TGIF FREE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

McCall is a quirky, unique little town. And a little town that feels not so little anymore…especially in the summer months. As we see more and more people discover this little slice of heaven, as the traffic gets heavier, as the lines get longer, and as our businesses work double and triple overtime to try and help every single person, we want to savor the things that make this place special. It isn’t anything fancy. It isn’t anything trendy. It is the handmade, homemade, slower pace, room to breathe feeling you get in McCall that keeps people coming back. It is taking the time to enjoy the good stuff. And the good stuff takes time. We invite you to explore “Simply McCall” by visiting visitmccall.org/simply-mccall. This is our ode to all the little things we love about this community. Here you will find ways to help sustain (sign the McCall Promise), share the love (Keep McCall Kind initiative), recreate responsibly, and find a few local tips on how to navigate everything from our pace of life to town deer to dog etiquette to downtown parking. We hope you enjoy the sunshine and all that makes this place Simply McCall.

. There are ninety-nine holes of golf to play between Cascade and Council. That is an impressive number on its own, but pair that with stunning scenery that ranges from lakefront tee boxes to fairways tucked into old growth forest and it is obvious the McCall area is a golfer’s dream. Even if you have played each course many times, there are still new approaches to try, new angles to play, and new memories to be made. Get to know our area golf courses then start packing that golf bag and get out there! Continued page 8 6

Cascade Golf Course Tucked next to Lake Cascade, this 9-hole course may just be the most scenic in the area. Each hole offers beautiful views of the lake, but we love #6 for its exciting tee shot over the water. Starting on a bluff above this par 4, a solid drive is required to carry the water. Women can play the forward tee, but we recommend taking a shot at playing from the tips on this hole!

Jug Mountain Ranch One of the things that sets Jug Mountain Ranch apart is the challenging mix of terrain that makes up the course design. From meadow to forest, natural water hazards to bunkers, Jug Mountain Ranch serves up stunning scenery and exhilarating play. Plus, it isn’t uncommon to see a moose, elk, deer, or fox along the way. Built within a private residential community, Jug Mountain Ranch is a public course that has a country club experience. In fact, the course was named by Golf Pass as one of the 25 courses for value in the U.S. in 2021. The Clubhouse serves as the Pro Shop and includes a full bar and restaurant with spectacular views of the course and valley below—a perfect place to relax after a round. 8

And the course is growing. Currently under construction and to be completed in 2023, a brand-new par 3 course will open adjacent to the current practice facility at Jug Mountain Ranch. This six-hole course is being designed by Don Knott, the original JMR course designer, and will offer a fun way to mix up your game, play with the family, and reserve for private tournaments and events.

LOCAL’S TIP: The weekly Nine and Dine (dinner and 9 holes) on Wednesdays and the Thursday Scramble (9-hole scramble) are the place to be on weekdays! Continued page 10

CHOICES

…How an unforgettable dinner begins. Every selection must lead to pure satisfaction— and here at The Narrows Steakhouse, that is our singular aim. Something decadent or something light? Surf or Turf? Full-bodied red or a floral white? Immerse yourself in the most authentic fine dining experience the West has to offer.

The Narrows Steakhouse. Brilliant choice.

Open Daily, 5–10pm. For reservations, call 208.630.0203 | ShoreLodge.com 501 West Lake Street | McCall, Idaho 83638

MOST CHALLENGING HOLE | #4 This long par 4 at Jug Mountain Ranch has earned the top spot for challenge for good reason. From the gold tees it is 487 yards, often into the wind. To carry the first bunker, it’s 240 yards. Just be sure you don’t go too far left or you’ll drop into the rough. The second shot should err to the right as well to avoid the bunkers below the green. While the hole appears narrow, it actually has a deceptively wide fairway. Don’t let the straight orientation of this hole fool you. The elevation changes and subtle slopes have #4 rated as the most difficult on the course.

Most Scenic Hole | #12 The backdrop to this hole is idyllic and brings it all together—a barn, a lovely pond, a creek, a snow-capped mountain. Any direction you look has a view worth soaking in. It is also a fun hole to play! Hole 12 is all about risk versus reward with a tee shot that takes you over a large pond. Be bold and go for the green at 310 yards or use a short iron to get you over the water down the left side with an easier second shot to the green.

Local’s Favorite | #16

Whitetail Club We can’t talk about golf without mentioning the stunning Whitetail Club. This private course is primarily for homeowners, but they do have limited tee times for guests of Shore Lodge. Book your stay at this iconic lakefront resort by visiting shorelodge.com. 10

This hole has it all: picture perfect views of Jughandle Mountain, a crisp mountain stream surrounding the green, elevation changes, a blind uphill, and a challenge. As a long par 5, this hole keeps you guessing. The tee shot is uphill with wetlands and out of bounds to the left and right of the fairway. The second shot is all downhill and while it is possible to get to the green in two shots, Boulder Creek has been known to steal a lot of golf balls in the attempt. Put simply, this hole embodies everything we love about golf and is hands down the most-talked about hole on the course. Continued page 14

Council Greens Golf Course Located just south of Council on Highway 55, this fun 9-hole, par 37, 3,236-yard course is a staple for locals. The course opened in 1963 and has been delighting golfers with views of the surrounding valley and its friendly, approachable vibe. This is a great stop for a quick nine or an outing with the entire family.

McCall Golf Course Tucked right in the heart of McCall just a few blocks from Payette Lake and a few blocks from Ponderosa State Park, the McCall Golf Course is 27 holes of bliss. Wildlife is abundant, conditions are always good, and the course boasts a vibrant golf culture. Banyans on the Green restaurant and bar offers a place to meet and mingle as the central gathering place.

