Gabrijel Stupica: A Retrospective 18 Dec - 15 May, Museum of Modern Art

2013 marked the birth centenary of Gabriel Stupica, one of the greatest Slovenian 20th century’s painters. To mark this occasion, Ljubljana’s Museum of Modern Art put on a major retrospective of his work, which will continue to be on display until mid-May 2014. The exhibition is a comprehensive and systematic chronological presentation of the work of one of the most important Slovenian modernist painters. It brings together more than 300 works, including 123 paintings and 170 drawings, gouaches, temperas, and watercolours on paper from all periods of the artist’s career. Open 10:00 - 18:00. The Knight, the Lady, and the Dragon: The Heritage of Medieval Warriors 13 Dec - 9 Feb, National Museum of Slovenia - Metelkova ulica street This exhibition, showing at the National Museum of Slovenia’s department located in the Metelkova Museum Quarter, presents medieval chivalry as it really was, challenging the com conception of knights as noble- minded medieval warriors. New findings by Slovenian experts in the field reveal a picture of Slovenia’s medieval past that is rather different from that presented in history classes and old history books. Bringing together a wide variety of different objects from museums in Slovenia and abroad, the exhibition offers an objective yet exciting look at different aspects of chivalry in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. Marij Pregelj (1913-1967): Exhibition of Illustrations from Iliad and Odyssey 24 Sep - 6 Apr, Ljubljana Museum of Modern Art Marking the birth centenary of Marij Pregelj, one of the most important Slovenian modernist painters, this exhibition brings together 50 of Pregelj’s illustrations for the highly acclaimed Slovenian editions of Homer’s epic poems the Iliad (1949-50) and the Odyssey (1951). Pregelj’s works add up to one of the most important modernist oeuvres in the former Yugoslavia, part of which Slovenia used to be in Pregelj’s time. A special place in the artist’s output is held by his illustrations for various classics of Slovenian and world literature, the illustrations for the Iliad and the Odyssey representing a turning point in his artistic development. Doors: Spatial and Symbolic Passageways of Life 11 Oct - Nov, Slovene Ethnographic Museum This exhibition presents doors as a part of cultural heritage, an element of everyday life, and an object that has many different symbolic meanings. It brings together all kinds of doors and related objects, from the oldest known doors, keys and locks sourced from various museums and private collections to state- of- the- art objects. Exhibited doors tell stories about families of different social and professional backgrounds from various parts of Slovenia, both those who the doors were made by and those who used them in daily life. Closed: Mondays Tito: A Yugoslavian Icon 7 Nov - 28 Feb, Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre This exhibition presents the life and character of Marshal Josip Broz Tito, the president of the Socialist Federative

Republic of Yugoslavia and one of the most charismatic statesmen of his time. Josip Broz Tito (1892-1980) first wrote himself into the history books as the leader of one of the most successful Second World War resistance movements, after the war as a statesman of a multinational socialist federation capable of skilfully maintaining political balance between the demands of the Eastern Block and the capitalist West, and finally as one of the main initiators of the NonAlignment Movement. The exhibition presents Tito’s life through testimonies by his comrades, photographs, and film footage from private archives which have so far not been publicly shown. Also included are Tito’s personal memorabilia and a number of exhibits from the Museum of Yugoslav History in Belgrade. Open 10:00 - 19:00 daily

Wheel, 5,200 Years 24 May - 20 Apr 2014, City Museum of Ljubljana

The Ljubljana Moors are a site where archaeologists found more than 10,000 objects dating from different periods in history. The remains of the prehistoric pile- dwelling culture that developed in the area have been given UNESCO World Heritage status. The most important of all the finds discovered at the Ljubljana Moors is the world’s oldest surviving wooden wheel, crafted between 3350 and 3100 BC. Dušan Mandić - Private D. M. Die Welt ist schön (The World is Beautiful) 12 Dec - 9 Feb City Art Gallery Dušan Mandić is considered the first artist in Slovenia to have transferred graffiti painting from the urban/ street space to the gallery space. As one of the foremost ideologists of the Ljubljana subculture scene, especially its visual arts production, he left an indelible mark in the early 1980s on the occurrence of neo-avant-garde movements as an alternative to the established art system. Equally salient is his role in forming the visual arts group Irwin in 1983. Open 11:00 - 19:00. Closed: Mondays Admission free

