WELCOME TO McCALL
This issue of Visit McCall Magazine is dedicated to Nicole Musgrove, an integral part of the McCall Area Chamber and our entire community. Nicole led the Chamber for several years. She elevated our organization to the next level, helping launch countless new initiatives before embarking on her last venture as the Ponderosa Center Director of Development. She was a bright light for all and someone who always said “yes” to any opportunity that bettered our community. From fundraising efforts for area non-profits, to coordinating high school events for the booster club, she always found the time and energy. Nicole was brilliant in the kitchen, serving up her signature Cajun dishes with authentic southern flair, and with a smile that could light up a room.
Nicole’s light is something we want to work every day to bring to others. A smile at a stranger, a thank you, patience in a long line, empathy and understanding for a neighbor, contributing, volunteering, helping, kindness, and caring. These will be our tribute to her memory.
Want to do more? Visit our website to learn more about our “Keep McCall Kind” initiative and the Nicole Musgrove Leadership Academy Scholarship.

By April Thomas WhitneyThe greater McCall area boasts an impressive 500 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, which provide access to some of the most beautiful backcountry in the world.
For some, the trails and the views are the reward. For others, groomed trails are merely an avenue to arrive at the real prize: off-trail powder in terrain that varies from meadows and frozen lakes to high-country bowls and gnarly alpine lines.
No matter which avenue one takes, being prepared is crucial. Beyond the gear and training needed to hit the trails, there’s one more ingredient to an epic snowmobile adventure: your crew.

Jill Morris Chapman and Tammy McCloud spend nearly every weekend and holiday on their sleds, (not to mention a solid amount of mid-week powder chasing). The pair rides with different groups of people, but when the snow falls deep and soft, they prefer to set out with a small, core group of sledders who share their same goals; feed their hunger for powder, get the adrenaline flowing, but don’t take any stupid chances in the backcountry.
“When we get to the parking lot, we do a beacon check and we talk about the avalanche conditions,” says McCloud. “And what’s everybody’s comfort level?”
These sled sisters come prepared to ride hard: avalanche safety beacon, shovel and probe, plus chest protectors and shin guards. They pack enough food, water, and supplies to spend the night in
the backcountry, even though they’ve never gotten stuck past dark – yet.
Even with all the right preparations, when you’re razor-focused on chasing down the freshest, fluffiest lines, it can be easy to let the pursuit of powder get in the way of good decision making.
That’s why communication and trust among fellow riders is so crucial.

“Sometimes your day may start out well and then you just get into a spot that doesn’t feel right,” says McCloud. “You know on paper it doesn’t look like it should be a bad spot, but all of a sudden the hair on the back of your neck stands up and we’re like, we need to NOT be here.”
“So we talk about it,” says Chapman.
Maybe the visibility is bad, or the snow and slope conditions feel sketchy. Or maybe one of their friends has simply lost their mojo.
“And we’ll call our friends out on it,” adds McCloud. “And if someone is not feeling good, then somebody always says, ‘I’ll hang back or I’ll take you back.’”
It took time to develop that level of confidence in their decision-making. Chapman says when she was first starting out in the sport more than a decade ago, she would just follow along with what the group was doing, even if her intuition was telling her not to.
“But now, I know what I can do, and I know what I can’t do, and I have total confidence to say, ‘No, I’m out.’”
Where did they get that confidence? Surprisingly, it wasn’t from the guys who first introduced them to the sport.
Back then, Jill was just dating her now-husband, who asked, “How would you like to go to Halfway, Oregon for the weekend with 50 women?”
Her reaction? “That sounds like my idea of hell,” says Chapman.
McCloud was also wary of her first women’s trip, and at that point, she was GREEN. Before leaving on the trip, she needed to learn to start her own snowmobile and get the cap off to check her oil. She had never loaded her own sled into the trailer. She was reluctant, but she put herself out there and:
“It was FABULOUS.”
“You gain the confidence of driving to the event knowing you can load and pull a trailer, unload by yourself, but with the support of all these wonderful women, and then learning how to check the oil, how to change a belt, how to change

Pictured above: THE SHORE CIDERa spark plug,” added Chapman. “We help each other do that and really support each other as women and becoming women riders and you establish this confidence that carries into your entire life.”
They also learned about the importance of having the right gear, how their comfort could improve with outerwear that fit their shape, and how their riding could improve on a sled set up specifically for their size and weight.
Most importantly, the other women riders helped them learn how to RIDE like women. Women have lower centers of gravity with strength concentrated in their legs and core. Different techniques can help them use the dynamics of the female body more effectively.
“I will push the weight through from my shoulder, through my hip, down through my foot.” Chapman explains. “And then turn the skis and use the motor and use the track to help turn the sled. Because if I try to muscle it all day long, I’m going to be exhausted by noon.”
McCloud felt comfortable pushing herself in the supportive environment of her first women’s ride. She learned new things on the snow, and she loaded her own sled into the trailer.
“These women were just so helpful and nobody was judgy and there was no drama and I felt incredibly empowered and confident to keep doing this sport,” saIdaho McCloud.
“We have male friends that will come up and it’s fabulous to ride with them because they take all the work out of it,” says Chapman. “They’ll just grab the rear bumper and lift it out of the hole and so off you go.”
But for women, a more deliberate, mindful approach can be more effective. Chapman and McCloud have reached expert status at a skill they call ‘marmoting’. The rider sits in the snow in front of the sled, scoots under the front end and clears out, then packs down the snow with their feet and legs.
Then, they use multiple people—and their favorite accessory—to get the sled loose.
Including rescuing fellow riders they might find stuck in the snow.
“We pull out our pink straps and get to work and they’re like, ‘we don’t get it,’” says McCloud. “And we say, ‘No, no, just let us show you. Let us do what we can do.’”
Chapman says helping others is part of their tribe’s code, and it extends to all experienced sledders they come across. They can’t imagine not offering help when strangers need it, and they ride into the backcountry knowing other sledders would do the same.
Continued page 14
“Yeah, we absolutely use the pink straps for everything,” says Chapman.
“And when we rescue a guy, which we do all the time,” adds Chapman, smiling and nodding. “We make sure to give them a pink strap.”

Trip Guide #1 Skiing & Snowboarding
What was once a well-kept secret among powder-chasing purists, the skiing in the McCall area is most certainly getting noticed. Long before Brundage Mountain opened sixty years ago, skiing on the hills around McCall was part of the local mountain culture. Now, powder hounds have two major ski resorts to choose from, offering a tantalizing variety of terrain, scenery, and amenities.
Skiers and snowboarders will want to dedicate an entire day (if not more) to exploring either Brundage Mountain or Tamarack Resort and a ski vacation here can easily offer up a whole week’s worth of exploring.

BRUNDAGE MOUNTAIN RESORT
www.brundage.com
Known for the Best Snow in Idaho, and recently recognized as the top resort in the U.S. in USA Today’s People’s Choice Awards, the charms of Brundage Mountain reach far beyond the meticulously groomed trails.
Powder hounds will love the easy access powder runs on the edges of the groomed Frontside trails. Look skiers-left of North and Main Street for first chair powder laps, or head over to Meadow Bowl for some of the best low-angle powder stashes anywhere. The Lakeview Zone, on the mountain’s south side, rides bigger than its four named runs would suggest.
Pro Tip: It’s unusual to find all Lakeview runs groomed on powder mornings, meaning there’s always a good chance you’ll get some great turns on what locals affectionately refer to as ‘powderoy’ (fresh powder on top of runs groomed the night before).
By the Numbers:
Lift-Accessible Terrain: 1,920 acres
Vertical Drop: 1,921’
Summit: 7,803’
Base: 5,882’
Average Snowfall: 320”
More advanced riders will appreciate the chance to explore the powder-packed lift-served backcountry adjacent to the ski area (make sure you are avalanche safety-savvy and equipped with shovel, beacon, and probe before heading out). For those seeking the ultimate alpine experience on the Best Snow in Idaho, 18,000 acres of snowcat terrain sits just north of Brundage and is accessible by reservation via a guided Snowcat Adventure.
Continued page 24
For beginners and families, the Beartopia Fun Zone provides a perfect progression, with runs that level-up gently from conveyorserved Tater Tot to the Easy Street Triple Chair’s namesake run. From there, families with multiple skill levels in play can cruise over to the Bear Chair Triple. This area has a nice variety of green mid-mountain groomers, a couple of small terrain parks, and lots of playful tree runs the kids will love. More experienced family members can take quick detours to a handful of blue and black runs. For lunch, hit the easy button and pop into the Bear’s Den Expanded deck seating gives grownups the option to relax with an adult beverage while the rest of the crew works off that youthful energy lapping the Bear Chair.

www.tamarackidaho.com
If you like the convenience of lift-served skiing but long to leave the crowds behind, Tamarack is the place for you. Weekdays are especially chill, but lift lines rarely grow long even on weekends.
What is long at Tamarack are the runs. With 2,800 feet of total vertical drop, the trails served by the combination of the Tamarack Express and the Summit Express can keep groomer riders satisfied for hours. Bliss offers up stunning views at the top and playful pitch variations that can make you feel like you’re in an Olympic Downhill race. Less seasoned skiers and riders will enjoy Lower Serenity, a favorite spot to build skills or work out the kinks.
Whether you’re lapping the blacks and blues off the summit on a powder day, hitting the terrain features on Lower Showtime, or building confidence on Waltz, the mid-mountain Mile High Cantina is a perfect stop for a grab and go meal or refreshing beverage.
The Wildwood Zone, served by a high-speed quad, is out of the main traffic flow but worth the detour for intermediate and advanced skiers.
By the Numbers:
Pro Tip: Be sure to check out the Tamarack grove for a fresh twist on tree skiing. The Tamaracks drop their amber needles each fall, causing these trees to develop less intense tree wells than evergreens and creating a unique off-piste experience that powder fans won’t want to miss.
Lift-Accessible Terrain: 1,100 acres
Vertical Drop: 2,800’
Summit: 7,700’
Base: 4,900’
Average Snowfall: 300”
When the hunger pangs hit, head back to the base area and check out the impressive new offerings along the Plaza Walkway. The Rendezvous Food Hall is an open, indoor venue featuring an eclectic mix of four eateries. The Triple B Diner has a 50’s vibe and offers a classic rib-sticking diner
Photo courtesy Tamarack Resortbreakfast and burgers and fries at lunch. El Pueblo Taqueria features tasty burritos and street tacos to enjoy inside or to take away. Summit Bowls serves up rice and noodle options with meat, veggies, and tasty sauces. Crusty’s Pizza, a longtime staple of the Downtown McCall food scene, expanded to this second location. The food hall is also home to the new Bumps & Brews Beer Bar, which features an indulgent selection of craft beers on tap and will host live music and a lively ‘apres’ scene throughout the winter.

Trip Guide #2
Self-Guided Outings
No Lift Ticket Required
You don’t need to be a gravity hound to get active outdoors in McCall. The area has plenty to offer those who prefer to recreate on less precipitous surfaces. Before you head out for a day of Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, or fat biking, you’ll want to make sure your human fuel tank is sufficiently full.
FoggLifter Café is a favorite fixture downtown. It opens at 7 am, and offers delicious food, friendly service, and a cozy space to start your day. Another great option is Café 6 Three 4, where you’ll find great coffee and unique eats in a charming and eclectic atmosphere.
If you want your breakfast to stick to your ribs, grab a bite at the Old Town Market. This under-the-radar spot is located inside the Shell Station, but it offers much more than your typical convenience store breakfast.
Pro Tip: Don’t shy away from the Moose Toast or what many consider to be the best biscuits & gravy in town.
NORDIC, ‘CROSS-COUNTRY’, or SKATE SKIING
Nordic Skiing, aka cross-country skiing, has been around even longer than the downhill variety, and McCall is a mecca for those interested in the traditional form of the sport or the increasingly popular style, skate skiing! There’s no shortage of groomed trails to choose from in and around the McCall area.
Ponderosa State Park is located on a 1,000-acre peninsula that splits Payette Lake just two miles north of downtown McCall. Ponderosa maintains more than 13 miles (21 km) of groomed forest trails that include level stretches, rolling hills,
Photo courtesy Case Conti Visualsand ridge top pitches offering spectacular views of Payette Lake. Ponderosa has a single, one-mile trail, Rover’s Roundabout, that is dogfriendly, but those who prefer to recreate with Fido may want to head over to one of the next four locations:
Bear Basin Nordic Center, just north of McCall, provides access to about 19 miles (30 km) of groomed cross-country trails. ALL trails at Bear Basin are now dog-friendly. Bear Basin sits up at 5,280 feet elevation, which makes it a prime spot for early and late-season outings due to the deeper snowpack. Beautiful scenery abounds at Bear Basin—on a clear day, you can’t beat the vistas from Lyle’s Loop.
Jug Mountain Ranch, just 10.5 easy road miles from McCall, maintains 16 miles (25 km) of groomed trails that offer splendid views of Long Valley and the iconic Jughandle Mountain. Trails are free and open to the public, and provide a mixture of flat, open stretches and short, gentle hills that cater to all levels of Nordic skiers. Dogs are welcome on all Jug Mountain Trails. Another dog-friendly spot closer to McCall pieces together the North
Continued page 32
Valley Rail Trail with the Activity Barn. Together, these free, dog-friendly trails offer more than 5 miles (8 km) of easy-access trail close to town.
The 15-mile (24 km) Nordic trail system at Tamarack Resort, 8 miles outside Donnelly, offers a variety of trails that wind through open meadows and forested paths lined by towering pines, fir, larch and aspen. These free trails are dog-friendly, but leashes are recommended.
SNOWSHOEING
Perhaps the most accessible winter sport on this list, snowshoeing is exploding in popularity. Why? Anyone who can walk can strap on snowshoes and simply widen their gait to be a few steps away from mastery!
Snowshoeing is allowed in all the Nordic areas listed above, but there are a few things to keep in mind when exploring the Nordic areas. First of all, while skate skiers and classic Nordic skiers keep to their groomed tracks, shoeshoes are great for off-roading, especially after one of the frequent powder dumps hits the area.
Pro tip: We highly recommend poles for anyone heading into the softer snow. Second, please be aware that snowshoes can muck up the groomed surfaces, especially the tightly-set classic tracks, so if you see two lines of track be sure to steer clear or proceed off the side of the groomed surface.
FAT BIKING
Gone are the days of stowing bikes away during the winter. Fat bikes have been gaining traction over the last few years in McCall for their ability to grip surfaces a traditional mountain bike would not be able to traverse.
Groomed trails at areas like Jug Mountain Ranch and the Activity Barn/North Rail Trail are a great place for fat bikers to start. In fact, Jug Mountain Ranch was the first resort in Valley County to open up all of its trails to fat biking and they now boast a network of fat bike-specific trails. Tamarack is adding new trails this winter specifically tailored to fat bikers, so even seasoned visitors can have a fresh experience on two wheels.
Pro Tip: Tire pressure can make a huge difference when you are fat biking. Hard-packed trails ride well at a PSI of 6-8, while softer trails might ride better at a PSI of 5 and below. It’s easier to let air out then put it in, so we recommend starting high and letting air out as conditions warrant.
Please note: Fat bikes are not allowed on Nordic trails at Bear Basin or Ponderosa State Park.
GEARING UP
Several shops around the area rent snowshoes, classic and skate skis, and fat bikes on a half-day, full-day, and multi-day basis. Pro Tip: some of the rental fleets listed are smaller than others, so if you have a large group, you’ll definitely want to call ahead.

Trip Guide #3
Plan a “Yes Day”
With thisfamily-friendly itinerary
Families come in all shapes and sizes and it can be tricky to find activities that strike the right balance when it comes to energy, attention span, and athletic skill. Parents want to make great vacation memories for the kids, but, let’s be honest, we’d also like to relax a little! Here’s a quick rundown of some fun experiences kids of all ages will enjoy:
SNOWTUBING AT McCALL’S ACTIVITY BARN
Holiday visitors and weekenders can start their day by catching the early session of snow tubing at the Activity Barn, located just outside McCall on Moonridge Drive. A conveyor lift (aka magic carpet) makes this snowtubing adventure a breeze, transporting your family members to the top of a collection of 800-foot tubing lanes. While any fun-loving child over 36” tall will love this outing, you might be surprised at how much your ‘inner child’ will enjoy careening down the snow-covered lanes! The Activity Barn is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Look for extended hours and Bonus Days over Winter Break and other holiday and carnival periods.
Pro tip: The morning (two-hour) session is generally less busy than mid-day sessions, which means more laps per visit!
CHILL AT MANCHESTER ICE & EVENT CENTER
This beautiful facility is one of the gems of downtown McCall, but unlike your typical ice rink, it offers up a lot more than sports leagues and public skating sessions. Check the ice calendar for Cosmic Skate sessions when they black out the rink and put on a cool light show. Weekends and holidays are popular times to try out a popular new activity, Ice Bumper Cars! And don’t get us wrong, public skate sessions can be tons of fun. The rink offers rental skates for less than $3 and a Bump & Skate package for just $15 per person.
HOT SPRING SOAK & PLAY
After all that action (and a lunch break) you may want to warm up and relax a little, and Zims Hot Springs might be just the ticket. Zims is located a few miles outside of New Meadows. It features two outdoor pools fed by an artesian well and cooled by the waters of the Little Salmon River. The large pool is a touch cooler so the kiddos can get their wiggles out while grown-ups find some zen in the hot pool. The snack bar and arcade are also a big hit. Zims is open until 9 or 10 pm during the winter which makes it easy to work into any family’s schedule! If you’re heading back from Zims toward McCall close to mealtime, don’t miss the chance to stop and eat at The Intersection
BBQ Bar & Grill in downtown New Meadows. This family-owned treasure specializes in slow-smoked barbeque but the extensive menu includes salads, sandwiches, burgers, and more.
Among other family-friendly dinner options, The Blue Moose, on the north end of McCall, features drive-through convenience with flavor combos that will satisfy everyone. Known for its affordable kids meals and delicious shakes, Blue Moose has a great selection of burgers, wraps, and salads that incorporate cool ingredients like lamb, elk, and ribeye. Yum!
For those looking to take a load off after a long day on your feet, Toll Station Pizza is set up to please every member of the family. A small arcade area will keep the kids busy while the pizzas bake and a nice selection of beer and wine can help mom and dad unwind after an action-packed ‘Yes Day’!
NIGHT SKIING AT LITTLE SKI HILL
If your crew has any energy to spare after sun-down, the Little Ski Hill offers easy access to a low-key night skiing adventure. Grab a super-affordable ticket at the cozy lodge and head over to the brand new T-bar to shred under the lights! The lighted slopes are mostly gentle, but the terrain park features are impressive, and you might be surprised to find some little powder stashes here and there.
Pro tip: There is no rental gear available on-site at Little Ski Hill, so you’ll want to swing by Gravity Sports or Hometown Sports before dinner to gear up.