Most Scenic Hole | Aspen #1

Originally built as an 18-hole course, the facility was expanded to add an additional 9 holes and now provides three 9-hole course options for players: Aspen, Birch, and Cedar. Play one or play them all. These 27 holes are also home to one of the biggest match play events in the Northwest…the McCall Amateur. The tournament is comprised of three separate competitions, junior, women, and men, that takes place over the course of a week each summer and draws golfers from ages 5 to 85.

With 27 holes to choose from, finding a favorite at McCall Golf Club is a tough choice, but Aspen #1 is a beauty. The 370-yard par 4 has a tree-lined fairway with a stunning view of Brundage Mountain and water features to the left of the fairway and green, which was rebuilt in 2016. If you are lucky, you may also see some of the resident deer wander through your tee shot adding to both challenge and aesthetic appeal to Aspen #1.

LOCAL’S TIP: McCall Golf Course offers a special reduced family

rate after 5pm. This is a great time to sneak in a round after a busy day or play a few holes with younger kids.

Most Challenging Hole | Birch #3 A bit of a challenge keeps you humble on the course. This par 3 has a blind uphill landing area and sits right in front of the restaurant deck. Between the elevation change and gallery watching your tee shot, Birch 3 is bit of a pressure cooker. 14

This fun little par 3 has received a lot of time and attention from the maintenance staff and has a green that plays like a dream. The hole has a slight uphill over water and you can always tell when someone hits a great shot on Aspen 8…it sits right next to the Snack Shack, a gathering place that adds a bit of comradery and a lot of fun to this hole. MeadowCreek

Osprey Meadows

Tamarack Resort announced in 2021 that the Located at the 45th parallel in New resort had acquired its former 18-hole Meadows, this 6,696-yard course championship golf course, Osprey Meadows. offers a thrilling round of golf. Plans for restoration and rehabilitation are MeadowCreek was actually underway with the intent to be open for the originally developed as 2023 season. For more information on the “Kimberland Meadows” and named project, visit tamarackidaho.com. after local pioneer and trapper William Kimberland who lived in the valley in the 1870s. The 18-hole golf course opened in 1983 and has been a gem in Meadows Valley ever since.

Most Challenging | #12 This long, uphill par 4 is flanked by out-of-bounds areas on both the right and left sides of the fairway so your first shot needs to be nice and straight. The large, elevated two-tiered green is protected by a hazard that crosses the fairway and is protected on both sides by mature stands of ponderosa pines. While the setting is certainly scenic, the green slopes severely from back to front making your final shots a true test of your short game.

Most Scenic | #14

Offering 1/2 day climbing adventures in Ponderosa State Park!

Dramatic is the only way to describe this hole. This par 4 has a blind tee shot and out-of-bounds along the left side of the fairway. At 200 yards, the fairway falls away dramatically downhill to the green. Picturesque Granite Mountain looms in the background for your second shot down the fairway making this one of our favorite scenic holes in the valley.

We all live for that one great shot and hole #15 is a challenging Par 5 that teases the opportunity for a great golf story. From the tee, the rough looms to the left up to the bridge. After the bridge, there is a hazard that runs the length of the fairway changing to out-of-bounds at about 150 yards to the green. On the second shot there is a long pond on the right. Golfers have to decide whether to go over the pond or around it to a narrow opening to the slightly elevated two-tier green. Birdies are possible (hello, elusive great shot!), but so are double bogies or worse. This is a hole you want to play again and again to test your luck and skill.

High-Mountain Gardening in McCall

a S a i s P h o t o g r a p hy

By McKenzie Kraemer

It isn’t that high-altitude gardening is impossible, it just takes a bit of know-how. Selecting plant varieties, finding ways to extend the growing season, and a lot of trial and error as to what works in this valley’s particular micro-climate can make gardening here a creative endeavor; an endeavor that is well worth the effort. From the flower baskets that hang on the lampposts in downtown McCall to the fresh produce available at the local farmers’ markets, there is ample opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the successes of a high mountain garden…and indulge in a little sunshine and hope of your own. A gardener is an eternal optimist. There is so much hope and expectation that comes with putting a seed in the ground. That optimism is coupled with a healthy dose of determination and grit when it comes to gardening in a high-altitude climate like McCall. Every flower that blooms here, every berry that ripens, every bean or pea or squash that is picked feels like a little victory.

21

I have a very vivid memory of picking raspberries with my grandpa as a kid. I remember running across his lawn to the garden and plucking the big red berries, rinsing them in the hose water, and sneaking a few before putting the rest into a bucket. Looking back, I imagined that I was probably about four or five years old. I am not sure when memories start, but I found a photo of my grandpa and me on that day – it is exactly like the experience in my head. The date stamp on the back of the photo puts me at about two and half years old; this might just be my very first memory. And maybe that is why gardening is so fascinating to me. Growing up, my mom always had a garden. My sister and I would pick snap peas, strawberries, and beans. We would help weed. We would squeal when little garter snakes would speed across the rows. My mom has carried that tradition on to this day – now her garden is here in McCall and my kids are old enough to help grandma pick those snap peas, strawberries, beans…and monster zucchini. Maybe one day my children will look back and find that their first memories are of vegetables and garter snakes. Gardening spans generations, differences, and taps into a caring, nurturing part of us that we carry on through the rest of our lives.

