EASTERN BEACH
When visiting Geelong, the waterfront is a great place to start. The outlook over Corio Bay is a wonderful side dish to the fresh seafood and mouth-watering multicultural cuisines on offer – a fun place to eat, drink and play.
There are more prized pockets of Geelong to visit. Pakington Street – Pako to locals – is a well-balanced mix of eating out and boutique shopping; while the historic Fyansford Paper Mill now houses art studios, a winery and gallery.
In North Geelong, the revamped Federal Mills precinct has eateries, shops and even a gin distillery and brewery in character-filled heritage buildings. Less than half an hour away are the rolling hills of the Moorabool Valley – a wonderland of wineries. This is perfect grape-growing country and there’s no shortage of award-winning drops to try, accompanied by superb food and breathtaking views of the lush green countryside. A little further and you’ll discover the natural beauty of the You Yangs Regional Park, it’s a magnificent environment for walking, mountain biking, rock-climbing and horse riding. Keep an eye out for kangaroos, wallabies and birds while you’re there. The more you explore Geelong and the Moorabool Valley, the more there is to love.
GREATER THAN YOUR USUAL HANGOUTS.

A couple of blocks from the waterfront is the city’s cultural heart – the Little Malop Street precinct where you can discover the Geelong Arts Centre, Geelong Gallery and Geelong Library and Heritage Centre. It’s also a foodie mecca with bars and restaurants tucked down alleyways adorned with thought-provoking street art. The region’s restaurants proudly champion the locals and it’s no wonder, with some of the world’s best wine and produce made right here. A sprinkling of fun live entertainment will make a memorable night out.

GEELONG WATERFRONT
EASTERN BEACH
GEELONG WATERFRONT
The waterfront is where Geelong goes to play. Peppered with excellent restaurants and bars, it’s the site for many of the city’s much-loved events such as the Festival of Sails. Corio Bay faces north and basks in the sun most of the day. That makes it perfect for walks along the water’s edge, taking in gardens, parks, harbours and jetties; palm trees and yachts decorate the vista. Eastern Beach Train Tours operate mini train rides in the area – flag them down and hop on with the kids. Follow it up with a splash in the children’s pool or promenade at Eastern Beach Reserve. Refuel at the nearby Pavilion Geelong – a café, takeaway kiosk and restaurant inside a two-storey art deco building. For fun and games, there’s a playground next to a huge skate park near Cunningham Pier. Younger children will enjoy The Carousel - a vintage merry-go-round, the Aero Bounce Bungy Trampolines, or a gentle spin on the Giant Sky Wheel. Another option for a spectacular bird’s eye view is a joy flight with Geelong Helicopters or go up, up and away with Liberty Balloon Flights or Geelong Ballooning. Water-lovers can book a sailing lesson with the Royal Geelong Yacht Club or get a taste of 1830’s maritime life on the replica 19th century topsail schooner Enterprize Ship when it visits the waterfront. 8
TEMPO
Forming the Bollard Trail, more than 100 bollards are dotted along the waterfront. Artist Jan Mitchell transformed old pier timbers into bright works of art representing characters from Geelong’s history. Walking time is approximately two hours one way strolling past Steampacket Gardens, Cunningham Pier and Geelong Botanic Gardens. If you'd like a closer look at the Gardens, free tours are run twice a week. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, choose from an array of dining options. Novotel’s new restaurant, Tempo Kitchen & Bar, celebrates local flavours with seafood and grill-style mastery. Tucked-away off Geelong’s waterfront is French fine dining restaurant La Cachette, which means ‘hiding place’. This modern fare moves with the seasons in an intimate bistrot setting. If you’re seeking something more casual while watching the sun over Corio Bay you have options: Wah Wah Gee sits on Cunningham Pier and Wharf Shed is waterside; The Edge hosts live music while Sailors’ Rest has three levels including a rooftop bar. For fish and chips with bay views head to floating barge restaurant Geelong Boat House. If it's pizza or pasta you're after Justin Lane is the spot.