A Laid-Back Day for Your Girlfriend Getaway
The modern girlfriend getaway is just as likely to include highenergy outdoor adventures, but if your stay allows for a ‘down day’, we’ve got some suggestions on how to make the most of it.
First, and most importantly, start slow. More active winter pursuits often require an early morning wakeup call, so our Ladies Day itinerary starts with sleeping in! Our favorite hotels for not-so-early rising include two luxurious lakefront options. Shore Lodge and Hotel McCall both offer pampering touches and easy access to a delicious breakfast on-site.
POKING AROUND TOWN
If you skipped breakfast at your hotel, splurge-worthy Stacey Cakes makes a great first stop. Pick up one of Stacey’s handcrafted, highly addictive sweet and savory pastries, or grab a cookie for later.
Pro Tip: Yes, you really do need a whole bag of gingersnaps. Trust us!
Swing by North Fork Coffee Roaster’s new downtown storefront for a hot cuppa or to stock up on locally roasted organic beans and grounds. The new location includes a fullservice coffee and espresso bar, toasty breakfast burritos and sandwiches, and stylish North Fork merch. Once you’re sufficiently caffeinated, bring on the shopping!
McCall is a haven for shoppers who prefer a unique boutique to a chain store. While you’re in the heart of town, be sure to check out Lake Street’s new Monkey Love, which aims to celebrate the mountain lifestyle with everything from cool apparel to artisan candles and ethically-sourced and sustainably made jewelry. Dozens of cool and eclectic shops line the streets of McCall, offering everything from art and housewares to apparel, gifts, and antiques. https://visitmccall.org/things-to-do/activity/shopping/
SPA TIME
There’s no shortage of options for those in search of something soothing. Try a Thai or Hot Stone massage from Unwind Spa or
get IV Therapy treatments in their companion shop, Hydrate 208. A trip to The Cove Spa at Shore Lodge makes for an idyllic afternoon: a soothing soak in the indoor/outdoor saltwater immersion pools is a perfect warm up for a massage, facial, or full-body scrub.
In Donnelly, Emulate Natural Care incorporates wild healing herbs in its one-of-a-kind, organic massage, body scrub and facial treatments.
If your day of leisure is centered at Tamarack, you can pair your spa day with an evening of fine dining. The newly-updated Tamarack Spa offers massage and facials in the Lodge at Osprey Meadows. From there, head over to The Reserve in the Tamarack Village to savor signature cocktails and settle in for a multi-course dinner in a modern mountain atmosphere.
If you’re heading back to McCall for
Pro Tip: if your girlfriend getaway starts on a Thursday or stretches into Monday, you can’t beat the delightful theme nights at Ruperts restaurant, located lakeside in Hotel McCall. Thursday is Thai Night and Mondays feature the Chef’s Tasting Menu. Two freshly updated bar and lounge spaces provide ample opportunity to sample

The mountains of soft powder snow and expansive trail systems in the backcountry provide all the right ingredients to help adrenaline junkies get their fix. Seasoned backcountry skiers have their own favorite approaches. Experienced snowmobile riders have their favorite stashes. But you don’t need to have a ton of local knowledge to ‘get the goods’ in this outdoor adventure mecca. Fortunately for newcomers, permitted guide services can take the hassles out of your backcountry quests.
GUIDED BACKCOUNTRY SNOWCAT SKIING ON 18,000 ACRES
Nope, that’s not a typo. Brundage Snowcat Adventures has been guiding powder-hungry skiers and snowboarders to a huge expanse of coveted backcountry stashes since the early 90’s. Unlike your typical snowcat program, the terrain doesn’t lie adjacent to the ski area. Instead, you’ll journey several miles beyond the ski area into the Goose Creek drainage and ski or snowboard from four different mountain peaks. Slab Butte is one of the most iconic, but repeat guests will tell you that the long, playful runs off Granite Mountain are among the most memorable. When conditions are just right, skiers and riders might get the rare treat of exploring the snowy steeps of Twin Lakes or pillow drops on La Casa. And in between runs? The remote alpine views are other-worldly. Intermediate powder riding experience is necessary and reservations are required. Brundage Snowcat Adventures: www.brundage.com/snowcat

GUIDED SNOWMOBILE TOURS
The same great ingredients that make a snowcat adventure so satisfying are in the mix for guided snowmobile adventures, just add in some horsepower and get ready to ride.
You don’t need to worry about parking or wayfinding when you sign on with CM Backcountry Adventures or Brundage Snowmobile Tours. Both outfits roll out the red carpet and make this high-octane adventure approachable for those new to the sport. Brundage Mountain Snowmobile Adventures are tailored more toward trail riding and touring the stunning scenery north of Brundage Mountain. CM Backcountry has more of a freeride focus and offers avalanche safety and skill building clinics on top of their guided tours. Either way, a guided tour is the most hassle-free way to get your juices flowing and immerse yourself in the beautiful backcountry of the Payette National Forest.
For those who’d like to strike out on their own, the greater McCall area has more than 500 miles of groomed trails to explore. Snowmobile rentals are available from Brundage and CM along with Cheap Thrills Rentals in McCall.
RedLine Recreational Toys in Lake Fork operates on a membership basis and offers snowmobile rentals along with a wide selection of summer playthings. www.redlinerectoys.com

ADVENTURES IN DINING
If your sense of adventure holds strong through dinnertime, this area offers a surprising array of international cuisine. Mexican food fans will love the authenticity of Pueblo Lindo Frenchies on Third serves up New Orleans-inspired comfort food and a “Blue Plate Special” lineup that is not to be overlooked. Sushi Bar McCall offers a fun, eclectic lakeview dining experience and food that’s as beautiful as it is delicious.
Ragazza di Lago offers lakefront dining, a full bar, and a creative take on Mediterranean cuisine, while sister restaurant Ragazza di Bufalo has been wowing diners in Donnelly for years with its delicious twist on Italian cuisine and focus on locally-sourced ingredients.
Pro Tip: The “Ragazza” Crispy Artichoke appetizer is gluten-free and delicious!