And that is when I realized I had no idea what I was doing. The idea of gardening is a lot easier than the action. So, I started simple, started paying attention, and started asking a ton of questions. Here is what I learned from a some amazing local gardeners:

The Timber Garden

“Sometimes I wonder if it hadn’t already been a hobby and both my husband and I hadn’t grown up with it…I wonder if we would have been as set on trying to garden?” But garden they do! Samantha and Tobin Orient have what can only be described as “garden goals.” As part of the Master Gardener program, Samantha is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to getting things to grow in this crazy climate. Her insight is invaluable and her ease in the garden is reassuring. “It isn’t that everything goes well all of the time,” she says. “We have definitely had our fair share of fails and panicked tomato covering episodes – but more things go right than you would think.” And those successes show. What started out as four raised beds and a 30 x 60-foot fenced area has now grown into a stunning 120 x 200-feet- and that doesn’t include the orchard. They have 26 fruit trees including peaches (yes, really!), sweet cherries, pears, and hybrid plums, as well as an impressive selection of berries including black raspberries, yellow raspberries, red raspberries, blueberries, and honeyberries. They also have powerhouse garden beds where they grow asparagus, carrots, beans, beets, bok choy, broccoli, broccoli rabe, buckwheat, garlic, kohlrabi, peas, potatoes, radishes, rhubarb, strawberries,

And while we love grandma’s garden, I decided last year that I needed one in my own backyard. I want to create the full experience, so my kids have ample opportunity to get dirty, grow things, and pick raspberries.

But getting to this point has been a labor of love. “It is all about the long game here,” Samantha says. “There are so many things you only have to do once,” things like building raised beds or putting in gravel paths. She also puts a lot of focus on perennials – both for beauty and food production. Establishing things like blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, rhubarb, and asparagus mean that you plant once and with a little bit of love, they come back year after year.

even peppers and tomatoes! They also grow herbs they use in their kitchen every day like mint, oregano, and thyme. Interlaced with all the delicious food are delightful sunflowers, dahlias, gladiolas, hardy hibiscus and more. The layers of trees, shrubs, bushes, and plants in combination is nothing short of breathtaking.

Use the space you have. Start small if you need to and pay attention to companion plants. For example, garlic and onions do well when planted under an apple tree. They each add something different to the soil and help one another be more resistant to disease. Strawberries work great under trees as well – they are natively an understory plant!

For newbies such as myself, Samantha has some practical tips to get started:

nt

It hasn’t all been sunshine and roses however, and it is nice to know even the best gardeners have some major fails every now and then. “I will try and make literally anything that could possibly grow here work,” she says. “But hardy kiwis were a total flop. I have also tried so many times to grow hazelnuts but have killed every one of them.” On top of the short growing season, there is also wildlife to contend with. Even the hardiest varieties are no match for Bambi looking for a snack.

“The most successful part of gardening is kind of like raising kids,” she says. “You teach them and help them along with the goal of getting them to thrive on their own.” Her garden does just that. And she still finds joy each spring watching her garden come to life. “It is honestly like a moon scape in the winter and then out of nowhere, the rhubarb and garlic will start popping up in the spring.”

24

Manipulate microclimates

“It is amazing how there can be so many different microclimates in one space – even within my own garden,” she says. “At one end of my garden I can’t plant squash because the temperature dips just enough in the fall that they will freeze…but they do just fine in the front area of the garden.”

It’s all about plant variety

Hardy. It’s a buzz word around here, but the high altitude and short growing season make it all but required. While most of the area lands in zone 5 of the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone rating, that usually won’t cut it. Samantha strives for zone 3 or 4 varieties to ensure her plants can thrive. When selecting rootstock for things like fruit trees, she recommends finding a variety that has a later bloom time.

“Our last freeze date is never.” Samantha’s words of wisdom may just become our new favorite bumper sticker. But it is the truth- in McCall it can snow in July (and has!). So it is good to be prepared. Know that tropical plants like tomatoes take a lot of work here, though it isn’t impossible. Keep some frost cloth (or a sheet) handy for those unexpected freezing nights and give plants a good water ahead of a freeze. “It sounds counterintuitive,” she says, “but watering before a frost can save your plants as the water generates heat during evaporation.”

Knowing your garden is important, but you can also manipulate it to make it work better for you. Create your own microclimates through “heat sinks,” created by utilizing fences, structures, or adding rocks. “Rocks and walls are amazing heat sinks,” she says. “Even with short days, they hold in the heat and help extend your growing window.” This is where trial and error really shine!

Ph

And while Samantha does have a greenhouse, she says it is not a requirement here. “You can grow a ton of food without one,” she says, “but if you are after tropical plants like peppers and tomatoes, it is really nice to have.” Continued page 26 25

One of the best ways to learn more is by asking another gardener. If you have ever done so, you know that gardeners love to talk plants! The University of Idaho Extension and the Master Gardener program are also great resources for those wanting to learn more about high altitude gardening. As Idaho’s designated agricultural college, the U of I receives funding to do all sorts of research- some of which is geared toward home gardens. As a bonus, they share research with other similar states like Oregon, Minnesota, and Maine. The Master Gardener program is a free resource for anyone – you can call or email any of the gardeners in the program and ask a question to get personalized, local feedback and information. There is also a wealth of knowledge to be found on the U of I Extension website with high-altitude specific information on plant varieties that do well (remember all that research?), season extending ideas, and so much more. It may seem a little daunting to start, but, as Samantha reminded me, plants will do better than you think. “Things are resilient and so many plants will surprise you.” And that gives me the encouragement I need to just dive in and try to carve out my own little high mountain paradise. So, cheers to sunshine and hope. Time to go plant the garden. Continued page 28

HISTORIC LODGING IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN MCCALL

www.hotelmccall.com

www.glasshousemccall.com

Charles Stegner spent the first part of his career in the IT world consulting with hospitals and healthcare companies. But he and his wife, Mary, both grew up in Idaho and knew they wanted to find a way to live in the McCall area. When Mary was offered a teaching position in Donnelly, they purchased six acres south of town and started turning a blank piece of land into Stegner Farm. “We have always had a garden and we love cooking and food,” says Charles. “It was just a natural fit.” The couple spent the first several years building infrastructure, including a geothermal greenhouse. “We knew growing in this climate would be challenging, especially on a commercial scale, so the geothermal greenhouse was a must for us.” This structure enables them to grow cold weather crops all winter, start tomatoes and peppers, and have a place for spring nursery plants. In addition to the greenhouse, Stegner Farm also uses several high tunnels to help get a jump on the season. “We are really just using every possible way to extend the growing season in a cost-effective manner,” he says. “We have tried just about everything, including melting snow with black tarps, to try and warm up the soil earlier.” And like any backyard gardener, narrowing in on the varieties that perform the best is key. “One of the hardest things about growing here is that you can’t read a seed packet and know when to plant. Every year we try to push it, plant a little earlier, and then have a backup plan in case it doesn’t work.”

