What is Taste Isle of Ma n? Taste Isle of Man is an independently assessed quality assurance scheme which recognises establishments providing consistently high quality dining. different categories, ‘Restaurants’, ‘Cafés & Tearooms’, ‘Pubs & Bars’, ‘Takeaways’ and ‘Street Food’ – so no matter what you are looking for, there will be a great option for you.
The Taste initiative is part of a national quality assessment scheme benchmarked throughout the British Isles. As such, participating venues are assessed on the full dining experience offered to you, the customer. While the emphasis is firmly on the quality of food, the assessors also look out for warmth of welcome, service and hospitality, cleanliness and a commitment to the use of local produce.
What to look out for
The scheme incorporates many different styles of dining experience and this guide contains five

Through Taste Isle of Man, eateries are awarded ‘quality assured’ or ‘highest quality assured’ accolades in recognition of the first-rate dining experiences that they offer visitors.

Welcome Schemes The ‘Welcome Schemes’ have been created to cater for visitors that require a little extra from their eating out experience. The Welcome Schemes include Walkers Welcome, Cyclists Welcome, Dogs Welcome, Bikers Welcome, Groups Welcome and Families Welcome. Taste members are assessed against specific criteria (e.g. somewhere safe to store bicycles) in order to earn a ‘Welcome’ rating.

Ha rvest Isle of Ma n Look out for the special plaques which identify members of the Harvest Isle of Man scheme. Establishments displaying this plaque will be accredited members of the Taste Isle of Man quality assurance scheme and will also have requested to be assessed against Harvest Isle of Man criteria, because the use of local produce is a valued part of their ethos.
05 03
So you can expect great service, food, drink and surroundings with fresh local products. The criteria validates the use of produce which has been grown, caught, reared, brewed or processed in the Isle of Man and the assessors also check that staff can explain the use of local produce to customers.
More information on the Harvest Isle of Man scheme can be found in the Isle of Man Guide to Food and Drink, along with full details of local food and drink producers. The guide is available to download from www.gov.im/foodanddrink
So if you share a passion for the local provenance of your food, Harvest accredited eateries are well worth a visit.

The Secret Pizza Company began life as two people (Tom & Kylie) & a little Daihatsu Hijet van with a half tonne clay oven in the back of it! Throw in a year, some incredible Manx festival experiences & a whole heap of amazing people and they now have their very own microrestaurant in Castletown. They have tried their absolute hardest to retain the street food vibe by offering communal seating, not taking bookings and half of their seats being out in the Manx elements! But by far the most important part of their journey has been the incredible people they have met along the way. By engaging with Manx food & drinks producers, the IOM Government artists, artisans, events companies and organisers they have made some true friends,
and what could be better than being able to support other businesses in their endeavours. The produce available on the Isle of Man is second to none; their pizza bases are made using Laxey Flour, cheeses are from the world famous Isle of Man Creamery and the greens are from Staarvey Farm. They sell exclusively Manx apple juice from the awesome folk over at Apple Orphanage, the mixers are from Roots Beverage Co, with 10% of their profits being reinvested back into our local bee population and the awesome craft lager is from the amazing Bushy’s brewery! The Secret Pizza Company can’t wait to continue discovering what this little gem of an Island has to offer!

The Black Dog Oven is a ramshackle set-up which pops-up at events and private functions around the Island. The wood-fired oven is housed in an old green horsebox, bought in 2016. Primarily they make pizzas, focusing on fresh local produce. The dough is made from Laxey Glen flour and the local Ellerslie rapeseed oil, topped with their homemade tomato sauce and 2 cheeses, including IOM Creameries mature cheddar. Their customers can watch as the pizzas are hand-stretched and topped to order, then cooked in their 400 degree oven.
It takes only minutes, but they can usually squeeze in a chat while waiting! The team are very proud to be part of a growing local food scene, and are very happy to have local chorizo, queenies, sausages and cured meats at their disposal. They even make their own very popular wild-garlic pesto! Their pizzas are not posh, they’re not always round, but they are Manx and they’re assured by their customers that they are very very tasty...

Born in Ghana (West Africa) as the eldest of nine children, Lydia’s cooking journey started from the age of ten. Embedded within Ghanaian culture is the tradition that girls learn how to cook in order to help provide homecooked meals for the family. Lydia therefore developed an interest in cooking from an early age and by twelve she was cooking under the supervision of her mother. Her passion for food grew alongside her cooking skills as she continued to get involved in food preparation when visiting friends and family across West Africa.
This allowed Lydia to perfect her recipes and inspired her to create new dishes and flavour combinations using authentic ingredients. Now influenced by a career in nursing, Lydia’s style of cooking is both wholesome and traditional with an emphasis on using fresh, high quality ingredients. Jabali’s dishes are always prepared from scratch using lots of local produce and are full of flavour. Jabali provides outside catering for a variety of events across the Isle of Man, and caters for private functions, weddings, dinner parties and themed nights.
