Abingdon Street Market, Blackpool

Abingdon Street Market has undergone an extensive refurbishment and has recently reopened as a food hall serving street food from six local independent businesses, alongside a coffee shop, a cocktail bar and a craft beer lovers bar. The Abingdon Street Market is also planning to reopen the retail units later in the year where you will be able to shop a range of products.

Seek out Festival, Ribble Valley

A brand new 3-day festival adventure, Seek Out Festival, is coming to the beautiful Gisburn Forest this July. Filled with music, arts and family-friendly activities, Seek Out Festival aims to bring an electric mix of music, and brilliant artists to perform.

Gruffalo & Friends Clubhouse, Blackpool

A world first, the new Gruffalo & Friends Clubhouse is unlike anything children have experienced before. Boasting six different zones dedicated to each of Julia Donaldson’s and Axel Scheffer’s much-loved children’s stories. It truly is a one-of-a-kind magical indoor play adventure.

Blackpool Zoo new enclosures

Blackpool Zoo has welcomed two new enclosures this year, The Big Cat facility and the Penguin Cove. Both enclosures have now re-opened after being extended, renovated and renamed to create a state-of-the-art facility.

The Tent at Lowther Pavilion, Fylde

Following the success of the community marquee for the coronation celebrations, The Lowther Pavilion have recently announced that they will be leaving The Tent up in the gardens from the 22nd July – 28th August, where they will be hosting a range of daytime and early evening activities with something for everyone. From Jazz on the grass to brass band concerts, world food evenings to wine and gin tasting, no matter the weather this summer everyone can be sure to have fun.

New Maize Maze at Ridgeway Farm, Blackpool

Growing right now at Ridgeway Farm is a field full of Maize, with over 250,000 plants that will eventually reach 8-10ft in height. Over the next few weeks, an amazing fun-filled action-packed maze will be developed for you and your family to try and conquer. Opening this July, the maze will be open right until the end of September, making it a great day out for the school holidays!

Café 1847 at Hesketh Bank, Booths, Preston

Booths are delighted to unveil their new café at Hesketh Bank: Café 1847, named after the date Booths was founded as coffee and tea merchants in Blackpool. The new café is a celebration of great coffee, expertly blended tea and delicious food, freshly made using seasonal and local ingredient and served with a warm, northern welcome.

Go Ape: Blackburn

A new Go Ape adventure course is coming soon to Witton Country Park in Blackburn. Launching this summer, Go Ape Blackburn will be the first stand-alone location dedicated for young explorers. The thrillseekers paradise will feature two of your favourite high-ropes experiences, Treetop Adventure and Treetop Adventure Plus.

THEOSCAR WINNERSOF TOURISM

Each year Lancashire businesses around the county take part in the Lancashire Tourism Awards. These awards recognise the hard work of Lancashire’s wonderful tourism and hospitality businesses and are like our very own Oscars, full of glitz, glamour and celebration.

I like Bowland Wild Boar Park because they had peacocks which scared my mum and then we got to hold a snake and that scared my daddy! They had loads of animals, like baby ducks and boars that were really cute. Oh and the fairy walk too!

I love Martin Mere where the beautiful pink flamingos live, I like the way they walk on their funny long legs and its where I got Mr Flamingo from. I wish I could go to the playground there every day, the slide goes into the sand and its fun. The bubble gum ice cream there is delicious!

FRIENDLY BEACHES TO VISIT THIS SUMMER IN

LANCASHIRE

When planning a visit to Lancashire, you’ll want to make sure that there is plenty of fun for everyone to enjoy, especially if you have a four-legged friend. Rest assured; everybody gets a warm welcome in Lancashire.

A trip to the beach is essential in summer, although some of Lancashire’s beaches impose restrictions during summer months there are still plenty of great dog-friendly beaches waiting to be explored.

