Exhibitions Festivals
Water 24 Jun 2015 - 8 May 2016, City Museum of Ljubljana Through four main themes and various timelines, the exhibition presents the importance of water. It is essential for our survival, the mobility of humans, goods, ideas and knowledge, our mythologies and beliefs, art and language. The exhibition is also discussing water cycles in nature, their meaning and ecology. The first three themes build their stories through museum artefacts among which a larger wooden boat, presented to the public for the very first time, deserves a special mention. Other artefacts also include a rich glass collection, famous artworks by Slovenian artists and a selection of the most important artefacts from the collection of the Potočnik family, originating from the riverbed of the Ljubljanica. The fourth theme is presented with an interactive experimental element, primary intended for children’s experiential workshops. 6 March at 13:00 free guided tour in English Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 21:00. Closed: Mondays
Plečnik Collection The new permanent exhibition at the Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most important projects of the late architect. Plečnik’s creativity comes to life through the plans, models and photographs of his creations such as the Zacherl House in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National and University Library in Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik’s never realized visions are also on display. The Cathedral of Freedom, the master’s vision of the Slovenian parliament, is especially worthy of our attention. Guided tours: every hour, on the hour (the last guided tour at 17:00). Groups must not contain more than seven people. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays
The designer and architect Saša J. Mächtig is considered to be one of the most important figures in Slovenian industrial design. His best known work is the K67 kiosk, a multi-purpose modular unit that became a familiar feature of cities and towns across Slovenia and a number of other central European cities in the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition Saša J. Mächtig: Systems, Structures, Strategies offers a retrospective overview of Mächtig’s major design achievements, which include, among others, the Žaba (Frog) litter bins, the Ekos recycling containers, wall-mounted acoustic phone booths, and a number of other street furniture elements. Exhibitions
The Celts from the Emerald Mountains 2 Feb - 30 Mar, National Museum of Slovenia - Metelkova
Showcasing the archaeological heritage of the ‘Celtic Highlanders’ within a broader historical and geographical context, this exhibition takes you back to the last centuries BC, on a journey through the mountainous pre-Alpine and Alpine regions of Veneto, Carnia, and Friuli in Italy, the Austrian Carinthia, and the Soča river basin and the region of Kras in Slovenia. The Celts settled at the most prominent strategic points in the area to gain control over the river valleys below. They established burial grounds and made offerings of weapons and horse equipment to natural forces and war deities. They began to coin money, traded and fought with the Romans, and developed a completely new and unique style of decorating jewellery, clothing, weapons, horse equipment, and crockery. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

Slovenian History Ljubljana Castle Slovenian History, Ljubljana Castle’s permanent exhibition, shows the dynamic history of Slovenia and Ljubljana. Slovenian territory, lying at the junction of natural routes between the Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Pannonian Plain, has been the point of convergence of different peoples and cultures since prehistory. The exhibition covers the Slovenian history from the earliest traces of human presence (200,000 BC) to the landmark events following Slovenia’s independence in 1991 and presents the societies of the different periods, the state formations, the political, social and economic circumstances, migrations, transport, culture, architecture and the everyday life. Open: 10:00 - 18:00 daily Puppet Museum at Ljubljana Castle Slovenia is a country with a rich tradition of puppeteering. The Puppet Museum’s permanent exhibition, set up by the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, introduces
you to the history of puppeteering in Slovenia and the creativity of contemporary Slovenian puppeteers, presents the most popular puppet characters, and gives you an insight into puppeteering techniques and the process of creating a puppet show. After viewing the exhibition, you can try your hand at puppeteering skills. Open: 9:00 - 18:00 daily Bogoslav Kalaš: The Painting Machine 7 Dec 2015 - 20 Mar 2016, Museum of Modern Art The artist Bogoslav Kalaš has developed a unique painting technique named aerography or air brush painting. The exhibition The Painting Machine provides a comprehensive overview of his work to date. The paintings on display are based on Kalaš’s ‘family album photographs’ (nudes, landscapes, portraits, still lifes), which the artist has enlarged and transferred to canvas by means of his painting machine. Using this technique, he has managed to combine the conventions of traditional painting with the require-