Find Stegner Farm’s fresh produce at the Donnelly Farmers’ Market or Huckleberry Garden. They also sell direct from their website where you can purchase for pickup at the farm, at the Donnelly Farmers’ Market, or (new this year) at St. Luke’s McCall. They also host an annual plant sale in mid-May.

Best produce for high mountain beginners GREENS There is an endless variety of options and most have a short maturity window making them an easy, delicious option.

GARLIC Plant in the fall then forget about them. They will be the first things to pop in the spring. Garlic is hardy and easy!

POTATOES It should be no surprise that potatoes grow well in Idaho…but it may be surprising to know they grow very well in high altitudes as well.

RADISHES Like greens, radishes have a super short maturity window. They do a great job of giving you something tangible out of the garden quickly.

McCall Pathways Make It Possible By McKenzie Kraemer With all the adrenaline-inducing single-track and endless scenic hikes in the area, we can sometimes forget about how much we love our urban, multiuse trails. The paved pathways and designated bike routes, the boardwalk, and the lake loop—these are the routes we take daily. The ones that make it possible to take a bike ride as a family, enjoy an evening stroll, or walk downtown for an ice cream cone without having to worry about where to park the car. And these pathways and connections are expanding. The City of McCall Parks and Recreation Department, guided by the Pathways Master Plan, is working to make both northsouth and east-west connections throughout the city. “We finally feel like we have been able to make some big strides in completing some major connections,” says Kurt Wolf, City of McCall Parks and Recreation Director. “Our north-south pathways feel really solid. Now we are trying to infill the east-west connections to tie everything together.” That all adds up to one impressive amenity and a great way to explore the McCall area on foot or by bike. “One less vehicle downtown or at the grocery store and being able to promote a healthy activity that is fun for the whole family is amazing,” says Wolf.

Fun Fact: Parks and Rec plows all city pathways in the winter, including a route through the McCall Golf Course. “The cost to keep these pathways plowed is paid back tenfold by the health and wellness benefit the community gets,” says Wolf.

Make it An Adventure McCall’s network of pathways makes it easy to see the sights and turn a lazy stroll into an afternoon of adventure. Walk or bike these routes to visit some of McCall’s most iconic locations, take in the scenery, or check out the public art scene. Continued page 34 33

Optional Extension | 2 miles (about 15 minutes) Ride southwest toward Mather Road and turn right to stay on Mather Road. Turn right onto N Mission Street, left onto Stibnite Street, left onto the riverfront/North Valley Rail Trail pathway. Follow until you get to Mission Street. Cross over Mission Street and head down into Riverfront Park along the river.

Sheep Bridge (Riverfront Park) This big red bridge has become a local’s favorite in McCall. Explore the Riverfront Park area or cross the bridge and walk along the natural trails to soak up the day. Foot paths within the River’s Crossing neighborhood across from Riverfront Park are open to the public and offer an easy walking loop to end your iconic tour of McCall.

Route 2 Art in the City | 4 miles The natural beauty of McCall is made even more majestic with a series of public art installations throughout the city. From historical legacies like the Civilian Conservation Corps memorial statue to works by the budding future artists of McCall like the Youth Art Installation on Railroad Avenue, this collection of public art is diverse, beautiful, and speaks to the spirit of the city. Follow the Art in the City self-guided bike tour to enjoy 9 of these delightful works of art.

1. “Shortcut” (McCall Public Library) This jovial bunch of children welcomes visitors to the McCall Public Library and is the perfect first stop on our public art tour. 44

Created by artist Jane Dedecker, the staff at the library have been known to add beach balls, winter scarves, and schoolbooks to the sculpture to celebrate the seasons.

2. Youth Art Installation (Railroad Ave.) Even retaining walls in McCall are decorated to the nines! This installation was created by art students from the McCallDonnelly High School Advanced Art Class and provides a welcome pop of color for drivers, pedestrians, and bikers along Railroad Avenue.

3. “Taking Flight” (Corner of Pine and Railroad) Artist Alisa Looney created this sculpture to represent our deep connection with nature, open skies, and free-flowing rivers. The bright blue steel installation joins a bird taking flight with a person staying grounded, all in a location that takes advantage of beautiful Payette Lake in the background!

4. Big Green Chair (NE corner of Pine St. and Roosevelt Ave.) This hidden gem is a perfect place to snap a family photo. Find it tucked away under the pines in a little popup park on the corner of Pine and Roosevelt. There are also several picnic tables here where you can stop and enjoy a snack.

5. “Mountain Goats at Play” (Roosevelt Ave.) Pull up a seat next to three colorful mountain goats in the Alpine Playhouse pedestrian plaza. Artist Matt Babcock’s bright red aluminum installation provides a fun public gathering place to soak in the sunshine. While you are there, check the Alpine Playhouse for the next performance dates! 6. “Going to School” (Brown Park) Brown Park is an idyllic place to spend an hour or two. Along with playground equipment, benches, and ample green space to enjoy, this site is also where the historic McCall Mill used to be located and has a lovely shoreline path perfect for strolling.

