a fresher perspective. What makes ithaca worth visiting? You’d think we’d have a quick answer. But we don’t. It’s not like pointing to a menu and saying, “try the veal.” In Ithaca, you need a different perspective. Don’t get us wrong, it’s a good menu. Ithaca has gorges and waterfalls and very smart colleges. There’s a fun downtown, great restaurants, lush vineyards and a spectacular lake. The menu’s solid. But it’s a standard view. The “it” in Ithaca is off the menu. And way more interesting. Look more closely: in Ithaca, there are 758 graduate-degree-holders per square mile. There’s a buddhist monastery on one hill and an atom smasher under the next. There’s a brewery that grows its own hops, a deli that raises its own pork and a bar that mixes its cocktails based on what’s fresh at the farmers market. Ithaca is birthplace of the sundae, hometown of lolita and site of the world’s largest human peace sign. One neighborhood shares a 50,000-watt solar system. Another shares porches to stage a 10-block music fest. And outside of town are farms and fields and 28,000 acres of public forest where you can relax and unwind and just plain breathe. And did we mention the waterfalls? See what we mean? Ithaca is more about discovery than itinerary. It unfolds best when you turn to look beyond the expected. But that advice doesn’t

fit on a typical menu, especially for people who want to hear, “try the veal.” So when those folks ask why Ithaca, we fall back on the old bumper sticker. We say, “Ithaca is Gorges.” See a waterfall. And skip the veal. The local thai is better.

Andy Zepp Andy Zepp knows gorges. It comes with the terrain when you manage thousands of acres of public-access land near Ithaca. As executive director of the Finger Lakes Land Trust, hiking boots anchor his business wardrobe—hardly what he imagined growing up in the shadows of Manhattan. But arriving at Cornell his perspective shifted. The gorges got him. Out went a degree in labor relations and in came a masters in resource management—which he put to quick use as V.P. of programs at the Land Trust Alliance in Washington. There was only one downside: his hiking boots fit poorly inside the Beltway. “I was spending a lot of time in airplanes flying to meetings where people talked about programs that managed natural lands,” he said. “I found I was living vicariously. I was too far removed from the work I loved.” Now, with his boots planted firmly in Ithaca, he has the best of all worlds. “Ithaca has wonderful natural landscapes with the kind of cultural resources you’d never expect in a rural city,” he said. “It’s remarkable.” And it’s home to his favorite gorge, Lick Brook, part of the Land Trust’s Sweedler Preserve. “It’s five minutes from downtown but it feels absolutely wild and remote. Taughannock Falls, from which this park takes its name, is one of the outstanding natural attractions of the Northeast. Exciting to view in any season, this 215 foot waterfall plunges through a rock amphitheater whose walls reach nearly 400 feet. Ice skating, sledding slope, limited cross-country skiing, summer recreation program available. Summer Concert Series in the park July & August. The park features 4 trails that wander along and around Taughannock Creek.

Enfield Glen is the scenic highlight of this park. This is an area of rustic beauty with craggy gorges and winding trails bearing‚ “fire and brimstone‚” names like Lucifer Falls and Devil’s Kitchen. Come explore our Historic Gristmill with interpretive signs. The park features 6 trails with spectacular rocky gorges and wooded sections. A 3 mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail goes through the park.

Tour the Solar System! In November of 1997 a unique, educational monument and memorial was dedicated. Built, in part, to honor Ithaca resident and Cornell Professor Carl Sagan, the Sagan Planet Walk is a scale model of the Solar System in the midst of the City of Ithaca, and part of the Sciencenter Museum exhibits. Lex Chutintaranond Lex Chutintaranond and Flaminia Cervesi fell in love over food. He, from Thailand, is an IBM engineer turned restaurateur. She, from Italy, is a devout pastry chef turned Cornell linguist. Together, they overcame oceans to meet in Ithaca. Lex was opening ZaZa’s Cuccina at the time, his fourth successful Ithaca restaurant, and in keeping with the project he decided to learn Italian. Flaminia took him on as pupil. It didn’t work. Lex failed language class but over Pappardelle Bolognese and Dark Chocolate Sicilian Orange Torte, he discovered his soul mate. Now they’re married and working on Lex’s newest project, Mia, where Flaminia’s pastries star on the dessert menu. “Thailand and Italy seem worlds apart but we found so much in common,” Lex said. “That’s one of the nice things about Ithaca. You can meet people here from anywhere in the world. The perspective is international.” Which makes it a great place run a restaurant. Or eat in one. Or fall in love.

