W
elcome to the 51st annual McCall Winter Carnival! This event is very special to our community. You may not know it, but the inspiration for Winter Carnival actually dates back to 1924 when the town created the Payette Lakes Sports Carnival to beat the winter doldrums.
Approximately 2,000 people attended the first Winter Carnival in 1924.
Events included dog and snowshoe races, ski jumping, horse ski-jouring, and a tug-o-war where the prize was a box of oranges.
The Sports Carnival eventually evolved into an “Ice Break-Up Contest. A person could purchase a ticket and enter a guess as to what day, hour, and minute the ice on Payette Lake would break up in the spring.

The Payette Lakes Sports Carnival lasted several years, but began to fade out. The last contest was held in 1941 and ended as gambling became illegal.
In 1965, the community rallied to bring back a winter festival to McCall with a two-day event focused on skiing that drew regional visitors to the area. Since that time, the McCall Winter Carnival has continued to grow and expand into the 10-day festival we know today. Some of the festivities you’ll enjoy include fireworks, the famous Mardi Gras Parade, ski races, live music, Sharlie Plunge, Monster Dog Pull and of course the spectacular Idaho State Snow Sculpture Championship.
We are excited to welcome you to McCall and share the magic of Winter Carnival with you!

Winter Carnival
Spectator’s Guide
.................................................................................................................................................................. You made it to Winter Carnival! Now what? This 10-day extravaganza can be a bit overwhelming at the onset. What events should you attend? What are the must-do activities for the kiddos? Where do you go to hear live music? Read on.
FIRST WEEKEND
Day two of Carnival keeps the fun going with the biggest event of the 10day celebration…the Mardi Gras Parade. Arrive early for the best views.
If you have little ones, you won’t want to miss the Children’s Torchlight Parade. The parade is open to little ones of all ages, and kicks off at 6:30 pm Friday and ends in Depot Park.
After the parade, head to the McCall Golf Course for the “Flashpoint” Snowbike Race and watch competitors speed around a 1 mile racetrack.
Opening Ceremonies begin 7 pm Friday, January 29th with a spectacular fireworks show. Immediately following the Torchlight Parade, the McCall Fire Department lights the official Winter Carnival bonfire that signifies the opening of Winter Carnival. The opening ceremonies and Fireworks Show over Payette Lake should not be missed.
Page 6
For another dose of adrenaline, stop by Alpine Village for Sharlie’s Plunge, an annual fundraiser where participants dive into a freezing cold pool of water…brrrr.
Sunday, sneak in a morning of fun at the Monster Dog Pull, arguably one of the most hilarious events at Winter Carnival. Watch as dogs of all shapes and sizes compete by pulling weighted sleds down a racetrack!
Snap some photos of the newly completed Idaho State Snow Sculptures.
MIDWEEK
The pace may be slower but midweek is not without plenty to enjoy.
Tempt your palate at one of three Rupert’s Restaurant Winemaker Dinners, or attend the McCallDonnelly Education Foundation’s annual Chocolate and Spirits Tasting.
The McCall Starz On Ice is one of the most spectacular productions of the year. This ice skating extravaganza features world-renowned figure skaters and McCall Figure Skating Club members.
Uncrowded ski slopes await you during Carnival week. SECOND WEEKEND
Festivities are still in full swing on the final weekend of Carnival.
Downtown is bustling with Main Stage Music, Beer Garden and Vendor Court. The Snowmobile Fun Run or Nordic lessons at Ponderosa State Park are excellent opportunities to enjoy the surrounding scenery.

Who Is Sharlie?
Deep in the crystal waters of Payette Lake a monster lurks! The legend of Sharlie dates back to the early 1900’s when loggers reported seeing a scaly-skinned serpent with a dinosaur-type head and a long scaly tail.
Some sightings described a reptilian-like creature 30 to 40 feet long.
Since then she has become an unofficial symbol of McCall. Sharlie was one of the very first snow sculptures created for the inaugural Winter Carnival in 1965. She has been recreated in snow, used as a signature entry in the Mardi Gras Parade and has added imagination and mystery to the area folklore. Will you be lucky enough to see Sharlie?