7. “Stalactites” (Legacy Park) Legacy Park is in the center of it all and features a unique sculpture designed by Zella Bardsley that perfectly frames the view of Payette Lake and Brundage Mountain. While here, enjoy a volleyball court, picnic tables, splash fountain, and an enclosed swimming area.

8. “CCC Worker Memorial” (Central Idaho Historical Museum) During the Great Depression, more than 25 percent of Americans were suffering from unemployment. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was part of FDR’s New Deal and put America’s young men to work protecting the nation’s natural resources. The CCC accomplished remarkable feats for the environment and agriculture and had a lasting impact on the McCall area. The CCC Worker statue is a monument to their legacy and sits on the lawn of the Central Idaho Historical Museum.

9. “Wings Over McCall” (Deinhard and Hwy 55) The last stop on our tour, but the first piece of art to welcome you into McCall! “Wings Over McCall” sits at the main intersection of Dienhard and Highway 55, against the backdrop of the McCall airport. This iconic sundial was designed by Ward Hooper. 46

Route 3 The Scenic Route | 6.3 miles (up to 17.3 with extensions) McCall’s network of pathways gives you a front row seat to some seriously beautiful views. From the golf course to Ponderosa State Park, Payette Lake to shady forests, and more beauty beyond every turn, there is no shortage of natural beauty to see on a ride around town.

1. Start It is easy to hop on the trail at any point and make a loop of this route, but for an easy starting point, we like to start this ride on the separated paved pathway in front of Ridley’s Family Market. The path is smooth, wide and a perfect place to kick off your scenic ride. Continued page 48

2. Put a Spring in your Step (or Pedal)

Pro Tip: There is a bike tuning station where the path passes Wooley Ave. in case you need to make any adjustments along the way! This is also a great time to explore the new Wooley Boardwalk!

3. Lick Creek Road Turn west and head toward Ponderosa State Park. This section of the route is a road shared with vehicles, pedestrians, and bikes. At the end of Lick Creek Road, turn north and ride into Ponderosa State Park.

4. Ponderosa State Park Take the Lakeview Trail at the park entrance to access the Peninsula Trail that follows the western shoreline of the park. At this point, you can choose to explore the Visitors Center, Amphitheater, Activity Center, and beaches or extend your ride through the park to see one of the most scenic overlooks in McCall. 48

From Ridley’s, head east toward the Payette Lakes Middle School then turn north to connect to the Spring Mountain Ranch paved pathway. This delightful stretch takes you along the outskirts of the city and past thick forested areas, the McCall Golf Course, and past meadows and wetlands.

Optional Extension: Osprey Point & Narrows Overlook

The trails in the park are dirt single track and the route to the overlook does climb in elevation, but the effort is worth the view! From the Peninsula Trail starting at the Activity Center, ride 3/4 of a mile and connect to the Huckleberry Bay Mountain Bike Trail at the Lily Marsh parking lot. This route will take you another mile to the northernmost point of the park with two stunning overlooks.

5. Lakeside Cruise When you are ready to head back into town, exit Ponderosa State Park and turn right onto Ruby Street. This turns into McCall Avenue and follows the perimeter of Payette Lake. Continue on to Mill Road, and then turn right onto Pine to put you right at Legacy Park.

6. Explore Downtown McCall From Legacy Park, pedal through the downtown core and explore the shops and restaurants. If you are looping back to the starting point, meet up with the pathway system next to City Hall on E. Park Street. Ride past the McCall-Donnelly High School and Disc Golf Course until you reach the pathway’s intersection at Deinhard. From here, turn east (left) to get back to Ridley’s.

WHERE BEER LOVERS MIGRATE!

Optional Extension: North Valley Rail Trail If you haven’t had enough scenery for one day, extend your ride by continuing straight along the pathway at the Deinhard intersection. The route will take you to Mission Street with a short section of “share the road” riding until a separated paved pathway near the River Ranch community begins. The paved pathway gives way to a natural surface pathway and marks the beginning of the North Valley Rail Trail. Ride the Rail Trail past the Activity Barn up to Heinrich Lane.

Award-Winning Hand-Crafted Beer Daily Happy Hour

More Links in the Chain To compliment the pathways already in place, the City of McCall Parks and Recreation Department has several projects in the works to strengthen the interconnectivity of existing trails and add features to make pathway use more enjoyable. Flight Path Bike Park The City of McCall is partnering with the Central Idaho Mountain Biking Association (CIMBA) to develop a flow line and several jump lines adjacent to the existing pathway between Stibnite and Deinhard. “This is a fun one we are planning to start this summer and is a great compliment to the skate park and pump track that are connected to this route,” says Wolf.

Wooley Phase 2 Will add a paved pathway along Wooley Ave. to connect the end of the Wooley Boardwalk and Davis Ave. Deinhard Improvements A short section of paved pathway is planned for Deinhard starting at the intersection of Deinhard and Highway 55 to the Post Office. In addition, a planned development near the McCall Fire Station will include adding a separated pathway along Deinhard starting at Thula Street and connecting with the existing riverfront route that parallels Mission Street. Lardo Bridge Connection Engineering is currently underway to build a pathway that connects the Lardo Bridge near Shore Lodge to the Bear Basin connector trail. Single-track at Spring Mountain Ranch The Parks department is eyeing a possible single-track line that parallels the Spring Mountain Ranch paved pathway that would utilize log and rock features in the natural landscape.