Snow-covered mountains naturally instill a sense of calm in all who carve out quiet moments among them. Those looking for an extra bit of solace need look no further than McCall for cozy cabins, secluded lookouts, and intimate family fun.
HISTORIC HOTSPRINGS OVERNIGHTER
There is no adventure more unique, or more quintessentially McCall, than an overnight trip to Burgdorf Hot Springs. Burgdorf is a rustic, historic resort nestled in the mountains of the Payette National Forest dating all the way back to the 1860’s when gold miners crawled the surrounding hills.
Located 32 miles north of McCall, winter access is by snowmobile only. While the ride out will include some engine noise, a sense of peace and tranquility will wash over you the moment you arrive.
Burgdorf cabins are charming and clean, but rustic. Overnight guests get priority access to three historic log-sided pools set at the heart of this backcountry escape, and the surrounding meadows offer plenty of opportunities to take a walk or snowshoe trek for some quiet reflections during the day.
SMALL DOSE OF SOLITUDE – ICE FISHING LAKE CASCADE
If you’re looking to work some solace into a day with other activities, Ice Fishing is about as chill as you can get, and Lake Cascade is the place to start. Ice traditionally starts getting thick enough for anglers in December, but those pursuing cold water catches of perch and trout should remember to review Ice Fishing safety gear and guidelines.
Pro Tip: Advanced reservations are required (with a two-night minimum stay and proof of vaccination) so you’ll need to do some pre-planning for this adventure. www.burgdorfhotsprings.com
Cheap Thrills Rentals offers overnight snowmobile rentals. www.cheapthrillsrentals.com
Pro Tip: The Idaho Fish and Game website has great resources for safety, gear, targets, tackle and techniques: www.idfg.idaho.gov/fish/ice-fishing
If you’d rather have someone show you the ropes during your first ice fishing excursion, Tamarack Resort is now offering Ice Fishing adventures as a guided service. www.tamarackidaho.com
Continued page 44
Photo courtesy Case Conti VisualsUNTRACKED BACKCOUNTRY LINES
It’s tough to get more immersed in the backcountry than with this next excursion, but you will need to pay some dues for access to this level of solitude. Payette Powder Guides’ coveted ‘yurt trip’ takes experienced backcountry skiers to a cozy encampment deep in the backcountry at 6930’ elevation. It includes two yurts, a wood-fired sauna, and an outhouse. This adventure offers more than 30,000 acres of backcountry skiing that varies from mellow tree glades to the steep and deep. A snowcat will drive you out to the remote site, but the climb to the top of your desired ski runs is up to you. www.payettepowderguides.com

Ever since the very first issue of Visit McCall Magazine, there has been one elusive story I’ve wanted to feature. Every year when we map out the editorial content and plan for upcoming magazines, the city bus shelters always top the list. For whatever reason, our timing has ALWAYS been off: The artwork will be suddenly swapped out, and another opportunity to tell this beautiful story is missed.
But not this year! I learned this was a year for updating the bus stop artwork in that magical small-town way where a casual conversation with neighbors led to a chance mention about art class and a project for school that would end up getting printed on the bus shelters. Boom. This was the chance I had been waiting for – a chance to not just write about the finished product, but actually watch a bit of the process unfold.
I had always known that McCall’s five bus shelters were designed by students. What I didn’t fully understand was the immense amount of planning, collaboration, and time it takes to get each print finalized and installed and the team of supportive and enthusiastic people who make it all happen. As part of the City of McCall’s “Hometown Art” initiative, the bus shelters, along with the murals that line Railroad Avenue, are spearheaded by some amazing teachers at our local public schools who act as guides for the students designing the finished product.
How the Art Got Its Start
The first formal public art program in the City of McCall came with the inception of the Hometown Art initiative. With the creation of the Public Art Advisory Committee in 2012, the stage was set for a collaboration. “One of the first opportunities we identified was the bus shelters,” says Delta James, City of McCall Economic

Development Planner and Liaison to the Public Art Advisory Committee. The project brought in participation from local schools to create the artwork and facilitate art education programming at all grade levels.
As a member of the Public Art Advisory Committee, McCallDonnelly High School art teacher, Cynthia Dittmer has worked to create and guide the Hometown Art collaboration with the City of McCall. With the help of grant money from various sources, she has shared financial resources and organized the involvement of other teachers from each of the district schools. “During the first year, we worked with grant money from the McCall-Donnelly Education Foundation. My Advanced Art class and Alison Foudy’s high school English students mentored elementary school students in understanding the importance of public art, creating their own public art piece and writing reflections about the work they created,” says Dittmer. “At the end of the school year, we hosted a community art show and chose the best of the work to photograph and turn into the final bus shelter pieces.”
That was year one. Since then, the program has flexed and adapted while continuing to bring unique artwork to the community. Five bus shelters are updated every four years while the murals on Railroad Avenue, which are also part of the overall Hometown Art program, are updated every three years.
“The overarching theme of our program has always been ‘Hometown Art,’” says Dittmer, “and this offers a positive community and geographical context while providing flexibility for individual teachers and students to interpret.” And the theme has always produced wonderful results. “We see that when creativity and inspiration connect students to a sense of purpose and place in the community, exciting things
happen,” says Dittmer. This year, Kim Hamilton’s second graders at Barbara Morgan elementary school worked with a backpacking theme, the middle school chose to highlight McCall icons and what their community means to them, while the high school worked to create visual representations that support mental wellness.
“The overarching theme of the entire program is ‘Hometown Art,’” says Dittmer, “but that provides a lot of flexibility for individual teachers and students to interpret that theme.” This year, the elementary school worked with a backpacking theme, the middle school chose to highlight McCall icons and what their community means to them, while the high school worked to create visual representations of mental wellness.
Art in Action
I had the opportunity to visit two classes as they worked on the final artwork pieces for the bus shelters – a middle school class and the advanced art class at the high school.
The middle school art classes chose to work their theme of community into a Mandala design with icons representing the things they love the most about McCall. “We want to celebrate everyone’s voices,” says Jared Hopkins, Art Teacher at Payette Lakes Middle School. “Every artist has to be represented in the

final product.” To design the Mandalas, each student contributed two pieces that were then incorporated into the finished arrangement.
On the day I visited, students were working on the first iteration of their final Mandala design as a class. As with many group settings, it started slow, with lots of encouragement and a few suggestions from Mr. Hopkins. Once a few pieces were placed on the board, the creativity started flowing and each student had a turn trying different placements and arrangements. “It is all about balancing shapes, sizes, color tones, and imagery,” says Hopkins. I left class that day impressed with not just the artwork, but also the collaborative approach and the thoughtful placement given to each piece to create the final design.
At the high school, the same thoughtfulness was on display as students worked to complete two different elements that would combine together on a single, unified bus shelter design. All of the pieces reflect their chosen theme of mental wellness, something McKeeley Meske, a senior at McCall-Donnelly High School and project contributor, says was important to the entire class. “With the pandemic lock down last year and the things the community went through it was something we really wanted to talk about and highlight,” she says.
The first part of the design features puzzle pieces by more than 100 student artists that fit together to symbolize the significance of every individual, the importance of connection, and of a healthy mindset. Each student chose something uplifting to their own mental health or the health of others and painted, drew, or block print stamped their images onto puzzle piece shape. The puzzle pieces were then scanned and cleaned up in Photoshop