If you choose to walk your dog on a beach in Lancashire this year, please remember to be a responsible dog owner and pick up after your pet. Dog walkers are also advised to follow any information notices which can be found at the beach

Bispham Beach (FY2 9JJ)

Bispham Beach, located between Blackpool North Shore and Cleveleys has been one of the UK’s top 50 dog friendly beaches in the annual guide by Vets Now. Known locally as “the Cliffs” the beach offers beautiful views along the coastline and out towards the Irish Sea. The beach is accessed via steps so unfortunately is not ideal for those with mobility problems, however the upper and lower promenades are accessible and used regularly by wheelchair users, push chair users and cyclists. No seasonal restrictions are enforced at this beach and dogs are allowed all year.

Blackpool North Beach (FY1 4QU)

Blackpool North Beach is not only pet-friendly but is also one of Blackpool’s award-winning clean beaches. Despite this, they are still happy to welcome dogs and their responsible owners, however some restrictions are in place. Until 1st May, dogs are free to enjoy the full stretch of the Blackpool coastline. However, between 1st May and 30th September, dogs are not allowed to be exercised on the beach between North Pier and the Mirror Ball, opposite the Solaris Centre. But don’t worry, dogs are always welcome throughout the year between North Pier and Anchorsholme, which is just before Cleveleys Beach.

St Annes North Beach (FY8 2RN)

Located along the Fylde Coastline between Lytham St Annes and Blackpool, St Annes

North Beach is popular with families, kite flyers and dog walkers. A range of facilities including shops, cafes and takeaways can be found in the small town of St Annes, just a short stroll from the beach.

St Annes North Beach does have some restrictions in place, dogs are not allowed in the section between old pier and the cinema from May 1st – September 30th. However, dogs are allowed all year beyond the Northern end of the promenade.

Lytham St Annes Beach (FY8 1SJ)

Located between the mud flats of the Ribble Estuary and the bright lights of Blackpool, Lytham

St Annes is just one of Lancashire’s classic seaside resorts. Although we can’t always guarantee the sun will make an appearance, you can be sure to find a Victorian pier which dates back to 1885, an iconic windmill and miles of golden sand. Dogs are allowed on the beach all year around, however there is a seasonal ban for the central section of this beach which is located between the lifeboat station and the pier. This seasonal ban runs annually from Good Friday – 30th September.

Fleetwood Beach ( Marine Beach) (FY7 6RA)

Marine Beach is the seaside part of Fleetwood seafront and is located near Marine Hall. You can expect to see sandy beaches, seafront pathways and pretty beach huts. There are some restrictions in place on this beach which you should be aware of prior to visiting.

Dogs are not allowed in parts of the beach, this is in force from the East side of the slipway opposite Promenade Road, eastward to the west side of the former Fleetwood Pier site. These restrictions are in force from 1st June – 31st August.

However some sections of the beach are pet friendly, including from the Ferry and RNLI and along the Esplande to the other side of former Fleetwood pier. Another popular route with dog walkers is from the Kite Club which is opposite the Mount, past the boating lakes and down to Rossall beach.

Heysham Sands (Half Moon Bay) (LA3 2XY)

Half Moon Bay stretches from the wall of Heysham Harbour up the coast to the Heritage Centre at Lower Heysham. This small yet beautiful beach has views across Morecambe Bay and towards the Lakeland Fells. Closer to the area you will be able to discover numerous archaeological sites including St Patrick’s Chapel and some stone graves which were once used for the cover of an album by Black Sabbath.

Half Moon Bay Beach, which is also known as Heysham Sands, is dog friendly and allows dogs all year round.

Silverdale Beach (LA5 0TP)

Situated within Morecambe Bay and Arnside and Silverdale AONB, Silverdale beach is a small and quiet beach in Lancashire. The perfect place for a peaceful walk this summer.

Silverdale Beach is dog friendly and allows dogs all year round, however it is recommended for you to stay close to the shore where you have plenty of sand and rock pool to explore as the Bay can have some dangerous areas with the mud and fast tides.

Rossall Beach (FY5 1JD)

Located to the North of Blackpool and close to Cleveleys, Rossall Beach is dog friendly all year round. Although the pebbly beach isn’t classed as a bathing beach, this small beach is popular with many dog walkers, it’s also a great place to watch the sunset and admire the fabulous views of the Lancashire coastline.