DESIGN, CULTURE & THE ARTS The city is home to a growing arts scene, supported by leading institutions and independent operators crafting a reputation through their work.

NATIONAL WOOL MUSEUM
Geelong is Australia’s only UNESCO City of Design – global recognition of the region’s industrial past and focus on cutting-edge contemporary design. If you’re wanting a hit of culture and the arts, first stop is the Little Malop Street precinct.
Neighbouring Geelong Gallery is one of Australia's oldest regional art galleries, housed within a Neoclassicalstyle building. It shows off historical and modern works – its magnificent permanent collection is complemented by seasonal exhibitions. Next door towers design gem the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre a giant, glassy dome with five levels of literature. The top-floor balcony is the perfect spot to relax with a book and enjoy sweeping views across Johnstone Park and Corio Bay, or settle in at Public Café downstairs. Down the street towards the waterfront, the National Wool Museum is set in an historic woollen mill and artfully pays homage to the importance of wool and the land to the Wadawurrung culture and the broader region. For 200 years wool fueled Australia’s economy and Geelong was known as the wool centre of the world. WERRIBEE PARK MANSION
On the other side of central Geelong, you’ll find the Museum of Play and Art (MOPA) where children aged up to seven can let their imaginations run free. Packed with bright colours, shapes and textures, MOPA allows kids to get handson and creative. Independent art spaces like Boom Gallery and Geelong Art Space encapsulate the city’s evolution from its industrial past to a creative future. Boom has repurposed a former woollen mill for its gallery, shop and café. While Geelong Art Space is located in a 1915 heritage building which housed one of the town's first florists. The works of emerging artists are displayed at Platform Arts or catch up-and-coming theatre performers at Centre Stage. Art deco treasure Palais Geelong hosts popular live shows.
> Download the free Geelong Arts and
Culture Trails app which will guide you to the region’s art studios, galleries, heritage buildings and performing arts venues. It will also direct you to Indigenous sites of significance as well as public street art and sculptures.

PRECINCTS THAT PACK A PUNCH
LITTLE MALOP STREET AND SURROUNDS The Little Malop Street precinct is a vibrant place to go day or night. The restaurants and bars dominate the strip, each offering their own take on food and drinks. You’ll find Italian, Greek, Southern American, Asian, Middle Eastern and classic pub fare. Crowds spill onto footpaths and street art brings the alleyways to life. If it’s live music you’re after there are great options. While you’re ordering a martini at Piano Bar, grab a request slip, write down the song you want to hear and get ready to dance. Nearby Pistol Pete’s Food n Blues is inspired by the tastes and sounds of Memphis and New Orleans. It’s also the spot for live blues, jazz, soul and country. Eureka Hotel is an old pub with a beautiful new look after a recent refurbishment – they regularly host live music and big acts.
A set of darkened stairs will lead you to a 1920s Chicago speakeasy - The 18th Amendment Bar - where the cocktails are theatrical works of art. Its sister venue - Manhattan Bar – is a stone’s throw away. A New York style set-up offering craft beer, wine, spirits and cocktails. There’s something so fun about a rooftop bar and The Arborist has a great one. Branches from a large Ash tree frame the restaurant where you can relax over a cocktail and Middle Eastern share plate. Even meat-lovers will be impressed with the considered veggie dishes and the gluten-free offering is also top shelf. Head to Bahjong, for dumplings and Asian street food with clever, creative twists. Here you’ll find dumpling takes on your favourite dishes like Banh Mi, moussaka and beef curry. Sober Ramen doles out deep bowls of ramen goodness as well as dumplings, sake and natural wine. The beef rib ramen is cooked for 16 hours.

