Having a 90th birthday is a major milestone. The historic Tennessee Theatre reaches nine decades in October 2018, having created cherished memories for countless guests over the years. We look forward to celebrating this anniversary, but let’s first look back on the Theatre’s history. Opening October 1, 1928, the Tennessee Theatre was built to impress. Movie palaces -- dripping with crystals, wrapped in velvet, and glittering in gold -- were all the rage in the flapper era, designed to make patrons feel like royalty from the moment they entered. A quintessential flapper girl, Clara Bow, was the first actress to grace the Tennessee’s silver screen in “The Fleet’s In.” The house band Don Pedro and his Melody Boys also entertained that day, and Ms. Jean Wilson played the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Thousands more movies followed, such as a week-long screening of Disney’s first feature-length animation, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” entertaining 70,000; and a world premiere of “So This

is Love,” honoring Knoxville’s own Grace Moore. There were live performances, too, by cowboy star Tom Mix, Broadway legend Helen Hayes, jazz great Glenn Miller, and the original funny girl, Fannie Brice. The screening of “To Kill A Mockingbird” in April 1963 held special significance: it was the first time African-Americans were allowed to attend the Tennessee Theatre. Prior to then, like many places in the South, the theatre was segregated. Peaceful protestors changed the course of history on that memorable spring day. The Tennessee Theatre experienced hard times in the 1970s, when its opulence fell out of fashion and modern multi-screen theaters ran more efficiently. Hope came from a radio broadcaster, Jim Dick, who loved the dilapidated Theatre enough to purchase it in 1981 and save it for future glory. Dick Broadcasting operated the theatre during a time of transition from a movie theater to a live performance venue. In 1996, Tennessee Theatre ownership was transferred to a

nonprofit organization tasked with preserving and transforming the space to ensure its use for many decades to come. The nonprofit embarked on an ambitious campaign to fully restore and renovate the historic landmark, a project that cost almost $30 million and took 19 months to complete. Since reopening in 2005, the resplendent Tennessee Theatre has played a central role in the revitalization of downtown by hosting 2000+ live performances from rock to classical, screening scores of vintage films, and entertaining all ages year-round. Today the nonprofit strives to serve a wide audience, enriching the lives of residents and visitors alike. Its magnificent interior and beloved sign on Gay Street have become part of Knoxville’s identity. The Theatre’s history is full of fascinating stories, too numerous to list here. KNoXVILLE COMES FULL CYCLE Knoxville has had many nicknames over the year. Marble City, Scruffy City and the Dirty South come to the minds of those who know the city well. Yes, Knoxville is a college town. It’s also a biking destination. Riders from around the world are recognizing Knoxville as an excellent destination for mountain biking. The city offers some of the most enjoyable, scenic and (for those who want it) challenging trails in the Southeast. Knoxville’s year-round mild weather is an added benefit. When trails in other regions are snowed in or just too cold, these trails provide just the fix. The fact that these trails are just minutes from downtown makes the adventure even more appealing. Just three miles from downtown, Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness boasts more than 50 miles of connected trail for all levels of cyclists. The variety of rocky and dirt terrain trails wind along the Tennessee River, deep quarries, a rock climbing area and impressive overlooks. Trails within this system range from a kid’s loop to the Devil’s Racetrack,

a professionally designed and constructed double black diamond 0.8-mile extreme downhill trail. All of these trails were built and continue to be maintained by the Appalachian Mountain Bike Club (AMBC). A new BMX Park is slated to open Spring/Summer 2018. A 10 to 15-minute drive from downtown will land you on additional trails at Fort Dickerson, I.C. King Park, Sharp’s Ridge and more. Add another 20 minutes and you’ll find winding networks of mountain bike trail along a sparkling lake at Loyston Point or a downhill park with shuttles at Windrock Park. Knoxville also serves as a great home base for day trips to regional trail systems. You can hit a variety of trails within a couple of hours, enjoy them to the fullest and have plenty of time to come back and enjoy top notch lodging, food, brew and spirits in Knoxville. For those who prefer a smoother ride, Knoxville offers more than 85 miles of greenway (all paved or composed of crushed rock) that connect cyclists to some of Knoxville’s most popular