1. Greatest Days, Clitheroe

Release June this year, Greatest Days in the latest film to star Lancashire. Featuring the streets of Clitheroe, Clitheroe Market and its dominating Castle, in the scenes where the main characters grow up.

2. Andor, Cleveleys Seafront

Calling all Star Wars fans! If you look closely in Episode 7 of Disney + Star Wars series Andor (2022), you might recognise that beach resort, as it was all filmed on Cleveley’s promenade.

3. The Kings Speech, Queen Street Mill, Burnley

This old cotton mill, now a museum, was once a huge part of the cotton industry in Burnley. Making it the perfect place for Colin Firth as young King George VI to attempt to address mill workers in a speech.

4. The Bay, Morecambe

With season 5 just announced, The Bay has been a huge success and stars many spots across Morecambe and its surrounding areas, look out for The Midland Hotel, the Police Station and of course Eric Morecambe’s statue.

5. Peaky Blinders & Brassic, Bacup

Not only did Peaky Blinders transform Lee Quarry in Bacup into a traditional gypsy camp for season six, the TV series has featured Beacon Fell and Ashton Memorial. Bacup also features regularly in the Sky series Brassic, as it forms the fictional town of Hawley where the main characters live.

6. A Monster Calls, Rivington

The Rivington countryside was perfect for shooting the rural scenes required for 2017 fantasy film A Monster Calls with Rivington Pike featuring in the film. The film also shows scenes from Preston and Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

7. Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children, Blackpool

Tim Burton’s fantasy film, based on a young adult book, took over the promenade in 2015 for filming, with stars including Samuel L Jackson and Eva Green. The towns iconic tower and promenade feature heavily in the film and its trailer.

8. Brief Encounter, Carnforth

One of Lancashire’s older film location spots, Carnforth train station was the backdrop of the main characters’ encounter. The train station remains mostly unchanged, with the film’s refreshment room open for visitors to grab a bite to eat themselves.

9. Paddington 2, East Lancashire Railway

Since 1986 Fleetwood Festival of Transport, known locally as Tram Sunday, has been bringing vintage vehicle displays to the seaside town of Fleetwood. With classic car, buses and tram displays, entertainment, fairground rides, food stalls and more, this is a great day out for the whole family. This year the event will be made extra special with an 18ft inflatable whale, complete with visit and talk from marine biologist and children’s theatre show, inside the whale itself!

Celebrating its 11th Year the Clitheroe Food festival will end a week long series of events focusing on food and drink throughout the borough. One of the longest running air shows in the country, Blackpool Air Show has been running for over 100 years. This free event on the seaside town’s promenade fills the streets and this year the world-famous Red Arrows will be opening the show on both days, with the RAF Typhoon team closing each day too. The show attracts a range of stalls, attractions and food concessions, with fairground rides and more within the Air Show village on The Tower Festival Headland.

Expect performance, dance, classic cars, mobile vintage cinemas, DJ sets, fashion parades, family workshops and street food. This year will be even bigger and better as the festival celebrates a decade of celebrating all things vintage.

HISTORY COMES ALIVE AT WWT MARTIN MERE

Ever wondered how our ancestors made clay? Or what materials were used for clothing, shelter and everyday items? How charcoal was made?

As part of the ‘Drawn to Water’ trail at the popular Burscough wetland centre, families are being invited to take a step back in time and find out more about how wetland materials were used. Go foraging for wetland materials, and have a go at making a medieval lucet cord, willow weaving, and even weapons training to defend the village.

Wetlands have long been considered one of nature’s most diverse ecosystems, teeming with life and offering a wealth of resources. Humans utilised rushes, sedges and cattails to create durable mats, baskets and more, creating functional objects out of raw materials. They even made boats out of reed!

Wetlands offered an abundance of food – from wild rice harvested by Native Americans, to cattail shoots used in Asian cuisine. Some were even used as medicine, like the marsh mallow, a wetland herb used to treat wounds and soothe inflammations.

