a grade ii listed mill transformed into an extraordinary eating, drinking & leisure destination... Almost a year on and our big idea to bring this beautiful grade II listed building back to life, and enhance the features it holds in abundance, is really taking shape. The Brewery and Beer Hall, at the heart of the whole complex, is a showcase for Bowland Beers alongside many others from respected suppliers both nationally and internationally. And the Engine Room, home to a 1910 horizontal cross-beam engine, makes an unusual backdrop for an enjoyable drink or spot of lunch. You will find at least 24 cask ales on the bar and an extensive menu reflecting the best world beer food served daily.

The existing patisserie and bakery are to be incorporated into the new Food Hall creating an exciting space for events and cinema. While the gelateria, serving a tastebud tingling array of flavours is a hit with kids and parents alike. What’s more there’s still lots of exciting developments to unveil through the summer. These include the 39-bedroomed Spinning Block Hotel and a Bistro with Art Nouveau inspired decor, home to a modern British seafood and grill restaurant.

WORLD’S FIRST TRUCK TRAIL COMES TO LEYLAND This is the first attraction of its kind, celebrating Leyland’s 100 years of truck manufacturing heritage and inspiring a future generation of engineering capability. Starting at Leyland Railway Station, follow the trail to discover 13, six foot trucks each with its own character and personality. Why not stop off at the British Commercial Vehicle Museum along the way and submerge yourself in a nostalgic environment, packed with sounds, smells and sights from a bygone era. The final truck is in the award-winning Worden Park so why not treat yourself to an artisan coffee and a tasty slice of cake. They also offer a great take out service if you fancy a picnic and want to take in the stunning

scenery that the Grade II listed park has to offer. Having enjoyed Worden Park and its 100 acres of meadows, woodland, water features and play areas, why not head back to the town centre and pop into some of the independent shops on the main street. Stay in the four-star Hallmark Leyland, (home to Norma the Leyland fire engine) and try one of the vehicle inspired rooms or if you are looking for a rustic and carefree alternative to your traditional hotel room why not try one of Samlesbury Hall’s Shepherd’s Huts. Just as luxurious but with a rural edge, toasting marshmallows on the fire pit is a treat.

SHARON JONES

HALL DIRECTOR

Q. What do you love about living and working in Lancashire?

A. Where do I start, for me a large part is the people. Whether it’s their honesty, humour or generosity, we Lancastrians know how to give a warm welcome! I also love that I can be in the hustle and bustle of the city one minute and 10 minutes later be in the middle of rolling countryside – its great to be able to get around the county so quickly!

Q. What do you do to relax when you’re not at Samlesbury Hall?

A. I’m very fortunate that I live on the doorstep of Hoghton Tower and spend a lot of time enjoying Lancashire’s fantastic countryside. I have 3 Labradors who thankfully enjoy walking as much as I do, so we’re out and about at least twice a day taking in the fantastic views. I also have great fun with my grandchildren who are my chief testers at Samlesbury Hall, whether its sampling the milkshakes at Dottie’s Wafflery or scaling the heights of the Mayflower playground.

Q. What do you tell visitors they must also see when in Lancashire?

A. The choices are endless, Samlesbury Hall is one of many amazing historic houses within Lancashire each with their own quirky stories, a favourite of mine is Hoghton Tower and the legend of the Sir Loin. For fans of the Lancashire waterways there are the canal boats where you can while away an afternoon listening to the bird and watching the changing scenery. I’m a huge champion of Lancashire’s food and drink, our coast and countryside supplies us with an amazing bounty that can be sampled in so many of the county’s award winning pubs and restaurants.

IN BLACKBURN Transport yourself back to the bell-ringers of over 350 years ago as you listen to the peal of the 10 bells still rung in the “full circle” style today in Blackburn Cathedral. See the sun stream through the 56 different panes of coloured glass in the lantern tower with its aluminium spire. Listen to the world class Walker organ at one of the cathedral’s ambitious concerts or accompanying one of the six choirs which broadcast regularly for the BBC. Despite this being one of England’s newest cathedrals it is actually one of the country’s oldest places of Christian worship. You can find out more about the building’s fascinating history by taking a self-guided or organised tour of the cathedral or by attending one of the regular concerts and services. And if you’re feeling peckish, nip into Café Northcote for delicious homecooked food & cakes. Did you know that Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery was one of the first purpose built, free museums to open outside of London in 1874. The Museum houses a rich and fascinating collection covering fine art, decorative art, Egyptology, coins, manuscripts, natural history, social history and South Asia. With over 1,000 Japanese prints, 5,000 examples of coins and money, 500 books and manuscripts and the largest icon collection outside London, you certainly won’t be short of things to see. Love shopping? Love Blackburn! The Mall shopping centre and the bright and modern Blackburn

