MAIN ATTRACTION TRAIL
MALTA St. Peter’s Pool The secluded rocky beach at Delimara Point is a unique natural pool known for its crystal-clear waters. Marsaxlokk This small town in the southwest of Malta, is a locally famous fishing village. Visit Marsaxlokk on a Sunday, when fishermen sell freshly caught fish at the open market. The Three Cities Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua offered shelter and protection for many of the original settlers of the Maltese Islands. The Three Cities sit directly opposite Valletta and offer spectacular views of the capital city. St. John’s Co-Cathedral The jaw dropping interior elaborately adorned by Mattia Preti is widely considered to be the best example of baroque style anywhere in Europe. The magnificent Cathedral is also home to the only signed painting by Caravaggio. Casa Rocca Piccola Explore this 16th century palace, which provides a unique insight into the customs and traditions of the Maltese nobility over the last 400 years. Grandmaster’s Palace The palace was one of the first buildings in the new city of Valletta founded by Grand Master Jean de Valette in 1566, a few months after the successful outcome of the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.

Upper Barrakka Gardens Visit these beatiful public gardens which offer a stunning panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and date back to 1661, when it was a private garden of the Italian Knights. Palazzo Parisio This magnificent Palace with beautiful surrounding gardens is rated one of Malta’s most opulent aristocratic homes. Sliema Once a fishing village, Sliema is now known as one of the main sjopping areas in Malta. Though you can drive to it, the town is just a 15-minute boat ride from the city of Valletta. Paceville Malta’s entertainment hub, Paceville, is located in St. Julian’s and boasts an abundance of nightclubs, bars and restaurants. Mosta Dome Located in one of the largest towns on the Maltese Islands, the Dome is associated with a miracle that took place during World War II Mdina The origins of Malta’s medieval capital, can be traced back to 700BC. Mdina is still home to Malta’s noble families and impressive palaces line its narrow, winding streets. Blue Grotto Take a trip to the picturesque Blue Grotto and its neighbouring system of caverns that mirror the stunning colours of the underwater flora.
Golden Bay Certified with the Blue and White Flag title, the sandy beach is one of the most popular beaches on the Maltese islands. Mellieha Bay Malta’s longest sandy beach stretching across 800m, is one of the most popular beaches for holiday makers. Dingli Cliffs For a spectacular sunset view, visit Dingli Cliffs which stands at 250 meters above sea-level.
COMINO Blue Lagoon One of the most picturesque locations on the islands, this small cove boasts turquoise shallow waters perfect for swimming, snorkelling and exploring by boat.
GOZO Cittadella Located in Gozo’s capital city, Victoria, the Citadella is an ancient fortified city that boasts spectacular views of the rest of the island. Ggantija Temples These are the oldest free-standing structures in the world, predating Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids by 1,000 years. Ramla Bay Known in Maltese as Ramla il-Ħamra (Red Sands), this is the biggest sandy beach on Gozo and is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world.

Valletta Trail
The Valletta Trail showcases the culture and history of the island’s capital - a UNESCO World Heritage site widely regarded as one of the world’s most concentrated historic areas. Valletta packs a punch with an abundance of elegant 16th century architecture, museums, restored fortresses and an opera house.

