New Tourism Strategy for Ljubljana

Since the existing tourism strategy of Ljubljana ends this year, Ljubljana Tourism has already been working on a new strategic plan since this spring, outlining the direction and activities for the period up to 2020. Ljubljana has witnessed an extraordinary investment dynamics in the development of new accommodation facilities in the last five to seven years and is thus considered a sophisticated and attractive European destination. Not only that it has doubled the number of beds from 2001 to 2012, it has also more than doubled the number of visitors and overnight stays. This ranks Ljubljana among the European capitals with the highest growth rates. In addition, a range of services has been developed, resulting in Ljubljana receiving two major awards in 2012; for rearranging the embankments and

bridges on Ljubljanica River it won the European Prize for Urban Public Space 2012 awarded by the Center for Contemporary Culture in Barcelona beating off strong competition, while Ljubljana Tourist Card ranked third among the fourteen European capitals. Despite the fact that the trend of above-average growth in overnight stays continues in 2013 – the figures until the autumn 2013 exceeded last year’s by one-tenth– Ljubljana actively seeks to further increase the number of overnight stays and, of course, continues on working on other key activities, such as measures to increase its accessibility.

2000th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Roman Emona A special place in the history of settlement in Ljubljana is held by the Roman city of Emona, whose traces in the present city’s centre have survived until today. Right now, Ljubljana is anticipating an important anniversary related to Emona: the 2000th anniversary of the Roman city’s foundation to be held in 2014.

In order to make Ljubljana as the successor of Emona as recognizable as possible during the anniversary year, all the events and activities planned to mark the anniversary have been given a common visual identity and Emona has been identified as an important part of the city’s tourism offerings.

Guided Tour in Roman Togas; Photo: M. Pavček

The late spring of 2013 saw the introduction of a new programme of Emona tours, which offers visitors an opportunity to go on a journey 2000 years back in time and get to know the life and customs of the Romans in Emona. Apart from that, Ljubljana Tourism has published a guide to Roman Ljubljana intended for those interested in taking a one to two-hour self-guided Emona tour, and the City Museum of Ljubljana is preparing an exhibition on Emona set to open in spring 2014. A great way for visitors to Ljubljana to get an insight into life in Roman times is to visit the city’s three recently renovated archaeological parks: the Emona House, the Early Christian Centre, and the Roman Wall. The three parks are linked by a two-kilometre circular route including ten recognizable ancient monuments. www.visitljubljana.com www.mgml.si/en

Ljubljana Food Walks Ljubljana has recently experienced a significant culinary boom. Apart from a rich variety of restaurants offering Slovenian and international cuisines and a large number of culinary events, the city’s offerings also include guided culinary tours. Ljubljana Market, Photo: S. Jeršič and B. Jakše

When visiting a city abroad, it is often difficult to decide which restaurant to go to or where to snack on something really good and authentic. If you face a dilemma of this kind when visiting Ljubljana, you are recommended to take a guided culinary tour and explore the city in the company of a connoisseur of the local culinary scene. To get local tips on the most popular restaurants and cafés in Ljubljana, learn interesting facts about the city’s gourmet scene or check the calendar of culinary events, visit the Ljubljananjam web portal, also referred to as Ljubljana Foodies’ Hub. True culinary adventurers can also choose from a range of personalized food walks of the city. The walks take you on an exploration

of Ljubljana’s independent, nonchain local restaurants, cafés, wine bars, and pubs preparing food using fresh, mostly organically grown local ingredients. www.ljubljananjam.si Culinary tours of Ljubljana are also part of the offerings of Ljubljana Tourism. The tours, available daily at 11 a.m., 12 noon, and 6 p.m. by prior arrangement, take you on a walk around the city during which you see some of the major sights, get to know Slovenian cuisine, and taste some of the best known Slovenian dishes such as the Carniolan sausage, Ljubljana chicken, Idrija ‘žlikrofi’ dumplings, ‘bujta repa’ stew made with fermented turnips, pearl millet, and pork, and a choice of seasonal delights. www.visitljubljana.com Špela Golčer