For the Love of Dogs MCPAWS Volunteers are on the Giving AND Receiving End of Unconditional Love By April Thomas Whitney

Dogs. They bring so much joy to our lives. But not every dog has a loving family to call their own. The McCall community is fortunate to have a pro-active, no-kill shelter with paid staff dedicated to finding homes for stray and surrendered pets. Last year alone, the MCPAWS Regional Animal Shelter found adoptive families for an impressive 462 pets. A successful adoption program is not just about posting cute pictures of the animals. Shelter staff is dedicated to working with each animal – no matter their quirks or background – to give them the best chance of finding a forever home. It’s a big responsibility, and shelter managers will tell you a lot of the credit for that success goes to a small but dedicated group of volunteers. Having volunteers come in and walk the dogs, or even help with dog laundry, makes a big difference, according to assistant shelter manager, Ashley Malone. “Not only does it give us time to work with another dog, it gives that dog that they’re walking an opportunity to meet a new person, or go for a walk and have that sort of enrichment.” Socializing is key to keeping the dogs calm and also help the shelter staff judge the best type of adoptive family for each dog. “Sometimes we have volunteers who have younger kids and sometimes they’re walking some dogs then we know those dogs are great with kids and we get that question a lot,” adds Malone. Those who volunteer to foster shelter dogs take that socialization to the next level. Fosters help the shelter staff determine how a dog will behave and react in a home 52

Chris Sinclair, MCPAWS Volunteer

environment—if they’re good with other dogs or cats, how they react to wildlife, and how they react to children—all important factors in matching them to future families. “When a foster dog comes back in for an adoption appointment, their demeanor is going to be a lot different than if they’d been sitting here in the shelter,” says Malone. “They’ll be more open to meeting new people, they’ll want to take treats, they’ll want pets, they’ll want to play. If they had just been here in the shelter, they’re more likely to be fearful, more shy.”

Boutique spa where couples and individuals can be themselves to focus on self-care, connection and well-being

It’s not just the dogs who benefit from these special relationships. Chris Sinclair got interested in volunteering at MCPAWS after he had a stroke about five years ago. He found spending time with the shelter dogs helped him feel a sense of connection and companionship as he worked to recover.

“I couldn’t speak at all when I had my stroke, so sometimes I’d read to the dogs, and then I started walking the dogs,” says Sinclair, and as we all know, “dogs don’t judge.” “It was good for my speech therapy,” says Sinclair, and he found he liked it so much that walking two or three dogs at the shelter is now part of his daily routine. Sinclair has two dogs at home that also get walked every day. “Shelter dogs are good dogs,” Sinclair says. He especially likes walking the dogs who’ve been at the shelter for a while. That was obvious when foster pup Cinder came to visit and headed straight for Chris to share some love. Chris talks to the dogs during their walks and tries to help them learn to sit and be calm and to reinforce the shelter workers’ efforts to teach good behaviors and unlearn the undesirable ones. For lifelong dog owner Bobbie Meader, bringing Cinder into her home helped fill a void in her life. A few years into retirement, she found herself dog-free and looking for something meaningful to do with her time. The foster program allows her to enjoy the companionship of a dog without giving up the freedom to travel to see her grandchildren. “I wanted to see if I could give these puppies a little bit of love and try to help find them a home,” says Meader.

Bobby Meader, MCPAWS Volunteer

Two-year-old Cinder had been at the shelter for several months before Bobbie took her home as a foster. “I was really a little apprehensive because I didn’t know what I was getting into, and I knew how scared she was,” says Meader. “But on a daily basis, we would just make small steps every single day and her progress has just amazed me.” In just six weeks, Cinder went from being shy and skittish to a less fearful, more communicative dog that has adjusted to a household routine. “Until you’re able to actually have them in your home, you really don’t know their personality,” says Meader. We met Bobbie the day before Cinder’s adoption appointment. She says it will be hard to say goodbye, but her whole goal was to give Cinder love and consistency to help her get adopted. “I’m really, really excited for her,” says Meader. “All I care about is they love her, give her all the attention they can, and have a lot of patience with her.” Bobbie says her time with Cinder helped her find her purpose for this stage of life, and she’ll ABSOLUTELY foster again. The MCPAWS team wants dog lovers to know that fosters don’t need to be available for weeks on end. There is a real need for people who can foster for a day, a few days, or even just overnight. The shelter takes care of all food, bedding, and medical expenses for the foster pets and fosters and dog walkers both get training on kennel skills and how to interact with shelter dogs before they start their one-on-one duties. If you want to help but fostering or dog walking isn’t the right fit for you, there are plenty of other ways to support the MCPAW’s efforts. Head to www.mcpaws.org and look for the “Get Involved” tab.

SAVOR Golf and cocktails? Check. Axe throwing and appetizers? Double check. While we can all appreciate a fancy sit-down dinner, sometimes you need to get up and move…and Foresters in McCall and Palooza Basecamp & Eatery in Cascade offer two fun ways to do just that. Both are in historic buildings, and both are providing some unexpected recreation. Both were also gracious enough to share a few of their favorite summer-inspired recipes with us.

FORESTERS CHERRY LIMEADE Foresters originally opened in downtown McCall in 1947 and has been serving up good drinks with good friends for 75 years. While the building may be historic, that hasn’t stopped Foresters from adding some modern amenities, including a Trackman Golf Simulator. Rent by the hour or join one of the seasonal golf leagues and play more than 125 courses (including Pebble Beach and St. Andrew’s)- all from the comfort of your neighborhood bar! Challenge friends to games like closest to the pin or capture the flag. You can even book a private or group lesson to improve your swing. Oh, and the bartender is close by to keep your cocktail fresh. forestersmccall.com 60

FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED SINCE 1989 Forged from over 33 years of tradition, “My Father’s Place” is a family owned and operated restaurant that blends just the right amount of vintage charm, contemporary style and unforgettable tastes to create a dining experience that transcends generations. The menu at “My Father’s Place” boasts some of the best charbroiled burgers, fries and shakes in the great state of Idaho.