Bus Terminal The Valletta Bus Terminal is accessible from the main entrance to Valletta for departures that take visitors around Malta.
Upper Barrakka Gardens The beautiful public gardens offer a stunning panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and the Saluting Battery – see the guns fire every day at 12pm.
City Gate Designed by Renzo Piano, the impressive City Gate heralds the entrance to Valletta and marks the beginning of Republic Street.
Waterfront Valletta’s waterfront is made up of nineteen 250-year-old warehouses, built by Grand Master Pinto at the height of the baroque period in Malta.
Triton Fountain Just outside the walls of Valletta, on the site of a large conservatory measuring over 1,700 square meters, the recently renovated Triton Fountain is a must-see site.
Grand Harbour The Grand Harbour, also known as the port of Valletta, is a stunning natural harbour. Cruise ships dock into the harbour daily and ferry services to Sicily run throughout the day.
New Parliament Building Designed by the Shard’s architect - Renzo Piano - the exterior of the contemporary New Parliament Building reflects the limestone that the Maltese Islands are recognised for; the holes in the structure represent the erosion of limestone over time.
Victoria Gate Built by the British in 1885 and named after Queen Victoria, Victoria Gate is the main entrance to the city from the Grand Harbour.
Royal Opera House Open Air Theatre The iconic Royal Opera House was hit directly by a bomb during WW2. The ruins were redesigned by Renzo Piano in 2013 and it now functions as an Open Air Theatre. Lascaris War Rooms Built between 1940 and 1943, the Lascaris War Rooms are a series of underground tunnels and chambers from where the defence of Malta was conducted during the Second World War.

St John’s Co-Cathedral The stunning interior of St John’s CoCathedral, elaborately adorned in gold, is widely considered to be the best example of Baroque style in the world. The cathedral is home to the only signed Caravaggio painting. Grandmaster’s Palace and Armoury Built in 1571, the Grand Master’s Palace is the only place in the Mediterranean that is home to armoury in its location Lower Barrakka Garden The Lower Barakka Gardens offer a spectacular view of the Grand Harbour and the Siege Bell Memorial.
Casa Rocca Piccola This 16th century palace and private museum provides an exclusive insight into the customs and traditions of the Maltese nobility over the last 400 years and where the owners still reside - if you’re lucky you might even get to meet one of them. Is-Suq tal-Belt (City Market) Taste delicacies from around the globe at this 19th-century market hall on Merchants Street, which was recently renovated. Fort St Elmo Built in 1552, Fort Saint Elmo is home to the National War Museum. The Malta Experience; an interactive show that showcases the history of Malta, is found just outside the fort’s walls. St Paul’s Pro-Anglican Cathedral The Cathedral is built in the NeoClassical style, while the spire is a Valletta landmark and rises to over 60 metres. Manoel Theatre Experience a vibrant calendar of events at this important performing arts venue. The Theatre is named after Grand Master of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller, Fra António Manoel de Vilhena, who ordered its construction in 1731. Strait Street One of the most famous streets in Malta, Strait Street was the pinnacle of nightlife amongst American and British military men in the 19th century and is filled with bars and live music.

MALTA Qawra Reef Popular with beginner and intermediate divers, Qawra Reef is accessible by shore and has a maximum depth of 25-metres. Christ the Seafarer Statue The statue of Christ was placed on the seabed near Qawra to commemorate the visit of Pope John-Paul in 1990 – a spectacular sight underwater. Imperial Eagle Shipwreck This upright shipwreck was sunk in 1999. Divers can pose for a photo as a deep sea captain behind the ship’s steering wheel. P29 Shipwreck The former minesweeper and patrol boat was cleaned and scuttled in 2007 to serve as a dive site and an artificial reef, which is now home to fauna and fish. Tug Boat Rozi Rozi once operated in Valletta’s Grand Harbour. Today she serves as an artificial reef at a depth of 36-metres. Ghar Lapsi Reef The Għar Lapsi is great for beginners and new divers who can descend and explore the reef at 15-metres in quiet and shallow waters. Wied Iz-Zurrieq West Reef and Caves The West Reef and Caves are home to an abundance of marine life – discover the Bell Tower Cave during this dive.