destinations. These include the UT Campus, World’s Fair Park and the Sunsphere, the Tennessee River and Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness. Historic sites, parks, restaurants and attractions can also be found along the routes. For those who don’t have a bike of their own and want to explore the city, Knoxville has just launched a partnership with Pace, a new nationwide bike sharing service powered by Zagster, the leading provider of bike share programs for cities. This “dockless” bike system allows visitors to unlock bikes throughout the city through a simple app (see page 65 for info). Street and off-road bike rentals are also available at area bicycle shops. Knoxville’s love for biking is evident and quite possibly at an all-time high. For the love of MUSIC Knoxville is unlike any music city you may have visited before. There’s a different attitude. In Knoxville, music is about the love of music, not the business of it. And live music is everywhere -- in clubs and bars, theaters, street corners, and at festivals, which are so numerous that it seems every warm weekend has at least one. You can find great acts in every genre playing regularly in town. The Knoxville Jazz Orchestra, one of the most acclaimed and beloved jazz big bands south of the MasonDixon, has its own concert series featuring jazz legends and new stars performing with the KJO. The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Aram Demirjian, is helping bring a new energy to classical music with a series of free community shows and programs that showcase modern composers as well as traditional programs. While Knoxville musicians regularly defy labels, there are

plenty of venues that gravitate to certain sounds. At the Pilot Light, you’re likely to hear rock or experimental music that’s as cutting edge as you’ll find in New York. At Barley’s, it’s more Americana and rock ‘n’ roll. Boyd’s Jig & Reel skews toward Celtic and folk. Jazz is featured at Sweet Audrey’s and Crown and Goose. If you want to get a taste of Knoxville’s hip hop, the Birdhouse, has become the hot spot. Primarily a community space, the Birdhouse likes to host shows on occasion - typically on Friday and Saturday nights. National and international touring acts find welcome crowds at the Mill and Mine, The International and The Open Chord. Then, of course, there are Knoxville’s TWO beautiful historic theaters, The Tennessee and The Bijou, which feature major touring acts on a weekly basis. And the festivals? Rolling Stone called the annual Big Ears Festival, “arguably the classiest, most diverse festival in the country.” And New

York Times writer Ben Ratliff, said Big Ears was “for people who like hearing nuanced music in excellent theaters, in a city with no hassle.” Dogwood Arts Rhythm N’ Blooms Festival turns the lower half of downtown Knoxville into an outdoor and indoor music extravaganza. Maybe the best and quickest way to get a feel for the Knoxville music scene is by visiting the Blue Plate Special, a free daily program broadcast live from the lobby of the Knoxville Visitors Center, Mondays through Saturdays at noon on radio station WDVX. Performers range from local artists to international stars, including Bela Fleck, Ricky Skaggs and Del McCoury. The publicly funded station started in a camper trailer 20 years ago for no other reason than the founders knew it needed to exist. Speaking of hot, Knoxville is home to Tennessee’s first James Beard Award Winning Chef: Joseph Lenn. You might recognize the name from his years at BlackBerry Farm, just up the road in Walland, Tennessee. Today he operates JC Holdway, a downtown restaurant named in 2017 as one of the 12 Best in the nation by Eater.com. Lenn is actually one of several BlackBerry chefs who have opened restaurants in Knoxville. Chef Matthew Gallagher, known for Knox Mason, also operates Emilia, home to Italian inspired cuisine in a crisp atmosphere. While we are on a little international flair, it’s important to mention Kaizen, a small space with big taste. Owner Jesse Newmister is always creating something new in his kitchen. The French Market Crêperie is on the same

street (Clinch Avenue) but with a totally different feel. Here, you’re transported to Paris as soon as you open the door to savory crêpes, sweet crêpes and beignets. C’est magnifique! One of Knoxville’s newer international stars is Yassin’s Falafel House. Here, Yassin and his family, together with fellow Syrian refugees, create a loving atmosphere for many in the community. If you want a quick spicy falafel, baba ganoush or hummus, it’s one stop shopping. Yes. Knoxville has its fair share of barbecue restaurants. We’re not going to touch that one because we know that every single person has a specific barbecue style they like when they are in the south. In addition to these local restaurants, Knoxville is home to regional favorites like Babalu Tapas and Tacos, Tupelo Honey Café and FIVE – all of whom chose Knoxville because Knoxville is and always will be a foodie destination. The Spirits of Knoxville

Knoxville has established itself as a brew-friendly community - not just for locals and visitors, but for brewers themselves. The camaraderie is exactly what you’d expect in such a genuinely authentic and friendly town. Smoky Mountain Brewery, the oldest craft brewery in East Tennessee, opened in 1996 when the idea of local microbrews served fresh was, well, unpopular. Locals point to Downtown Grill and Brewery, home of Woodruff Brewing Company, as central to the downtown revival and out toward west Knoxville, Black Horse Brewery has long held down the fort. A newer generation of brewers includes Alliance Brewing, part of the outdoor scene on the south side of the Tennessee River. Balter Beerworks, Crafty Bastard and Last Days of Autumn are located downtown. Just a few blocks away, in a lavishly constructed castle (with one of the biggest biergartens in the south), Schulz Bräu specializes in traditional German beers. Craft Beer + Whiskey = a new spirit: American Single Malt Whiskey Grain, yeast and water are key components of both craft beer and whiskey, so it was only a matter of time before they got together. Whiskey, after all, is essentially the ethanol that has been extracted from beer. Not very tasty, but what if you started out with a tasty craft beer? A few years ago, craft breweries started to ask that question. The theory is that many of those delicious beer flavors will come through in the distillation process making for a more complex whiskey that may require less aging to become a tasty whiskey. The result? A new spirit: American Single Malt Whiskey. It is made in a similar fashion as Scotch, Irish Whisky and Bierschnaps - using malted barley rather than corn. Knoxville is home to two stops on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail: Knox Whiskey Works – the city’s first distillery and PostModern Distilling.

