome too). This significant Wadawurrung land, known as Wurdi Youang, holds hundreds of cultural sites including a water well on Big Rock. Keep an eye out for Bunjil, a huge rock formation artwork of the Wadawurrung creator spirit (wedge-tailed eagle).
You Yangs (Wurdi Youang)
SERENDIP SANCTUARY
Nearby, Serendip Sanctuary’s 250 peaceful hectares of woods and wetland are perfect for observing wildlife and birds. It’s a natural oasis within easy reach of Melbourne.
MUST TRY: Hike the 450 steps to Flinders Peak at the You Yangs for stunning views of Geelong, Melbourne, and beyond
BRISBANE RANGES NATIONAL PARK
The rocky hills and gullies of the Brisbane Ranges (Victoria’s richest wildflower habitat) are popular with hikers and campers. For a full immersion, park your tent or camper trailer in the bush camps at Boar Gully or Fridays. Next door, Steiglitz Historic Park is a window back in time to Victoria’s gold rush era of the late 1800s.
Portarlington, St Leonards & Drysdale
The string of mellow little towns hugging the north shore of The Bellarine revel in their sheltered bay beaches, long coastal pathways and abundant wineries, many of which overlook the twinkling blue Port Phillip Bay.
Portarlington Beach is a favourite with swimmers while St Leonards Pier has great snorkelling. Walk or ride the 17km Foreshore Trail between them or take on the 35km Bellarine Rail Trail, stretching to Geelong.
GUESS
WHAT: Portarlington is the mussel capital of Australia, providing more than half of the nation’s mussel harvest
Boutique wineries pair cool climate maritime drops with fine regional produce and many have breathtaking bay views. Take a mussel tour from Portarlington, where you can pluck your own from the bay, then sit back while a chef cooks them up for you on board.
For a few hours of the high life, enjoy a gastronomic dining experience aboard a moving train on the historic Bellarine Railway. Picnics can also be curated (think smoked fish, fresh sourdough, and handmade butter) and enjoyed at The Dell, a grassy coastal park tucked into the seaside cliffs at Clifton Springs.
Barwon Heads & Ocean Grove
These pretty coastal towns ‘hold hands’ across the Barwon River and are home to some of the best beaches in Australia. The area’s geography has created idyllic options for families and surfers. The Barwon River has sandy flats and sheltered waters while Ocean Grove’s Main Beach offers more froth and invigorating ocean breezes; surfers embrace the wilder 13th Beach in Barwon Heads.
HIDDEN GEM:
Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary covers 17 hectares of reef and marine life, perfect for exploring rockpools and discovering marine critters
Wander Hitchcock Avenue at Barwon Heads for boutique shopping and dining, or hike around the Bluff for sea views and a peek at one of Australia’s premiere golf
courses (The Bellarine is home to some of Australia’s best courses). End your explorations with the day’s catch at an over-water restaurant.
Queenscliff & Point Lonsdale
In Victorian times, holiday-makers flocked to Queenscliff, dining in grand buildings and staying in opulent triple-storeyed hotels.
The heritage architecture has been meticulously preserved and the town’s old world charm is striking. The wide main street is dotted with art galleries, antique treasure troves, boutique shops and cafés.
This maritime haven has a picturesque harbour where you can set-off for a day of diving, fishing or swimming with marine life and the 42-metre observation tower provides panoramic views. Board a steam train on the Bellarine Railway for a scenic ride with the family or leave the kids at home for an iconic blues concert across four carriages. Searoad Ferries cruise to and from the Mornington Peninsula from the futuristic new terminal.
Shortland Bluff lighthouse is the only black lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere
Point Lonsdale has been another idyllic coastal escape for families for generations. Its main strip is a pretty village with cafés and shops sitting directly opposite the beach. The intimate and low-key vibe is well suited to serene soaks and massages
at a day spa, but if you’re looking for thrills, head to Rip View Lookout, near Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, and watch the turbulent water race through the heads. Surfers love Point Lonsdale Back Beach while the Front Beach is more protected.
Cafés, bars & restaurants
The region’s buzzing restaurant and bar scene is now a well-known gem. Get ready to uncover everything from trendy bars to laid-back coastal cafés and hatted dining experiences.
WINE BARS
Geelong’s wine-making story dates back to the early 1800s and there are great wine bars which show off the top drops. Geelong Cellar Door celebrates the region’s best in a sophisticated setting with charm. Patrons of Belmont’s Archive Wine Bar appreciate its beer garden and regular wine education events. If you’re going coastal, drop in at The Covenant Wine Bar in Ocean Grove or Arlo Wine Bar in Portarlington.
BARS AND BEATS
Secret bars are hidden down alleyways and mysterious staircases - enjoy the speakeasy charm of The 18th Amendment Bar and art deco Non Disclosure Bar, inspired by the world’s most stylish hotel lounges.
And if live music is your jam, Piano Bar (where requests are part of the fun) or Eureka Hotel are where the magic happens.
The 18th Amendment Bar
CAFFEINE FIX
Coffee is big here and you’ll easily find a café around every corner. For Geelong waterfront views with a big breakfast head to Pavilion Geelong or beach views at The Dunes in Ocean Grove. Café culture thrives on Pako, and King of the Castle is a mustvisit with its industrial stylings.
HOT SPOT: Little Malop Street is buzzing with trendy bars, rooftop spots, cafés, and top-notch restaurants — perfect for food, drinks, and Geelong’s city vibe!