Um El Faroud Shipwreck Adventurous divers can fully explore this shipwreck; discover the deck, multiple cabins and take the stairs to the engine room. Bristol Blenheim Bomber Dating back to WW2; this aircraft is located at a depth of 42-meters. The wings and engines are virtually intact and the aircraft quickly begins to take shape after decent. Delimara Point Reef This site is great for beginner divers as the underwater reef can be explored at 9-meters. HMS Maori Shipwreck Arguably Malta’s most famous and historical wreck, divers of all levels can discover this WW2 destroyer at a depth between 11 and 15 meters. Fort St Elmo The dive starts at 13-meters and finally drops off to a depth of 35-meters. Explore a variety of boulders and gullies. Coral Gardens Situated off the main promenade in Sliema, you can find spectacular tunnels and caverns teemed with varied marine life. Mercanti Reef Discover an artificial reef that leads to a sandy seabed just 15 to 20-meters off the shore.
GOZO MV Karwella The 1957 German passenger ferry, which was converted locally as a tourist pleasure cruise boat, was purposely sunk in 2006 to provide an artificial reef. Blue Hole Reportedly one of Jacques Cousteau’s favourite dive sites, you can see Gozo’s largest Groupers, Amberjacks, Barracuda and Tuna feeding here. Inland Sea and Tunnel Discover the 80m Inland Sea Tunnel – some divers like to carry a torch for added light to explore the tunnel walls. Azure Reef The fallen Azure Window calls to be discovered by divers; the impressive site boasts incredible rock formations, canyons and narrow passageways. Double Arch This world renowned double arch is a unique unique dive for experienced divers.

Renegades, 2017 This film made use of the deep tank at the Malta Film Studios to shoot various underwater scenes in a controlled environment. The action movie - starring J.K. Simmons – follows a team of Navy SEALs hired to salvage Nazi gold stored in a bank vault in a submerged town at the bottom of a Bosnian lake. Murder on the Orient Express, 2017 Featuring scenes of the Valletta Waterfront, the thriller is based on the book by Agatha Christie and stars Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp. Assassin’s Creed, 2016 Featuring scenes filmed in Valletta, Manoel Island and Fort Ricasoli, the action adventure film is based on the popular video game. The Promise, 2016 Filmed on the streets of Valletta for scenes set in the Ottoman Empire, the drama starred Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale. Captain Philips, 2013 Featuring scenes shot in the Malta Film Studio water tanks, the seas around Malta and the Malta Freeport, the thriller - starring Tom Hanks - is based on a true story of the 2009 Maersk Alabama hijacking. Kon-Tiki, 2012 Featuring scenes filmed at the Valletta Waterfront and in the Rinella water tanks, the adventure film tells the story of the legendary explorer Thor Heyerdal’s epic 4,300-mile crossing of the Pacific Ocean in 1947, in an effort to prove it was possible for South Americans to settle in Polynesia. Game of Thrones, 2011 Season one of Game of Thrones features scenes shot in Fort Ricasoli, Dominican Priory, Fort Manoel, Dwejra Gozo, Birgu and Mdina. Popeye, 1980 Featuring scenes from the custom built set in Mellieha, the set of this musical production starring Robin Williams is now known as ‘Popeye’s Village’ and is one Malta’s tourist attractions, filled with a number of colourful fun activities for young families. Midnight Express, 1978 Featuring scenes shot at the fort of St. Elmo, Midnight Express is based on William Hayes’ 1977 non-fiction book about his experiences as a young American student sent to prison for trying to smuggle hashish out of Turkey.

Clash of the Titans, 1981 Featuring scenes shot at the now collapsed Azure Window, the action adventure fantasy film is based on the Greek myth of Perseus.

MALTA
Skorba Temples, Mġarr Excavated in the early 1960’s, the Skorba temples are megalithic remains on the northern edge of Mġarr. Ta’ Ħaġrat Temples, Mġarr Ta’ Ħaġrat, excavated in the early 1920’s, is home to two well-preserved structures. The largest structure dates back to the earliest phases of megalithic construction – the Ġgantija phase (3600 – 3200 BC). National Museum of Archaeology, Valletta Located in Republic Street, The National Museum of Archaeology was built in 1571 and displays Baroque architecture. The museum exhibits a spectacular range of artefacts dating back to Malta’s Neolithic period (5000 BC) up to the Phoenician Period (400 BC). Kordin Temples, Paola The Kordin Temples were inhabited by many settlers throughout the years, including the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. Kordin III is the only temple from the three Corradino temples still standing today. Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, Paola Discovered in 1902, the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is an underground prehistoric burial site. The complex, made up of interconnecting rock-cut chambers, was used for centuries and the earliest remains found date back to 4000 BC. Tarxien Temples, Tarxien The Tarxien Temples are a complex of four megalithic structures built between 3600 and 2500 BC and re-used between 2400 and 1500 BC. Discovered in 1913 by local farmers, the site was extensively excavated between 1915 and 1919.

