Visit Ljubljana
2014 Celebrations of the 2000th Anniversary of the Foundation of Emona It was around 14 AD that the construction of the Roman colony of Emona on the site of present-day Ljubljana was completed with the help of a large donation from Emperors Augustus and Tiberius. 2,000 years later, Ljubljana will mark the anniversary of the foundation of Emona with a vibrant programme of events. Emona-themed exhibitions will be held at the City Museum of Ljubljana, Ljubljana Castle, National Museum of Slovenia, Jakopic Gallery, and several open-air venues. Ljubljana will also host Romanthemed theatre, music, and living history events, a carnival, and many other events and activities allowing you to experience Roman Ljubljana first hand, among other things through pampering your palate with authentic Roman cuisine.
Experiencing the Roman Emona Tour This guided tour exploring the traces of the Roman city of Emona in the present-day Ljubljana takes you, among other things, on a brief visit to the City Museum of Ljubljana, which displays the remains of a Roman road and cloaca. At an early Christian centre, the guide will acquaint you with the ways of living of the residents of Emona.
Experiencing the Roman Emona by Torchlight Tour Before taking a two-hour journey into the Roman past, you will put on a Roman toga and get to know the culture of clothing in ancient Rome. Together with your guide, also dressed in Roman attire, you will explore the remains of Emona
preserved in Ljubljana’s streets, squares and buildings bearing witness to the city’s interesting past. Available to individuals and groups from 1 May to 30 September 2014.
Main Event: Ave, Emona! The main event to take place in the year of the 2000th anniversary of the foundation of Emona has been titled ‘Ave, Emona!’ and scheduled to take place from 22 to 24 August 2014. Over the three event days, the centrally located Kongresni trg square and Zvezda Park will host a large number of events and workshops. Costumed members of history societies from Slovenia and abroad will make sure to recreate the atmosphere of Roman times. You can expect to see Roman legionaries, who will put up a military tent and demonstrate their skills. There will be a Roman market, a taberna, and a programme of workshops on Roman religion, fortune-telling, hairdressing, fine art, pottery, etc. Costumed actors will re-enact a slave sale, the arrival of the Romans and the inauguration of Emona, a Roman legal dispute, an ancient battle, gladiator fights, and a Roman engagement and wedding. Roman dances will be performed.
Emona 2000: A City within an Empire, Museum Exhibition 23 May 2014 – 10 May 2015 City Museum of Ljubljana The Roman colony of Emona was the first city ever to be built on the site of the present Ljubljana. Like a precisely tuned machine connected to other similar machines, it helped drive the machinery of the empire. Adhering to a pan-imperial shape, architecture, lifestyle, legal regulation, and system of values, it raised its residents to be loyal Roman citizens. Its rituals and rules of operation contributed to the strength of the empires’ ideological and cultural identity.
Emona - themed photographic exhibition 1 July 2014 – 1 September 2014 Jakopič Promenade in Tivoli Park During the summer months of 2014, an exhibition dedicated to the 2000th anniversary of the foundation of Emona will be on view on a promenade in the heart of Tivoli, Ljubljana’s largest park. In a place where the bustling city centre gives way to a peaceful green area on its western edge, you will be able to experience the spirit of the past merging with the present.