Cooking: An Art to Be Learnt

One of the most original and fun ways to get a taste of Slovenian cuisine is to join a cooking workshop led by a professional chef. Weekly cooking workshops held under the title of Let’s Cook Together are run by the Skaručna Gourmet Club, which has made it its mission to preserve traditional Slovenian culinary art. Under the guidance of chef Marko Žagar, you can learn how to sharpen up your act in the kitchen and meanwhile do an Argentine tango or a Viennese waltz.

www.klubgurmanov.si Another option are cooking workshops held under the title of Cook Eat Slovenia, where you can find out how to cook good authentic Slovenian food and learn the secrets of how to make the dishes even more delicious. During the workshop, held in the relaxed atmosphere of the popular Gostilna dela restaurant, you

will prepare a four-course dinner and get to know numerous Slovenian wines. cookeatsi.ipage.com For those wanting to upgrade their cooking skills and explore new ideas in contemporary and traditional culinary art, the Jezeršek Academy, founded by Jezeršek gostinstvo, a catering company with a history of over 30 years, has designed a series

of themed cooking workshops held in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere of the Dvor Jezeršek hotel and restaurant. The workshops offer you an opportunity to learn how to prepare anything from wood-fired oven-baked bread to a feast for a large party of gourmets. www.jezersek.si Špela Golčer

Virtual Visit to the House of Experiments Ljubljana’s House of Experiments, a place popular with both children and adults, has developed an interesting and innovative mobile application called House of e-Xperiments. Using the application, Android and iOS mobile phone users can pay a virtual

visit to the real House of Experiments and run some experiments there from a distance. For the moment, the application allows you remote access to three experiments. Access to three more experiments will be available shortly. The new application, presented at several international conferences of science centres, has been met with a very positive response. It is available at www.h-e.si.

Free Sustainable Public Travel around the City Centre

This autumn, a new electric public transport vehicle called Kavalir 3 has been introduced to the pedestrianized part of the city centre following the success of the opensided electric vehicles Kavalir 1 and

Kavalir 2. The new vehicle, designed in the spirit of sustainable mobility, is not open-sided and is therefore suitable also for travel in winter time. Being electrically powered, it is environmentally friendly as it produces no exhaust gasses and is not noisy. Rather than running on a fixed route with stops, it can be hailed anywhere within the car-free zone. All rides are free of charge.

Always Something New New shops, restaurants, and other catering outlets offering products and services of outstanding quality are constantly opening in Ljubljana. A new restaurant called Hedonist has recently opened its doors in the Trubarjeva ulica street. What is special about it is that its menu changes weekly based on the availability of seasonal ingredients. www.facebook.com/HedonistRestaurant A café called Social Club Ljubljana has opened in the Prule area. Just like Ljubljana represents a meeting point of different Slovenian regions, the rich, moist and delicious cake named after it represents a meeting point of Slovenia’s Alpine, Mediterranean, and Pannonian cuisines. Its major ingredients include various squashes, chestnuts, honey, buckwheat, and figs, and it contains no artificial sweeteners or preservatives. The cake is available from the Central Market’s colonnade and several other locations: the SEM and Nebotičnik cake shops, the Platana bistro, and the Torta Ljubljana cake shop in the Čopova ulica street. Magical Ljubljana in December

Christmas atmosphere revives Ljubljana to its fullest: festive stalls, aroma of mulled wine and mead, and an extensive event programme “December in Ljubljana”. Thanks to Christmas lights and the fairy-illuminated castle, as well as the fact that many consider the city centre as the main gathering place, the place gives an impression of a pleasant, comfortable and bright living room. Also this year, the festive lights will turn on in Ljubljana on 3 December, thus symbolically opening the vivid December happening. Traditionally, numerous events will take place: the Festive Fair, the Good Fairy, the Christmas Concert,

St. Nicholas Procession, street theatre performances, music programme at several squares around the city, the organ grinder performances and finally the New Year’s Eve concerts and fireworks. Grandpa Frost processions will complement varied

Getting to Know Ljubljana Castle through Time Machine Ljubljana Castle, the symbol of the Slovenian capital, the most visited tourist spot – every year it has about a million visitors – introduces new, interesting and attractive tourist programmes for 2014. A guided tour will take visitors through the so-called Time Machine – six periods marking the history of Ljubljana Castle and the town itself. At each “station” a personality from that period will greet the visitors and give them explanations. The walk starts in the Roman times and continues on to the 10th century, when St. George involves into the pagan-Christian conflict and beats the terrible dragon. The Middle Ages lead to the castle of Emperor Frederick III of Habsburg and to a courtly lady. The representative of Napoleon’s Illyrian Provinces is of course a soldier. 18th century represents a dark period of the Castle, with a prison and convicts, while 20th century includes some big names, among them being the most renowned Ivan Hribar, the former mayor of Ljubljana.