GOOD VIBES AND GOOD BITES
One of Geelong’s oldest pubs, Sawyers Arms Tavern, happens to have some of the best pub food in town, while for Greek cuisine, Mavs Greek Restaurant is the go. If water is calling you, head to Barwon Edge, immersed in greenery on the Barwon River and dishing up Middle Eastern fare. The Arborist brings all the energy with its chic, open-air vibes and a menu that’ll make you linger longer.
FANCY FEEDS
Geelong’s dining scene offers a world of unique flavours. Pakington Street is home to the hatted and innovative Tulip Restaurant while contemporary Asian delights await at nearby Two Noble. In the town’s centre, South American flair shines at ALMA or find modern French at Felix, hidden in a secret alleyway. Over in Queenscliff, TARRA provides beachfront dining with a majestic view from every table.

Spring into summer fun by the beach
When the sun shines, we embrace the outdoors, and this coastline has some of the best salt and sand in the world.
COASTAL FUN
Ocean Grove’s Main Beach is a popular family option, it’s also great for surfing (Go Ride a Wave or SeaEarth Adventures can help with lessons). Experienced surfers love 13th Beach or Point Lonsdale Back Beach.
The Barwon River Estuary is ideal for sand play, kayaking, and SUP (take care, the tide rises quickly), and there’s more sheltered swimming at Point Lonsdale Front Beach and Queenscliff’s Santa Casa Beach. Coming face to face with seals and dolphins with Sea All Dolphin Swims is thrilling for all members of the family.
AL FRESCO DINING
Summer calls for al fresco dining and the prime waterfront position of Wharf Shed or Edge make them popular choices. Wineries also lend themselves to long lazy lunches – Basils Farm offers bay views, Bellarine Estate serves traditional Texas BBQ while Leura Park charms with its beautiful outdoor dining setting. In the Moorabool Valley, Austin’s Wines has beanbags, tables and ample grassy space to spread out. Or head to At the Heads for a one-of-a-kind dining experience perched over the Barwon River.
AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Summer runs from December to February with an average daily high above 22OC. Perfect for beach days and outdoor activities.
SKY-HIGH SIPS
For sundowner drinks with water views, Sailors’ Rest is a must, while Murphys’ rooftop bar has great city and bay views. For a drink with a dash of history, head to the rooftop at 1915 within the Federal Mills precinct, a restored former woollen mill.
GUESS WHAT: Brisbane Ranges National Park has Victoria’s richest wildflower habitat and the greatest density of koalas
ACTION, ADVENTURE & WILDLIFE
When action calls, cyclists and walkers can explore routes like the Bellarine Rail Trail, Bellarine Coastal Trail and the Barwon River paths.
The You Yangs are best for mountain biking along with rock climbing and hiking.
Another bushwalking hotspot is the Brisbane Ranges National Park - Ted Errey Circuit, Anakie Gorge and Steiglitz Circuit are popular walks – but if you’re chasing sea breezes try the Barwon Bluff Circuit Walk, Edwards Point and Two Bays Lookout (good for bird spotting).
FRESH PRODUCE AND ARTISAN FARE
Discover talented makers at weekend farmers’ and craft markets. Chat directly with the growers and take home fresh produce, straight from the paddock.
Visit one of the many farmers’ markets, scan the QR code below for what’s on:
Autumn & winter vibes
AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
The cool season lasts for 3 to 4 months, from May to end of August, with an average daily temperature of 16°C.
Nothing beats cosying up indoors by the fire on a chilly day, and a good feed warms the soul.
FIRESIDE VIBES
You can happily sink into long lunches or wine tastings by the fire at Nicol’s Paddock in Waurn Ponds. There’s more fireside warmth at Café Go, which has a cosy indoor and outdoor fire or at the front bar at Portarlington Grand Hotel.
WARMING SIPS AND BITES
A hearty red or comforting meal is the perfect remedy for a chilly winter’s day. Drop in at one of our 10 James Halliday 5-star rated wineries. In August, sip a bold red at the Winter Shiraz Festival or enjoy the Pinot Affair across the region in May. Warm up with the best ramen around at Sober Ramen or a generous bowl of pasta at Caruggi
INDOOR ADVENTURES
On those cooler days, there are plenty of indoor activities to keep all ages entertained. Kids can burn-off heaps of energy at Bounce trampoline park, and climbers from beginner to expert relish the 25 climbing walls and bouldering cave at The Rock Adventure Centre. Younger children love the colour and creativity at MoPA.
ART AND HISTORY
For an art fix, Geelong Gallery features a diverse collection of Australian and international art, along with a rotating roster of engaging exhibitions. Near the waterfront, the National Wool Museum is a fascinating glimpse into Geelong’s illustrious history as the wool capital of the world.
RAINY DAY:
Explore the National Wool Museum and dive into Geelong’s woolly history
WARMING WINTER EVENTS
Although the weather may cool down, the action heats up every winter with a warming collection of events. Celebrate live music, pop-up bars, and fireworks at the Nightide Festival in Queenscliff, or enjoy the lively atmosphere at the National Celtic Folk Festival.
WHALES AHOY!
Winter is also the time to spot migrating whales, and Barwon Bluff and Point Lonsdale are the best spots for a stakeout (Jun-Aug is peak). You might even spot a whale while cruising to or from Queenscliff on Searoad Ferries.
