Wheel, 5,200 Years 24 May - 20 Apr 2014, City Museum of Ljubljana

Apart from featuring the world’s oldest surviving wooden wheel with an axel, found by archaeologists at the Ljubljana Moors in 2002, the exhibition presents the Ljubljana Moors’ prehistoric pile- dwelling culture and the history of the invention of the wheel. The Ljubljana Moors are a site where archaeologists found more than 10,000 objects dating from different periods in history. The remains of the prehistoric pile- dwelling culture that developed in the area have been given UNESCO World Heritage status. The most important of all the finds discovered at the Ljubljana Moors is the world’s oldest surviving wooden wheel, crafted between 3350 and 3100 BC. The exhibition is accompanied by a wide and varied programme of educational and other events. 5 and 19 Jan, 13:00 English guided tours Open 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 21:00. Closed: Mondays 4 www.visitljubljana.com

The Knight, the Lady, and the Dragon: The Heritage of Medieval Warriors 13 Dec - 9 Feb 2014, National Museum of Slovenia - Metelkova ulica street This exhibition, showing at the National Museum of Slovenia’s department located in the Metelkova Museum Quarter, presents medieval chivalry as it really was, challenging the com conception of knights as noble- minded medieval warriors. New findings by Slovenian experts in the field reveal a picture of Slovenia’s medieval past that is rather different from that presented in history classes and old history books. Bringing together a wide variety of different objects from museums in Slovenia and abroad, the exhibition offers an objective yet exciting look at different aspects of chivalry in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays Marij Pregelj (1913-1967): Exhibition of Illustrations from Iliad and Odyssey 24 Sep - 5 Jan 2014, Ljubljana Museum of Modern Art Marking the birth centenary of Marij Pregelj, one of the most important Slovenian modernist painters, this exhibition brings together 50 of Pregelj’s illustrations for the highly acclaimed

Slovenian editions of Homer’s epic poems the Iliad (1949-50) and the Odyssey (1951). Pregelj’s works add up to one of the most important modernist oeuvres in the former Yugoslavia, part of which Slovenia used to be in Pregelj’s time. A special place in the artist’s output is held by his illustrations for various classics of Slovenian and world literature, the illustrations for the Iliad and the Odyssey representing a turning point in his artistic development. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, 1 Jan Doors: Spatial and Symbolic Passageways of Life 11 Oct - Nov 2014, Slovene Ethnographic Museum This exhibition presents doors as a part of cultural heritage, an element of everyday life, and an object that has many different symbolic meanings. It brings together all kinds of doors and related objects, from the oldest known doors, keys and locks sourced from various museums and private collections to state- of- the- art objects. Exhibited doors tell stories about families of different social and professional backgrounds from various parts of Slovenia, both those who the doors were made by and those who used them in daily life. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays Tito: A Yugoslavian Icon 7 Nov - 28 Feb, Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre This exhibition presents the life and character of Marshal Josip Broz Tito, the president of the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia and one of the most charismatic statesmen of his time. Josip Broz Tito (1892-1980) first wrote himself into the history books as the leader of one of the most successful Second World War resistance movements,

after the war as a statesman of a multinational socialist federation capable of skilfully maintaining political balance between the demands of the Eastern Block and the capitalist West, and finally as one of the main initiators of the NonAlignment Movement. The exhibition presents Tito’s life through testimonies by his comrades, photographs, and film footage from private archives which have so far not been publicly shown. Also included are Tito’s personal memorabilia and a number of exhibits from the Museum of Yugoslav History in Belgrade. Open 10:00 - 19:00 daily Zdenka Golob - Prints 10 Dec - 16 Feb, 2014, International Centre of Graphic Arts Zdenka Golob is a Slovene artist of the older generation (1928). Her prints were usually produced in cycles and they have an individualized, distinctly ‘female’ character, which is engaged with the aesthetics of the Ljubljana school of graphic arts on the one hand, and the weight of forging beyond its very framework, on the other. The retrospective exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to view the entire oeuvre of the artist, whose works have not yet been dealt with thoroughly by the art- historical profession and have not yet been shown in any major public presentations. Nataša Mirtič - Re:Production 10 Dec - 16 Feb, 2014, International Centre of Graphic Arts Nataša Mirtič (1973) is one of the most recognizable printmakers of the middle generation of artists in Slovenia. With the recycling of existing matrices and formation of new combinations, her work focuses on investigating the basic properties of printmaking and the sets of works that arise within these newly established relationships. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays

Dušan Mandić - Private D. M. Die Welt ist schön (The World is Beautiful) 12 Dec - 9 Feb City Art Gallery Dušan Mandić is considered the first artist in Slovenia to have transferred graffiti painting from the urban/street space to the gallery space. As one of the foremost ideologists of the Ljubljana subculture scene, especially its visual arts production, he left an indelible mark in the early 1980s on the occurrence of neo-avant-garde movements as an alternative to the established art system, not only by developing a new approach to and conception of painting, but also thanks to his contribution in presenting contemporary art in the context of interrelated social processes and postDuchampian and postproductive practices. Equally salient is his role in forming the visual arts group Irwin in 1983. Open 11:00 - 19:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays Admission free Gabrijel Stupica (1913-1990): Retrospective 18 Dec - 15 May Museum of Modern Art Retrospective exhibition of one of the greatest Slovenian painters of the 20th century, Gabrijel Stupica. One of the most highly acclaimed artists in Slovenia and the former Yugoslavia, Stupica frequently exhibited his work both at home and abroad. Stupica’s extensive oeuvre is presented with a selection of 123 paintings and 170 drawings, gouaches, temperas, and watercolors on paper, many of which have been loaned by the stewards and owners of numerous public and private collections in Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and Germany. Open 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays, 1 Jan.

Jože Ciuha: The Labyrinth of Time 17 Dec - 13 Apr, Jakopič Gallery

This retrospective of work by Jože Ciuha, one of the most renowned Slovenian fine artists, brings together some of the major highlights of the artist’s oeuvre. Ciuha, who will celebrate his 90th birthday in April 2014, around the time when his retrospective is set to close, has a 70- year artistic career behind him. His work is underpinned by a distinctive philosophical background built up mainly from experiences from his travels. One of his major influences was the Buddhist experience of the world. Jože Ciuha has received numerous accolades for his artistic work, including the Prešeren Fund Prize and the Levstik Award. He has been named a Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour and an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts. Stunning acrobatic feats are performed in front of a scrim painted by Salvador Dalí for the ballet Mad Tristan in 1944. Dalí’s scrim, stashed for decades in the warehouse of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, was sold to a Swiss art foundation, which, rather than putting it on exhibition in an art museum, handed it over to Compagnia Finzi Pasca and gave it a new life on the stage.
