Jannis Kounellis, solo exhibition Oct 16 - Dec 3, City Art Gallery The first bigger project of the Greekborn Italian artist Jannis Kounellis in Slovenia. In the 1960s, as a critical response to the sociopolitical situation, Kounellis began to pursue various new trends in artistic exploration and to experiment with new languages in art. He replaced the two-dimensionality of the framed canvas with installations involving bed frames, doors, windows, fabric, and found objects from everyday life. In 1967 Kounellis took part in the exhibition Im Spazio at the La Bertesca gallery in Genoa. All the participating artists shared an interest in the space between art and life, the typical aesthetics of found materials, and a rational approach to representing reality, not unlike conceptual art. The exhibition curator Germano Celant named it Arte Povera, and Kounellis became one of the most prominent protagonists of this important European art movement. Open 11:00 - 19:00. Earlier this year, after a break of several years, the cult rock band Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released a new album, Push the Sky Away, and made their comeback to the music scene. The last time they played in Ljubljana was twenty years ago. In the meantime, Nick Cave teamed up with the band Grinderman. Their sold-out 2010 concert at Ljubljana's Križanke Summer Theatre was considered to be one of the city's best concerts of the year. The distinctive music played by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, active since 1983, is characterized by emotional depth, melancholy, and a combination of themes such as religion, love, violence, and death. According to Nick Cave, the band's new album Push the Sky Away is 'the most subtly beautiful of all the Bad Seeds albums'.

The Hilliard Ensemble is one of those legendary music groups whose concert programmes, sublime interpretations, and a special ability to attune themselves to the particularities of time and space appeal to a wide range of audiences. The Hilliard Ensemble originally made a name for itself as an early music ensemble, but soon it began to seek points of convergence between early and new music in an endeavour to give the ancient tradition a contemporary tinge. One of the ensemble’s worldwide successes was its collaboration with the Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Their exclusive recording, Officium, has received as many as five Platinum Discs and has even topped the popular music charts. 14 www.visitljubljana.com

Consisting of discussions with several different interviewees, the Mladinsko Theatre production Portraits, directed by the renowned Slovenian stage director Veno Taufer, explores the phenomenon of happiness in general, and the notion of personal happiness in our time in particular. What is happiness and how to achieve it? The happiness industry may promise people a fast track to attaining happiness, but the experience of this feeling is far from unambiguous. International research on people’s contentment with their lives shows that the world’s happiest nations are the Danes, the Canadians, the Swiss, and the Swedes while the Slovenians always seem to be at the bottom of the happiness list. So what do the interviewees in Portraits have to say about this? The performance will be surtitled in English and French. 16 www.visitljubljana.com

The Ljubljana Wine Route is an event marking St. Martin's Day, when, according to Slovenian tradition, grape must officially turns to wine. The event includes tastings of young wine and culinary delights served from stalls set up in front of the historical city centre's bars and restaurants. Slovenia is a country of good wines distinguished by their remarkably natural flavours. Ljubljana is not part of a wine-growing region, but due to its tradition as a commercial centre for the country's wine-growing districts it holds the international title of a ‘City of Vine and Wine’. The Ljubljana Wine Route, held annually in Ljubljana city centre, on the banks of the river Ljubljanica, brings together winemakers from all the wine-growing regions of Slovenia. Apart from wines, it also features traditional Slovenian food. Wines and food are available to visitors both for tasting and purchase at attractive prices. The event is accompanied by brass band concerts and folklore shows, offering visitors an opportunity to experience a bit of Slovenia's rich cultural heritage. In case of bad weather conditions, the event will be held in a tent.