The Beloved Ljubljana in Short Films

A nice way to get a first impression of Ljubljana is to watch some of the short promotional films about it. The city’s currently main promotional film, released under the title of The Beloved Ljubljana in September this year, just before the EuroBasket 2013 championship, shows Ljubljana through the eyes of a nice young couple and presents it as a

dynamic city with a youthful soul. The film is available for viewing in the Multimedia section of the Visit Ljubljana website, which also contains a tourism feature documentary Letters from Ljubljana, a short film series about Central Slovenia entitled Ljubljana: When the Region Comes to Life, which focuses on Central Slovenia’s culinary delights, culture, recreational and shopping opportunities, etc., and a short film entitled Ljubljana Living with Yoga, which presents Ljubljana as a city rich in green

spaces and full of people living a healthy lifestyle. www.visitljubljana.com This summer, a rap music video dedicated to Ljubljana appeared on YouTube. The video and the song, entitled Feelin Fine – LJ Anthem, were created by Phlegma & FreakyFreek, the former a student of cognitive science from Vienna and the latter a communicology student from Arnhem, who met each other in Ljubljana while taking part in the Erasmus student exchange. ‘This is a tribute to

Ljubljana,’ says FreakyFreek. ‘We’ve had a wonderful Erasmus exchange here and wanted to show the love we have ... for it.’

30th International Biennial of Graphic Arts Since mid-September, Ljubljana has been hosting one of the world’s oldest and most important events of its kind, the International Biennial of Graphic Arts, whose establishment in 1955 placed Ljubljana and visual art in Slovenia firmly on the world map. The Biennial will be running until 24 November.

Kinodvor Cinema; Photo: N. Žgank

The Year of Cinema: Kinodvor Cinema’s 90th Anniversary Back in 1923, a city cinema called Ljubljanski dvor was built in Ljubljana on the model of sumptuous cinema theatres opening in cities across Europe in the 1920s. Later, the cinema underwent numerous changes in keeping with the demands of changing times, leading to the foundation of the present Kinodvor cinema, which is dedicated to showcasing the best in contemporary film production to discerning cinema audiences. To mark its 90th anniversary, Kinodvor is running a year-long project called The Year of Cinema. The cinema now known as Kinodvor has a diverse history in terms of programme. In the 1920s and 1930s, it was an ‘elite cinema’ showing top-quality European and American films. In the 1940s, following a period of Italian occupation, its programme was under the influence of Soviet ideology while in the 1950s it screened B-movie gangster films and westerns. After that, it first became a famous eroticfilm cinema called Sloga, then a second-run cinema, and finally the art cinema that we know today. It is one of the few cinemas to be able to pride itself in having gone all the way from silent to digital cinema. Today, it operates

under the auspices of the City Municipality of Ljubljana. Between 15 October 2013 and the autumn of 2014, the Kinodvor cinema will be running a project called The Year of Cinema. The project, involving collaborations between various institutions based in Ljubljana and beyond whose activities are related to film culture, will feature a rich programme of events including exhibitions, film screenings, meetings, and presentations enriched by reflections of the past and a view to the future. If interested, please visit the Kinodvor website to keep up to date with the programme of events. www.kinodvor.org Aliki Kalagasidu

