Beautiful breakaways in the

Ribble Valley Whether you’re looking to escape to a cosy farm cottage in stunningly beautiful countryside, to sample delicious pub food accompanied by a pint of real ale or if you fancy more of a luxury getaway with the chance to unwind in a high quality spa then the Ribble Valley should be top of your list.

The Ribble Valley is more than just a valley as its name suggests. Scattered amongst the fells are pretty villages, market towns and hamlets; farmland falls away to open moorland as you head into the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty perfect for a gentle ramble or energetic cycle ride depending on your inclination. Pubs and inns are aplenty, together with farm shops, historic sites and rural pursuits. And if you simply want to escape we have acres and acres of countryside for you to do just that. Autumn and winter is one of the best times to visit, not only are the natural colours spectacular, but its rich picking when it comes to seasonal food with a raft of locally reared meat and game on the menu. What’s more is that pretty much all the pubs and hotels have welcoming opening fires to warm up chilly fingers after a walk (the Inn at Whitewell even has peat fires in its hotel bedrooms) so you’ll get snug and cosy in no time.

So now you’ve just the dilemma of where to stay in the Ribble Valley. Here’s some ideas to get you started.

Are you… An aspiring home chef?

In need of some tlc?

The brand new Northcote Cookery School should be top of your wish list. Positioned in the heart of the Northcote kitchen (which has held a Michelin star since 1996), the new cookery school offers an incredibly unique experience to hone new skills & dishes – ideal for enthusiastic cooks of all abilities.

Surrender and hand yourself over to the staff at Stanley House Hotel & Spa for a relaxing, rejuvenating and completely self-indulgent break. Previously a seventeenthcentury manor house the hotel has been lovingly restored and converted into a 4 star hotel with first-class rooms, stylish restaurants and a breathtaking spa.

Looking for good ghost story?

Looking for an award winning pub meal in the middle of nowhere?

The infamous Lancashire witch trials of 1612 may have happened over 400 years ago but an air of mystery still hangs over Pendle Hill. Follow the Pendle Witches Walk or take a drive through the Ribble Valley following the route the accused witches would have travelled by foot to Lancaster castle. Both Clitheroe Castle Museum and Pendle Heritage Centre have small exhibitions about the so called witches and feature on the driving trail. The award winning Assehton Arms at Downham is a good half way point to stop for lunch or the night (rooms will be available in late 2014).

Struggling to keep a golfer happy? Surrounded by 100 acres of grounds, the family run Mytton Fold Hotel & Golf complex has a challenging 18 hole par 72 golf course and a Taste Lancashire rated restaurant for après golf re-fueling. Non-golfers can seek refuge in nearby Clitheroe with its independent shops, great restaurants and weekly market.

There are few pleasures in life as good as a walk on a clear crisp day followed by a really good meal in a friendly, ‘proper’ pub with a group of friends. The award winning, and often raved about, Parkers Arms in the tiny village of Newton-by-Bowland would be our recommendation. The seasonal menu includes traditional pub food given a truly unique feel by Chef Stosie and her team. There’s no shortage of walking routes in the surrounding Forest of Bowland as the majority is open access, and the nearby Gisburn Forest Hub is a good base for off road cyclists and walkers.

360 degrees of

Preston

The city of Preston has evolved from its industrial roots into a modern and vibrant city buzzing with cultural gems, high street shopping and lively events. Just outside the city hub you’ll find everything from country house hotels and a steam railway to award winning nature reserves and stately homes. Or hop on a bike and explore Preston’s brilliant Guild Wheel cycle way, a great way to see these different urban and rural aspects. Whether you stay in the city centre or on the outskirts you’ll find a great mix of things to see and do in Preston.

Head north on the A6 and you’ll find yourself surrounded by fields in some of Lancashire’s most fertile farmland. Barton Grange Garden Centre’s Farm Shop is a must-see for its sheer variety of Lancashire produce and if you time your trip to Dewlay Cheese Shop just right you could watch these award winning cheese makers in action, as well as sampling their finest.

Head west via the dockland area, not forgetting to stop off for a ride on the Ribble Steam Railway, towards the beautifully serene Ribble Estuary, an important habitat for a range of bird and water life. Take the south side of the estuary to visit Longton Brickcroft Nature Reserve and WWT Martin Mere Wetlands Centre, whilst the north takes in the Millennium Ribble Link, the first new English canal to be built for nearly a century. This 6km linear water park, includes an arts trail and extensive footpaths.

This year A Dyer’s Journey Through Art and Fashion (27 Sept - 29 Nov) showcases Preston-born Marian Clayden’s unique and luxurious designs featuring eye-popping silk wall hangings, haute couture and stage costumes from the 1970s stage production of Hair.

Brockholes Nature Reserve with its unique floating visitor center might be one of the most popular attractions in the area but you’ll be surprised how quickly you can lose yourself (and others) in this ‘unreserved’ nature haven. Just a few miles up the road is the black and white Samlesbury Hall, complete with resident ghost, teashop, antiques center and a fascinating history to boot.

South of Preston sits the town of Leyland, famous for its truck making heritage. A vast array of vintage vehicles from horse drawn to horse powered are on display at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum. Leyland celebrates another British legend at the South Ribble Museum as well this year with the famous Royal Geographical Society collection of photographs of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition at the museum until 25 October.

Ghostly goings-on

in Lancashire...

Lancashire’s Most haunted

Huddle round the fire and uncover Lancashire’s dark side this season...

Pendle Hill and Sculpture Trail The story of the Lancashire witches is one that still evokes intrigue and mystery over 400 years later, aided by the striking natural beauty and often shadowy presence of Pendle Hill. Climb to the top for stunning views or take a stroll through the nearby Pendle Sculpture Trail which includes tributes to the accused witches.

Murder Mystery Evening Stirk House Hotel (Lancashire’s small hotel of the year 2013) near Gisburn takes a lighter approach with a 1930s murder mystery evening on 4 Oct including overnight accommodation. The hotel’s remote location in the Bowland fells adds to the atmosphere.

Night at the Museum Join Ghost Seekers at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum, Leyland from 8pm to 2am on 1 and 8 November to “experience” a night full of speculation and some surprises too. Not for the faint hearted.

Ghost Walks Galore Discover tales of mystery and murder in some of Lancashire’s most haunted towns. Join The Blackpool Ghost Walk on weekends during Sepember and October or head to Clitheroe on a Friday evening for a regular ghost walk by Top Hat Tours.

Samlesbury Hall’s most famous ghost is

Lady Doretha, who is believed to have died of a broken heart after the love of her life was cruelly taken from her. See website for regular ghost story evenings and events at Samlesbury Hall during the autumn and winter.

Towneley Hall in Burnley is said to be

haunted by several spirits including a Sir John Towneley who owned the house from 14731541, who is said to wander about the hall crying out ‘Be Warned! Lay out!’