The Haworth Art Gallery is the perfect place to while away a few hours in the heart of Lancashire. A whole country house designed in the arts and crafts style full to the brim of art inspired by nature, and a whole exhibition dedicated to Joseph Briggs and his amazing collection of Tiffany Glass. In the historic stables and motor house you can find local Artist Studios where skilled craftspeople sell their wares so you can take a little bit of Lancashire home with you.

Outdoor art

On those super sunny days, it’s good to know that you don’t have to hide away from the sunshine to enjoy art in Lancashire. With Cleveleys’ Mythic Trail, Morecambe’s Tern Project and Pendle’s Sculpture Trail, you can enjoy art and the great outdoors together. Longitude Gallery

At this independent art gallery you will find beautiful pieces of art available to view and buy, with a large selection from local artists, allowing you to take a little Lancashire home with you. Each month the Gallery holds a Saturday session where you can hear from an artist about their inspirations and designs and take part in a practical workshop where you can learn about creating art the artists style.

Queen Street Mill

With Lancashire strong industrial past, you can’t go far without seeing evidence of the times when the streets rang with millworkers’ chatter and the sounds of clogs on the cobbles. At Queen Street Mill you can join a guided tour of one of the buildings that was integral to the areas industry, and discover what life was like as a cotton mill worker.

Showtown Museum

Blackpool’s Showtown Museum will be the latest addition to the county’s museums when it opens next year, but visitors during this summer can enjoy pop up events from the museum ahead of its highly anticipated opening.

Clitheroe Castle Museum

The award-winning Clitheroe Castle Museum tells the story of the historic market town and the Castle itself. From local industry and heroes to folklore and legends, the exhibits, touchscreen animations, and sound points make it a shared experience for everyone to enjoy. After visiting the museum, make sure to climb to the top of the castle for stunning 360 degree views.

Stonyhurst Museum

Open only certain days of the year, and located within Stonyhurst College’s magnificent Grade I listed building, the Stonyhurst Museum, dating back to 1609, offers people the chance to explore the oldest museum in the English-speaking world. The museum holds the first folio of Shakespeare, prayer books belonging to Mary, Queen of Scots, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s school reports and more.

The British Commercial Vehicle Museum

Submerge yourself in the sounds, smells and sights from a bygone era. In this sensory experience you can hear the real stories of factory workers, drivers and inventors whose innovations shaped the lives of everyone. The museum charts the history of commercial vehicles since the 1800s and is housed in the original inspection building of Leyland Motors.

Judges Lodgings

What better way to get to know the historic city of Lancaster than to visit its oldest town house? The Judge’s Lodges was once home to the travelling Red Judges of the Assizes Courts who decided the fate of murderers, forgers and highwaymen at the nearby Lancaster Castle. The museum now houses a collection of Georgian Furniture by Gillows of Lancaster and the popular Museum of Childhood.

Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery

Impressing visitors since it opened in 1874, this summer will be no different, even while undergoing a few repairs. The museum has a great programme of events, including regular Saturday craft sessions for children, plus visitors can find out so much about the rich history of the cotton industry, explore the skill and labour area and view the museum’s impressive collection of taxidermy birds.

THINGS TO DO BEFORE THE SUMMER HOLIDAYS ARE OVER

This summer we are inviting you to complete the ultimate kids summer bucket list. Try and tick off as many of the things below before you go back to school. Each and every one can be done in spots around Lancashire during your visit to our fantastic county. What are you waiting for?

The Hill - Ski Rossendale

1. FLY A KITE – We have kite festivals up and down our coast, but Lancashire also has hills and plenty of fun open spaces for you to test your skills.

2. BUILD A DEN – We have so many great places to explore and build dens in the woods and forests, Brockholes in Preston often holds den making events so be on the lookout for those.

3. SLEEP IN NATURE – there’s nothing like waking up to the sounds of nature, and camping is so much fun, choose from a countryside site like Royal Umpire Holiday Park near Croston or a coastal retreat like Red Bank Farm overlooking Morecambe Bay.

