jubljana is a meeting point of cultures, nations, religions and architectural styles, and a place which brings together people from around Europe. Lying halfway between Vienna and Venice, between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, it has a relaxed Mediterranean feel and a baroque, Central European soul. Given its central position in the country, it is a perfect base for exploring the beauty and diversity of Slovenia. Ljubljana is a compact modern city full of charm and historical interest. Both locals and visitors see it as a place made to the measure of man: being the Slovenian capital, it provides big city amenities, but due to its small size, it is easily navigable and has a relaxed small-town atmosphere. The city owes much of its character to the famous architect Jože Plečnik, its native son, and its river, the Ljubljanica, which winds through the historical city centre and is spanned by numerous picturesque bridges. Visitors are impressed by the high quality of living in Ljubljana and delighted by the city’s cultural and tourism offerings. Despite growing numbers of tourists, Ljubljana remains to be a safe green city friendly to visitors. Ljubljana boasts a huge outdoor memorial, a 34-kilometre walking route known as The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship (The Green Ring), which runs along the course of the barbed-wire fence which surrounded Ljubljana during World War II and is unique in the world. The effects of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle are increasingly noticeable and the number of those participating in major sports and recreation events is larger every year.
Ljubljana essentials Altitude: 298m Population: 283,000 Area: 272.39 sq km Climate: continental, with temperatures averaging 1.5 °C in January and 21.1 °C in July Time zone: GMT + 1 hour Country code: +386 Area code: (0)1

uroBasket 2013, the largest sporting event in the history of Slovenia, will attract thousands of basketball fans and their companions. The championship title will be competed for by 24 European teams, including the Slovenian national team. Basketball being the most popular sport in the country, the whole Ljubljana will revolve around the championship. eptember will see the centrally located Kongresni trg square turned into a popular spot for basketball fans.
Throughout the championship, from 4 to 22 September, Kongresni trg will be hosting a vibrant fan entertainment zone, where those without tickets will be able to follow the championship action on a large screen. A stage set up in the square will host an extensive programme of music and entertainment and a lot of activity will also take place off-stage: a pleasant atmosphere will be created by the Kazina all-girl dance troupe; visitors will be entertained by performances from the Gledališče Ane Monro street theatre, the Pustotnik accordion ensemble, and many others; every now and then, a spectacular laser light projection will be beamed onto the façade of the Slovenian Philharmonic building. Kongresni trg will also host ‘live basketball’; the ball will be slam-dunked by the members of the acrobatic basketball team Dunking Devils. The programme of events will be particularly extensive on non-match days. It will include offerings from the embassies of the countries taking part in the championship. From morning until late at night, a wide choice of drinks and snacks will be available from seven catering kiosks.
Fans
The square’s vibrant atmosphere will spill over into the neighbouring Zvezda Park, decorated to the theme of basketball by Ljubljana’s primary school pupils. From this perfect place for sitting around in the shade of trees, it will spread throughout the city so that not only basketball fans, but also other visitors and locals will be kept in a mood of excited expectation.
Kongresni trg tourist information point Daily from 13:00 to 20:00, the Kongresni trg square will be the site of a tourist information point and ticket outlet set up in front of an opentopped double-decker, where basketball fans and other visitors to the fan entertainment zone will be able to obtain information related to Ljubljana and the EuroBasket championship, as weel as purchase tickets to city tours, boat rides along the Ljubljanica river, open-top double-decker sightseeing tours and more.

EuroBasket 2013 culinary route Not far away from the Kongresni trg square, right next to the river Ljubljanica, is the Breg embankment, a riverside promenade turned into a culinary route specially for those visiting Ljubljana during EuroBasket 2013. Daily from 14 September, its food and drink stalls will be offering traditional Slovenian food, products with protected designation of origin, and Slovenian wines for tasting and purchase. Accompanying events will include dance shows, street theatre performances, a Saturday art market, a Sunday antique flea market, and occasional art interventions. Offerings will include those provided by the embassies of the countries taking part in the championship. Beyond doubt, Breg will be a perfect place to go when you feel like taking a break from the championship. House of Sports on the Breg promenade Before the beginning of EuroBasket 2013, a sports information centre called the House of Sports opened its doors at no. 2 Breg. The centre, covering everything sports-related in Ljubljana, offers promotional materials, tickets to one-off sporting events, annual tickets to events organized by Ljubljana’s sports clubs, a sports and recreation area reservation system, and a calendar of upcoming sporting events. It brings together everyone involved in sports in Ljubljana on whatever level, from athletes and recreation enthusiasts to sponsors, sports fans, and tourists.

Ljubljana is also one of the more important centres of theatrical art in this part of Europe, particularly its progressive, innovative, and thoughtprovoking strands. Even the language barriers are often broken down by the interesting approaches used by the city’s artists. Apart from that, Ljubljana also hosts numerous massparticipation sporting events.
2014 will mark the 2000th anniversary of Emona It was in 14 AD or perhaps a year later that the construction of the Roman colony of Emona on the site of the present-day Ljubljana was completed with the help of a large donation from the Roman emperors Augustus and Tiberius. 2,000 years later, in 2014, Ljubljana will mark the anniversary of the foundation of Emona with a vibrant programme of events, from exhibitions and theatre performances to living history and other events allowing you to experience the Roman Ljubljana first-hand, among other things through pampering your palate with authentic Roman cuisine served by some of Ljubljana’s restaurants.
