Take it outside. From the sun-kissed waters at Geist and Morse reservoirs to the hidden gem of Strawtown Koteewi Park and the meandering pedestrian trails, there are plenty of ways to take the fun outside in Hamilton County. Hit the Trails: Walk, Bike or Swim! One of the most popular urban greenways in the nation and a Rail-Trail Hall of Fame honoree, the Monon Trail, stretches nearly 20 miles from Westfield to Indianapolis and is a retreat for runners, roller bladers, bikers and casual walkers. Enthusiasts are easily lured off the trail by local shops and eateries in the Carmel Arts and Design District or detours, such as the quaint, two-mile

Hagan-Burke Trail or Natalie Wheeler Trail in Westfield. See even more by bike where you’ll find plenty of family-friendly routes in Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield. Hamilton County’s newest trails are at Flat Fork Creek Park in Fishers, which opened in late 2014. Five miles of trails wind around ponds, a sledding hill and even three treehouses (climbing is encouraged). The county’s first single track and progressive mountain bike trails for youth to intermediate riders will open in the spring of 2015. Lace up your hiking shoes and head to Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve in Fishers or Cool Creek Park in Carmel, where you’ll find native plants and animals in their natural habitats. Or give footgolf (part soccer, part golf) a try at Balmoral Golf Club in Fishers or Fox Prairie Golf Course in Noblesville. When you hit the trail in Forest Park just north of Noblesville’s historic downtown, you can walk – or better yet, bike – through the park where you’ll find the Indiana Transportation Museum, a nine-hole golf course, mini-golf and aquatic center.

Head west on the trail and you’ll go straight toward Morse Beach, which is one of two sandy beaches in Hamilton County (you’ll find the other in Saxony in Fishers). If it’s water you’re after, rent a kayak at the beach, a pontoon boat on the reservoirs or head to the Monon Center and grab a tube to float in the lazy river. However, the latest craze to hit Hamilton County is archery at Koteewi Range at Strawtown Koteewi Park (pronounced ko-TEY-wee), which is a 750-acre nature park along the White River in Noblesville. In addition to the archery range, you can launch a canoe, hike, bike, fish or do an archaeological exploration. There really is something for everyone in Hamilton County’s great outdoors.

Hear it live in Hamilton County. Live music in Hamilton County has never sounded so good. Maybe it has to do with all the new venues, worldrenowned performances, top rockers and free live outdoor performances spring through fall and at coffee shops and music halls all year long. On the Big Stage The Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts is the granddaddy of stages when it comes to concert halls. Michael Feinstein, the ambassador of the Great American Songbook and creative director, brings together an unmatched season of classical, songbook, dance and country performances for audiences to enjoy inside this world-class venue.

On any given summer weekend, you’ll find about 24,000 music lovers jamming under the stars at Indiana’s largest outdoor concert venue, Klipsch Music Center in Noblesville, which brings some of the biggest names in the international music scene and weekend music festivals. For a more relaxed atmosphere, pack a picnic and head to Conner Prairie for the summer Symphony on the Prairie, where the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and other entertainers perform in the outdoor amphitheater through Labor Day.

Hear It for Free (or Nearly So) If you plan your trip right, you could hear live music just about every day of the week. With free weekly concerts in community parks in Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield, you’ll hear everything from rock, pop, blues and jazz, and won’t be able to stop yourself from clapping (maybe even dancing) along. For small-town charm with big-city tunes, head to the Atlanta Music Hall where a versatile sextet (banjo, two guitars, drums, clarinet or sax and piano) fill the hall with an eclectic mix, and you won’t find anything stronger at the bar than the brewed sweet tea. The same goes for the Hedgehog Music Showcase in Arcadia, or the Logan Street Sanctuary in Noblesville, where you may see a GrammyAward winner or a local favorite perform country, bluegrass, jazz, blues, swing.

Cool Creek Park

New to the music scene is the venue The Warehouse in Carmel’s Arts & Design District, where the motto is “Live for the Music.” Also new in Carmel is PorchFest in September, where emerging musicians perform – where else than – on front porches throughout the downtown area. Music venues don’t get more personal than that. It’s all in Hamilton County where music has never sounded so good.