Ħaġar Qim Temples, Qrendi The temple of Ħaġar Qim stands on a hilltop overlooking the sea and the islet of Fifla. First excavated in 1839, the remains suggest the temples date back to the Ġgantija phase (3600 – 3200 BC). Ħaġar Qim was never completely buried, the tallest stones remained exposed and featured in 18th and 19th century paintings. Mnajdra Temples, Qrendi Located 500m from the Ħaġar Qim Temples, the Mnajdra Temples are a complex of three buildings facing a common oval forecourt. The first and oldest structure dates to the Ġgantija phase (3600 – 3200 BC). Borġ in-Nadur Temples, Birżebbuġa In use during the Temple Period (3600 – 2500 BC) and the Bronze Age (2400 – 700 BC), the Borġ in-Nadur prehistoric temple site boasts a unique location, situated between two valleys facing the Mediterranean Sea. Tas-Silġ, Marsaxlokk Overlooking Marsaxlokk Bay, Tas-Silġ is a multi-period sanctuary site from a breadth of eras from the Neolithic to the 4th century AD. Remains of large megalithic temples can be found scattered across the hilltop. Għar Dalam, Birżebbuġa Għar Dalam, meaning ‘Cave of Darkness’, is a prehistoric cave located in Birżebbuġa. Dwarf elephant, hippopotamus, deer and bear remains were found here, some of which were 500,000 years old. Ta’ Bistra Catacombs, Mosta Excavated in 1933, the Ta’ Bistra catacombs are the second largest set of catacombs in Malta. The site is 300 feet long and consists of 57 tombs laid out in 16 chambers.
St. Paul’s Catacombs, Rabat St. Paul’s Catacombs are the largest complex of interconnected, underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 7th century AD in Malta. Located on the outskirts of the old Roman capital Mdina, St. Paul’s Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. Domvs Romana Built around the remains of a rich, aristocratic roman town house, Domvs Romana was accidentally discovered in 1881. Although very little remains from the house itself, the intricate mosaics which survived for centuries – as well as the artefacts found within the remains – are testimony to the habits of a Roman aristocrat. St. Agatha’s Catacombs St. Agatha’s Catacombs contain a series of remarkable murals dating back to the 12th to 15th century. According to legend, this was the hiding place of St Agatha when she fled Sicily.

Gozo Museum of Archaeology, Victoria The Gozo Museum of Archaeology illustrates the cultural history of Gozo from prehistoric times to the early modern period. Ġgantija Temples, Xagħra The Ġgantija Temples are the oldest free-standing monuments in the world, created 1,000 years before the famous Egyptian pyramids of Giza. The temples are a unique architectural masterpiece and testify to an exceptional prehistoric culture renowned for its remarkable architectural, artistic and technological achievements.

The Pilgrimage Trail showcases the most beautiful churches and religious sites across the archipelago. Malta is believed to be the first country to be converted to Christianity, when St Paul was shipwrecked on the Islands in AD 60. Between the 16th and 18th centuries Malta was ruled by the Knight’s of St.John and still today remains one of the most devoutly Catholic countries in the world.