Whether you’re searching for something new to wear or hunting for a one-off find, the region has you covered for fashion, homewares, art and antiques or the endless possibilities of a vintage market. Jade & May has a carefully curated selection of homewares, art and sleepwear – much of it is made by creatives in the area. In central Geelong, Townhouse Living is a local’s favourite for stunning hand-selected homewares, unique luxury gifts and fresh flowers. Empire & Laurel also specialise in gifts and lighting.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
Adventures in beautiful places, walks through the wilderness and picturesque picnics are the region’s bread and butter. There’s an abundance of trails to wander and secluded spots to nestle throughout the regional and national parks and along the water’s edge; with plenty to delight little people too.
Barrabool Maze Estate is a hedge maze set in the beautiful green Barrabool hills. The whole family will have fun trying to find the way to the central lookout – the view is worth the effort. Once you’ve made your way back out, you can stroll through the sprawling and carefully tended gardens and enjoy a meal at the licenced restaurant. > barraboolmaze.com.au Marvel at the magic of Fairy Park – a fairytale theme park with castles, cottages and caves set on a granite hill in the open countryside. THE YOU YANGS Named from Wadawurrung language ‘Wurdi Youang’ means ‘big hills’. This region has been a significant site for the local Wadawurrung people for more than 60,000 years and the resources available on these lands provided a sustainable life. There are more than 300 cultural heritage sites in the area including water wells which were made by enlarging natural hollows in the rock. There’s also a sculpture of Bunjil, the Wadawurrung Creator Spirit. From the highest peaks, the 360-degree views are over the expanses of Wadawurrung country and as far as Melbourne.
26
The You Yangs Regional Park is a wonderful place to get active in nature. It has a vast array of tracks for walking and hiking and there are also horseriding trails, plus 50km of dedicated mountain bike tracks. Rock climbing and orienteering are also popular here. Geelong Adventure Specialists can guide you on any of these activities and will have you abseiling down rock faces before you know it. They also offer bush adventure therapy sessions. More than 200 species of birds have been recorded around the You Yangs and the park is also home to koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, echidnas and lizards. There are plenty of spots to choose from for picnics and barbecues and dogs on leads are welcome, making it a great place to share with your furry friend. > geelongadventurespecialists.com.au > parks.vic.gov.au
YOU YANGS (WURDI YOUANG)
About 10km from the You Yangs Regional Park, Serendip Sanctuary is a serene oasis that feels a world away, despite being close to the Lara township and easily accessible from Geelong and Melbourne. It’s a haven for wildlife in the Western Volcanic Plains where you can walk through 250 hectares of grassy woodlands and wetlands to discover free roaming animals such as kangaroos, wallabies, emus and up to 150 bird species. There’s a picnic space and barbecue area. > parks.vic.gov.au
BRISBANE RANGES NATIONAL PARK A somewhat hidden secret north-west of Lara, the Brisbane Ranges National Park is a preserved piece of wilderness and beauty, with the richest wildflower habitat in Victoria. The geology of the area - hills, ridges and gullies - has protected the plant life and wildlife. Kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, possums and gliders plus 170 species of birds have all been spotted. There are several walks, from easy family-friendly strolls to multi-day hikes. Picnic areas abound, some with electric or BYOwood barbecues. There are campsites at Boars Gully and Fridays, some are suitable for trailers and caravans and all must be booked. > parks.vic.gov.au
BRISBANE RANGES NATIONAL PARK
STEP BACK IN TIME IN STEIGLITZ Steiglitz is a window back in time to Victoria’s gold rush era. It was once a bustling gold mining town where, at its height, 1,500 people lived and worked. Today, it’s a ghost town, known as Steiglitz Historic Park where visitors can take a bushwalk and pan for gold. The Court House displays relics from the past including photographs and artifacts. > parks.vic.gov.au
LARA GEMS A hidden secret in Lara – less than 10km from Avalon Airport – is the Kevin Hoffman Walk, a wonderful native and Indigenous garden trail alongside Hovells Creek. Then enjoy coffee and cake among the lush gardens of Roraima Nursery which nurtures a collection of unusual, exotic and drought-tolerant plants. > friendsofkevinhoffmanwalk.com.au > roraimanursery.com.au