Rachel Hogancamp The road less travelled wasn’t twisted enough for Rachel Hogancamp. She ditched the trail entirely and went straight for the metaphoric woods. Rachel’s journey began off the beaten path, studying voice, theatre and art history at Ithaca College. Her degree in arts administration came without a career roadmap. Then, shortly after graduation, her career track aligned. A Broadway production company offered a job—the proverbial foot in the door. She was thrilled, strangely vindicated, but felt a looming misstep. Exeunt, pursued by a bear, Rachel fled the theatre. “I realized that if I took that path, walked through that door, my life would turn into something I didn’t really want,” she said. “I wanted something more human, more connected, more real.” The insight gave her a fresh perspective and turned the page to an unexpected career rooted in healing. Seventeen years later, she’s one of the best in the field in of massage therapy. Her aptly named Rasa Spa—Sanskrit for “true essence”— reflects her passion and mirrors something she loves about the community itself. “Ithaca is real,” she said. “People make conscious decisions here. I love it.”

THE GREENER GUIDE With its dramatic gorges and waterfalls, the Ithaca area is synonymous with natural beauty. Ithacans savor their unique sense of place and embrace every opportunity to sustain the quality of local life. From the landmark Moosewood Restaurant—a pioneering supporter of locally raised organic food—to the new Maquire car dealership—New York’s first LEED-Platinum certified auto dealer—Ithaca is as green as it is “gorges.” Did you know… Almost 17 percent of Ithacans walk or bike to work, among the highest rates in the nation. An entire neighborhood, EcoVillage, was created in 1991 to prove the benefits of a sustainable suburban lifestyle. Its 60 families live well while consuming 40 percent less energy than average New Yorkers. Cornell University, the county’s largest employer, keeps tons of CO2 out of the atmosphere by using the deep water of Cayuga Lake to cool its buildings. The university is years ahead of schedule to produce zero carbon by 2050. The Ithaca area has one of the highest concentrations of solar electric systems in the state, including three solar-powered B&Bs: Stone Quarry House, Frogs Way and Wild Goose. Ithaca College put sustainability at the core of its educational mission. Its new LEED-certified business school and Athletics and Events Center are emblematic of a green building boom at IC and all over the community. You can actually tour Ithaca’s newest eco buildings each fall during the community’s Green Building Open House. Ithaca and surrounding Tompkins County recycle 60 percent of all solid waste—75 percent by 2015. It’s among the highest rates anywhere, earning Tompkins County recognition as the nation’s first “Go Green County of the Year.”

The green emphasis even extends to the community dog park—home of the nation’s only large-scale pet waste composting program—where six tons of poop are converted into beneficial landscape compost every year. How’s that for extreme green? We’re helping too. This publication became New York’s first green travel guide back in 2009 and we continue to minimize its footprint by using recycled paper and earth-friendly printing. Samite Mulondo Samite Mulondo puts the “world” in world music. He fell in love with flute as a child in Uganda, became an accomplished musician as a refugee in Kenya, and now performs around the world from a home in Ithaca. Over three decades, Samite (pronounced SAH mee tay) has become a leading voice in African music, playing with artists like Wyclef Jean, The African Children’s Choir, Paul Winter, and Angelique Kidjo in global events ranging from the Berlin International Peace Festival and the New Orleans Jazz Festival, to Ithaca’s homegrown Grassroots Festival. When not performing, Samite is active in Musicians for World Harmony, an organization he co-founded to bring music and music therapy to orphans and refugees in Africa, many of whom are struggling with HIV/AIDS. In Ithaca he finds the peace and serenity to recharge his spirit. “For a creative person, there is not a better place to live,” he said. “It’s calming to come back here. The lake, the gorges, wherever you turn you see inspiration. You don’t have to work so hard to be creative.” He also appreciates living in a sharing community that embraces artists and musicians—a favor returned at local galleries, stages and at annual festivals like Grassroots, Samite’s favorite. “That’s where I play my best,” he said. photo Sheryl Sinkow

Here’s some practical advice for maximum enjoyment of

the Ithaca area. Plan your visit to coincide with one of our community’s many festivals and events. From the wacky Ithaca Festival and inexplicable “Rutabaga Curl,” to the educational Winter Recess, and wholesome Apple Harvest Festival, there’s always something fun going on. If possible, we recommend timing a portion of your stay during midweek when things are less hectic. Weekends, particularly in midsummer and fall, are extremely busy and often require advance reservations. Similarly, you’ll want to book early for holiday and graduation weekends. But whenever you come, prepare to be amazed and prepare to return. Sixty-nine percent of Ithaca travelers become repeat visitors. Enjoy your stay (again).

Swim beneath a waterfall at Buttermilk Falls State Park or Robert Treman State Park.

Hike up the gorge at little-known Lick Brook Falls. It’s wild and completely undeveloped. But be careful, there are no rails or fences.

Bring your picnic basket, a blanket and a bottle of Finger Lakes wine to the weekly lakeside concerts at Taughannock Falls State Park. They’re scheduled every Saturday evening in the summer.