PostModern Distilling saw American Single Malt as a perfect way to collaborate with some of the local breweries. Working with Crafty Bastard Brewery, PostModern settled on a mash bill with cherry wood smoked malt. To scale the production to the quantities needed for whiskey production, PostModern enlisted the help of Marty Velas at Fanatic Brewing. PostModern receives the wash (the sweet liquid from the cooking or mashing of grain) which is then fermented at the distillery. Once fermentation is complete, what is essentially left is beer. After distillation, the collected spirit is placed in new American oak barrels to age for a period of months. The result is Knoxville’s first American Single Malt whiskey. To further the synergy between breweries and distilleries, PostModern has allowed breweries to use its leftover barrel staves and botanicals from gin to age beer. At least once a day, a visitor in Knoxville says, “I had no idea!” Their surprise may be in reference to our amazing outdoor experiences in the Urban Wilderness or the fact that we’re home to the world’s largest Rubik’s cube (a gift from Hungary after the 1982 World’s Fair), but sometimes it’s about the business and industry here, something you can learn more about in the Knoxville Chamber’s side of this guide. Knoxville is the home to many major corporations and manufacturing facilities, including Bush’s Beans. The most recent addition to the list is Lifetime Products - a manufacturer of water sport products popular on our lakes and rivers. This area is also home to a thriving boutique-to-mid-sized manufacturing and production community. In 2016, Etsy chose Knoxville as one of 13 cities to host one of their first Maker City Summits. The intention was to pair, “strong municipalities that value entrepreneurship, sustainability, and responsible manufacturing with the creative and innovative spirit of

the Etsy community . . . developing empowered micro-businesses, strengthened local economies, and collective commitments to change how we buy, sell and create goods.” The Summit was a huge success and returned in 2017.

So what does this mean to visitors? This “maker mentality” produces a wealth of experiences for visitors, some unlike you’ll find anywhere else. Take for example, Pretentious Glass Co., one of the top-selling Etsy stores in the world, located in Knoxville’s historic Old City. Only here can you watch glass blowers creating and selling artisan beer glasses, the same ones you’ll find right next door at Pretentious Beer Co. Side note: the craft brew industry is another aspect of our growing Maker City. Devoted maker spaces can be found within The Central Collective, The Hive, Modern Studio and other popular locales. Here, entrepreneurs including photographers, artists, and bakers like Dale’s Fried Pies, collaborate and create. Additionally,

the artisans at Ironwood Studios work in each of their name-sake’s materials under one roof next to the collective pottery studio, Mighty Mud. Status Serigraph, the full-service graphic design and limited-edition poster studio of Knoxville-based designer Justin Helton has been talked about on such websites as Paste Magazine, Buzzfeed and OMGposters.com. Other local businesses like Pioneer House and Striped Light manufacture printed products using antique letter press techniques. Surprised? Don’t be. Knoxville is doing what it’s always done – utilizing its artists, artisans and manufacturers to tell the story of a genuinely creative city. Whether you tour Bush’s Beans Visitor Center just up the road in Dandridge or spend an afternoon at Pretentious Beer & Glass Co. watching Matthew Cummings and his fellow artisans blowing glass, you will come away with an appreciation for this city and its makers. The dream is probably a cat free world, but instead I look for free treats and fluffy beds. My name is Daisy and I like to tell my four legged friends where to take their humans in Knoxville when they visit. I also like to warn them that we have two pigs that walk on leashes. Seriously. There’s also a cat in a basket, but I just let it go and keep walking! Knoxville has parades for dogs - Mardi Growl, Howl-O-Ween and Bark in the Park to name a few. That brings me to the parks and FREEDOM! Knoxville-based PetSafe has 7 parks all around Knoxville for big AND little dogs to roam freely. We have a bakery, River Dog Bakery, and our own boutique shop, CitiFid-O, for all the latest fashions and food.

A lot of our hotels are pet friendly (look for the cute paws in the hotel listings) and there are a lot of working dogs in some stores so lean over and say hi so they can share the hair! The patios are my other favorite part of the city, one because people are always dropping stuff, but also some of them have treats just for me! At Coolato Gelato, dogs get free gelato when we bring our families! It really is a dog lick dog world out there. I am happy to call Knoxville home.
