EPIC IDAHO ROADTRIP Stops 1-10
31-40
In this guide, we’ve broken down how to explore the best of Idaho – thrilling whitewater adventures, fly fishing blue-ribbon streams, relaxing on sunny beaches, and tasting wine in idyllic vineyards. For a quick adventure, try one of the day trips for new finds in a time crunch. For a true escape, the three-day weekend trips may be the perfect getaway. And if the world is your oyster and you want to explore the entire state, the Epic Idaho Road Trip has you covered. Do it all at once or enjoy sections as your time allows. Everything is mapped out so you don’t miss a thing. Each trip follows at least one scenic byway, and highlights the route, mileage, and activity suggestions along the way. Allot a bit more time for attractions that aren’t directly on the main route. You may also want to book some activities in advance, such as tee time on the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course, jet boat tours, and rafting trips. Many of our road trip guides include recommendations for local breweries and wineries. While we want you to enjoy these local Idaho libations, we remind you to drink responsibly. Find additional adventures, lodging ideas, and more iconic Idaho experiences at visitidaho.org. Tag your epic road trip photos #VisitIdaho and #RoadTripIdaho. *Due to winter snowfall, most of these trips are best suited for warmer months—spring through fall. Check road conditions before heading out at 511.idaho.gov. You can also download the 511 app courtesy of the Idaho Transportation Department.

DAY TRIPS Sometimes you want to get away for an adventure, but don’t have much time. With casual hikes, waterfalls, historical sites, and stunning scenery, these four short day-trips are sure to get you there. The Nature Seeker route in North Central Idaho is heavy on outdoor exploration. Visit Hells Gate State Park or hike a few miles to reach the three waterfalls that make up Elk Creek Falls. In South Central Idaho, The Geologic Explorer route leads you to a mysteriously balanced 40-ton rock, past historic fossil beds, and to stunning waterfalls. In Eastern Idaho, the Mesa Falls day trip guides you to thundering waterfalls, the Teton Geotourism Center, and giant sand dunes in St. Anthony. Finally, the Wet ‘N Wild trip takes adventurers into spectacular Hells Canyon – America’s deepest river gorge – via raft or jet boat.

THE GEOLOGIC EXPLORER Take a day to discover Idaho’s
geological past, archaeological finds, and World War II monuments. Allow extra time to see some of the attractions that are off the main road, like Balanced Rock and Minidoka National Historic Site. DAY TRIP
MESA FALLS Mesa Falls
To experience Mother Nature
at her finest, buckle up for this spectacular ride in eastern Idaho. Your destination may be Mesa Falls, but along the way you’ll enjoy picture-perfect views of the Grand Teton Mountains against lush farmland, the legendary Henry’s Fork of the Snake River shimmering in the sunlight, and trumpeter swans gliding in Harriman State Park’s Silver Lake. Plan a full day to experience Mesa Falls and its visitor center, take a leisurely walk in Harriman State Park, and hike up a few sand dunes. Pack binoculars, sneakers, water shoes, and a fly rod. Fort Henry Scenic Byway – from Island Park to Kilgore – is an unpaved, hard-packed dirt road. Drive slowly but enjoy the rustic solitude this route provides.

BLUE RIBBON WATERS A mecca for fly fishermen the world over, Henry’s Fork of the Snake River is prized for its trout and meandering, picturesque waters. Box Canyon is one of the more accessible fishing areas, and the waters in Harriman State Park offer some of the best dry fly fishing anywhere.
MESA FALLS Along Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, Upper and Lower Mesa Falls tumble dramatically over volcanic rock that’s more than a million years old. Experience the beauty of the Upper Falls from a viewing platform near the Mesa Falls Visitor Center. Hike a mile to the Lower Falls or drive south on the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway to the Grandview Overlook.
DAY TRIP
WET ‘N WILD This adventure promises a
wild ride through Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest river gorge and one of Idaho’s most pristine landscapes. You’ll drive alongside the mighty Snake River as it twists through the canyon, and stop to take in breathtaking scenery, play in the water, or cast a line. The road stops just beyond the Hells Canyon Dam, but you can venture farther into the wild on a raft or jet boat. Hells Canyon is remote, so fill up on gas, drinks, and snacks before you leave Council or Cambridge. Bring binoculars and possibly water shoes and bathing suits for splashing and soaking along the way. Keep an eye on the clock during this trip as you cross from Mountain time to Pacific time along the drive.