The 30th International Biennial of Graphic Arts, whose main exhibition, entitled Interruption, is curated by Deborah Cullen PhD, offers a reconsideration of the nature of graphic processes and illustrates how renowned graphic artists of our time respond to modern communication processes and tools. The main exhibition venues include the International Centre of Graphic Arts, Švicarija, the Jakopič Promenade, and the Ljubljana Museum of Modern Art. In celebration of its 30th edition, the Biennial includes an exhibition on its history held at the Cankarjev Dom Gallery. The exhibition, entitled The Biennial of Graphic Arts, Serving You Since 1955, is curated by Petja Grafenauer PhD. The Biennial also includes two exhibitions of work by the winners of its 2011 edition, Regina José Galindo and Miklós Erdély, and several accompanying exhibitions and other events. 90 Years of the Slovene Ethnographic Museum The Slovene Ethnographic Museum, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, is well known as a modern museum dedicated to blending the traditional with the contemporary. The Slovene Ethnographic Museum is a museum ‘about people, for people’, a museum of cultural identities, and a link between the past and the present, between traditional and modern culture, between our own culture and other cultures, and between the natural environment and civilisation. The museum offers an insight into both traditional and modern mass and pop culture in Slovenia and the diaspora, reports on non-European cultures, and presents the material and intangible cultural heritage of everyday and festive life in the past. The museum’s permanent exhibitions Between Nature and Culture and I, We and Others: Images of My World present, through ethnological collections, stories about people, offering visitors an opportunity to reflect on the world around them and the life they lead. Slovenian Philharmonic to Host Top Music Events This Season As a central Slovenian musical institution with over 310 years of tradition, the Slovenian Philharmonic will host top music events also this season. High-profile events and varied programme have for many years been a guarantee for top quality artistic experience. Boasting rich history, the Slovenian Philharmonic is considered one of the oldest in the world. As a successor to the Academie Philharmonicorum dating from 1701, which musically enriched Ljubljana and built up its reputation, also in terms of architecture, this imposing building lies in an elite location at the Congress Square and importantly co-creates the image of the city. Over the years, many brilliant soloists and conductors have

enriched the concerts at the Slovenian Philharmonic; on the contrary, its artists have performed at many well-established festivals worldwide. The tour with Anna Netrebko, whose concerts at Europe’s leading concert halls they accompanied in 2012, was a major success. The Slovenian Philharmonic is entering the new period with big plans. With the music director of this season being conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson, the Philharmonic

will host many other renowned conductors (Sir N. Marriner, V. Fedoseyev, M. Pintscher, E. Villaume, U. Lajovic etc.) choir conductors (K. Putniņš, S. Layton, R. Rasmussen etc.) and soloists (F. Say, V. Lisitsa and A. von Oeyen – piano, B. Fink – mezzo-soprano, A. Margulis – violin, M. Bogdanovic – violoncello etc.). Among other things the Philharmonic this season commemorates the 200th birth anniversary of R. Wagner and

Tito Put on Display – Face of Yugoslavia

Together with GR – Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre, TI&To Company premieres the exhibition about Marshal Josip Broz Tito, the President of former Yugoslavia. The exhibition takes you to the times of post-war Yugoslavia. It presents Josip Broz – Tito as a personality, an icon and historical figure of a time, which cannot be, vis-à-vis history, avoided, erased and forgot.

Tito on a State Visit; Photo: Ti&To Archive

The exhibition about Tito is the first and the largest exhibition about the icon of the 20th century in Slovenia. It is space-related to former Yugoslavia, the federation of six republics, including Slovenia and addresses Tito’s aficionados, who recall the times of him leading the common country with nostalgia, as well as his opponents and detractors, since it presents Tito as a personality and not as an ideological figure of the former system. “People like Tito or not. Some don’t. People like the 20th century or not. Some don’t. But they belong together, this man and this century”, wrote Fitzroy MacLean in Sunday Times in May 1962. The exhibition entitled Tito – The Face of Yugoslavia will be put on display in ten

galleries, consisting of over 300 photographs and exhibits from private archives, the Protocol of the Republic of Slovenia, MIJ Archive in Belgrade, Slovenian Railway Museum, Technical Museum of Slovenia and the Delo Newspaper. This is complemented by video materials from private archives and from the Slovenian Film Archive, works of art from the National Museum of Contemporary History, Tito’s escort vehicles and a philatelic collection. You will learn about Tito and Yugoslavia, Tito’s collaborators, the Relay of Youth, the Non-Aligned Movement, Tito’s travels, Tito’s vehicle fleet, Tito and the Post of Yugoslavia, artistic representations of Tito, his New Year’s Eve celebrations and the funeral of all funerals. Complemented by a

library, it contains a review of the Slovenian, Yugoslavian and foreign literature about Tito, in printed as well as electronic version, and a souvenir shop. This historical, iconographic, interesting, educational and nostalgic exhibition will be put on display from 7 November 2013 to 28 February 2014. www.tito-razstava.si Marjana Lavrič

