Doors: Spatial and Symbolic Passageways of Life 11 Oct - Nov, Slovene Ethnographic Museum This exhibition presents doors as a part of cultural heritage, an element of everyday life, and an object that has many different symbolic meanings. It brings together all kinds of doors and related objects, from the oldest known doors, keys and locks sourced from various museums and private collections to state- of- the- art objects. Exhibited doors tell stories about families of different social and professional backgrounds from various parts of Slovenia, both those who the doors were made by and those who used them in daily life. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

Jože Ciuha: The Labyrinth of Time 17 Dec - 13 Apr, Jakopič Gallery This retrospective of work by Jože Ciuha, one of the most renowned Slovenian fine artists, brings together some of the major highlights of the artist’s oeuvre. Ciuha, who will celebrate his 90th birthday in April 2014, around the time when his retrospective is set to close, has a 70- year artistic career behind him. His work is underpinned by a distinctive philosophical background built up mainly from experiences from his travels. One of his major influences was the Buddhist experience of the world. Jože Ciuha has received numerous accolades for his artistic work. He has been named a Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour and an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts. Saturdays at 16:30 guided tours of the exhibition in English language Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

Eight Female Painters Contemporary Slovenian Painting in the 2nd Millennium 4 Mar - 20 Apr, CD Gallery Even if it seemed that contemporary Slovenian painting reached an impasse after the culminations in the 1980s and 1990s, there nevertheless occurred a new and landmark return to the painting, also on the international scale, on the threshold of the new millennium. After a pictorial miracle, pure “texture” in the pictures by Joni Zakonjšek, there burgeoned forth a wave of female painters who have re-engendered trust in the pictorial statement and artistic insight. A literal revelation of new painting of fresh artistic vigour in the works by Maruša Šuštar, Nika Zupančič, Ksenija Čerče, Katja Sudec, Ana Sluga, Suzana Brborović and Ira Marušič. Furthermore, numerous others are surfacing, the ones who have only begun to evolve their style of exploring and inventing a new painting. Open 10:00 - 19:00, Sundays 10:00 - 14:00

Present and Presence - Repetition 6: Install Yourself! 11 Feb - 9 Jun, Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM) The exhibition brings together works by Slovenian, Balkan, and Eastern European artists created from the 1960s to the present day. Themed on the concept of contemporaneity, the exhibition deals with various forms of time. The sixth edition of the exhibition presents a selection of works from the Arteast 2000+ and the national collection of Moderna galerija, the city’s museum of modern and contemporary art, bringing into focus the rhythm of space in installation art. The exhibition showcases representative works by a number of renowned artists such as Ilya Kabakov, Ivan Kožarić, Stanisław Dróżdż, and Marko Pogačnik. It also features works by important artists of the middle and younger generation and a selection of works by the giants of minimalism Carl André and Bruce Nauman. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

The Mummy and the Crocodile: The Slovenians Exploring the Lands along the Nile 21 Mar - 31 Dec, National Museum of Slovenia - Metelkova After nearly a century, the National Museum of Slovenia is putting on display the Egyptian Collection of its predecessor, the Provincial Museum of Carniola. The exhibition reveals the stories of three Slovenian Egyptologists who brought the objects in the collection over to Slovenia. It is not widely known today that a number of successful explorers of Africa were Slovenian, despite the fact that the achievements of the Slovenian Egyptologists Anton Lavrin, Ignacij Knoblehar, and Josef Švegel (Josef Schwegel in German) were on a par with those of their contemporaries exploring the ancient Egyptian civilization. Apart from the objects that the three Egyptologists donated to the Provincial Museum of Carniola, it was also the stories of their experiences in exotic lands that stirred the imagination of the Slovenian public of their time. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the mummy of Isahta (A-Keswy-Ta), a priest of Amon, which aroused great public interest at the time it was brought over to Ljubljana along with a stuffed crocodile. The mummy kept at the National Museum is the only human mummy to be held in Slovenia.

Ludwig Minkus’s Don Quixote, based on a novel of the same name by Miguel de Cervantes, revolves around a love story between Kitri and Basil. The driving force of the story are the characters of Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza. Ludwig Minkus (1826-1917) is one of the many 18th and 19th century composers who each wrote their own version of the ballet Don Quixote. The Don Quixote by Minkus, premiered in Moscow in 1869, secured its place in the repertoires of ballet theatres for many years to follow.
