MAY Look out for our Bear Hunt Adventure Weekends across the year! In February The Spirit of the Orient is an atmospheric festival of lights, set in the ancient woodland at Robin Hill Country Park. Walk the Wight in May is an iconic charity event that attracts thousands of walkers every year. The route crosses the entire width of the island, starting in Bembridge and finishing at the Needles – although you can choose to do a section, rather than the full 26 miles. Many people walk or run the route in fancy dress to raise money for Earl Mountbatten Hospice. Newport’s Jazz Weekend kicks off at the very end of May with some hot jazz and cool blues at venues ranging from theatres to pubs. It’s a big year for the Isle of Wight Festival, held in Newport in June – perhaps the most iconic festival in the world. Founded in 1968, the event celebrates its fiftieth birthday this year

This incorporates the Round the Island Race, which is one of the world’s largest and most famous yacht races. Over two weeks you can attend a range of amazing nautical events including the pirate-themed Shipwreck Isle, a two day event packed with family fun. In July the island welcomes UK Pride 2018 to Ryde for a spectacular parade through the town to the beach. Cowes Week kicks off on August 4, attracting thousands of people every day for the world’s biggest sailing regatta, with sailing races, entertainment, food and fireworks. TRAVELLING AROUND THE ISLAND TRAVELLING AROUND THE ISLE OF WIGHT COULDN’T BE EASIER, WITH A RANGE OF OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO HELP YOU COVER EVERY INCH OF THE 25 X 14 MILES OF THE ISLAND
BY CAR Many of the roads on the island are narrow, so please take extra care while driving on them and be aware of more vulnerable road users, such as cyclists, walkers and horse riders. The roads are well signposted, with brown signs pointing you to the majority of key attractions, events and places of interest. There are speed restrictions on roads across much of the island, with several
BY BUS You’ll see Southern Vectis buses wherever you go. There are 14 regular routes in operation connecting most parts of the island. Regular buses run between the main towns and resorts until very late at night, with services to rural areas operating throughout the day. The bus service operates 365 days a year. Bus stops are easily accessible from the ferry terminals.
dedicated 20MPH zones.
BY BIKE The Isle of Wight was recently voted as one of the world’s top cycling destinations by Lonely Planet, and an excellent network of cycleways and rail trails links up much of the island. “Bicycle Island” is also a great place for a cycling holiday. There are cycling routes to suit everyone, with a choice of
BY FOOT There are over 500 miles of public rights of way to explore on the island, and going by foot gives you some of the best views over the coast and countryside. The Isle of Wight is a walker’s paradise, filled with footpaths across contrasting landscapes and beaches, making it the ideal place for a walking holiday or break. This extensive network of footpaths can take you from a gentle meander along rural tree lined paths to longer challenging hikes over open fields and chalk downs. The Isle of Wight’s varied countryside includes fields, forests and woodland, providing the perfect complement to our 64 miles of coastal paths which cover rocky coves, estuaries, and dramatic cliff tops. So put your best foot forward – you’re never far from a secret cove or enchanting village.

DRIVE LESS SEE MORE ON BICYCLE ISLAND IT’S SO EASY TO GET AROUND THE ISLE OF WIGHT. PART OF THE ISLAND’S CHARM IS HOW ACCESSIBLE IT IS TO EXPLORE THE VARIED LANDSCAPE ON TWO WHEELS OR WITH A STOUT PAIR OF BOOTS
Cyclists won’t be disappointed. “Bicycle Island” is criss-crossed by trails, byways and a tangle of pretty country lanes that cry out to become lost in. You can push your own bikes onto the ferries for free or hire cycles while you’re here, including electric assist bikes from one of the cycle hire/tour companies on the island. Baggage transfer services allow you to ride from place to place with only a credit card and picnic to weigh you down. For families or “easy riders”, try the Red Squirrel Cycle Trail. Give yourself a day and a half to navigate your way along the mostly flat and traffic free cycleways built on disused railway lines. This is a wonderful chance to spot red squirrels and other wildlife in the tree lined hedgerows. Visitors on foot can choose between the inland trails or the contrasting gradients of the circular coastal path. The train and bus services will help you to explore the countryside. At tourist information points, you can find a series of leaflets entitled “Rambles by Bus” produced by the Ramblers Association and the island bus company. These “bus stop to bus stop” walks take you through stunning scenery. The Isle of Wight Steam Railway from Wootton to Smallbrook Junction, has convenient connections to the Island Line which runs between Ryde and Shanklin. Or how about getting around on horseback? There are hundreds of miles of bridleways and a plethora of equestrian centres. And finally, why not try viewing the island from the sea? You can go on an organised boat tour or hire sea kayaks, RIBs, dinghies or even a yacht. Anchors away!

ISLE OF WIGHT AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY THE ISLE OF WIGHT HAS A RICH VARIETY OF DISTINCTIVE LANDSCAPES WHICH IS OFTEN DESCRIBED AS LOWLAND ENGLAND IN MINIATURE. TAKE TIME TO EXPLORE THE WILD AND VARIED TERRAIN IT HAS TO OFFER
The Island’s landscape and coastline offer fantastic experiences of dramatic cliffs, long and hidden beaches, quiet estuaries which are a haven for wildlife, gently rolling patchwork fields with secret woodlands, open chalk downs and stunning views across the Island’s countryside and coast. In 1963 half the Isle of Wight was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This was undertaken to ensure that one of England’s finest landscapes is conserved and enhanced for future generations to enjoy.