PALOOZA BASECAMP’S KALE SALAD The historic Chief Hotel in Cascade has a brand-new look. With a hotel upstairs and a restaurant and bar downstairs, this piece of downtown history is the new hot spot. Flavorful food with a fresh twist on some Idaho favorites and unexpected dishes make Palooza Basecamp a perfect spot for locals and visitors alike. They even grow their own microgreens and cut them to order, bringing a flare to our Idaho mountains that is much needed. Where else can you get Ahi Poke Nachos AND a classic burger all in one place? Oh, and did we mention that they have axe throwing? So while you let your Pulled Pork Sandwich settle or sip on a glass of wine, try your hand at this key wilderness skill. A coach will give you a quick lesson then set you free to let the axes fly. Just remember to bring close-toed shoes! paloozabrands.com

INGREDIENTS: 2 cups Kale ¾ oz toasted pepitas ½ Granny Smith apple

¾ oz shredded Parmesan cheese 1.5 oz Lemon Vinaigrette

DIRECTIONS: F inely Chop Kale, then massage with Lemon Vinaigrette. Squeeze tightly, this helps to break down fibers in the kale, lessening some of the traditional tough characteristics of kale. Add toasted pepitas and parmesan cheese. Toss together and plate.

Fresh food, not fast food. Quality made to order! 901 N 3rd Street, McCall 208.634.4401

Add apple slices to garnish. TIP: add pan seared salmon, grilled chicken or a falafel patty to make it a meal!

Play Me Some

Mountain Music

By April Thomas Whitney

This summer, the stars appear to be aligning for a lively music season, with favorite local festivals and concert series’ making a strong comeback for Summer 2022!

West Mountain Takeover

68

Although we have all missed live shows, the artists who perform at them are even more eager to get back in the act. West Mountain Takeover, a local band that played at several outdoor concerts last summer, is particularly eager to get back to performances. This three-piece, bluesy, grassy, rockin’ band—with country flair—performs an equal mix of covers and original songs, and has quickly become a top local draw, no matter where they take the stage. Mark Stoeckl (banjo, singer, songwriter), Sean Gould (bass guitar, occasional vocals) and Jon Umbdenstock (electric guitar) say the band came together organically during open jam sessions at Broken Horn Brewery, and that the makeup of West Mountain Takeover evolved to fit the quirks of local spaces and music venues. They sat down with Visit McCall to share their impressions of what makes some of the area’s concert venues special—for the bands—and the audience.

toward the west and frequently lights up the sky with a colorful sunset during the show. The members of West Mountain Takeover agree that one of the coolest things about this venue is the location right in the heart of McCall. Sometimes, people who weren’t even planning to go to the show will be downtown, hear the music, and wander over to see what’s going on. Ph

They may stay for a few songs or for the rest of the show, it’s very inviting and accessible. According to Jon Umbdenstock (the chicken picken’ electric guitar player), when it comes to live shows, “The audience is a crucial, integral member of the band.”

Brundage Mountain Resort Free TGIF Concert Series Fridays from early July through Labor Day Weekend Friday concerts at the Brundage Mountain amphitheater are free and feature regional acts, including a popular annual show with hometown favorite, Jeff Crosby. There’s plenty of space to spread out a blanket or low chair, and Brundage sets up “dog free” and “dog friendly” zones so those with well-behaved dogs (on a leash) can bring their furry friends to the shows. No outside food or beverage is allowed at Brundage, but several outlets are open during concerts to purchase snacks, food, soft drinks, beer, wine, and cocktails. brundage.com/events The Venue Vibe from WMT: Playing at Brundage is great because it’s such a beautiful, iconic location; the crowds are larger and it’s got good natural outdoor acoustics. There’s plenty of convenient parking which helps facilitate the crowds, and bigger crowds tend to bring great energy. “Dancing is the highest form of flattery for a band,” according to Umbdenstock, and at Brundage, concertgoers of all ages love to kick off their shoes and dance on the grass.

Music Festivals Fourth of July Music Fest at Brundage Mountain July 4 In addition to the weekly Friday music series, Brundage Mountain hosts a free, one-day music festival each Fourth of July. This festival offers a full day of family fun, starting with the popular Cat Track 10k and 5k Fun Runs, chairlift rides, lawn games, and a three-band lineup that plays from 11:30 am-5:00 pm. brundage.com/events

SummerFest July 10 – 16 This festival has a different vibe than a lot of the others in this collection. This summer is the 10th Anniversary SummerFest, which features week-long classical and pops performances at Mountain Life Church. The 55-piece SummerFest Orchestra, along with longtime artistic director & conductor, Eric Garcia, will perform five live musical concerts featuring a variety of talented guest musicians. A free family concert will be performed Saturday morning with special guest (teacher-astronaut) Barbara Morgan as narrator, July 16 at 11:30 am. mccallmusicsociety.org Continued page 74 72

The Summer Music Festival at Roseberry July 14, 15, 16 For a truly unique musical experience, you’ll want to purchase tickets to this iconic three-day festival which welcomes old-timers, locals, and newcomers to enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere that bursts with good vibes. The McCall Folklore Society does an impressive job of scouting talented acts. This year’s Saturday night headliner is seven-piece Con Brio, which will bring an energetic brand of soul, psych-rock, and R&B to this one-of-a-kind venue. thesummermusicfestival.com The Venue Vibe from WMT: Members of West Mountain Takeover admit they got a little starstruck when they were invited to open for headliner Yonder Mountain String Band last summer. “One of the coolest things for me was when I showed up there, I walked in the back of the barn to check in, and as I’m walking through those doors, I start to hear a fiddle playing, and there’s a mandolin player, and they’re fiddling around and warming up in the back of the barn,” says lead singer, Mark Stoeckl. “The barn itself has amazing acoustics, and the vibe of being backstage in that setting was pretty cool and very nostalgic.” They were also blown away by the quality of sound, as well as the view from the stage, which includes part of Jughandle Mountain and “the Pins.” “It’s easy to space out on the view,” says Sean Gould. “And to have professional, experienced sound techs is really fun.”