with the help of Business Technology teacher, Shelly Chamberlain, and some hard-working student aides.
The second part of the design drew inspiration from street artist, Chip Thomas’ thought-provoking work. Student artists painted motivational text across one another’s backs and arms as ‘human canvases.’ The painted subjects were then photographed and isolated to a transparent background. “The idea was to show the importance of kindness and respect across differing social, philosophical, and age groups within a community,” says Dittmer. “Students connected strongly with the idea that we are all more than ‘labels’ and hoped to create a bus stop that invited passers-by to interact with not only a conceptual aspect but with the physical design of light and color.”
And the finished product is something wholly unique. This year, four bus shelters were reprinted with artwork that will showcase the talent of our community for the next several years. Along with the unique artwork, “this project really helps build community and articulate what is unique about our community,” says James. “It is one of those things that is really visible to residents and visitors that defines us as a town which is why the theme of ‘Hometown Arts’ fits so well.”

Manchester Ice & Event Center
By McKenzie KraemerIt’s hard to miss the giant building in downtown McCall that is home to the Manchester Ice and Event Center. Built with an architectural design meant to evoke and pay homage to the rich history of the mill and logging industry, including large timbers, the ice rink has been cemented as a community gathering place. It is a place where families meet, kids run free with friends, and the lure of the ice inspires all ages to take a chance on skates.
While the ice rink is a very visible landmark in the community, there is a wealth of programming, maintenance, and dedication by the staff and foundation that supports it not readily seen from the exterior. We sat down with John Barth, General Manager, and Lori Benton, Director of Skate, to get the behindthe-scenes scoop on everyone’s favorite rink.
HOW DID THE RINK GET ITS START?
The Sabala Family formed the Richard Sabala Foundation in honor of their son who passed tragically. In honoring his memory and the family’s love for McCall, the Foundation has worked to support several projects in the area. The Ice Rink was the second project of the Foundation, following the completion of the Rich Sabala Athletic Complex at Payette Lakes High School, completed in 1996.
The land the rink sits on was acquired during the formation of the Foundation, but it would take many more years to complete the final building. “Many people falsely assume that because the rink has the ‘Manchester’ name on it that it was just one check written and fundraising was done,” says Barth. “But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Barth says the Foundation worked tirelessly to raise the $7 million needed to build the facility. In 2003, the rink officially opened for business.
2 . WHAT PROGRAMMING DOES THE RINK OFFER?
Hockey and ice skating are staples at the rink. But just saying the rink offers “hockey and figure skating” is a disservice. The rink starts with hockey teams for kids ages four and up while kids under four can learn to skate with private lessons. From youth leagues to adult teams, stick-n-puck sessions and weekly drop-ins, tournaments and week-long hockey camps, there really is something for everyone. On top of the local hockey leagues that run from September through April, the rink also hosts collegiate games (be sure to get your tickets to the BSU vs University of Oregon game the first weekend of Winter Carnival) and is working to get full-contact spectator hockey back into regular rotation.
On top of hockey, the rink is a figure skating powerhouse. “One of the things that makes this rink so unique is that we are a ‘show rink,’” says Benton. Those in the figure skating program have an opportunity to showcase their talent at two annual shows, one at Christmas and one at Winter Carnival. “The Carnival show is one that just doesn’t happen anywhere else in the United States,” says Benton. “Most shows will feature one or two guest skaters where we have ten guest stars working with 40 local kids to put on an amazing production.”
With figure skating running year-round and hockey dominating the winter months, the rink was able to bring in a new summer program to add even more entertainment for the community…ice bumper cars. The bumper car sessions run regularly each week along with Public Skate sessions for anyone wanting to drop in and take a turn on the ice to partake.

3 . WHAT SETS THIS RINK APART FROM OTHERS?
The dedication and participation from the community, says Barth. “Along with about 80,000 visits per year, we also have about 100 families that call the rink ‘home,’” says Barth. It is a family place where everyone can come and enjoy a few hours. “We watch families grow up here,” adds Benton. It usually starts with a little kIdaho that wants to figure skate or play hockey and by the end, mom and dad are learning to skate and play in leagues, too. “It is inevitable that the entire family gets involved,” says Barth.
The rink also offers a level of competition that can be hard to come by in a small rural town. Both hockey and figure skating are feeder programs for higher level competition. From playing collegiate hockey to earning medals in US Figure Skating Testing Tracks, this hometown rink has the potential to be a launching pad for kids wanting to pursue their sports.
“One more unique aspect to the rink,” says Barth, “is the amount of dasher boards at the rink.” He says that a lot of rinks only have a few sponsors here and there, but in McCall, 66 boards surround the ice. “It is such a testament to the community support we have,” he says.
4 . WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO KEEP A RINK THIS SIZE RUNNING?
“The maintenance on a facility like this is significant,” says Barth, “and it is constant.” From ensuring the cooling systems are running smoothly to keeping the one and only Zamboni working for its six to ten rounds per day, upkeep isn’t easy. And then there is the general stuff. “People always joke with me about the glass in here,” says Barth. “They can never believe how clean it is…and that’s because we clean it every single day!”
Behind the scenes, the compressor room is mission control for the rink, housing the compressor, water heater, and condenser tower. Together, these keep the ice at optimal temperature. “We like to keep the ice at 18 degrees for hockey because it resists slicing,” says Barth, “then we increase the temperature to 21 or 22 degrees for figure skating so it won’t shatter.” Aside from simply keeping the ice cold, the mechanics of the rink also work to change the temperature of the ice constantly between daily programming needs, able to drop one degree every thirty minutes.
None of the equipment is cheap to replace and the rink works diligently to repair as much as they can on site regularly. The rink operates as a non-profit with support from the Sabala Foundation. “We are so lucky,” says Barth. “Without the support of the Foundation, the rink would not be able to offer the programming we do at the rates we do.” And while the pandemic curbed the rink’s goal of becoming 100% self-sufficient using only operations revenue, they are getting closer. “Bumper cars and hockey camps in the summer have really helped us bridge that seasonal gap.”
5 . WHAT HAS THE PANDEMIC BEEN LIKE FOR RINK OPERATIONS?
“Honestly,” says Barth, “one of the biggest accomplishments in the past few years has been how we operated during the pandemic and where that put us today.” Barth says that they were one of the few rinks between Coeur d’Alene and Salt Lake City able to stay open in the summer of 2020.
“Because of that we saw a lot of new participation,” he says.
“We had strict COVID protocols in place,” says Benton. And people were happy to abide by them. “People basically saIdaho ‘If you want me to stand on my head I will just so I can skate,’” recalls Benton. McCall’s rink became a sanctuary for not just the local community, but many regionally looking for a place to continue skating.
And that participation has rolled over into current operations. This past summer the rink hosted hockey camps seven out of eight weeks. Previously, the most they had hosted was three. And it doesn’t stop with camps. “We are operating every day from 6am to 10pm,” says Barth. “For a rink to be running hard that amount of time every day is a real statement about the kind of participation and support we are seeing.”