Market offers everything you’d expect from a traditional Lancashire market but with a contemporary twist – think coffee shop, juice bar, exhibition space, live demos, visitor centre and specialist shops. Not forgetting of course all the buzzing independent shops and boutiques across the town. If live entertainment is your thing, then look no further! Blackburn has 3 local theatres bursting with live music, comedy & drama, featuring a host of famous faces & a variety to suit all ages & tastes. Thwaites Empire Theatre and Darwen Library Theatre also offer a wide range of music, plays and dance to suit everyone’s taste. Experience the great outdoors and stretch your legs in 480 acres of countryside at Witton Country Park in Blackburn peppered with pretty picnic spots, walks, nature trails, a new play area and a visitor centre providing an ideal day out for all the family. Or take in the spectacular Lancashire views with a walk up to the Jubilee Tower (referred to by the locals as Darwen Tower) on a clear day you can see as far as Snowdonia and the Isle of Man!

IN LANCASTER Start your day off with a freshly brewed coffee in Lancaster’s Coffee Quarter. Atkinsons’ Music Room in Sun Square and The Hall on China Street serve freshly ground coffee and delicious cakes. J Atkinson & Co have been coffee roasters and tea merchants since a young Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837, so you can rest assured your coffee will be no less than outstanding. Take a seat outside so you can enjoy the summer weather whilst taking in the surrounding Georgian architecture. If you want to get a real feel for one of England’s Heritage Cities then there’s no better way than visiting one of Lancaster’s museums. The City Museum is situated in the heart of Lancaster in an elegant Georgian building. Discover more about this city’s past from Roman times to the present day. Alternatively take a walk to Lancaster Maritime Museum, once the Port of Lancaster Custom House. No trip to Lancaster is complete without visiting Lancaster Castle, owned by Her Majesty the Queen (who is also the Duke of Lancaster). The castle has witnessed many famous and infamous trials over the centuries including those of the Pendle Witches in 1612 and the Lancashire Martyrs between 1584 and 1646. Did you

know George Fox, the founder of the Quaker movement, was imprisoned there for two years. Prepare to be transported back in time with a new augmented reality app as you experience the gruesome history of crime and punishment in England (almost) first hand. Join John Higgin Senior, the prison governor and lend him your ear as he unravels the unfortunate tales of the men and women caught in the iron grasp of the law. Grab some lunch at one of Lancaster’s cafes or old school pubs then head over to Williamson Park, 54 acres of beautiful parkland with enchanting walks and breathtaking views to the Fylde coast and the Lake District. Once in the park head to the Ashton Memorial a famous Edwardian Folly in the skyline overlooking Lancaster, a gift to the city from Lord Ashton. The ‘structure’ as it became known locally was a memorial to Lord Ashton’s first wife. Why not visit the butterflies in the tropical palm house or see the troop of meercats at the mini beast centre. Finish your day of exploring with a delicious picnic in the park as you watch the sunset then head to one of the beautiful boutique hotels in the city to rest your sleepy heads.

In the heart of historic Lancaster, The Toll House Inn is an ideal location for exploring the city on foot or heading out to the coast and countryside. Originally the site of the old Toll House at the gateway to the city, the imposing Victorian listed building has a wealth of architectural features inside. It’s part of Lancaster’s charm that it remains a compact city, enjoying close contact with surrounding countryside. This easy walk takes full advantage, moving from the bustle of the city centre to the leisurely pace of the canal and on to the wideopen spaces of the Lune Estuary, where binoculars and a bird book would be ideal companions. Start outside The Toll House Inn. Turn left up Penny Street, as the road branches off keep to Penny Street, then left through Ffrances Passage. Continue straight on to Dalton Square. Go through the gardens, then turn left in front of the Town Hall up Nelson Street. Enter Nelson Street car park, and at the far end, find the steps which lead up to the canal towpath.