No matter where you enjoy live music this summer, WMT offers these final words of advice, “Don’t drink and drive. And… tip the band.”

One-Offs & Pop-Ups McCall’s live music vibes are strong. So strong, in fact, that you’ll find music events popping up at a mix of venues like the new Glass House, the classic Bistro 45 Wine Bar courtyard, outside the Mountain Java coffeehouse, and even at world-famous Ice Cream Alley. Broken Horn Brewing hosts freeform jam sessions on Monday evenings while Salmon River Brewery typically hosts live music at the Taphouse on Thursdays. Musicians need to sign up in advance, but music lovers can just show up and enjoy some Bluegrass/ Americana jams along with tasty craft brews.

Foresters Club: Freshly remodeled and reimagined, Foresters’ new set up is getting rave reviews from the WMT crew. “A small crowd can feel big and lively in a compact space,” says Gould, who enjoys the eclectic crowds that show up in the heart of downtown McCall. “I like to think they were seduced off the street by the sultry sounds of the bass guitar,” adds Gould. forestersmccall. com/happenings

Café 6-Three-4: Another favorite of the WMT trio was a small indoor show at Café 6-three-4, which the band says had “a cool speak-easy vibe”. The intimate venue pulled in a crowd that really responded to their musical style. “If you get teenage dudes to dance you know you’re doing something right,” says Umbdenstock. cafe6three4mccall.com 76

In the heat of summer, we can’t help but dream of champagne snow, creamy corduroy, and fresh powder stashes. When the snow starts to fall, McCall transforms into a winter wonderland…see what’s in store:

ALPINE SKI

WINTER EVENTS The entertainment heats up in the winter! Start with the Festival of Trees Thanksgiving weekend then cruise right into the holiday season with “Mountain Hollydays.” This two month extravaganza offers everything from wine tastings to shop local deals. In January, celebrate all things winter with the 10-day Winter Carnival and the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge followed by one of our favorite events in February, Destination:Beer.

NORDIC, FAT BIKE & SNOWSHOE When the sun shines in the winter, powder can play second fiddle to a fresh groomer…a staple for Nordic skiers and something McCall has plenty of. The rolling meadows and challenging hills winding through the trees offers unparalleled options. Looking for a new way to explore the winter trails? Hop on a fat tire bike and cruise through the packed snow. Want to trek into a winter wonderland? Snowshoes are a great way to blaze your own trail!

With three alpine ski areas, McCall is home to some of the finest Alpine skiing and snowboarding in the Northwest. Untracked powder, smooth corduroy, and plenty of terrain park features to keep you shredding. Want to explore beyond the boundaries? Access more than 20,000 acres of snow with a cat ski trip with Brundage SnowCat Adventures or Payette Powder Guides.

SNOWMOBILE With more than 500 miles of groomed trails, we promise you won’t be bored! Strike out on your own with your personal machines or rent them from one of our local businesses. You can also follow an experienced guide who can show riders of all abilities everything from gentle slopes to challenging hillsides that tempt even the most adventurous of the “highmarkers.” Want to try something new? Snow biking is gaining traction in McCall and a great way to experience familiar terrain in a whole new way.

If cabin fever threatens, get the entire family out to play! Strap on the ice skates and hit up open skate at the Manchester Ice Center or ride up the magic carpet at the Activity Barn to fly down the hill on a snow tube. For a quick sledding adventure, try Legacy Park in downtown McCall. The gentle slope is perfect for the little ones! The area is also home to several hot springs perfect for warming up on a cold day.

PARTING SHOT What the Yak is That? It isn’t uncommon to do a double-take as you drive down Farm to Market Road. Cows? Pretty typical. Goats and horses? Nothing new. But yaks? That is something you don’t see every day (well, unless you live here!). And it turns out, they are pretty amazing animals. Yaks originally hail from the Himalayas making them ideal for the high elevation and cold winter climate here. They are sturdy and have long shaggy hair with a dense wool undercoat that can make it look like they’re wearing a skirt of wool. Yaks are relatively low maintenance and have less of an impact on pastureland – and when combined with rotational grazing the yaks are happy and so is the pasture. They are also pretty fun to be around. All of that adds up to happy yaks and delicious gourmet grass-fed meat.

These yaks are calved, raised, and butchered locally by Lake Fork Farm (formerly Hobbit Hill Farm). The farm’s mission is to provide exceptional food to the community with a focus on land stewardship and conservation. Owned and operated by the husband-and-wife duo, Isaac and Bjornen, everything they sell is grown and raised on their farm right here in McCall. Yak meat is flavorful and has more protein than beef. It is lean, juicy, and it has a mild flavor. Yak meat is a heart-healthy and nutrient rich meat coming in at 95 percent fat free, its high in “good” fats and low in “bad” fats. The meat tastes like bison but it’s a deeper red color due to the oxygenation of their blood cells, an adaptation to their high-altitude environments. Find yak meat on the menu at Rupert’s at Hotel McCall, the Clubhouse Restaurant at Jug Mountain Ranch, and Ragazza di Bufalo. You can also purchase meat at Huckleberry Garden in McCall or at the McCall Farmers’ Market.
