Wheel, 5,200 Years 24 May - 20 Apr 2014, City Museum of Ljubljana - MGML
Apart from featuring the world's oldest surviving wooden wheel with an axel, found by archaeologists at the Ljubljana Moors in 2002, the exhibition presents the Ljubljana Moors' prehistoric pile-dwelling culture and the history of the invention of the wheel. The Ljubljana Moors are a site where archaeologists found more than 10,000 objects dating from different periods in history. The remains of the prehistoric pile-dwelling culture that developed in the area have been given UNESCO World Heritage status. The most important of all the finds discovered at the Ljubljana Moors is the world's oldest surviving wooden wheel, crafted between 3350 and 3100 BC. The exhibition is accompanied by a wide and varied programme of educational and other events. Open 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 21:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays 6 www.visitljubljana.com
Exhibitions
The Knight, the Lady, and the Dragon: The Heritage of Medieval Warriors 13 Dec - 9 Feb 2014, National Museum of Slovenia - Metelkova ulica street This exhibition, showing at the National Museum of Slovenia's department located in the Metelkova Museum Quarter, presents medieval chivalry as it really was, challenging the com conception of knights as noble- minded medieval warriors. New findings by Slovenian experts in the field reveal a picture of Slovenia's medieval past that is rather different from that presented in history classes and old history books. Bringing together a wide variety of different objects from museums in Slovenia and abroad, the exhibition offers an objective yet exciting look at different aspects of chivalry in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays Tito: A Yugoslavian Icon 7 Nov - 28 Feb, Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre This exhibition presents the life and character of Marshal Josip Broz Tito, the
president of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia and one of the most charismatic statesmen of his time. Josip Broz Tito (1892–1980) first wrote himself into the history books as the leader of one of the most successful Second World War resistance movements, after the war as a statesman of a multinational socialist federation capable of skilfully maintaining political balance between the demands of the Eastern Block and the capitalist West, and finally as one of the main initiators of the NonAlignment Movement. The exhibition presents Tito's life through testimonies by his comrades, photographs, and film footage from private archives which have so far not been publicly shown. Also included are Tito's personal memorabilia and a number of exhibits from the Museum of Yugoslav History in Belgrade. Open 10:00 - 19:00 daily Zdenka Golob - Prints 10 Dec - 8 Feb, 2014, International Centre of Graphic Arts Zdenka Golob is a Slovene artist of the older generation (1928). Her prints were usually produced in cycles and they have an individualized, distinctly ‘female’ character, which is engaged with the aesthetics of the Ljubljana school of graphic arts on the one hand, and the weight of forging beyond its very framework, on the other. The retrospective exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to view the entire oeuvre of the artist, whose works have not yet been dealt with thoroughly by the art- historical profession and have not yet been shown in any major public presentations.
Nataša Mirtič - Re:Production 10 Dec - 8 Feb, 2014, International Centre of Graphic Arts Nataša Mirtič (1973) is one of the most recognizable printmakers of the middle generation of artists in Slovenia. With the recycling of existing matrices and formation of new combinations, her work focuses on investigating the basic properties of printmaking and the sets of works that arise within these newly established relationships. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays Grupa 53: Drawings, paintings and sculptures 30 Oct - 22 Dec, Bežigrad Gallery 2 An exhibition of unknown works by the Slovenian avant- garde group of the 50’s and 60’s. The exhibition features artworks that were created between 1953 and 1966, the period when the members of Group 53 most commonly exhibited as a group. The artworks exhibited at Bežigrad Gallery 2 have been selected in such a way that each of the exhibited works form a unified whole - a group of related works and works that have the appearance of a completed series. In their research and experiments, the artists of Group 53 often used a combination of different materials. Sixty years after their first exhibition, we can say that the works of Group 53 are an important part of Slovenian art and even worldwide art, and this is also the message of the exhibition at Open 10:00 - 18:00, Saturdays 10:00 - 14:00. Closed: Sundays, Mondays, holidays Admission free
Jože Ciuha: The Labyrinth of Time 17 Dec - 13 Apr, Jakopič Gallery This retrospective of work by Jože Ciuha, one of the most renowned Slovenian fine artists, brings together some of the major highlights of the artist’s oeuvre. Ciuha, who will celebrate his 90th birthday in April 2014, around the time when his retrospective is set to close, has a 70- year artistic career behind him. His work is underpinned by a distinctive philosophical background built up mainly from experiences from his travels. One of his major influences was the Buddhist experience of the world. Jože Ciuha has received numerous accolades for his artistic work, including the Prešeren Fund Prize and the Levstik Award. He has been named a Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour and an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays Admission free

Pier Paolo Pasolini: Amado mio 10 Dec, 19:00, Mladinsko Theatre A sensitive and touching story about love, possibly one of the most intimate of Pasolini’s works, an explosion of suppressed sensuality and vice, but also “an abstract, eternal moment of pure desire” which blossoms in the absurd time of World War II when the fear of death blends with the banal and the obscene, when the atmosphere is perverted and suffocating.

La Verità is an unconventional theatre production inspired by surrealist poetics. Stunning acrobatic feats are performed in front of a scrim painted by Salvador Dalí for the ballet Mad Tristan in 1944. Dalí's scrim, stashed for decades in the warehouse of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, was sold to a Swiss art foundation, which, rather than putting it on exhibition in an art museum, handed it over to Compagnia Finzi Pasca and gave it a new life on the stage. Festive Fair 3 Dec - 1 Jan, 10:00–22:00, Breg and Cankarjevo nabrežje embankments, Prešernov trg square Each year in December, Ljubljana's Festive Fair becomes the centre of the city's social life. The fair, set up in the immediate vicinity of a major open- air venue for festive events held daily throughout December, is well known for its vibrancy and cheerful atmosphere. Festively decorated green stalls, designed specially for the fair, sell a fine choice of products suitable for giving as gifts.
For many years now, the Festive Fair, with its countless food and drink stalls offering mulled wine, tea, liqueurs, sausages, and various grilled dishes, has been considered to be a major venue for what the locals refer to as ‘the merry December in Ljubljana Old Town’ and see as a perfect opportunity to bump into friends and acquaintances whom they may not have seen for a while. Apart from a wide variety of Christmas and New Year- themed products, the Festive Fair offers various fashion accessories, including a good choice of headwear, gloves, scarves, and other things to keep us warm on cold winter days. Some of the stalls sell interesting and reasonably priced creations by young Slovenian designers, most of which are not available in shops. Other goods sold for sale include various arts and crafts items and local delicacies such as honey, schnapps, and confections.
