a fresher perspective. What makes ithaca worth visiting? You’d think we’d have a quick answer. But we don’t. It’s not like pointing to a menu and saying, “try the veal.” Don’t get us wrong, the menu’s great: Ithaca has waterfalls and gorges and very smart colleges. There’s a fun downtown, fine food & wine and a spectacular lake. The menu’s solid. But the “it” in Ithaca is off the menu and way more interesting. Take a fresh perspective. Look deeper. In Ithaca, there are 758 graduate-degree-holders per square mile. There’s a Tibetan monastery on one hill and a 50,000-watt solar system on the next. There’s a brewery that grows its own hops, a deli that raises its own pork and a bar that mixes its cocktails based on what’s fresh at the farmers market. Ithaca is the birthplace of the sundae, the hometown of LOLITA and the site of the world’s largest human peace sign. And did we mention all the waterfalls? See what we mean? Ithaca is more about discovery than itinerary. It unfolds best when you look off the menu. But that advice is challenging for folks who just want to hear, “try the veal.” So for them, we fall back on the old bumper sticker. We say, “’Ithaca is Gorges.’ Go see some waterfalls.” But between us, there’s so much more. Just bring your curiosity. And skip the veal. The local Thai is better.

sense of wonder. You never know what you’ll discover. It could be something fleeting, like a rainbow in the mist below Ithaca Falls. Or maybe something powerful, like insight from an acclaimed speaker on campus. It could taste sweet, like the fresh honey at the Ithaca Farmers Market or even bittersweet, like bumping into an old love at homecoming. Whatever it is, you can bet it will be beautiful. Imagine a perfect note sung under the stars at a Cayuga Lake concert, or the scent of fall leaves deep in Buttermilk Gorge. Whether it’s at a museum on Ithaca’s aptly named Discovery Trail, among the vineyards of the Cayuga Wine Trail, or at any of our shops, parks, galleries or stages, you’ll find Ithaca excels in the unexpected. Bring all your senses. And your camera.
Pack all your senses when visiting Ithaca, especially your

and many of the best are near Ithaca on Cayuga Lake. Its deep waters and sloped hillsides create a microclimate perfect for award-winning Riesling, Cabernet Franc and a number of delicious varietals. Cayuga’s fields and orchards offer an abundance of fresh ingredients that are crafted into beer, hard cider, mead, port and artisan spirits. Though you can buy these beverages at shops and restaurants nationwide, they’re best sampled at the source. Tours and tastings are offered year-round. Welcome to wine country.

Miles of smiles. Local pride and independent
This year we’re turning 40. No, we’re not having a midlife crisis, buying a Harley and taking up skydiving. We’re happy right here in Downtown Ithaca, at our original Dewitt Mall location, creating delicious, innovative menus and writing cookbooks with a healthy focus. We’ve featured farm-to-table, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and fresh fish since we began, so folks describe us as true pioneers. The secret? We cook food we love to eat, and the restaurant wins awards because it offers comfort and freshness. The kind of fresh where our menu changes at every meal based on the season. Our newest cookbook, “Moosewood Restaurant Favorites” showcases 250 of our best-loved recipes. It’s coming out in Fall 2013 so you can celebrate Moosewood’s 40th right in your home kitchen. Visit us on our Facebook page to order your copy, or just stop by and say hello to find out what’s cooking today.

has more restaurants per capita than New York City. It’s a delicious statistic that tells us Ithacans are passionate about food. Cornell and Ithaca College are partly responsible. The schools attract an adventurous audience of worldly palates, giving chefs carte blanche to create bold, inventive menus. Stir in a healthy portion of fresh ingredients from nearby farms and you get local cuisine that measures itself by global standards. The New York Times noticed in 2008, calling Ithaca a “gastronomic oasis.” But taste for yourself. Bon appétit.

Pick your pleasure: lakeside, countryside, near campus or right downtown. And for those who prefer more adventurous escapes, there are campgrounds, tent sites and even yurts if you’re so inclined. So rest easy, you’re in Ithaca.
Ithaca’s eclectic style is reflected in our amazingly diverse lodging options. Practical hotels, unique B&Bs, eco inns, even luxury cabins–in Ithaca, where you stay reflects who you are. That’s part of the fun. Michael Casper, an entrepreneurial hotelier and restaurateur, recently opened Private Hotel and Pure Food, a small boutique hotel on 115 acres just outside downtown. Fusing post, beam, pole, log and contemporary architecture the property embodies sensitive and sophisticated style. Interiors are an eclectic combination of rustic and refined, with comfortable common areas accented by Michael’s sense of whimsy. A chef in his own right, Michael lavished attention on the chef ’s private kitchen where he creates and prepares from a magnificent menu of organic and vegan foods that are primarily locally grown and harvested. Private Hotel and Pure Food appeals to the individual who desires high end appointments, the finest in bedding and linen, and the world’s freshest and healthiest food – all provided in a serene, tranquil environment. literally, by the Visitors Bureau Staff Yes, this very book. We wrote it. Now, we’re not claiming to be know-it-alls, but we’re pretty popular in these parts. People know us. And they call us from all over–Canada, New York City, San Francisco–to ask where the hot spots are. Or where to stay, hike or eat.
Local Knowledge When you travel, nothing beats local knowledge. At the Visitors Bureau, we’re here to help, online, on the phone, and in person. Have questions? We’re ready with answers.