Ljubljana Castle Refreshed by Spring 2014 Back in 1979, the renovation of the Ljubljana Castle started right in the »M Wing«, which until recently housed the Blue and White halls, better known as the Wedding halls. More than 30 years of use and over 700 weddings a year were a good reason enough for a makeover. The works are due to be completed in March

2014 and will transform the two halls, henceforth named Red and Blue, into a versatile and even more appealing function space. The solemn elements of this castle wing will be softly intertwined with its architectural heritage, light and freshness of the colours. The premises will open up to the courtyard and therefore emphasise the historical environment of the Ljubljana Castle. www.ljubljanskigrad.si

More comfort at CD Congress Centre Ljubljana

Linhart Hall; Photo: B. Žalar

CD Congress Centre Ljubljana has skipped a proper summer break again as, for the past few years, the venue has been undergoing an extensive gradual renovation, technological upgrading and maintenance works in the warmest months. Bearing the comfort of visitors in mind, the seats in the two largest auditoria - Gallus and Linhart halls, have been replaced, with a thorough refurbishment alongside. Gallus Hall (1545 fixed seats) is set to start the forthcoming season shining in a new splendour. The parquet floor in the stalls as well as the dress and upper circles have been sanded, the marble walls polished, and the new seats installed. The overhaul of Linhart Hall (562 seats) has been even more extensive. The walls are now repainted, the stage portal renovated, conduit pipes and electrical installation replaced, equipment upgraded, the latest ventilation and air-conditioning system built in and an advanced lighting system installed. The highly comfortable new seats were the final touch. The value of this year’s investment is two

million Euros. Other details of the makeover comprise improved elevator access to the panoramic, topfloor CD Club, as well as the refurbished CD Information Centre and Box Office. The construction works have been concluded by the end of August as scheduled, right on time for the busy autumn congresses and events season, which has also featured the Congress of the Paediatric Rheumatology European Society (PRES) with 1,000 delegates – this year the largest in Ljubljana. The Centre’s recent genesis, to be continued next year with the construction of additional breakout rooms, will surely be appreciated by the foreign and local public, whose total number in just over 30 years of operations has reached as many as 15 million visitors / delegates. www.cd-cc.si Tatjana Radovič

Nox Hotel; Photo: D. Briški

Nox - a Novelty on the Hotel Design Scene The Roman Goddess of the night, Nox, brings a breeze of fresh air to the Ljubljana boutique hotels’ portfolio Ljubljana’s latest hotel offer has been enriched this September by Nox, another trendy property in the design line, which already seduces travellers by its refined style, modern comfort and aesthetic luxury. The prime concept of this 4-star boutique hotel is to perfectly blend business and pleasure through an original approach aiming to create an experiential showcase of the “made in Slovenia” hotel interior design. What distinguishes Nox from other hotels is its interior decoration. Each of the 24 rooms is unique in design and character and guests can choose the one that suits their taste best when booking. Several acclaimed Slovenian designers and architects had a total creative freedom in developing the room concept, which ranges from minimalist to baroque-styled, as well as vintage,

more romantic, or even a saltern room. All the hotel rooms are double, but differ in layout and size, ranging from 24 to 45 sq m. The hotel’s construction follows one of the green principles of sustainable development: the use of local materials. The wish was also to create a raw yet plain and attractive appearance. As a result, the interior blends three primary materials - oak wood, concrete and metal. The Nox Hotel is well situated close to the ring road, on the way from the city centre to the airport, which makes it perfect for business travellers and those coming to Ljubljana for a city break by car. In a nutshell: the aim to reach diversity in ideas and experiences has been accomplished and Ljubljana can now proudly present another jewel in its design palette. www.hotelnox.com Tatjana Radovič

Incentive Programmess With a csr Twist Among the Ljubljana-based DMCs, there is one specifically that takes corporate social responsibility as a creative challenge and has developed a range of attractive programmes. These allow meeting planners and delegates at their events to contribute to specific causes and give something back to the local community.