This retrospective of work by Jože Ciuha, one of the most renowned Slovenian fine artists, brings together some of the major highlights of the artist’s oeuvre. Ciuha, who will celebrate his 90th birthday in April 2014, has a 70- year artistic career behind him. His work is underpinned by a distinctive philosophical background built up mainly from experiences from his travels. One of his major influences was the Buddhist experience of the world. Jože Ciuha has received numerous accolades for his artistic work. He has been named a Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour and an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts. Zdenka Golob - Prints 10 Dec - 16 Feb, International Centre of Graphic Arts Zdenka Golob is a Slovene artist of the older generation (1928). Her prints were usually produced in cycles and they have an individualized, distinctly ‘female’ character, which is engaged with the aesthetics of the Ljubljana school of graphic arts on the one hand, and the weight of forging beyond its very framework, on the other. Nataša Mirtič - Re:Production 10 Dec - 16 Feb, International Centre of Graphic Arts Nataša Mirtič (1973) is one of the most recognizable printmakers of the middle generation of artists in Slovenia. With the recycling of existing matrices and formation of new combinations, her work focuses on investigating the basic properties of printmaking and the sets of works that arise within these newly established relationships. Dream Theater are well-known for basing their innovative approach to heavy metal on experimentation and musical virtuosity. The band has been active since 1985, when a group of students from Boston’s Berklee College of Music got together to form a band. Dream Theater’s music is characterized by long epic songs with numerous melodic passages. Their albums have sold over eight million copies to date.

The Ljubljana International Orchestra aspires to achieve excellence in the performance of music while promoting Ljubljana as a city with a rich musical tradition and a burgeoning contemporary musical scene. The unconventional Norwegian double bassist Knut Erik Sundquist began his career as a jazz musician. Later he dedicated himself to obtaining musical education and became one of the best classical double bassists in Norway. The upcoming Ljubljana concert by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra will feature a programme of Dvořák and Rachmaninov performed by two of the best ambassadors of the Czech and Russian musical traditions: the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the pianist Nikolai Lugansky, also referred to as ‘the Russian prince of the piano’. The Stroj are a Slovenian experimental music group creating music using monumental metal percussion, electromechanical, and electronic instruments built on their own. The group’s sound has an industrial, tribal, and futuristic feel to it, and their concerts are riveting spectacles. The Stroj, led by Primož Oberžan, are a diverse collective of musicians who see it as their mission to find new ways of using technology, freeing it from being driven by the ideology of efficiency and making it produce meaning through a collective ritual.

The dance company Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal is renowned for combining jazz with classical dance techniques, contemporary dance, elements of circus, and visual arts. The company has been active since 1972, when its members were brought together by their desire to present contemporary jazz and its explosive creative powers on stage. The company’s international acclaim came in 1998, when Louis Robitaille was appointed its artistic director.

Michelangelo, a theatre production by the renowned Slovenian director Tomaž Pandur, is based on themes explored by the Croatian dramatist Miroslav Krleža in his play Michelangelo Buonarroti. It offers an insight into the personality of the Renaissance artist famed for painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the power of his vision, and the magnitude of his inner struggles. The distinguished Slovenian theatre director Tomaž Pandur, who lives and works in Spain, made a name for himself with his unique approach to performing arts. Dragon Carnival in the streets of Ljubljana 1 Mar, 11:00, historical city centre

The annual Dragon Carnival consists of a large Shrovetide carnival procession through the streets of Ljubljana and a programme of entertainment held in the centrally located Kongresni trg square. The carnival parade includes, among others, a number of typical Slovenian carnival figures rooted in pagan tradition, such as ‘kurent’, ‘laufar’, ‘morostar’, and several others. The main theme of this year’s carnival will be Emona, a Roman city which stood on the site of the present-day Ljubljana 2,000 years ago. The carnival procession will include a large number of carnival figures related to Roman history, mythology, and daily life created by Ljubljana’s primary school pupils under the guidance of expert mentors.

Each destination presents its opportunities for leisure activities for diverse types of tourists, from traditional holidaymakers to those with a penchant for adventure travel. Apart from the region’s destinations, the fair presents Slovenian culinary delights and wines. It is held simultaneously with the Boat Show, a nautical fair specialising in sports boats and pleasure craft. Taste of Britain Curry Festival 4 - 8 Feb Hotel Park The Taste of Britain Curry Festival offers you an opportunity not only to taste different curries, but also to learn how to cook them using authentic recipes. The festival, organized by the Curry Life Magazine and the Hotel Park, will bring together five top-class chefs, who will prepare 50 different curry dishes, including jalfrezi, balti, and the world famous chicken version of tikka massala. All the dishes will be available for tasting at several buffet lunches and dinners served at the restaurant of the Hotel Park. A short curry course led by distinguished guest chefs will be held on Wednesday 5 February. It does not limit itself to films only, but also hosts lectures, exhibitions, book presentations and a children’s programme, all with the aim of enriching the cultural component of how mountains are perceived.
