Saša J. Mächtig: Systems, Structures, Strategies - retrospective exhibition 26 Nov - 20 Mar 2016, Museum of Architecture and Design

The designer and architect Saša J. Mächtig is considered to be one of the most important figures in Slovenian industrial design. His best known work is the K67 kiosk, a multi-purpose modular unit that became a familiar feature of cities and towns across Slovenia and a number of other central European cities in the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition Saša J. Mächtig: Systems, Structures, Strategies offers a retrospective overview of Mächtig’s major design achievements, which include, among others, the Žaba (Frog) litter bins, the Ekos recycling containers, wall-mounted acoustic phone booths, and a number of other street furniture elements. Water 24 Jun - 8 May 2016, City Museum of Ljubljana Through four main themes and various timelines, the exhibition presents the importance of water. It is essential for our survival, the mobility of humans, goods, ideas and knowledge, our mythologies and beliefs, art and language. The exhibition is also discussing water cycles in nature, their meaning and ecology. The first three themes build their stories through museum artefacts among which a larger wooden boat, presented to the public for the very first time, deserves a special mention. Other artefacts also include a rich glass collection, famous artworks by Slovenian artists and a selection of the most important artefacts from the collection of the Potočnik family, originating from the riverbed of the Ljubljanica. The fourth theme is presented with an interactive experimental element, primary intended for children’s experiential workshops. Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 21:00. Closed: Mondays and 1 Jan

Tomaž Lavrič: The Magical Language of Comics - exhibition 18 Nov - 21 Jan 2016, CD Gallery Cartoon artist, caricaturist and illustrator Tomaž Lavrič boasts a fascinating career and rich bibliography. Highly proficient in all elements of comics, Lavrič’s visuality can switch between narrativeness and realism, or alternate between constructivist abstractness and tender lyricism. The cartoonist draws from various elements of visual culture, ranging from cinema and painting to drawing and video, fusing them idiosyncratically in a language that is very much his own. The exhibition thus highlights those series that establish the particularities of this idiom. Open: 10:00- 19:00, Sundays 10:00 - 14:00 Plečnik Collection The new permanent exhibition at the Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most important projects of the late architect. Plečnik’s creativity comes to life through the plans, models and photographs of his creations such as the Zacherl House in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National and University Library in Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik’s never realized visions are also on display. The Cathedral of Freedom, the master’s vision of the Slovenian parliament, is especially worthy of our attention. Guided tours: every hour, on the hour (the last guided tour at 17:00). Groups must not contain more than seven people. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays and 1 Jan

Puppet Museum at Ljubljana Castle Slovenia is a country with a rich tradition of puppeteering. The Puppet Museum’s permanent exhibition, set up by the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, introduces you to the history of puppeteering in Slovenia and the creativity of contemporary Slovenian puppeteers, presents the most popular puppet characters, and gives you an insight into puppeteering techniques and the process of creating a puppet show. After viewing the exhibition, you can try your hand at puppeteering skills. Open 9:00 - 18:00 daily Bogoslav Kalaš: The Painting Machine 7 Dec - 20 Mar, Museum of Modern Art The artist Bogoslav Kalaš has developed a unique painting technique named aerography or air brush painting. The exhibition The Painting Machine provides a comprehensive overview of his work to date. The paintings on display are based on Kalaš’s ‘family album photographs’ (nudes, landscapes, portraits, still lifes), which the artist has enlarged and transferred to canvas by means of his painting machine. Using this technique, he has managed to combine the conventions of traditional painting with the requirements of modernity, hyper-modernity, and contemporaneity and offered an opportunity for a reconsideration of the role of painting in the 20th century. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays and 1 Jan

Crises and New Beginnings: Art in Slovenia 2005-2015 22 Dec - 2 Apr, Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM) The exhibition Crises and New Beginnings aims to present a selective overview of recent and current developments in contemporary art in Slovenia and attempts to define the main phenomena and trends observed in Slovenian art over the last decade. It covers a wide range of different art forms and involves the collaboration of many art professionals and experts. Creating their works, artists react critically to the numerous contradictions of the ideological and cultural discourses around them. The new generation of Slovenian artists has replaced nostalgia with melancholy, the banality of the everyday with an elevated pathos, and realistic expectations with overblown ambitions. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays and 1 Jan

Archaeologists found more than 10,000 artefacts from different historical periods in the Ljubljana Marshes. The most important find of all is the world’s oldest wooden wheel, dating approximately between 3,350 and 3,100 B.C. The wheel is surprisingly accurate and extremely skilfully constructed. The taking of wood contraction and expansion into account, the manner of attachment and joining and other details point to an exceptionally skilled master craftsman and a real connoisseur of various types of wood. The technological perfection of the wheel and the axle besides it age are what places these items at the very pinnacle of world cultural heritage. The Oldest Wooden Wheel with an axel in the world is exclusively put on display for one month. Open 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:0021:00. Closed: Mondays and and 1 Jan

Seth Haley, better known as Com Truise, is an American music producer of retro-futurist electronic sounds and one of the most prominent protégés of the New-York-based label Ghostly International. He has grafted his synth obsession on the influences of the 1980s new wave and used contemporary production methods to develop his own experimental mix, which he refers to as ‘mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk’.

Opera, ballet, theatre, dance

Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ljubljana: Otello 21, 22, and 23 Jan at 19:30; 25 Jan at 16:00; 26, 28, and 29 Jan at 19:30; Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre This new production of Verdi’s opera Otello is directed by Manfred Schweigkofler, who staged a hit production of The Rhine Nixies at Ljubljana’s Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre a few years ago. Otello’s literary source, Shakespeare’s play Othello, was a good point of departure for the tragic whirlwind of events in Verdi’s opera about the devoted yet fragile love between a heroic Moorish general and the daughter of a Venetian senator, which is tragically destroyed by parvenuism, grudge, envy, and intrigue. Performed by: the soloists, choir, and orchestra of the Slovenian National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ljubljana