Go right along this, swapping sides at the first bridge. Continue past the White Cross and Water Witch pubs, then change sides again. Follow the towpath, with Aldcliffe Road alongside. Where the road swings away, leave the canal, and follow the road uphill. (Beware: the road is narrow and lacks decent verges.) At the top, continue straight ahead, down Railway Crossing Lane. Follow the lane to its end, meeting the Lune Estuary Cycle Path. Go straight ahead to a stile, and turn right (Lancashire Coastal Way sign) along the embankment. Follow this for about 1.5km to Marsh Point, opposite the pub on the far bank. Turn right on a footpath flanked by trees. Cross the cycle path, and continue straight ahead. When the path forks near to the houses, take the right branch out to Willow Lane. Go right to a miniroundabout, then turn left up Westbourne Road. Follow this to the railway station.

“the bustle of the city centre to the leisurely pace of the canal and on to the wide-open spaces of the Lune Estuary...”

Just before the bridge, turn left on Station Road, past the station, then straight on to a cycle path. Meet a road, go right under the railway, and turn immediately left on a continuation of the cycle path. At an opening on the right, climb steeply through trees and past an amphitheatre to the Priory Church. Go straight on along the side of the church to a flight of steps. Descend here, then go right below the castle walls. Descend Castle Hill (with the castle gate directly at your back), then bear left down to the traffic lights. Go straight on into pedestrianised Market Street, and down to the crossroads at Horseshoe Corner to return to the starting point.

IN PRESTON There’s a rich history to Preston - we’re talking the heart of Lancashire and not just geographically - it goes far deeper than that. The Guild City has a unique charm, built over almost 1,000 years of history. Delve below the surface and you’ll find a city, immortalised by Charles Dickens and famed for making world famous fabrics. You could say Preston is a microcosm of a big city, because it has everything bigger cities have, with the ability to walk the city in a day. Wander through stunning Victorian parkland at Avenham & Miller Parks to get a taste of the city’s 500 hectares of green spaces, wildlife habitats, play areas and allotments. Sample Preston’s reputation as Lancashire’s shopping destination, appreciating awe-inspiring architecture at the same time, particularly the Victorian splendour of the Miller Arcade. From its intriguing history, fine architecture and fantastic parkland to a rich sporting heritage and bustling nightlife, Preston is inspirational. There’s no need to head off home at the end of the day with Preston’s purple flag award promising quality entertainment and a safe, vibrant night out. Its bars, pubs and clubs, theatre, dance, comedy and live music are a great draw with new and exciting events and developments happening throughout 2017 and beyond.

There’s no stopping the Eagle and Child, earlier this year the pub underwent a huge refurbishment, returning it to its former glory as a coaching inn. Five boutique style bedrooms have been created and individually furnished along with a superb orangery dining area. In true Eagle and Child style the five rooms are themed around indigenous species of owls in honour of the wildlife found in the Rossendale area - Eagle Owl, Tawny Owl, Barn Owl, Long-Eared Owl and Little Owl. Each bedroom contains stunning commissioned artwork of owls by artist Fran Giffard, as well as a beautiful feature wall that contrasts with a mixture of vibrant and muted colours and prints. All rooms have an en-suite wet room, with the suites having baths with showers. Both suites feature Juliette balconies with stunning views over

Ramsbottom. In the morning, you can listen to the birds sing as you savour the smell of a freshly cooked Lancashire breakfast or home baked pastries drifting through the balcony doors. Along with the bedrooms a new orangery dining area has been created, sit and admire views across the Irwell Valley to Holcombe whilst you enjoy a delicious meal. Rather uniquely, the green roof of the orangery is home to two bee hives, supplying honey for guests and diners. The owner, Glen, describes the food at the award-winning inn ‘quirky, seasonal and with distinct provenance to Lancashire’. Enjoy some heritage favourite dishes like the Award winning ‘Double Bomber’ cheese and onion pie, or beer battered haddock with dripping chips and mushy peas. Whatever your choice you can be assured that

O

ne of the unique things about eating out in Lancashire is that you’re very likely to be tucking into produce that was grown up the road by a family who’ve produced it for generations, and this is never truer than when you’re in the Ribble Valley. It sometimes seems that the geography of the Ribble Valley has evolved over millions of years simply for our pleasure! Who would have thought that the rich salt deposits in the soil and moorland heather would give us such fantastic tasting Lancashire cheeses and succulent meats. Its hardly surprising then that this area should have become a hub for fine and quality dining with head chefs and restaurateurs championing Lancashire providence to a national audience. At the very top is Northcote at Langho, with Chef Patron Nigel Haworth at the helm which has retained its Michelin Star since 1996. Not only does Nigel and his team make the most of local produce, they even grow most of their own fruit and vegetables in the restaurant’s kitchen garden. Gourmands should also visit the award winning, and much raved about, Parkers Arms at Newton-in-Bowland, The Freemasons at Wiswell and La Locanda Ristorante Italiano, Gisburn – who all serve up distinctive menus based on locally grown, reared or caught produce.

GET OUT & ABOUT Whether it be a short stroll down a country lane or a challenge you’re after Pendle is an area that offers you both – and everything else in between! To start you off with a guiding hand, why not try one of the 61?, yes 61! walks that are part of the annual Pendle Walking Festival , which happens from the 12th to 20th of August. Nearly all of these guided walks are free, and range from short to medium and long. A quarter of the walks are designated family friendly. This year we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Pendle Way. Even if you cannot join us for this great event, there are countless trails to explore in this part of Lancashire. The area is famous for the 400 year old true story of the Pendle Witches and there are a number of trails you can do to follow in their amazing footsteps, including the Pendle Sculpture Trail, where you can try our quiz and spot “which witch is which”. Or follow in the footsteps of the famous literary sisters on the Bronte Walk. The walk takes in the beautiful and atmospheric village of Wycoller and its Country Park. You cannot come to this part of the world and not walk to the top of one of Lancashire’s most iconic landmarks of Pendle Hill, which features as one of the walks on Pendle’s Three Peaks. You can see from the hill’s summit the stunning countryside which makes the area so popular. And many of Pendle’s towns also have a number of great Heritage Walks that feature amazing people such as Wallace Hartley, the heroic bandmaster of the ill-fated Titanic.

IN PENDLE THIS SUMMER!

If you fancy taking to two wheels instead, Pendle has a lot to offer, with cycle routes for the family, as well as some more challenging routes, including Section One of the Tour of Britain Route and the Grand Tour of Pendle Route. Pendle’s cycling clubs have also designed some routes called My Favourite Rides. If you like watching the action, as well as participating, then the Colne Grand Prix on July 26th features the top cyclists in the UK. This is the grand finale of the series. There’s also the Pedal Pendle Festival on September 24th, which features races and a number of organised rides. This is held at the Steven Burke Cycle Hub, which is a great non-traffic place for family cycling. Those seeking a different style of outdoor activity, can enjoy a quad bike experience, at Thornton Hall Farm, which also offers family time with animals, and special events for kids throughout the Summer. And if that were not enough to tempt you to visit this part of Lancashire, Pendle hosts The Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival - the biggest blues event... the biggest blues event in the country, with three days of music throughout the August Bank Holiday weekend. For more information on walking and cycling routes in Pendle, events, and where to stay go to www.visitpendle.com

3

Cartford Country Walk, Little Eccleston – Enjoy a leisurely 4 mile walk mapped out by the award winning Cartford Inn starting and finishing at the inn where you can enjoy a hearty pub meal and pint as a reward. IN BURNLEY Burnley’s rich industrial heritage has often overshadowed its impressive countryside. Look beyond the majestic hills to discover country houses, wild Pennine Moorland and an extensive forest network, thriving with wildlife. Gawthorpe Hall, an Elizabethan gem in the heart of industrial Lancashire, built around 1600, was the family seat of the Shuttleworth family for over 300 years. Inside the house you will find period rooms on display from the 1850 remodelling by renowned architect Sir Charles Barry and Pugin as well as original plasterwork ceilings, panelling and the impressive ‘Long Gallery’. Set on the banks of the River Calder, within extensive grounds, Gawthorpe Hall is now also home to the world-renowned Rachel Key-Shuttleworth textile collection. Enjoy a gentle 4-mile circular walk through woodland including the Grove Lane Plantation where you will come across a series of wooden sculptures. Why not round off your day with a trip to the theatre, Burnley Mechanics was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1986 to present the very best in entertainment, special events and activities. Since then the Mechanics have hosted some of the world’s finest talent from all realms of the performing arts. Check out their upcoming events here. If you’re attending a show why not start the evening by visiting the new Simply Classic Bistro at the Mechanics and indulge in some pre-theatre dining?

