Central to the drama is the stunning Ashton Memorial, from which audiences can enjoy the stunning sunset views across Morecambe Bay during the show and take in a picnic too.

Evolving over the last 500 years, from the Medieval stone tower to the distinctive Tudor building, the adapted house is now of national importance and unique in north west England. Today it still captures the spirit of those ages and displays some of the finest paintings and furniture in the region. It is also surrounded by fantastic woodland gardens perfect for picnics.

ST ANNES BEACH, ST ANNES Miles of golden sand provides the perfect picnic spot and family day out. With a Victorian pier, children’s playgrounds and ice cream parlours there is plenty to do after the sandwiches are gone.

PENDLE HILL, PENDLE Most famous for its links to the now notorious witch trials of 1612, Pendle Hill welcomes walkers and countryside enthusiasts to climb its rugged landscape and witness its stunning views across Pendle. There are plenty of places to stop for a picnic, whether you venture to the very top or not.

BEACON FELL COUNTRY PARK, GOOSNARGH A perfect place for picniclovers, the 271 acres of woodland, moorland and farmland provides plenty of pitches for everyone. Follow the woodland sculpture trail or search for wildlife, from rabbits to deer and even a spectacular array of dragonflies in the summer months!

GET OUT AND ABOUT IN

PENDLE THIS SUMMER Whether it be a short stroll down a country lane or a challenge you’re after Pendle is an area that offers you both – and everything else in between! Why not try one of the 57 walks that are part of the annual Pendle Walking Festival, from 11th to 19th August. Nearly all the guided walks are free and range in distance. Many of the walks are family friendly, including the storytelling walk at the Pendle Sculpture Trail, where you can “spot which witch is which?”. If you cannot join us for the festival most of these walks and cycle rides can be done independently and can be downloaded from the website. Those seeking a different style of outdoor activity can enjoy a quad bike experience at Thornton Hall Farm. There’s also the chance to get a closer look at the animals on the farm as well as special events for children throughout the summer. Pendle hosts The Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival - the biggest blues event in the country promising three days of music throughout the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Planning days out and short breaks when you’ve got older children can be one of the biggest challenges for families during the summer holidays. Luckily, here in Lancashire, we’ve got everything you could need from fun packed theme parks and handson museums to fascinating nature reserves and long sandy beaches. Teenagers might be notoriously hard to please, but you can tempt them to ride the UK’s first double launch rollercoaster ICON, the UK’s tallest rollercoaster The Big One or the UK’s first suspended looped coaster completely over water Infusion – all at the award winning Blackpool Pleasure Beach. It is the perfect day out for thrill seekers.

Looking for ways to wear them out? Look no further than some of Lancashire’s top adventure attractions. From monkeying around in the forest at Go Ape where the family can test their nerve by completing the Tree Top Adventure to Ski Rossendale where you can hone your skills before hitting the piste. The Lee and Cragg disused quarries in the Rossendale Valley have been transformed into a paradise for

mountain bikers and have a network of red and black graded cross-country trails. Or head indoors to Grip and Go, an action-packed climbing centre for the whole family. While you’re there you can try District A Laser Tag, where you can work together to eliminate your opponents. Level at Preston’s Guild Hall is a teenager’s dream with End of Days laser tag, crazy golf, ten pin bowling, darts and a daredevil assault course. For something a little less energetic but equally as fun, a visit to Blackpool’s Madame Tussauds is a must. Teens can get up close to their celebrity icons and new for this year Marvel Super Heroes! If music is more their scene head to Lytham Festival this July, with acts such as George Ezra and Emeli Sandé set to wow the audience. ROSSENDALE THIS SUMMER The Valley of Rossendale is an outstanding and distinctive part of beautiful East Lancashire. Set in the South Pennines, it is the perfect retreat from the pressures of daily life whether you are looking for an adrenaline fuelled escape or quiet cultural break. Adventure seekers should head to Grip & Go, an action-packed indoor climbing and activity centre for all the family in Haslingden. Scale one of the 23 walls and if you are feeling brave, attempt the Leap of Faith. There’s also roller skating and laser tag for those who prefer to keep both feet on the ground. Head over to Ski Rossendale in Rawtenstall to take to the slopes on skis, a snowboard or the super fun tubes. A quieter option is the Boo in Waterfoot. Part of the Rossendale community since 1978, The Boo hosts regular evenings of comedy and music, as well as film and cocktail nights. For little ones there is the Mini Farm Explorers toddler group at Cronkshaw Farm. Pull on your wellies and go feed the hens, goats and sheep. No visit to Rossendale is complete without a visit to Mr Fitzpatrick’s, Britain’s last temperance bar serving vintage cordials, spectacular milkshakes, floats and tasty treats.

FAMILY FUN IN ACCRINGTON The vibrant town of Accrington is full of history. From the magnificent Town Hall built in 1858 at the height of the town’s textile boom to the Victorian Market Hall, a grand building where traders sell fresh Lancashire produce. One of the most significant moments in its history was the formation of the 11th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment, known as the Accrington Pals. Taking only ten days to form a full battalion, these brave friends are being remembered as a part of a

new development of the town square. Launching in summer 2018, six benches will be installed displaying information that traces the town’s history over the past 300 years, including the story of the Pals. The square will host a number of events including a classic car rally, chocolate festival, heritage open days and the launch event on 11th August, held by The PROSPECTS Foundation as they celebrate their 20th year with a host of family-friendly activities.