We’ve included a “New Business Roundup” in every winter issue of Visit McCall magazine, but this year’s article feels particularly meaningful. Between the challenges of COVID-19 and the sharp increase in visitation to our area, existing business owners have inspired us with the creativity and tenacity they’ve shown to keep their doors open and to continue to offer their services. Another group of entrepreneurs seized the opportunity to start new businesses in our community in the face of these challenges, and we are proud to introduce you to these new Chamber members.
autumnlynnephotography.com
Autumn has always had a love for photography and turned that passion into a wedding photography business in 2014. After five years of traditional weddings and large events, she took a course on the very specific niche in the wedding photography world…adventure elopement photography. “It totally changed how I viewed my business and the direction I wanted to take it,” she says. “It was scary, but a good shift.”
Autumn now specializes in capturing adventure elopements. Many locations involve hiking, or in some cases even backpacking. This fall she left for a three-day backpacking trip with a couple to shoot their elopement in the Sawtooth Wilderness. And as part of her business approach, she helps couples follow Leave No Trace principles while planning their big day. “I love it because I get to know people,” she says. “I get to know their stories. It’s more than just a wedding day, it’s about the total experience.”

Cross O Meats
crossomeats.com
Founded in 1890, deep roots and family legacy are at the heart of Cross O Meats. Derek and Jessica Wilson, along with their four young children, have been the owners and operators of their 5th generation Idaho ranch and homestead since 2016. After making the decision to leave their corporate lives to take over the family ranch, the Wilsons faced a steep learning curve. After seeing Derek’s father struggle with the “big beef monopoly” for so many years, they vowed to change the business model to focus on direct consumer sales. And that change has been a huge success. “We have shipped to over 27 states,” says Derek, “And our reach continues to grow. We not only sell a product, we sell our lifestyle and personalize the experience to make the relationship more meaningful for all of us.”
The business has been one big leap of faith, but both Derek and Jessica say it has been so rewarding. “The biggest thing for me is the legacy side of it,” says Derek. “Understanding that we aren’t really the owners, we are the people looking over it.
Our hope is that this will continue, and our kids and their grandkids will carry this forward, too.”
Check out Cross O Meats at crossomeats.com and follow them on Facebook and Instagram for behind the scenes updates of their family ranch life.

Just A Bite
justabiteidaho.com
Just a Bite is a McCall-based boutique catering and personal chef business owned by Yvette Will. After feeling burned out from a lengthy career in the business world, she took a chance and enrolled in a culinary institute in Boulder. This transitioned into a job working with Meals on Wheels and that is where Yvette says she gained experience identifying community needs and learning how to connect with people through food. Paired with her love of entertaining and hosting, Just a Bite was born and the rest is history.
Just a Bite takes on small events from McCall to Boise and designs custom menus for up to 30 people. Keeping events small offers Yvette the opportunity to work more intimately with clients to produce high quality food tailored to the client’s needs. Yvette loves to inject new creativity and liveliness that creates dynamic menus. “When the stars align, and when the people really enjoy your food,” she says, “it makes all the shopping, the schlepping, the knife cuts, and the burns all worth it.”

Kerri and Jenni are both self-taught artists with an affinity for watercolors and a deep love for local landscapes who embrace the motto “Community over Competition.” A writer by trade, Kerri has been selling her art locally as Little Orange Tent since 2017 while Jenni works as a full-time artist, selling her hand-crafted jewelry and watercolors via Jenni Ritch Art. SIP & SAVOR
Sometimes there are flavors that work well at any meal. We can’t decide what time of the day we enjoy these treats from North Fork Coffee Roasters and Stacey Cakes more. Delicious breakfast? Check. Lunch? Absolutely. An après ski dinner? That works, too! Decide for yourself and whip up one of these recipes at home this winter:

And you can (of course!) purchase their small batch locally roasted coffee beans. They are also adding a mocktail menu this winter that takes advantage of their specialty roasted coffees. Here, North Fork shares one of their favorite recipes using their Bugling Bull Bourbon Barrel Beans. This blend is aged in an Kentucky bourbon barrel before being dark roasted for a rich flavor.