IN ORMSKIRK Discover the historic market town’s 800-year history with a visit to the 12th Century Ormskirk Parish Church. Named St Peter and St Paul, the church is one of only three churches in the country to have both a steeple and a spire. Follow in Shakespeare’s footsteps and visit one of Lancashire’s finest Tudor buildings, Rufford Old Hall, built in the 1530s. You will be wowed by the Tudor Great Hall and its beautiful furniture, suits of armour and the carved oak screen, a rare survivor from the 1500s. Stroll through Rufford’s Victorian and Edwardian gardens, only a few metres above sea level making Rufford one of the lowest lying National Trust gardens in England. Spend a truly sumptuous evening and night at the brand new Moor Hall, set within 5 acres of beautiful gardens and with lake or garden views, each of the seven rooms are individually decorated – perfect for a romantic getaway.

Ormskirk Motorfest 27th August If you’re a car enthusiast make sure you visit over the August Bank Holiday for the annual Ormskirk MotorFest, a fantastic and free family friendly motoring extravaganza which attracts thousands of visitors each year. Hundreds of classic cars, sports cars and motorcycles are on static display and many take part in parades on the town’s roads.

Ormskirk Gingerbread Festival 29th July Ormskirk has been renowned for its gingerbread for several centuries. To celebrate the historic gingerbread story of Ormskirk an annual festival now takes place where visitors can come along, pick up some treats and enjoy special markets and vintage crafts.

EVENTS & FESTIVALS We Lancastrians consider events as one of our specialities; Starting with the biggies like the UK’s biggest Walkabout theatre in Lancaster (Jul – Aug) and Blackpool’s would famous Illuminations ( Sep – Nov) down to the quirky Tractor Pulling Championships in Great Eccleston (Aug) and the downright silly Gravy Wrestling event in Bacup (Aug) there’s not much we don’t offer. Throw into the mix our award winning uberstylish Vintage By The Sea in Morecambe (Sep) and the shiny new Chorley Flower Show (Jul) and you get the picture. We could go on to mention our breezy kite festivals, nostalgic 1940s events, firework spectaculars, food and music festivals, but we think you’d be better seeing them for yourself. Look through our events and festivals guide and see what takes your fancy.

1. Wellies. Don’t forget them, optimism doesn’t always serve us well in the UK. Rain = mud, vast amounts, especially when thousands of people will be trudging through it. 2. Bring Baby Wipes. Showers at festivals are rare, so baby wipes are essential. Bottles of water are also handy for brushing your teeth. 3. Check the website beforehand, you'll find tons of info on what you can and can't take. You don’t want to be told you have to leave things behind, plus it means you won’t pack unnecessary items.

4. Always opt for a slightly bigger tent. If two of you are sharing, a two-man tent may not be ideal if you want to store all of your things in there with you. If you’re going to become a regular festival goer then it’s probably better to invest in a decent, spacious tent. 5. Don’t overpack, but do ensure you have essentials for all weather, a Pac a mac never goes amiss. Remember the car park can be quite a distance to the camping area so the last thing you want is a rucksack that weighs more than you.

Tips

for festival first timers

visitlancashire.com

6. If the line-up times are on the festival website beforehand it’s a great idea to plan your days. A bit of planning can go a long way at a festival, you won’t want to waste a single minute when you are there. 7. Camp near a landmark so you’re sure to find your tent, there’s no doubt that a lot of people will have the same tent as you. Take a flag with you or get creative and make your own. 8. Pick a rendezvous point you can head to if you become separated from friends. There’s not always signal to send a text and you probably won’t be able to hear them if they call you. 9. Beware of guy ropes though they help to keep your tent up, they become lethal once the sun sets making it very easy to trip. Don’t forget a torch, alternatively there are torch apps you download onto your smart phone. 10. Most importantly have fun, live in the moment, put the phone down and talk to new people. Make the most of the time you have there, after all that's why you went!
