Lovingly known as “Dr. Bob,” Dr. Robert Smith is nationally recognized for his leadership in founding the Medical Committee for Human Rights during Freedom Summer of 1964, and is one of Mississippi’s great healthcare heroes. Equally a lover of the arts and music, the lyrics of “This Little Light of Mine” spark childhood memories of attending his grandfather’s church and being encouraged at a young age by a song that buoyed a generation through the Freedom Movement. “My grandfather would get up in the church and yell and sing, ‘Oh, this little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine!’ And I would just fall out,” Smith says. “He would tell me, ‘Boy, keep on living.’”

“My grandfather would get up in the church and yell and sing, ‘Oh, this little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine!’ And I would just fall out,” Smith says. “He would tell me, ‘Boy, keep on living.’” A native of Terry, Mississippi, Smith knew he wanted to become a doctor early on, recognizing the need for change in the world. One of his formative moments was when his aunt and uncle gifted him a book containing famous African Americans. “Only about 20 people were listed for the whole country at the time,” he says. One was Dean Dixon, the famed American orchestra conductor who was the first Black person to play for the New York City Orchestra. He inspired Smith to take up piano. As a teenager, his pursuit of music turned back into a hobby after learning and performing “Clair de Lune” for his high school. “When I walked off the stage, they said, ‘Oh, he’s got great talent.’ I said, ‘Oh, hell no,’” he laughs. “That was the last of that. I was going to become a physician.” 10

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE | 2024 TOUR GUIDE

“If somebody was coming to Jackson, what would I tell them? If they are healthcare, we have some of the greatest healthcare institutions in the country, both primary and secondary.”

Smith earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Tougaloo College and his MD from Howard University College of Medicine. After completing clinical training at Cook County Hospital, he was asked to return to Mississippi as a general practitioner by the U.S. Army due to a period of national conscription amid the Berlin Crisis of 1961.

During this time in Jackson in the 1960s, a few years before Freedom Summer, Smith formed a friendship with civil rights organizer and the NAACP’s first field officer, Medgar Evers, alongside other civil rights leaders. Together, they worked towards equality. It was through these interactions that Smith felt a more permanent calling back to Mississippi to serve underprivileged and disenfranchised Black communities who were often turned down at area clinics and hospitals. 2024 TOUR GUIDE | THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE

11

“How do I carry my light? I go by my motto: keep it simple.” A civil rights leader in his own right, Smith provided medical services for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Selma-to-Montgomery march. His medical committee went on to instigate change in healthcare institutions across the South, expanding access to fair and equal health services for African Americans. Smith’s care and compassion have since touched thousands of lives through teaching and treatment, and he still practices in Jackson to this day. “If somebody was coming to Jackson, what would I tell them? If they are healthcare, we have some of the greatest healthcare institutions in the country, both primary and secondary,” Dr. Smith said.

He wants to continue bringing Black doctors back to the state to prove that Mississippi can stand toe-to-toe with the best in national healthcare. As President and Chief Executive Officer of Mississippi Family Health Center, Ltd., he’s shining the way for future minority physicians to become leading doctors. “How do I carry my light? I go by my motto: keep it simple,” Smith said.

MUSIC SCENE A CONVERSATION WITH

BOBBY RUSH

16 THIS THISLITTLE LITTLELIGHT LIGHTOF OFMINE MINE| |2024 2024TOUR TOURGUIDE GUIDE

A proud Jacksonian since the early 1980s, bluesman Bobby Rush, a venerable musician, performer, and blues icon, is known internationally for his soulful, funky, and modern take on Southern blues. From his recordings for the Jackson-based LaJam Records to his lively and often provocative live shows, Bobby isn’t afraid to reinvent people’s perceptions of his genre and adopted hometown. “Where we were, where we are, and where we should be—it’s just a matter of time, because Mississippi is on the rise,” Bobby said. “If you’re out there thinking Mississippi’s on the left side of the field, come down; we’ll show you. We eat well, we dance well, and we play the blues well. And we have fun.”

Music was a part of Bobby’s life from an early age, down to a spiritual level. His father was the pastor of two churches, imbuing his young world with hymn and gospel singing. Born Emmett Ellis, Jr., in Homer, Louisiana, he eventually took the stage name “Bobby Rush” in deference to his dad. He remembers how “This Little Light of Mine,” an anthem that buoyed much of the Freedom Movement, continued to inspire him into his adult years. “As a man, a blues singer, a gospel listener, and a Black man, there’s deep meaning behind ‘This Little Light of Mine,’” Bobby said. “We all shine because we want other people to see what we are doing, hoping that we can draw people into our realm of life. That’s why I want everybody to know Mississippi [and Jackson] got it going on. And it’s been here all the time.”

When shining a light on his Jackson community, Bobby sidelines politics to focus on the positives and his craft: playing and teaching the blues. “The blues and gospel music is the root of all music,” Bobby said. “It’s the mother of all music, and it started right here in Mississippi. If you don’t like the blues, you probably don’t like your mama.”

“If you don’t like the blues, you probably don’t like your mama.”