Bicycle Factory; Photo: iDMC Photo Archive

In search of new and original incentive programmes, iDMC stretch their imagination to the limits. Green is the new black is “la parole du jour”. The CSR programmes bring an added value to the fun and team building part of incentive travel, however there are more and more congress organizers that incorporate them as an optional activity on the day prior to the event.

Bearing the social element in mind, iDMC offer various programmes with a CSR touch. Inspired by a beautiful natural environment, participants under the guidance of a painter can discover their artistic talent at a charity painting event. The artwork is either donated to a chosen institution or put up for an auction with the returns donated for a purpose. Other options comprise preparing the food for the homeless, building a child’s bicycle and donating it to children in need, or by helping run an animal shelter: no matter what the activity is, it

will make another person or being happy. Adding philanthropic efforts to incentive programmes or conferences and business events benefit the community as well as a company or association and all the participants on top. iDMC recognised this added value and has well integrated the CSR elements to their offer. This component can definitely help making an unforgettable event in Ljubljana and Slovenia - one that creates an experience of a lifetime for the participant. www.idmc.eu Vesna Klemenčič

Taste Kamnik Project Offers New Culinary Experiences Would you like to return to the times of lords? Taste freshly caught chamois, the same way as once the hunters from Kamniška Bistrica Valley? Do you want to join the herdsmen on Velika planina and decorate a special type of cheese? Then Taste Kamnik is the right answer! As part of the culinary project Taste Central Slovenia, Taste Kamnik includes a selection of dishes indicating social diversity of this area, from the rural nobility to the Kamnik townspeople and even traditions of the region’s monasteries. Under the leadership of renowned ethnologist Prof. Dr. Janez Bogataj and the expert committee, Kamnik Tourism and Sports Agency selected seven dishes typical for the Kamnik area: Trnič Cheese, Chamois Soup, Tuhinj Stuffing, Princely Venison Goulash, Ursuline Convent

Cream Layer Cake, Rušovc Tips and Pinecone Liquor and Kamnik Whole-Grain Mustard. These are supplemented by a wider selection of dishes, which represents a fusion of traditional and modern cuisine of Kamnik. This makes Kamnik a recognizable destination on the culinary map of Central Slovenia. Several Kamnik restaurants are actively involved in the project, which means that their offer includes Taste Kamnik dishes. Further information about the dishes and the origin can be found at www.okusikamnika.si. Urška Kolar

E-Tourist – New Mobile Application For Modern Trip Planning From September on, visitors to the Heart of Slovenia, the area east and southeast of Ljubljana, including GEOSS - the geometric centre of Slovenia – and the coastal area of Slovenian Istria can use a new mobile application E-Tourist. The application is suitable for individuals and smaller groups, as it provides an experience of a tour with a qualified guide. E-Tourist, a new mobile application, enables you to enter your interests (e.g. culture, nature, sports, cuisine etc.), the time available, means of transport and any other specific needs and desires into your smart phone. The system then presents proposals adapted to your requirements. The application that complies with your wishes leads you from one point to another by using the GPS navigation. If you are interested in recreation, the application will find the options for sports activities in the vicinity. What is more, you will also be advised where in the

surroundings you can rest, have fun or do some sightseeing. Accompanied by photos, descriptions of attractions are given in the form of written and spoken texts in several languages. Each visitor can make a comment about the attraction visited. Their opinion is then taken into account when preparing the tours for future visitors. This allows the tourism service providers to improve the offer. The application is available in English and free of charge for Android, BlackBerry, Microsoft Windows Phone and iOS. www.e-turist.si Ana Savšek

Archaeological Park on Outskirts of Ljubljana Renewed On the outskirts of the Central Slovenia, at the pass on the road Logatec-Ajdovščina, only a half-hour drive from Ljubljana, archaeological park Ad Pirum (Hrušica) is located. Before the 2,000th anniversary of the Roman Emona the park was renovated under the leadership of the National Museum and is thus considered a must-see. Wall remains are part of the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum defence line, which led from the Croatian Reka River on the south to Soča Valley on the north. The park can be seen individually or as part of a guided tour. There are numerous routes in the park; those with good physical condition can go on a lighter, approximately two-hour long hike along the late Roman wall south of the fort. Those who have less time or prefer an easier walk, can follow new information boards, or learn more about the park virtually, on the digital info point, which has been arranged in

the museum since the last summer. The National Museum of Slovenia organizes a number of workshops for young and old, where one can try Roman clothing, weigh the weapons, compete in trigon – ancient Roman ball game – make Roman wreaths and Roman military diplomas, compete in the javelin throw, or test oneself in swordsmanship. Also the First Italic Legion is present on some occasions: fully dressed, the members of Legio I Italic Association present a typical Roman fight. www.nms.si Mateja Kregar Gliha

Urban Creativity in Ljubljana Urban creativity is part of everyday life in Ljubljana and can be seen almost on every step. Ljubljana boasts the fact of being on the top of the list in terms of number of artists per capita. Artists from the field of design, photography and art gather into different creative centres, zones, associations and initiatives. New ideas, products, connections, workshops and fairs are constantly being developed... Same as the trees put on bright red and yellow hues, also Ljubljana clads in fuchsia in October. This is the colour of the Month of Design, which takes place from 7 October to 7 November. Next to the awards, numerous lectures, workshops and exhibitions take place – for casual visitors perhaps the most interesting being The

Highlights of Slovenian Design, a retrospective exhibition of award-winning products of the last decade. The Month of Design represents the door into the world of industrial design covering areas of architecture, interior, transport, sport and leisure, electronics, industry, medicine and even food. This year, a unique culinary event

called Taste the Design took place. www.monthofdesign.com Part of Slovenian design can also be caught at the exhibition entitled Silent Revolutions – Contemporary Design in Slovenia. It is a cross-section of Slovenian production design over the last two decades. On the tour starting at the 2011 London Exhibition Design Festival 2011, the exhibition has showcased also Slovenian products, such as sailing boats, skis, bikes, chairs, shoes, lights and much more. www.silentrevolutions.si Another point of interest is the already known ARTish (www.

artish.si), a festival which in winter moves from the streets into indoor venues. Most of the times, it takes place at the Šiška Cinema Centre of Urban Culture www.kinosiska.si. Another venue is the Španski borci Culture Centre, where several times a month numerous creative workshops with different creative teams take place. www.spanskiborci.si Ljubljana also boasts a team called Creative Moments, which monthly organizes free morning lectures for creative people at various locations around the city. www.creativemornings.com/cities/lj Tjaša Janovljak

2013 Pop-Up Home to Open Soon

For the second time in a row, the pop-up home, a temporary store with a new concept of selling products of contemporary Slovenian design, will open on Tobačna 5 in Ljubljana in late November. For a month, the pop-up home will become a working space of cooperation and integration. Same as last year, fresh products of young Slovenian artists linked to the contemporary forms of labour will be presented. On

the premises of the pop-up home lectures on new design approaches and new economic models will be given, followed by the experimental culinary evenings, concerts and events bringing together designers, economists, and visitors to popup home. All products on display will also be used all the time throughout the event, which will allow convincing visitors of their value on spot. The store will be open from 28 November to 23 December 2013. www.popupdom.si

SiTi ARTstore is a new of young artists on the premises of the Crystal Palace in BTC Shopping Centre in Ljubljana. The shop with an added value offers young artists an opportunity to exhibit and sell their products. The SiTi ARTstore will take care of the development and visibility of Slovenian professional or amateur artists and creatives from different art fields, such as painting, printing, drawing, illustrating, sculpturing, photography, fashion and jewellery. The concept of the store is on the one hand to bring together young artists at the beginning of their career and provide them with space for their product presentations and contact with potential buyers, and on the other hand allow buyers an insight into the work of the new generation of promising Slovenian artists and

buy art at prices that are more acceptable than those at other galleries. In addition to selling the products of young Slovenian artists, the SiTi ARTstore will also act as an educational platform for roundtable discussions on current issues in the field of art and as a venue of cultural and artistic events. Occasionally the shop will organize exhibitions, art auctions, workshops with various artists, events on the theme of investing in contemporary art, lectures on the Slovenian art market and fashion shows. www.sitiartstore.eu Špela Golčer