ments of modernity, hyper-modernity, and contemporaneity and offered an opportunity for a reconsideration of the role of painting in the 20th century. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays Crises and New Beginnings: Art in Slovenia 2005-2015 22 Dec 2015 - 2 Apr 2016, Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM) The exhibition Crises and New Beginnings aims to present a selective overview of recent and current developments in contemporary art in Slovenia and attempts to define the main phenomena and trends observed in Slovenian art over the last decade. It covers a wide range of different art forms and involves the collaboration of many art professionals and experts. Creating their works, artists react critically to the numerous contradictions of the ideological and cultural discourses around them. The new generation of Slovenian artists has replaced nostalgia with melancholy, the banality of the everyday with an elevated pathos, and realistic expectations with overblown ambitions. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays ALUO LXX: Past, Present, Future 19 Jan - 24 Apr, Jakopič Gallery The exhibition is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of full-time academic classes at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Ljubljana. What the exhibition seeks to emphasise particularly, is the plurality of pedagogical practices and the hybridity of the current art production ranging from an individual item to a spatial installation, the inclusion of performativity and the relation between the exhibited, the exhibitor and the visitor, in which the latter two both participate actively. The exhibition has been designed as a hybrid
spatial installation of the past, present and future, combining the traditional gallery setting with spatial installations and sites intended for live performances of creative/educational activities. Saturdays at 16:30 guided tours in English hosted by a student of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Ljubljana Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays Asmission free Antoni Tàpies: Prints 1959-1987 23 Feb - 4 Jun, International Centre of Graphic Arts The Catalan painter, sculptor, and printmaker Antoni Tàpies (1923−2012) was one of the greatest European artists of his generation. The exhibition Antoni Tàpies: Prints 1959−1987 brings together a selection of his prints and art objects. Antoni Tàpies was present on the international scene from the mid-1950s. His early work was influenced by Surrealism, but he later switched to abstract art and was, among other things, a notable member of the art movement known as Art Informel. Tàpies was attracted to relief forms and the expressive value of non-traditional art materials such as marble dust, sand, and soil, which he introduced into printmaking and developed a number of new techniques. Tàpies participated in several editions of the Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts, for the first time in 1967, when he was awarded the Biennial’s Grand Prize. His art influenced a number of Slovenian artists who came into contact with Art Informel, including Janez Bernik, Andrej Jemec, Bogdan Borčić. 26 March at 16:00 guided tours in English Oen: 10:00 - 18:00. The Marin Sorescu National Theatre in Craiova, in collaboration with the American director Robert Wilson, presents a production of Eugène Ionesco’s enigmatic play Rhinoceros, which hovers between Surrealism, Magical Realism, and the Absurd. Together with a 30-strong ensemble, Wilson has created a piece of theatrical madness in which imagination jumps the barriers of reality and pushes the boundaries of logic and classical perception of the world. People gradually turn into rhinoceroses, reality gives way to unreality, and theatrical magic dispels even the bleakest of the bleak visions of the world and affords views beyond, across other dimensions. What Ionesco tried to achieve with the language, Wilson does with visual images.

The programme will feature a week of Irish cuisine, free Irish dance classes, a traditional Irish music session in a city centre pub, and a literary dinner. The
highlight of the week will certainly be the concert of Irish music with Irish and local artists, on Saturday, 19 Mar, in the Slovenian Philharmonic. The Embassy of Ireland has again included Ljubljana in the “Global Greening” project, in which the Irish tourist agency, Tourism Ireland, lights world famous landmarks in green to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. This year’s greening will feature over 180 iconic landmarks, including Ljubljana Castle and the Slovenian Philharmonic. Since this year the project coincides with the “Ljubljana - Green Capital of Europe” project, the Embassy will arrange the lighting of the castle with an Irish flavour. 14 Mar, 17:00 Irish street dance Čopova ulica street 15 mar, 17:00 Free Irish dance classes Šola irskega plesa, Celovška cesta street 16 Mar, 20:00 Trad session An evening of Irish traditional music Cutty Sark 18 Mar, 20:00 Literary dinner Druga violina 19 Mar, 20:00 Celebration of Irish music

The Welcoming of Spring, an event traditionally held in Ljubljana on the eve of St Gregory’s Day, revives the handicraftsmen’s tradition of launching wooden clogs with burning candles inside them into rivers and streams as a sign of rejoicing at no longer having to work by lights. According to folk belief, St Gregory is the harbinger of spring. By the Julian calendar, his name day, 12 March, is the first day of spring.