The Face Behind the Forecast Todd Cook McCall
Weather
In a mountain community, being obsessed with the weather forecast doesn’t make you unique. Todd Cook takes his obsession with the weather to a higher level—a level one might even call—atmospheric.
Cook is the brains behind the “McCall Weather” Facebook page. While its title is simple and straightforward, Todd’s forecasts go far beyond the basics to provide the greater Valley and Adams County areas with an up-to-date, custom forecast.
Like so many of us, Cook was attracted to the McCall area by its outstanding assets: lakes, rivers, mountains, water, and snow. He found the area less frenzied than other places that offer the same outdoor amenities. He should know, he’s lived all over the country. Cook grew up in the Midwest as the son of an earth sciences teacher before migrating through Florida, Colorado, California, Washington, and Wyoming along his outdoor-focused life’s journey.
Here in McCall, Cook’s Facebook page is quickly gaining a loyal following, especially from locals passionate about outdoor pursuits. He takes the forecasts beyond what weather-watchers get from the National Weather Service forecast – by putting it under a hyper-local lens.
“NWS has really big areas to cover, and not only that but really different types of forecast areas to cover, like high desert, mountain valleys, higher mountains,” says Cook. “And they just don’t have the resources to dedicate the time and effort to do really specific local forecasts.“
Cook, however, does and dedicates time and effort to do really specific local forecasts, all on a volunteer basis.
“I’m really trying to have more of a personal touch and focus on this area in particular and take what they (NWS) provide and dive into that a little deeper and give it more of a local aspect.”
This area presents a couple of challenges for a forecaster: as many locals know, radar coverage here is spotty. Weather models rarely agree. But the biggest challenge, according to Cook, is that the models aren’t specific
enough to forecast around the rugged and varied terrain that makes our area so unique.
“Between the different valleys and locations in the area, the different ski mountains obviously, they have quite significant differences when they get more snow and less snow.”
Cook says it can take two to three years to study the relationship between the models and what really ends up happening on the ground, especially in a place where there are so many elevation changes.
“Like with snowfall, I’m still learning some of the different variations,” says Cook. “Like who gets snow when, and at different locations. Seeing and getting reports throughout the winter is a really important part of the process, especially in an area that has such dramatic terrain variables.”
And it’s not just the terrain in our area he is studying. It’s all the terrain that a storm passes over between its source and its arrival.
“You see a storm coming in off the Pacific, and the biggest thing is, it’s got the Cascades to go across, it’s got the high desert to go across, if it’s coming from the north, you’ve got the Wallowas up there,” says Cook. “Even the Seven Devils, that’s a small but rugged range and if you get a certain strength of wind coming with a system, that can create a downslope effect and change everything.”
With just one winter under his belt, Cook says he’s already drawn some conclusions about what impacts the two major ski areas, Brundage Mountain and Tamarack.
“Obviously part of it is elevation, and the orientation of the two resorts,” says Cook. “You’ve got Tamarack that sits on the east side of the mountains and then Brundage is on the northwest, so, you get that northwest flow and Brundage, nine times out of ten, is going to do a little better than Tamarack.”
BUT…
“If you get a southerly storm with a little bit of an easterly component sometimes Tamarack can do better. And even a westerly flow can put Tamarack on top.”
Cook says several events surprised him last winter, and he’s learned there are several factors at play for powder chasers.
Continued page 80
FIRST
“One: where the storm’s coming from,” says Cook. “And two: where the bands of snow set up. Variations in that can make all the difference in just a few miles.”
And those bands of snow can push Tamarack way ahead in some storm cycles. It’s those active storm cycles— both during snow season and thunderstorm season—that keep Cook’s blood pumping and keep his followers coming back for more.
“That’s probably my forte and what I love to do,” says Cook. “NWS will put a forecast out and they don’t come back and change it 90% of the time. I like to stay on top of things and say, ‘hey things are changing.‘”
He’s noticed in this area, the snow or rain totals can be fairly accurate, but a lot of times the timing in the weather models is way off.
“If there’s a complicated storm coming in, I keep a close eye on things and try to do my best to keep people updated on how things are going to change.”
It’s not all about snow. Anyone who follows McCall Weather year-round knows Todd likes to talk about clouds. And post pictures of them.
“They’re all different, the lighting is always different with different types of clouds.”
And when you spend your time doing complex things like studying models and trends and orographic effects, it can be nice to look up at the sky and remember the sense of wonder he had as a kid.

“When you get the puffy cumulous clouds, you start to imagine the different shapes and they get bigger and bigger like they’re going to turn into something,” muses Cook.
“Everybody loves clouds.”

Bluebird days have an uncanny ability to remind us of summertime in the McCall area. See what’s in store once the snow melts…
HIT THE LINKS
Take on the challenge of our four stunning courses. McCall Municipal Course provides 27 stimulating holes in an affable atmosphere for every level of golfer. Jug Mountain Ranch offers every golfer, social or competitive, gorgeous panoramic views of Jughandle Mountain, the Ranch’s natural wetlands, old growth forests, and the rolling hills of the East Valley. The prestigious Whitetail Club and Resort offers an inspiring mountain masterpiece, while MeadowCreek Resort in Meadows Valley brings brilliant play and ample friendliness.
DINING
The patio is open! One of our favorite things about warm sunny days in McCall is dining al fresco and sampling the delicious fare of our local restaurants, bistros, and pubs. Just about every eatery has a place to take advantage of the sunshine or pick up something to go and picnic at Legacy Park along the shores of Payette Lake. Our local Farmers Markets are also open each summer and provide a great place to find fresh local produce, meat and baked goods.
THRILLING WHITEWATER
Idaho is well-known as the Whitewater State and there is certainly no shortage of rapids to satisfy thrill-seekers in the McCall area. From the laIdaho back Cabarton Stretch to thrilling multi-day trips on the Main Salmon through the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, we have the whitewater you are looking for!
TAKE A HIKE
Hiking is hands down one of the most popular activities in McCall. There is a huge variety of trails to explore around the area. Only have an hour? No problem, we have a trail for that. Want to turn a hike into a day-long adventure? We have that covered, too. And the scenery is epic no matter which trail you take.
SINGLETRACK SCENE
The McCall area is ripe with miles of single and double track trails for all abilities and has been designated as a Silver Ride Center by the International Mountain Biking Association. Hitch a ride to the top with lift serviced mountain biking at Brundage Mountain Resort and Tamarack Resort or take advantage of the shuttle service at Jug Mountain Ranch. If you would rather take the trail less traveled, stop by mccallchamber.org and view our Mountain Biking itinerary with fresh ideas for easy, intermediate, and expert rides around the region including CIMBA’s Payette Lake Trail.
MAKE A SPLASH AT THE LAKE
Jump in, dive in, or wade in! The West Central Mountains of Idaho are teeming with lakes… more than 300 of them. Our largest lakes, Payette Lake and Lake Cascade, offer swimming, sailing, waterskiing, wakesurfing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding. Rentals are available for just about any activity you have in mind.

PARTING SHOT
High Mountain Gardening
Fresh veggies, hand-picked raspberries, local honey, stunning flowers. All favorites from the garden, but so much sweeter when they grow in the mountains! When the growing season is a mere 90 days, traditional gardening gets tricky. At McCall’s elevation, we see the last frost somewhere in midJune and the first hard freeze in late September. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for growth…or error.
High mountain gardening is a honed skill. Trial and error mixed with secrets of the trade passed along by friends and neighbors—and an early start. Winter is the time most gardens here take shape. Planning, organizing, and starting seeds to nurture along indoors until the ground thaws and we can dig in.
We are excited to explore some local gardens in the summer issue of Visit McCall Magazine and share a few expert tips along the way for those wanting to try their hand at gardening at 5,000 feet. Until then, we leave you with a parting shot full of sunshine and green things to enjoy.