Mississippi Book Festival Hot Fest Cool Down 2023

In the early days of playing juke joints across the nation, Bobby became used to running into Mississippi naysayers, an issue that still arises today. He is the first to champion Jackson, particularly in regard to the diverse talent it produces, from music to the arts to the culinary world. “I’m telling you now—Mississippi got something to offer,” Bobby said. “It’s a lesson you can learn. We have a gift to do what we do, and we do it well. My motto is, ‘Do all I can, while I can.’ When it comes a time I can’t, I won’t live with regrets. I’m taking the opportunity to set it straight, about Mississippi and Jackson.”

His latest album, “All My Love For You,” a storyteller’s account of life, love, and relationships, is up for Best Traditional Blues Album at the 66th Grammy Awards, his seventh nomination and potentially third win. As someone with 70+ years of recording, 419 records, and multiple accolades under his belt, you’d think he’d be slowing down. You would be mistaken.

The “king of the chitlin’ circuit” is still thriving and creating his signature “folk-funk” blues, mentoring hopeful up-and-coming musicians, and advocating for Jackson as a top blues and music destination. “If you got a good song and keep doing what you’re doing and you do it well, someone’s going to fall in line with you,” Bobby said. “I want to promote all our visitors and blues lovers coming here. You’ll be surprised by what you see, what you gain, and what you learn from old men like myself. We welcome you to Mississippi.”

JXN’S CULINARY SCENE: CHEF NICK A CONVERSATION WITH

WALLACE

2024 TOUR GUIDE | THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE

27

Chef Nick Wallace isn’t afraid to push the boundaries of his craft. A bornand-bred Mississippian, he is cooking up new ways to serve Southern cuisine while paying homage to Jackson’s storied, vibrant, and complex history. Originally from Edwards, Mississippi, Nick grew up on rural farmland, with his family using much of the fresh produce grown in the soil outside their house in their daily cooking. Watching his grandmothers, Queen Morris and Lennel Donald, work in the kitchen inspired Nick to pursue the culinary arts, and he has since become one of the state’s most recognized and awarded chefs. Nick has placed Jackson on the national culinary stage through numerous media outlet and Food Network appearances, including Comfort Nation, Cutthroat Kitchen, Chopped (Winner, Season 34), and competing on Top Chef. With a steadily growing restaurant and catering empire, he’s evolving what it means to cook with soul in his city.

Tyrone, Tyrea, and Greta Bully, Owners of Bully’s Restaurant

“WE’RE ALL TRYING TO COOK THE BEST AND WE WANT TO BE THE BEST. THAT FIRST BITE? IT’S GONNA LIGHT YOU UP.” 28

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE | 2024 TOUR GUIDE

“Before she passed, my grandmother emphasized the importance of maintaining your voice in your cooking,” Nick said. “Working in Jackson, I’ve found that soul food often gets stereotyped. I love soul food, but my goal is to also try and break those stereotypes. I want to open people’s eyes to what being an African American chef in Mississippi means and how we can cook a variety of foods—foods that rely on preservation and our past.” Nick recognizes that much of the origins of Southern foodways lie within the complicated histories of slavery and the Civil Rights movement, with foods aiming to nourish during times of survival. The creativity of coaxing flavors from limited resources has fueled Jackson’s creativity in restaurants—and beyond.

“I believe the Freedom Movement serves as our anchor and guide in Jackson; if not the food itself, then it’s a building that you want to turn into a restaurant,” Nick said. “We feel a deep connection to those backstories behind so many of our public spaces. The attachment to the Freedom Movement is unmissable, even in something as simple as a street name. Every corner, whether in South Jackson, West Jackson, or elsewhere, is intertwined with its legacy. That’s one of the things I love and respect about our city.” At his restaurant, Nissan Café by Nick Wallace, located at the Two Mississippi Museums, Nick has taken the stories from the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and infused them into his menu as a homage to those who lit the way for himself and so many others. “I appreciate our museums because they don’t shy away from hard truths; instead, they offer a platform to use them as building blocks for the future,” Nick said. “Our state’s history has inspired my creations, particularly my Mississippi gumbo, which I never would’ve thought to serve had I not been surrounded by these stories. They propel us forward, especially when we understand their significance.”

“HERE, YOU’LL SEE SO MANY DIFFERENT REFLECTIONS OF A THRIVING CULINARY SCENE.” In his latest move as a leader of the inaugural Jackson Food & Wine Festival, Nick is looking forward to showcasing the city’s diverse food scene—including Asian, Indian, Jamaican, African, French, and more—to incoming chefs from around the nation. “Jackson is a beautiful mixed bag, and I don’t want to hide away from our stories,” Nick said. “I can use those stories to build my future. I can use them to build my service. I can use them to build my food.” Tempted to learn more about JXN’s culinary scene? Hurry, scan this QR code.

Downtown Jackson played a pivotal role in the Freedom Movement of the 1960s, serving as a significant battleground for equality. The FARISH STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT was a focal point for activism and protest, with local leaders like MEDGAR EVERS and organizations such as the NAACP spearheading efforts to challenge segregation and discrimination. A notable Freedom Movement event was the Freedom Riders’ stop at the GREYHOUND BUS STATION in 1961, where activists challenging segregation were met with violence and where heroes like HEZEKIAH WATKINS were made. This pivotal moment underscored Jackson’s significance in the broader struggle for civil rights. 2024 TOUR GUIDE | THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE
