Roman Stories from the Crossroads National Museum of Slovenia's permanent exhibition The National Museum of Slovenia's new permanent exhibition brings together archaeological finds from the time when the territory of the present-day Slovenia was part of the Roman Empire. The exhibition was set up to mark the 2000th anniversary of Emona, a city that stood on the site of the present-day Ljubljana in Roman times. Over a thousand objects on exhibition include an imperial construction inscription dated to 14 or 15 AD, which provides evidence on the time of the foundation of Emona. Another important exhibit is a gilded bronze statue of a citizen of Emona, displayed complete with the reconstruction of its original position in the time of Emperor Trajan. The statue was part of a sepulchral monument obviously modelled on Trajan's Column in Rome. Open 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 20:00.

The Mummy and the Crocodile: The Slovenians Exploring the Lands along the Nile 21 Mar - 31 Dec, National Museum of Slovenia - Metelkova After nearly a century, the National Museum of Slovenia is putting on display the Egyptian Collection of its predecessor, the Provincial Museum of Carniola. The exhibition reveals the stories of three Slovenian Egyptologists who brought the objects in the collection over to Slovenia. It is not widely known today that a number of successful explorers of Africa were Slovenian, despite the fact that the achievements of the Slovenian Egyptologists Anton Lavrin, Ignacij Knoblehar, and Josef Ĺ vegel (Josef Schwegel in German) were on a par with those of their contemporaries exploring the ancient Egyptian civilization. Apart from the objects that the three Egyptologists donated to the Provincial Museum of Carniola, it was also the stories of their experiences in exotic lands that stirred the imagination

of the Slovenian public of their time. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the mummy of Isahta (A-Keswy-Ta), a priest of Amon, which aroused great public interest at the time it was brought over to Ljubljana along with a stuffed crocodile. The mummy kept at the National Museum is the only human mummy to be held in Slovenia. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays Free entrance every first Sunday of the month We never imagined such a war exhibition marking the centenary of the First World War 22 Jun 2014 - 15 May 2015, National Museum of Contemporary History Marking the centenary of the First World War, this exhibition focuses on human stories of civilians and those mobilized to fight on the side of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy during the war. The majority of exhibits are part of the surviving heritage coming from family legacies and various museum collections. Exhibited photographs and

personal use items take visitors on a journey across the battlefields where Austro-Hungarian soldiers fought during the war. The exhibition presents some of the crucial events in the history of the First World War. It deals with the cause of the war, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the AustroHungarian throne, who is depicted in a large number of exhibited photographs, including several lesser known ones. It also presents other historic events, from the declaration of war and the opening of the Isonzo Front to the death of Franz Joseph I of Austria and the attempt at the life of the prime minister, a dark premonition of the inevitable disintegration of Austria-Hungary. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays Awakening Beauty: The CrowtherOblak Collection of Victorian Art 24 Sep - 4 Jan, National Gallery of Slovenia The exhibition of works from the Crowther-Oblak art collection brings together more than 150 paintings and drawings created by the 19th century British artists of the Victorian classical tradition. What the artists whose works are contained in the Crowther-Oblak art collection have in common is that they were all decisively influenced by John Ruskin, Britain's leading art critic of their time. The selection of works for the Awakening Beauty art collection was made by Paul Crowther, a professor of philosophy at the National University of Ireland in Galway, and the Slovenian artist Mojca Oblak. Exhibited works include drawings and paintings by the artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and their

This exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of the Roman city of Emona, built two millennia ago on the site of the present-day Ljubljana. It offers you an opportunity to learn about the city's birth, life and decline, the everyday life of its residents, and the heritage they left behind. The Roman colony of Emona was founded on the site of the presentday Ljubljana almost precisely 2000 years ago. The remnants of the city, which had existed for about 500 years, were being explored already in the Middle Ages. Since then, the knowledge about the ancient predecessor of Ljubljana has grown tremendously, but the most recent archaeological explorations carried out in Ljubljana city centre of have yielded yet another set of remarkable new findings. 2 Nov, 13:00 Guided tour of the exhibition in English language Open 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 21:00.