4. LEARN ABOUT LANCASHIRE’S HISTORY – visit one of our local museums to learn more about the history of the area, some ideas can be found on page 71.

5. SCAVENGER HUNT – Ask your adults to create a special scanvenger hunt of things or places that you can find in the area you’re visiting. This can be a great way of finding new spots and learning about nature or the area around you.

6. GO ON A BUG HUNT – Why not head along to Mere Sands Wood to discover the bugs that call Lancashire their home. You could also spot a bird or two!

7. GO ROCK CLIMBING – From Anglezarke Quarry to Witches’ Quarry there are plenty of fantastic climbing spots in Lancashire, but if actual rocks aren’t on the agenda yet, why not start your bouldering adventure at PrestonWall Climbing Centre.

8. SKIM A STONE – A simple yet enjoyable past time, enjoy a visit to one of our many lakes to skim a stone or two and see who in your family can skim theirs the most!

9. HIT THE SLOPES – Give skiing or tubing a try at The Hill in Rossendale, which celebrates 50 years of outdoor skiing this summer.

12. GO BAREFOOT – Walking barefoot helps get in touch with nature. Why not go for a walk on the beach at Morecambe and feel the sand between your toes.

13. GO ROCK POOLING – in North Lancashire you can find the beautiful Silverdale Cove, one of the best places to go rock pooling whilst admiring the view across the Bay.

14. GO WILD SWIMMING – Wild swimming is great to boost your brain power! And thankfully there are lots of places to enjoy the water safely in Lancashire, Wyresdale Park have weekly wild swimming sessions to join in with!

15. GO ON A NIGHT TIME NATURE WALK – Hedgehogs, bats, moths, owls, foxes… so many animals wander at night, why not go see what you can see or hear? Brockholes have a family bat walk to join in with.

16. GIVE ORIENTEERING A GO – at Gisburn Forest you can test your map reading skills with a permanent course in Birch Hill.

17. HIT THE WATER – Choose from a range of water sport activities, including paddleboarding, rowing boats, canoes and pedalos at Fairhaven Lake in Lytham St Annes.

18. WATCH THE SUNSET – As the sun sets in the West, our coast is one of the best places to catch the sunset. Head to the hills on Heysham’s coast for a truly stunning place to enjoy the end of the day.

19. LEARN ABOUT ANIMAL CONSERVATION – Visit Blackpool Zoo to learn more about the animals that they help from across the world.

20. PLAY TORCH TAG – Get outside in the dark and play torch tag, run from hiding spot to hiding spot and try and shine your torch on your friends and family, while avoiding their torches too.

21. PAINT ROCKS – The rivers by Clough Mines in Rivington are perfect for picking up a rock or two to take home and paint. You could even decorate them then leave them in places for others to find and re-hide

22. GET ON YOUR BIKE – We have so many great cycling routes in Lancashire, including the Heritage Cycle Route in Burnley where you can discover stories of life in the past from the area.

23. BUILD A SANDCASTLE – Our beautiful beaches are the perfect spot for a sandcastle. Head along to Morecambe’s west shore for a great sandcastle building spot.

24. APPRECIATE ARTWORK IN NATURE – From the Mythic Coast in Cleveleys to the Pendle Sculpture trail in the shadow of Pendle Hill, there are lots of great outdoor artwork trails in the area for you to explore

25. CATCH A SHOW – Our theatres often have great family friendly shows for you to enjoy during your visit, including the fantastic Duke’s Outdoor Theatre which allows you to roam around Williamson Park in Lancaster watching the actors perform

TRAVEL THE LANCASHIRE CANALS

Lancashire is lucky enough to have both the Lancaster and Leeds Liverpool Canal running through it’s towns and countryside, making it not only the perfect place for exploring on a sunny summers day but a great way to travel around the county.

The beauty of Lancashire’s canals is the every changing view as you leisurely cruise, walk or cycle along them. Popular activities in the summer months include boating, fishing, and even coastal walks, before making a stop off at a nearby pub.