MALTA Sanctuary of Sacro Cuor, Sliema Dedicated to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the church was built in 1877. The Chapel of Our Saviour, Kalkara The Chapel of Our Saviour was used as a burial site for the nephew of Pope Alexander VII in 1676. In 1798, Mattia Preti’s artwork was stolen by French invaders, and a replacement was painted by Francesco Madiona which is on display in the chapel today. Chapel of St. George Preca, Hamrun The chapel is dedicated to St. George Preca, the founder of M.U.S.E.U.M, a society established in Malta to help local inhabitants understand the Catholic faith. All children who wish to be confirmed have to attend M.U.S.E.U.M up to four days a week until the age of thirteen. St. Paul’s Church and Grotto, Rabat It is believed that when St. Paul was shipwrecked on the island of Malta in A.D. 60, he was given refuge in this grotto in Rabat. St. Paul’s Church is dedicated to the saint, and now sits above the grotto. St Paul’s Catacombs and St Agatha’s Catacombs Situated near St Paul’s Grottos, these 2000 year old Christian burial grounds are interconnected, underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to 8AD Laferla Cross, Siggiewi Laferla Cross, found on top of a hill in Siggiewi, gives a unique view of Malta. On Good Friday, the path and hill leading to the Cross are candle lit, creating a special atmosphere for prayer and reflection. Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady, Mosta During World War II, the Luftwaffe dropped three bombs on the Mosta Dome. and two of them deflected without exploding. One 500kg high explosive bomb pierced the rotunda and entered the church, where a congregation of more than 300 people were awaiting early evening mass. The bomb bounced across the floor and did not explode, which was interpreted as a miracle by the Maltese.

St. Paul’s Cathedral, Mdina The cathedral was founded in the 17th century, the land is believed to have been originally occupied by the palace of St. Publius; the governor that greeted St. Paul when he arrived in Malta. St. Augustine Church, Valletta The present church was built by Giuseppe Bonnici in 1765. One of the artefacts found in the first church was a 16th Century painting depicted by the famous artist Mattia Preti. Basilica of St. Dominic, Valletta The newest church on this site was opened in 1815 and is one of three parishes in the capital city of Valletta. St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta The jaw dropping interior, elaborately adorned by Mattia Preti, is widely considered to be the best example of baroque style in Europe. The magnificent Cathedral is also home to the only signed Caravaggio painting in the world. Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Valletta The grand 42-meter high oval dome of the Basilica dominates the entire skyline of Valletta. The main attraction within the walls is a painting of Our Lady of Mount Carmel dating to the 17th century. St Paul’s Shipwreck Church, Valletta Saint Paul the Apostle is considered the spiritual father of the Maltese; his shipwreck in Malta is described in Acts 28:1 of the New Testament. Designed by Girolamo Cassar, the church was completed in 1582. Our Lady of Victory, Valletta This was the first church building in Valletta and built to commemorate the victory of the Knights of the Order of St John and the Maltese over the Ottoman invaders in 1565. The church is built on the site where a religious ceremony was held to inaugurate the laying of the foundation stone of Valletta in 1566.
GOZO
Chapel of St Demetrius, Għarb St. Demetrius chapel is located just outside the village of Gharb and is the only church on the Maltese Islands dedicated to the saint. Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Qala The main attraction of the 9th century chapel is the altarpiece featuring a painting of God extending his protection over the Virgin Mary. Cathedral of the Assumption, Gozo Located inside the Cittadella, the Cathedral of the Assumption doesn’t have a structured dome but the painting of the ceiling creates a three-dimensional effect. Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict visited the Cathedral when they visited Gozo. Tas-Salvatur Hill Discover the statue of the risen Christ on TasSalvatur Hill, which boasts beautiful views of Gozo. Ta’ Pinu Hill Located opposite the sanctuary of Ta’ Pinu in in the village of Gharb, 14 marble statues on the hill represent the Via Crucis. St George’s Basilica This historic Baroque church is situated in the middle of Victoria and was built between 1672 and 1678. The adjoining museum exhibit treasures belonging to St George’s Basilica and other Gozitan historical and cultural artefacts. Basilica of Ta Pinu, Gharb In 1883, Karmni Grima heard a voice asking her to recite three Hail Marys’ as she passed the church. Over the following years miracles in the area were attributed to the Virgin Mary, to whom the church is dedicated. The church is now a place of pilgrimage for the Maltese and has been visited by Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict. The nearby farmhouse where Karmini lived, has become a museum about her life and death.