Now known for the relaxing and restorative mineral waters, the Lava Hot Springs hot pools are made up of five soaking pools of varying temperature without the sulfur odor. The more adventurous visitor can take a dip at the Olympic Swimming Pool and Waterpark. Best Time to Travel: June-September Good For: + Young Free Spirits + Adventure Seekers + Go For It Families + Experience Seekers
We go big in Idaho: North America’s deepest gorge, millions of acres of wildlands, jagged peaks, world-class trout streams, and hundreds of alpine lakes. On this epic trip, you’ll play your way through the most stunning of these landscapes.
One dramatic vista after another greets you as you travel several scenic byways, stopping to raft, swim, or jet boat in Idaho’s many streams, rivers, and lakes, golf the expanse of gorgeous courses, or hike to secluded springs. There are quieter experiences, too, for those who prefer the solitude of one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite streams or sipping wine in a serene vineyard. The journey begins and ends in Boise. Most adventures offer options for varying ages and experience levels, so bring the whole family, or your best friends! Bikes, kayaks, paddleboards, and other gear are available to rent from outfitters and local shops throughout the trip.

For an adventure a short drive outside of Coeur d’Alene, this 15-mile-long biking and hiking trail utilizes what could easily be one of the most scenic former railroad routes in the country. The last train ran this route in 1980, and the first 13 miles of the trail were opened to the public in 1998 for hiking and biking. The completely downhill trail now features 10 train tunnels and seven sky-high trestles. Shuttle buses are available at the end to transport you and your bike back to the top. Trail passes, shuttle tickets and mountain bike rentals with lights are available at Lookout Pass Ski Area.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River National Geographic ranks the Middle Fork of the Salmon River as one of the top three whitewater river trips in the world. It flows through the largest wilderness area in the Lower 48, the 2.4-millionacre Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness, a majestic and varied landscape of rugged cliffs and narrow canyons, forested shores and bluffs, and 300+ named rapids. The ultimate Middle Fork experience is a five- to seven-day guided trip, which combines exhilarating whitewater with hiking, hot springs soaking, superb dining, and wine sipping on the shores of a truly wild river.

Credited as the creator of the modern growler, this brewery first began operations in Wyoming in 1988, and moved to the base of the Teton Pass in Idaho ten years later to expand production. Local barley and hops, and nearby glacier water run-off make this beer a true “taste of Idaho.” Private brewery tours are offered – just call in advance to check availability.

City of Rocks National Reserve Located roughly an hour south of Burley, this national reserve and neighboring state park, Castle Rocks, were once a known stopping point along the California Trail. Large rock formations lend the area its name, and many still bear the signatures of some of the emigrants that passed through. The area is now known for its many rock climbing options, hiking, biking, and camping. Be sure to stop into the visitor center and talk to a local ranger for more information on this historic and adventurous landscape.

Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve Craters of the Moon is a vast ocean of lava flows with scattered islands of cinder cones and sagebrush. You’ll know you’re close as the surrounding desert landscape changes starts to change around you into black hardened lava rock. Temperatures vary throughout the year- reaching sweltering levels in the summer and dipping below freezing in the winter. In 2017 the monument was designated an International Dark Sky Park for its outstanding night skies and low light pollution. Stop at the visitor center at the entrance to learn about the past, present, and future of the lava fields that form this otherworldly landscape.