Lancaster Canal

With views of the Silverdale Coast, the Forest of Bowland AONB and the rolling countryside of Wyre, it’s no surprise that the Lancaster Canal is a haven for wildlife. The gentle waterways and the flat footpath, (which stretches for over 27 miles!) make an ideal place for a peaceful escape this summer. The unique thing about the Lancaster canal is that it is the longest lock-free stretch of a canal in the country, with an amazing 41 miles without locks!

A great place to stop off when you are visiting the Lancaster Canal is Barton Grange Garden Centre, home to Lancashire Tourism Awards Visitor Attraction of the Year, The Flower Bowl Entertainment Centre.

With an all-weather plant area, an award-winning farm shop and a range of exciting activities under one, grasscovered, roof, there’s something for all ages to enjoy. Afterwards be sure to fuel up in one of the four different onsite eating and drinking options.

Lancaster Castle

A popular stop-off for many visitors in Lancaster is the historical Lancaster Castle, it really is a must-visit if you are in Lancaster this summer. With 1,000 years of history, this Grade I listed building is located on a hilltop location in the city centre and provides the perfect opportunity for you to discover more about the dark past.

Market towns– Garstang

Shop local in the market towns. The area of Garstang is brimming with historic architecture, including a 15th century barn, canal basin and aqueduct. There’s also a range of local businesses including riverside cafés, pubs and restaurants where you can enjoy some delicious food. But that’s not all, the Lancaster canal also passes through several other market towns including Carnforth, Scorton and Preston.

Leeds and Liverpool Canal

Originally invented to carry woollen goods and limestone from Leeds to Skipton, the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is an amazing 125 miles long! Due to the length and the complexity of this route, the canal took 46 years to be built. Because of this, you may notice that the engineering on the canal is very different to others. However, what was once created as an industrial highway is now a must-see for many visitors when they visit Lancashire in summer.

If you are visiting Burnley soon, keep an eye out for the river Brun which is the shortest river in Britain!

Rufford and Burscough

Rufford Old Hall is a great place to explore after a canal side walk. The Tudor house is located right next to the canal and has a range of footpaths which will take you around the surrounding gardens. It is also located close to WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre, home to a variety of wildlife, adorable animals and several family-friendly activities.

Mere Sands Wood Nature Reserve –

Covering 100 acres of land, Mere Sands

Wood Nature Reserve is a great place for wildlife spotting with deer, squirrels and foxes often visiting the woodland areas of the reserve. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal pass the reserve making it a convenient stop off, with pretty locks, old bridges and beautiful surrounding countryside views.

The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through many of Lancashire’s market towns including Chorley, Blackburn and Burnley, making it easier than ever for you to show your support some of Lancashire’s local businesses.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP

By Road

The M6 runs right through Lancashire connecting to the M61, M65, M55 and several major A roads. In less than an hour’s drive from Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds you could be exploring the vast Pennine Fells, beautiful Ribble Valley or driving along the world famous Blackpool promenade.

By Water

If you’re lucky enough to travel by water then both the Lancaster canal and Leeds-Liverpool canal give you the chance to sail right into the heart of places like Lancaster, Garstang and Burnley, whilst you’ll also get amazing views of our stunning countryside and wildlife on route.

By Rail

Lancashire has excellent rail connections from all over the country – just two hours from London on the West Coast Line with Avanti West Coast with stations at Preston and Lancaster. Change at Preston to reach the towns of Clitheroe, Burnley, Blackburn, Colne and Ormskirk. There are also direct trains traveling from Manchester to most Lancashire towns and cities.

By Air

Both Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport have frequent flights serving Europe and international airports including Beijing, Hong Kong and New York. Manchester Airport has direct trains to many Lancashire destinations every 30 minutes and it’s less than an hour’s drive from Manchester to Preston.

By Bike

Bring your bike to Lancashire (or hire one when you get here) and appreciate the variety of terrain and breath-taking views. You can pick up hire bikes from a number of railway stations including Morecambe, Blackburn, Preston and Ormskirk, all at reasonable prices.
